And god I have to figure out the dynamic for Seb Isla and Darien now huh?
I've always viewed Seb as being accepting and chill with whatever in Isla's life. Their relationship has never had its foundations in sex or even romance, but intimacy and trust. They watched the world devolve into war and the beginnings of the Planemeld as teenagers with no one else to lean on but each other. They reunite still in terrible states - Isla 3 years post Summerset and still mourning Darien, Seb 5 years post dying in Cyrodiil and being brought back from the dead Wrong - but respect each other's need to be alone even if it's self destructive. Choice, even bad choices, have been critical to their relationship and trust. When they finally unite for good, it's at Isla's worst and kicks Seb into being a functional person again. He's Alive finally, connecting with his godfather and Lady Arabelle and leaning on Isla for support as he reintegrates into society. And Isla finally has someone to talk to about the pressure of being the Hero and how much it takes from her without feeling like she needs to protect him from her. They've both been so beaten down, feel like they only have each other. Is it codependent? Yeah, probably. But they need it.
In all of this, I don't think they talked about Darien more than once. She doesn't like to talk about Coldharbour or Summerset and it's been so many years, there's no point in rehashing it or her relationship to Darien. It was something she didn't want to keep haunting her, and neither of them really wanted to answer the question of "what if he comes back?" or "do you still love him?" or "would you go back to him if you could?" It feels like a pointless question that only serves to hurt.
But now it's real!!! Neither of them even had time to consider this was an option!!! He's back now at a great cost and Isla can't believe she can even touch him again. But where does this leave Sebastien? Seb barely knows the concept of the guy, much less actually knows him. Darien is a ghost, a celebrity, a mythical figure of legend, an inside joke no one will explain to him. Does Darien want to be alone with Isla and his daughter and pretend it's 11 years ago? Was Seb actually just a temporary replacement for Darien all this time? Seb always trusts Isla in everything, but it's difficult to know her heart when it's about someone she was so secretive about, even with him. And after everything she's sacrificed, he worries she would sacrifice her happiness to reunite her family together.
All the while Darien has no clue who this edgelord following his wife around is, and Isla is going for the world record on longest panic attack.
She and Darien were always casual during her time being the Convenant Hero up until the end when they were pushing exclusivity and a life together, and rushed to get married during Summerset because they waited too long last time. She can't break Darien's heart and tell him she's with someone else after all this time (not to mention she's been guilted non stop by Gabrielle for giving up on Darien), but she also can't just abandon Seb when they have a so much deeper bond than she ever had with Darien. Darien was her first love, but it was during war and before she went through So Much Shit being the Hero. She's an entirely different person now. Is she too different to love him again? Is she too different for him to love her again?
And then there's the guilt over the idea of trying to somehow keep them both... Polyam isnt something she's ever considered because she's never Had to consider it. She's freaking out here man!!!

The prologue having Gabrielle and Skordo return makes Isla both really happy and feel extremely guilty. After Deadlands, she stopped keeping contact with a lot of her old friends and mostly kept close to Sebastien. She always felt like no one else could really understand the depth of her feelings on what it was like to be the Vestige, to constantly feel like the universe is forcing you into some kind of Hero role and always taking something in return. Gabrielle and Skordo are also constant reminders of Darien and losing him, and she hated not being able to shake that association when she was spiraling and needed friends.
And there's this mutual feeling between all three of them that makes meeting Seb a little weird. It's not like they expected Isla to remain single forever and wait for Darien, but she was always the beloved partner turned widow of their good friend. And now she's moved on with someone she met before Darien. Isla feels bad having to confront the fact she has somewhat moved on, now that she's being faced with some of the only people who still care about what happened to Darien. And Gabrielle and Skordo have to confront their own internalized expectations they did place on Isla. They didn't even realize they Had been placing expectations on her until she failed them.
And for Seb, it's the first time he's meeting these people. It's the first time he's truly being confronted by the ghost that haunts the narrative of his partner's life. Isla doesn't like to talk in depth about the Planemeld, and so Seb doesn't ask. And they all experienced the hell of the Planemeld and Coldharbour together. That's a trauma Seb cannot relate to, and feels unwelcome intruding upon. He dealt with the Planemeld in Tamriel with the dark anchors and dying to Molag Bal's daedra, but he was never tasked with the responsibility of ending it.
He also never met Vanus despite his partner's close business relationship to him and her work with the Mages Guild. Vanus has no strong feelings on Seb, but being rocketed into the fray with all these huge names after spending half a decade desperately trying to remain anonymous freaks Seb out. He got a taste of what being the Hero meant when he signed the contract with Mora during Necrom and Gold Road, but somehow being the Vestige (or really just adjacent to her) is so much worse.

