Because I care (Part 2)
(Note: the following comic takes place in the movie *Scooby Doo and the legend of the Phantosaur*. Its a little messy and it contains light mentions of suggestive themes, so please, take that into account before reading. Also, please read the first part before this one if you haven't done it yet. Now, without anything left to say, hope you enjoy it!)

The implication of Shaggy’s ability to beat up the biker gang in Legend of the Phantosaur implies the he can always do that. The only thing stopping him is his fear.

the ongoing scooby review
a couple days ago we watched legend of the phantosaur. this is the movie that originated the "ultra instinct shaggy" meme. despite what you may think from its memetic status, it actually fully goes in good tier!
the meme has its origins thusly: due to repeated exposure to frightening scenarios, shaggy has developed a disorder that causes him to go catatonic in response to fear. while on site for their latest investigation, shaggy gets help from a hypnotherapist with some high-tech equipment, and turns into a brave, strong, heroic version of himself whenever he hears, says, or thinks the word "bad." while in his heroic state, shaggy manages such feats as: beating up an entire biker gang in a diner brawl, doing absolutely insane stunts in a subsequent motorcycle race with the leader of the aforementioned biker gang, and leading the gang out of a treacherous situation near the end of the movie using complex acrobatics and precision weapon throwing. it's very fun to watch. it also ends with shaggy learning that he doesn't need hypnotherapy to be brave, strong, or heroic, because the hypnosis can't make him do things he couldn't already do on his own, and so he accomplishes some pretty risky stuff while still scared out of his mind.
the actual plot of the movie is a little jumbled when explained out loud i think, but it's easy enough to follow while watching the movie itself. there were some tropes in play that i don't exactly love, but they do at least actively lampshade them. the titular phantosaur is part of a fake native american legend the writers pulled out of their ass, but as the character finishes telling the story, the movie makes it clear he got it from a book he's holding basically labeled "completely bullshit stories about the american southwest." elements of the movie's story were kind of predicated on it so i dont see an easy way they could've not written it like that, but the tacit acknowledgement of it being bullshit is at least... something? they also pull the name of an actual nation from the area, which, again, sure is something.
besides that, there's a lot to like about the movie. the paleontological stuff is at once more and less accurate than i thought it would be. sizes and ages of depicted fossils are almost complete wrong, but they avoid common knowledge dinosaurs almost completely in favor of namedropping lesser known ones. there IS a jurassic park homage raptor chase sequence, and the appearance of the raptors is entirely fictionalized to the point where they look more like demons, but it includes my favorite moment in the movie so i give it a pass: the leader of the biker gang, while having his boys help the town and gang with the raptor attack, punches one of the raptors IN THE FACE.
there's also not one, but three of the titular phantosaurs--two used by a minor villain duo trying to buy the rights to the dig site to turn it back into a silver mine for money, and one used by the grad students working the dig to try and scare the townspeople away so they can do some destructive excavation on a major find. the former two are animatronics meant to resemble real dinosaurs, while the latter is a laser projection with the appearance of several dinosaurs put together. the laser phantosaur is particularly spectacular to me because of how cool it looks.
the characters are also all very enjoyable throughout, with nary a jerkass velma or incompetent daphne or way too dumb shaggy in sight. they also kind of confirm the only way velma could be heterosexual is if she dated a male clone of herself, which is really funny. because she does.

I was watching Scooby Doo: Legend of the Phantosaur with my seven year old cousin, and during the scene where Shaggy beat up the bikers in the bar, she just said "That's so hot," and when I tell you I fucking died.

One of my biggest revelations when I was a child was discovering that Daphne and Fred were a couple in SDMI because in my head I was completely convinced that Fred and Velma were dating.

07/01/24 - Double Feature! Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur & Scooby-Doo! Music of the Vampire
Legend of the Phantosaur - 5/5 Stars
This is the film that the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme originates from, so I went into this expecting a fun time but not a good one. This film is so good you guys. Every jokes hits, the story is genuinely good, the Phantosaur is so cool? I love this film so damn much, definitely gonna re-watch this sometime in the future. Oh also they brought back the sassy GPS, it deserves 5 stars for that alone.
Music of the Vampire - 4/5 Stars
This is a musical, which is certainly a change of pace. And its actually a decent musical (unlike other musicals i could name), and it has a pretty good plot! Not the best film, but in my top ten. Also if you like men you might enjoy the twink vampire actor in this.

13 Decades of Halloween- 2010s
Scooby Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur - 2011
The Mystery Gang checks into a spa after Shaggy has a mental break down. The Doctor tries to cure him with hypnosis, telling him that he will become fearless whenever he hears a key word. Meanwhile at a nearby paleontology dig the local scientists are being menaced by a phantom dinosaur.
vimeo
You can't have a Halloween marathon without throwing in some sort of Scooby Doo in there.
Legend of the Phantosaur is somewhat notorious for spawning the All-Powerful Shaggy jokes that the internet loves.
And to be fair, Shaggy preforming near-super-human feats is a treat and the highlight of the movie. Without that subplot I'm afraid the movie would be rather forgettable as the main plot is a little unwieldly and the villains ultimate plan is kind of stupid when you stop to think about it.
