Monday: Let's see if I can peer pressure myself to do things x') ! What are your own weekly to-do list for this one ? Sunday: I did a big update of this blogpost to make it fancy with a design. I'm loving the vibe ? I also reorganized so it's more clear where I should focus. I only did the minimum this week, I was having my period and it came with a depressive episode (due to my mental illness) and so much dysphoria. I was not mentally available for half the week, it show. But I saw my psychologist and talked about my goals, so I should be more focused next week.

Do you consider yourself good at making mascots? Bogg looks like one
I think I have no gemsona mascot, just "recognizable" characters
But I have some non fandom mascots I guess?
There's Cuálter, easily one of my oldest ocs. Went thru changes but he's the most cartoony oc. If anyone deserves a cartoon it's him and it would be SO CHAOTIC
Then there's Bogg. Unintentionally made on aggie along with a verY good friend of mine and unintentionally became our lord and saviour. I'm not a fan of simple designs but sometimes charm and confort can beat simplicity. It's like a good friend who will be there and will offer no challenge
A while ago I joined a mascot design contest (and won!) so by this fact alone I should be considered decent at what I'm doing?

I also made a mascot for that verY good friend (detailed right sketch by her). Scoty comes as a nickname I made for that same friend (Shy Creature of the Void) and due to reasons it's Scoty now. Cool huh
Special mention to Lil' Dude. They exist.

On August 19th 1560 James Crichton “The Admirable Crichton”, scholar, soldier and adventurer was born.
Always one of my favourite wee tales, James Crichton was the original ‘Admirable Crichton’ and reputed to be one of the most gifted individuals of the 16th Century. He achieved the major portion of his fame through his extraordinary accomplishments in languages, the arts, and sciences, primarily in Italy, but some of his exploits are likely to be more legendary than true. Nevertheless, if half be true; a star he was. He had a good start in life, being the son of the Lord Advocate of Scotland and a descendant of the Royal line of Stewart.
He was undoubtedly an unusually gifted prodigy and was noted for his mental prowess. Crichton was said to have had the gift of perfect recall and to have displayed amazing erudition and powers of memory in public disputations. Of course, like any legendary figure, he had amazing physical capabilities and admirable good looks. Well, good looks are relative; let’s say his contemporaries so thought – and he was better looking than most Stewarts, particularly James VI with whom he shared a tutor.
It is said that by the age of twenty, Crichton could speak ten or twelve languages in each of which he was not only fluent, but could also hold forth in verse and prose. Those social graces meant he was considered the very model of a cultured gentleman. The list of his accomplishments is a long one and includes: adventurer; athlete; debater; fencer; horseman; linguist; man of letters; musician; orator; poet; singer; soldier; scholar; and swordsman – although his admirers probably exaggerated. His languages are listed as: Hebrew; Syriac; Arabic; Greek; Latin; Spanish; French; English; Italian; Dutch; and Flemish or Selavonic; to which we must add at least a Scottish dialect.
James Crichton was born at Eliock House in Dumfries or James Crichton was born in Nithsdale or James Crichton was born in Clunie Castle, Perthshire – take your pick; the sources differ. His family, who was from Nithsdale, moved into Clunie Castle in 1562, so that suggests to me that it’s most likely James was born in Nithsdale. He certainly spent his boyhood at Clunie. Although he apparently went to a school in Dunkeld and had some schooling in Perth, what is certain is that he was educated at St Salvator’s College, in St Andrews, by the noted poet and scholar, George Buchanan, tutor to King James VI. Remarkably, Crichton took his B. A. in 1574 and his M. A. in 1575, at the ages of just thirteen and fourteen respectively.
After University, he left Scotland for the Continent and spent two years in the army of Henry III of France. By 1579, he had pitched up in Italy, where he went on to achieve fame. He initially attracted attention by his scholarly accomplishments, fluency in classical and modern languages, and his undoubted, personal charm, despite having arrived in Genoa in a destitute condition. Orator and polymath that he was, in 1579 he delivered an elaborate Latin oration before the Senate in Genoa. The following year, he went to Venice, where he introduced himself to Aldus Manutius, and challenged all scholars to ‘learned disputations’ – that means to test his knowledge. Then famously in Padua, in 1581, he is said to have overcome the scholars there in a similar debate of three days duration, which took place in the Church of St. John and St. Paul.
He appears to have been something like a vastly conceited Mastermind winner who travelled around Italy, earning his board and lodgings by challenging all comers in tests of knowledge. However extraordinary his achievements sound, there is evidence concerning Crichton’s taunt to the learned men of Italy. Crichton’s oration before the scholars of Genoa is evidenced by a Latin address to the Doge and Senate entitled ‘Oratio J. Critonii Scoti pro Moderatorum Genuensis Reipubl electione coram Senatu habita’ and printed there in 1579. In addition, two copies of the hand-bill describing Crichton’s marvelous knowledge, printed at the Guerra press of the brothers Domenico in Venice, in 1580, can be seen in the British Museum. The hand-bill sports a short biography and an extravagant eulogy of Crichton’s powers. It states that Crichton speaks ten languages and has a command of philosophy, theology, and mathematics. It goes on to say that “[Crichton] improvises Latin verses in all metres and on all subjects [and] has all Aristotle and his commentators at his fingers’ ends.” A final flourish avows that “he is of most beautiful appearance; a soldier from top to toe.”
This tribute is attributed to Crichton’s friend Aldus Manutius, as it was reprinted several times under Aldus’s name as ‘Relatione della qualità di… Crettone’. However, the sceptical might say that the text was nothing other than 16th Century ‘spin’ by Crichton’s mate and publicist in order to attract an audience for his challenge.
Nevertheless, Joseph Justus Scaliger, the famous Continental scholar, described Crichton in ‘Prima Scaligerana’ as a youth of “very wonderful genius”, but qualified his statement by adding that he was “more worthy of admiration than esteem.” Scaliger was very astute. He once went to England and confessed that he did not like the people, but curiously, he drew a distinction between the English and the Scots, viewing the latter more favourably and according hearty praise to Scottish ballads.
Crichton’s death occurred in a rather more uncouth manner than the course of his life as it is generally believed that he died at the age of twenty-one in a street brawl in Mantua on the 3rd of July, 1582. One of his own pupils, the son of the Duke of Mantua, was either directly or indirectly responsible for the ‘assassination’. Whether or not he or the son or both were drunk, the unfortunate outcome hasn’t seemed to have damaged his reputation.
Crichton’s status comes largely from an enthusiastic account of his life and exploits, which was written by his 17th Century biographer, Sir Thomas Urquhart. Published in 1652, that book was called ‘The Discoveryie of a Most Exquisite Jewel’. However, it was in John Johnston’s ‘Heroes Scoti’ of 1603, that Crichton was first given the epithet ‘the Admirable Crichton’. His fame is also due to the extravagant praise given him by Aldus Manutius. Needless to say, such a man is also the subject of several novels, not least J. M. Barrie’s 1902 novel about the perfect butler.
The second pic is the blue plaque commemorating Crichton in St Andrews St Salvator’s College.