Isla taking Sebastien down to Blackreach during New Life after their first year together so she can introduce him to Verandis. She *says* it's because she wants to see all her old friends again and didn't do that last year, but deep down she wants that approval from the man she views as a father to her, wants to make sure he likes Seb and that Seb likes Verandis.
Except 1) she forgot to say that Verandis looks a bit... Ghastly now. And scares the ever loving shit out of Seb when Verandis comes out from behind them, nearly making him thrice killed.
2) Seb actually already knew Verandis as a teenager because he was Emeric's godson and of course all of the noble families knew each other. But...
3) he didn't know Count Verandis Ravenwatch was a vampire until now. He wasn't exactly the smartest kid back then.
It's a very chaotic introduction

Sebastien Harbert, breton, hero, nightblade (sometimes necromancer)
Inspired by the "Breton Hero" from the ESO cinematic trailers, Sebastien grew up in High King Emeric's inner circle, being named Seb's godfather. Seb had little drive in his life as a young man other than trying to avoid his responsibilities. He traveled with the future Vestige Isla Kingston after the Soulburst and the two became fast friends. After an argument and assuming Isla had left High Rock for good, Seb ended their partnership and went off to the Three Banner's War.
Seb only learned about what happened to Isla after months in hiding following his own abandonment of the war. Dying twice, being puppeted by daedra, and all the expectations of his godfather caused Seb to snap and go into hiding. He only met Isla again years later in Elsweyr on accident during an odd job. They caught up again, but Seb wasn't ready to return to the real world yet and promised to write. A few more years passed before Isla begged to see him again following her own break, and he came back.
The two started working together with Emeric and Lady Arabelle for the peace talks in High Isle, and kept exploring Tamriel together after, following Isla's fate as the Hero. Seb even steps in for her in Necrom when she's faced with having to work with another daedric prince against her wishes, and signs the contract himself.
They'll never really define how they feel about each other, but they're the only people in the world who can really understand the other.

"Does it always feel that way?"
(gold road spoilers, just a little convo between Isla and Sebastien I had floating around my head after everything with Gold Road, on the inherently unsatisfying nature of being the Hero)
"Like what?" she asked, already having a feeling what this was about.
Sebastien fidgeted on the bed for a moment, tapping his fingers on the bedspread, trying to put his feelings to words. "A little... Unsatisfying. Like alright, we saved the world and everyone lived. Everything's back to normal. We even got Gadayn back! But I can't help but feel like the real winner was Mora. Getting to gloat and hold this power over us, that he Could wipe our memory of Ithelia but won't. It feels like nothing changed except we're a little worse off. And Ithelia - I can't help but feel a little bad for her, even after everything."
"Welcome to being a hero, Sebby." Isla placed a hand on his shoulder, feeling more like a mentor than a partner. She never wanted to drag another person into the heart of what being a Hero did to you, but there was nothing she could do when Sebastien stepped in to sign that contract with Mora over a year ago and kick-started this whole ordeal. "You don't always get to make the world a better place - you just have to narrowly prevent it from ending time after time. It sucks, it's unsatisfying, and someone has to do it. And unfortunately for you, it's been decided that person is me."
"Can't you just... decide not to do it?" he asked with a quiet desperation.
"I did, for a while." She took in a breath. "After... After Darien, I took all those years away to take care of Phoebe, to stop putting my friends in danger. But no matter what I do, I end up dragged back into the thick of things. There's something strange about it all. Like the world knew to take a pause when I would say no, but started up when it knew I would say yes."
She bent over herself at the edge of the bed, taking her head in her hands and looking away from him. "I can't ask you to do this again, Seb. I don't know if you have the same sort of cosmic protection I do, or if you will be the one we lose next time. But this job is dangerous. I'm happy to keep you as a friend, a partner in life, but I cannot ask you to do this with me."
"Kingston," he said, "You're not getting rid of me that easily."

Ohhh thinking about how Darien's Words of the Fallen note tells the player "Don't trust her. Don't trust any of the Daedric Princes. Not ever." and how that completely solidifies Isla's distrust and hatred of daedric princes and anything daedric related, after one made her lose her husband Twice.
And how almost a decade later, she's confronted with a daedric prince telling her that she has to work with him to save Nirn and sign into a contract with him to do so. It's triggering old traumas from the Planemeld, the Daedric Triad, Deadlands, of having to work with daedra to save the world - because she alone has to do it - only to be betrayed and still lose something or someone. How scared she is to be forced into giving away another piece of herself to the Hero title...
But instead, her best friend, her most trusted confidant, the person she's spent the last year and a half healing with and learning to love, steps in to sign the contract on her behalf, knowing the pain it would cause her to do so. Instead of making her sacrifice her vow to her husband, Sebastien steps into the Hero's shoes to learn about her experiences and protect her like she's always protected Tamriel.

Isla and Seb do the Necrom main quest as a pair, where he does anything that requires going to Apocrypha, and she does side quests in the Telvanni Peninsula while he's busy and tags along for the main quest events in the Peninsula. The one exception is when he's about to enter the Mythos to fight Blightcrown and Vaermina, and she demands entry to go assist him. As much trauma as she has with daedric realms and bargains with Princes, her one weakness is knowing Seb is placing himself in danger on her behalf and she refuses to let him do this alone.
This whole story has played out very interestingly for Mora as a character in Isla's story - he knows he needs the help of the Hero but whether or not she would agree is difficult to ascertain. She's opinionated and loud and knows better than to trust a daedra after years of experience, but she's also exhausted and very close to reluctantly accepting her fate because she knows she can't stop it. She doesn't form attachments to people like she used to, in a way that would give her a cause to fight for. But the one way she would Willingly choose to fight on Mora's behalf and genuinely care about the way things end? Involving the one person she has opened her heart to in the last several years into his plot.

