MARTIN QUINN as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 3.02

I don't understand why Scotty is even in Strange New Worlds as a regular character this season. I know the reason is just nostalgia baiting, but I don't think it's a very good reason. This is already a cast bursting at the seams with legacy characters as both regular and recurring characters--Pike, Spock, Uhura, M'Benga, T'Pring, Kirk, and so on. Scotty doesn't need to be there.
The more irritating thing is that this wouldn't even recognisably be a younger version of the TOS character if he had a different name. In the original series, Scotty was confident, competent, and professional. In Strange New Worlds, he's nervous, still learning the ropes, and still needs some professional polish. SNW Scotty would be a lot better if they had have just introduced a new character with these traits and said this is someone Pelia saw potential in.
Sure, you could make the case that maybe Scotty had to go through a character arc to get to where he is in the original series. My contention is that in a show like Strange New Worlds, that's a one episode story or maybe the B or C plot of a two-parter, not just how the character is for potentially the rest of the show.
Even if that was the direction you wanted to take the character in, you'd still have to have hints of what the original series character was like. Like, maybe he's professional and competent, but he still needs to work on his confidence, or maybe he's confident and competent but needs to learn his professionalism.
As is, SNW Scotty is closer to a watered down version of TNG Barclay than he is TOS Scotty. It's not even a particularly interesting watered down version of the character. At least Barclay was initially intended to be a commentary on the stereotypical Star Trek fan, not just a nervous wreck of an officer.
The other thing is that I also don't like how he's pretty much taken over Pelia's role in the story. Yes, Pelia is still officially the chief engineer, but Scotty is still performing that role in each episode to some extent. Like, he's the one being sent to the briefings, and when Pike sees Pelia, Scotty's also there.
This is an absolute waste of Pelia's character. She was completely underutilised in the previous season, and she's still underutilised this season. In a lot of ways, this is much worse because now they're giving scenes she could have been in to a man for the sake of nostalgia bait, and it's not even particularly good nostalgia bait.
Maybe this will change because we're still only three episodes into the new season as I write this, but my god. What an absolutely dreadful creative decision.

Young Scotty doesn't know it yet, but he will become the king of Buffer Time.
Edit:
I feel like they're going for: "Scotty works the best under immense pressure, when he thinks the ship is about to blow up." interpretation of his character.

A common complaint I’ve seen about Star Trek is that there is a lack of regular female characters besides Uhura and sorta Chapel. Now, that can be attributed to 60s sexism, but TOS didn’t have an unlimited budget, so creating a female character would probably lead to the elimination of a male regular. Which is why I ask you…
Remember, the semifinals of my Star Trek bracket start tomorrow! See you there.