500 prompts: Day #10
💝💚🐱Hello Miggins!!🐱💚💝
This is Day #10 of the 500 Days of Writing project. If this is the first one you’re reading, prepare yourself. If this isn’t your first, thank you for your continuous support 💖
Prompt: An alien has just abducted you. Give three reasons why it would send you back to earth.
Depending on why they abducted me, I might not want to go back home. If they were a kind, knowledge driven, peaceful group, I’d want to see their planet first. Try to understand their culture and literature. I’d ask them to show me everything they knew my mind could handle. And, when I felt I learned enough, I’d ask them to take me home so I could spread my knowledge to the rest of humanity.
If they were mean and trying to kill humanity, then they wouldn’t have gotten me in the first place. I would’ve put up too much of a fight.
Well, that’s it for today. Thank you so much for reading this. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on my writing or what this prompt inspired in you.
Either way, thanks again
And Never Stop Writing Your Story 📝
Love,
Scotty Rose🌹

Apology sought for 'disturbing' confinement of people with disabilities
HALIFAX -- An independent report that warned people with disabilities were being unjustly confined in a Nova Scotia psychiatric hospital is being described as "startling and disturbing" by a law professor at Dalhousie University.
Archie Kaiser, who teaches at the Schulich School of Law, said the province should have found housing in the community with supports for the residents, after the review was delivered to senior health officials almost 13 years ago.
"Nova Scotia should apologize for its failure," Kaiser wrote in an email.
"Responsible ministers should take responsibility for the inaction of successive governments following the review. This has been a shameful and deplorable situation for citizens who deserve our support to live with us in the community."
The April 2006 review by Dorothy Griffiths and Dr. Chrissoula Stavrakaki -- experts on the care and treatment of people with both intellectual disabilities and a major mental illness -- emerged last week at a human rights inquiry.
The inquiry is looking at whether 45-year-old Joseph Delaney and 46-year-old Beth MacLean should be permitted to move from the hospital-like settings into small homes where assistance is provided for meals, mental health and other care.
Delaney is still at the Nova Scotia Hospital's Emerald Hall, while MacLean, who spent almost 15 years in the locked psychiatric ward, was moved to a transition unit two years ago, after she launched the complaint.
A third complainant, Sheila Livingstone, died as the case wound its way through various delays, but her story will be told by family members and the complainants' lawyer.
The report by Griffiths and Stavrakaki said at least half of the 19 patients were staying in the locked-door facility -- and "some were being held against their wishes" -- because the province wasn't providing a community home with support.
"The situation is clearly confinement without justification ... A non-disabled person in the province of Nova Scotia who experienced an acute mental illness and recovered would not likely be held in a locked psychiatric ward for up to 10 or more years post recovery," the consultants wrote at the time, just months after former Tory premier Rodney MacDonald came into power.
The authors said there was "a feeling of hopelessness for the individuals who live in the unit" and added that dedicated and committed staff were "feeling demoralized regarding the rules and outcomes."
"This failure to return these individuals to a less restrictive environment is inhumane and a class action lawsuit waiting to happen."
Jo-Anne Pushie, a former clinical social worker who helped launch the human rights complaint in 2014, testified last week at the inquiry that when she came to the facility in 2011 many of the same residents remained on the ward, which prompted her decision to seek legal help.
A spokeswoman for the Nova Scotia Health Authority provided a statement from Rachel Boehm, a director of mental health and addictions, saying the 2006 report remains "relevant today and continues to guide administrators and clinical leads at the Nova Scotia Hospital."
"Our work on the clinical transformation of Emerald Hall to address many of the recommendations in the report is ongoing."
Boehm also wrote "many" patients have been able to move on to placements in the community, but she did not provide a figure on how many.
Her statement says an outreach team works "tirelessly in the community to ensure that many individuals can be supported to stay at home or in their community setting."
However, she said the hospital acknowledges there are "challenges experienced by individuals in accessing community supports," and says Emerald Hall cannot discharge vulnerable patients unless safe placements are available.