Commission by my good pal @/somberlockhart on Twitter, @/viridianlockhart on discord I got back during the LotB era of my main Isla and her (???? what are we) teenage best friend Sebastien (aka the Breton hero)
Once they reunited for good after Deadlands and started working together for the High Isle peace talks, Emeric "persuaded" them to get a portrait commissioned together. You know, for peace talks reasons (he thinks they'd be cute together) and you try telling the High King no.

Second MQ spoilers, but just more OC rambling
Sebastien is one of the alliance war soldiers brought over during the portal sabotage and he gets mildly hurt because of it. He can't follow Isla around right away, so she finds all the alliance ambassadors on her own and Seb comes back to defend the assault against the palace or nobles district or whatever it's called. Good luck keeping a twice dead man away from a battle against the people responsible for one of those deaths lol
Which is for the best because if Seb heard how mean spirited Gabrielle was to Isla behind his back, I don't think he'd ever forgive her.
Isla definitely will, down the line. I think at some point she plans to sit Gabi and Skordo down and address the fact they did kinda expect her to be miserable and in mourning all her life. But right now she knows they're both Going Through It and it's not the time for therapy. Go to war
Early Solstice main quest spoilers below, went on an OC ramble last night about it:
Isla and Gabrielle's relationship after the prologue was already pretty rocky since it's 1) the first time they've seen each other since Greymoor and Isla hasn't even written to Gabi since before Deadlands 2) the first time Gabi and Skordo have met Isla's new partner and have to acknowledge she isn't going to be in mourning over Darien forever. Skordo handles it alright, he is just kinda awkward with Sebastien trying to bond like Dudes Do, and moves on from the widow expectations he placed on Isla.
But Gabrielle struggles way more. Finding Darien has been a constant side project of hers no matter what, and seeing the person she expects to want to find Darien more than her actually Move On... She's kinda mad! On top of all the stress of having to lead the Mages Guild and losing Vanus (even if he's just missing at this point), finding out her old friend "doesn't even care" about Darien being missing drives her over the edge.
She gets mean as hell! Bringing up Meridia as an ally because she helped with the Planemeld is cruel enough, but to then purposefully bring up Darien like Isla doesn't know him and then act like he willingly worked with Meridia is digging the knife into a wound that's already scarred over. Darien has always been the elephant in the room, the ghost haunting them all, but to name drop him in that scene at Broken Light Temple really felt like Gabrielle was trying to guilt Isla for moving on. Purposefully bring up old traumas because she needs to feel superior and thinks that maybe if she just reminds Isla about Darien, she will dump Sebastien and go back to being the perfect widow.
And to be clear, I really like this. Finally getting a chance for these two to have to confront their unhealthy coping mechanisms (Isla isolating away from all her friends, and Gabrielle holding onto the idea that one day they'll all be reunited and all relationships remain the same).

👋 hiya! My name is M (just the letter), they/them pronouns, 28 years old, ace, from the PNW. About me and links below ⬇️
I've played Skyrim and Oblivion, am actively playing Elder Scrolls Online (NA/PC @CaptainRele, im fine with friend requests, just tell me you're from tumblr), and it is the focus of this blog. I've never played Arena or Daggerfall (despite the url) and only barely "played" Morrowind. I've done a good amount of endgame stuff as a dps and tank, but my heart will always belong to my characters and their stories.
My favorite trials are Cloudrest, Sunspire, and Lucent Citadel, my favorite dungeons are Scalecaller Peak, Stone Garden, Unhallowed Grave, Coral Aerie, and Lep Seclusa, and my friends will say I have an unhealthy relationship with Blackrose Prison. I have the first 5 trial trifectas + swashbuckler supreme and mindmender, four Unchained clears, and complete pithkas up to Scribes of Fate. I'm that Breton Hero guy and also that Relequen guy, been one of them Darien guys, and accept my fate as that Leramil guy. Breton main, been playing since late 2018, 13k+ hours and ~2900cp.
Was a lot more active and social in tesblr a few years back but now I'm a bit more private now and mostly here to post ESO news, my little guys, and my endgame achievements. You're weird and bitter and hate fun if you still scream that ESO isn't canon or act like it isn't a TES game after a decade, especially if you also languish over no TES6.
I am not good at tagging my reblogs anymore, but I do try to tag my spoilers for content that is either freshly released or still on the PTS. Usually it will be "(patch name) spoilers" or "(patch number) spoilers" if it is nameless
I'm more social on our ESO discord, Scalecaller's Minions (invite link embedded). Our mods are @/scalecallerpeak @/yffresbeard and @/tonal-modulator and it is 18+ (we're just all adults now and prefer no minors there)
My twitch is here, I stream my dungeon and trials progs from time to time. Nothing professional, mostly just for my own performance review but maybe you'll catch a clear :3