There are currently nine patients at Emerald Hall, according to the health authority.
As of December 30 per cent, or 82 people, out of 270 people in mental health facilities "no longer required hospital admission" across Nova Scotia, and were awaiting placement in community-based care. Details on their diagnoses were not available.
Still, Sheila Wildeman, an associate professor at the Schulich School of Law who specializes in human rights, said the emergence of the Griffiths and Stavrakaki report strengthens the human rights case.
The teacher of administrative law also said the comments by the authors clearly put the government "on notice" of the risks of a human rights violation and of possible remedies.
"In human rights law, failure of a respondent to make efforts to alleviate discrimination where it has been reasonably alleged increases the likelihood of liability, as well," she wrote in an email.
In Ontario, a widely publicized ombudsman's report -- titled Nowhere to Turn -- that looked at the issue of inappropriate confinements has prompted notable change since its publication in 2016.
The ministry of Community and Social Services accepted all of its recommendations, committed to 375 additional placements in community residences in its last budget, and has added $677 million over four years to relevant budgets.
"The ministry has told its service providers and Developmental Services Ontario offices that no individual with a developmental disability should be left in a hospital where there is no medical need," a spokesperson wrote.
The Ontario ministry says it is making progress in finding appropriate homes.
As of last summer, there were 83 people with intellectual disabilities living in Ontario hospitals who were requesting residential supports, compared to 154 in March 2017.
A spokeswoman for the Nova Scotia Health Authority said she could not be sure if the 2006 report was ever released to the public.
The human rights inquiry continues Tuesday with more testimony from Pushie, the social worker who helped launch the complaint.

30 days of Langue des Signes Françaises (30dolsf)
🐎 Day 11 to 16
I'm bad at updating the challenge here, but I'm also bad at doing everyday in real life. It's okay, as long as I'm continuing the challenge, my pace is good. And I had my first café-signe : two hours of coffee (tea for me) while discussing in LSF with other peoples of my level and with a teacher.
Topic focus : Slowly introducing new words so I can have basic greetings, common conversation starters and phrases. As I'm slow, I'm more revising than learning.

06/30 days of New Year Momentum Challenge 🐎 [23 / 02 / 24]
Tea and fidget toys all the ways !
In more details, I try to do as many mindful moment as I can while breathing or drinking tea. The goals is to have little pocket of quiet and me-time. I also work with a fidget toy (my preferred is a fidget cube) in my other hand so I can make noise and be frustrated as I want on one side so the main side can be delicate or what I need it to be. I also tend to do many todo-list in the start of any intense session, just so I can quieten a little my mind and work in more peace.
In more self-care moment, when I'm stressed I try to take better care of my skin (because if I do not, I look like grating cheese). I don't like to take care of myself, but I will do it.
Here's my fidget toys (the picture is missing a rainbow slinky). The Simon don't have any battery, it's just the button. The strange thing in the middle is a astronomy ring. And each little egg have different things inside (sand, rocks, rubber rocks et caetera) so they have different weight and make different noises. And I have another big fidget cube in my handbag, for the case that I'm not home.

✅ +1 19/30 Days of Langue des Signes Françaises Learning challenge ✅ +6 17/30 Silmarillon reading ⬜ 0/30 Anki nerdy cards about the Silmarillon ⬜ Have one (1) perfect day on my tracking goals calendar
Side-goals : ✓ Finish my tea fanzine ✓ *NEW* Print tea fanzine ✗ Find a more satisfactory rhythm for my days ✗ 3/4 Write articles for my main blog (scotis.fr)

17 / 11 Day 11 of 30doi
My goal for this whole challenge : - Continue working on stabilizing my mental health - Doing one thing daily for myself that spark joy, outside of my routine - Learn to romanticize my life
My intention(s) for today : - Add more timeblock for tidying my home in my planning (only one time a week is not working for me, I don't do it at all, so more instances to do it is maybe more useful for me) - Make a new lookbook, winter oriented (mine is only for spring and summer) - Less multitasking
How it has gone : The day was slow to start, but I've made art all the afternoon and a beer&fanzine evening with my art atelier. It was a really good day for me. I'm happy (and sleepy).
