I feel like a lot of times, Robby gets more grace than he probably should on grounds that he was having a bad day, but I think one instance in which I think he actually gets a fair amount of flak that I don't think is warranted is about the fellowship he recommended Langdon for.
I've seen a lot of posts along the lines of "he recommended Langdon and not Collins for a job Collins would be a better fit for", and I really don't think that's the implication here. It was a fellowship. There's a CV and personal statement that needs to be written, multiple letters of recommendation, an academic writing sample – some programs even involve a match like residencies. It's an application that Langdon had to submit. There is no chance that Robby just recommended him without him having to ask. That's not how this works. Langdon's surprise, such that it was, was about what Robby had written, not that he'd written a recommendation. And we have no indication that Collins was interested in that position, that she applied, or that Robby didn't write her a recommendation.
Like, I think there's certainly criticism of Robby in this area – the fact he's taking this time to be so encouraging of Langdon and praising him many times for his job performance while being so critical of all his female residents for whom it wasn't their first day on the job and only offering perfunctory praise – I talk about it the most with Samira, of course, and I think he's the worst to her overall, with the absolutely never apologizing being unique to the two of them, but he's also a huge asshole to McKay and Collins – is really not a good look. It's reminiscent of the way out of all the people on their first day, the one he singled out to encourage throughout the day was Whitaker, even after he witnessed Langdon screaming in Santos's face. But I don't think not recommending Collins for the fellowship is a part of that.
Santos revealed something new about Langdon, that he doesn't know how to deal with push back. Robby has this flaw, too – it's a running issue in his relationship with Samira, McKay, Collins – he just has a little more of a handle on it. That's another issue, though. What is a part of this issue is that until Robby saw the way Langdon interacted with Santos, I don't think we really have a reason to believe that either Collins or Langdon was more qualified for the role. They both had the necessary skills. It only becomes apparent that Collins might be a better fit because of Santos.
There was one fic I read that suggested Robby wrote them both recommendations, and Langdon's was glowing, while Collins's was just good. That I find very believable! Or that Robby brought up the fellowship as something he might want to apply for, while Collins came to Robby to ask about it. Or that Collins wasn't interested at all because medicine is a second career for her, and she'd like to start practising independently ASAP, rather than spending another two years training with mediocre pay. There are a lot of things that I find compelling. And I'm certainly not saying there's nothing to explore about how Robby views Langdon and Collins very differently and expresses more investment in Langdon's career. I think it's a hugely rich topic! But I think the "Robby didn't recommend Collins" line of thought isn't all that fair.

applications for the moderating team and details about issue 1
Tumblr media
hello everyone! thank you so much for the interest i've seen in the magazine! currently, applications for the following positions will be opening on the 7th of april, 00.00 IST, and will close on the 14th of april, 2 am IST.
as there is not enough time to compile the first issue (i don't want to take any attention away from a friend's twst summer zine, as it is going to be wonderful), we will be opening applications for limited portions of the team! applications will reopen again in july, and the date will be given in advance.
managing editor: will handle the day-to-day functions of the teams with me. basically will be a second head mod. will need some experience modding zines (a minimum of 1).
content manager: handles the number of submissions, emailing the submittors, and handles the senstivities as well (the tw/cw)
fanfic editor: will be checking the fics for grammar, and changes the formatting in some areas. may need to contact people about their work occasionally.
art and design lead: needs to work on each issue's visual style, which can vary overall depending on the theme. must have some experience with design software (yes, canva counts).
people can apply to one or more positions! it is also likely that we would be taking interns for these positions in the future as well so people can build up experience in modding/editing.
Tumblr media
issue 1's title and theme is halcyon (which means a nostalgia about a time/experience you can never have again). submissions for fanart and fanfics open on the 15th of april, 00.00 IST and close on the 30th of april, 2.00 AM IST.
while romantic content between characters and the reader is allowed, we ask that largely, gen! reader be submitted, since we'd like for the magazine and your story to be read by everyone! we have no issues with fem!/male!/nb!/any other kind of reader insert :)
any romantic content featuring ortho will be banned. i understand that it's a fine line, and while i agree that minors are allowed to write ortho in a romantic sense (since his canon age is usually assumed to be 16), most writers and submitters are adults, and that is weird. since i may not be able to cross-verify everyone's age, i would like to sideline the issue entirely.
for this volume, we will not be accepting any twst ships. ship content would be featured in the special issues :) (more details to be revealed later on)

Any advise for applying to PhD programs? Congrats by the way!
thank you!! sorry this is so late my notifications are in an absolute state and this is the first time I've been on desktop all week
I'm not sure if I'm the best one to give advice for applying to PhDs cause I honestly got rejected from SOOO many before I got this one. I'd applied for maybe 15-20 (bear in mind, this was in the sciences so they were all paid positions in funded projects, if you want advice on self funded I'm not the one) and came in second or third place more times than I can remember, which is totally useless at the end of the day cause they're only picking one person.
By the time this one rolled around I'd more or less given up and was seriously considering just moving to LA and becoming a tattoo artist lmao. But on a serious note it's super easy to get discouraged, especially when you're regularly getting top 3 candidates out of like 100 applicants and STILL not managing to get the top spot, and I don't really have amazing advice for that because I did get entirely discouraged and had basically given up the ghost at this point.
ANYway though I got recommended for this position by my former master's supervisor and immediately thought I was way underqualified for it, but decided to just apply anyway cause it was really no effort and I had nothing to lose (except my remaining shred of mental fortitude after yet another rejection but whatever). I bullshitted a motivation letter using the main bit of advice my master's supervisor gave me (it needs to sicken you a little to read it, go in and write in such a confident voice that you're the only one for this position that it feels kinda gross to write it, can expand on this further if you want) and submitted that and all my other things and got selected to interview!
So at this point I'm still kind of in my fuck it we ball half given up state but even half given up I'm still an academic weapon so I spent hours reading and preparing (we were tasked with doing a 15min presentation and I godsweat everything I'm asked to do). I also came off a little manic in the actual interview cause I hadn't slept and after doing so many interviews that led nowhere my nerves were completely shot, but I think that ended up working to my benefit because I came off as really bubbly and personable? Which is always a benefit in science-oriented spaces because there's always gonna be a million guys who know all the science and techniques and theory but can't hold a basic conversation, and you can really set yourself apart by being an engaging even slightly jokey type character. So overall being in the fuck it we ball mindset and letting my kind of tweaky goofy not at all stuffy academic professional side out ended up working to my advantage I think because they seemed to really like me in the interview. I'm also generally good at presenting and making visually pleasing, clean presentations (if you can make something tasteful looking that isn't just blocks of black text on a white default slide you're gonna be cooking with gas here).
Like I said before my qualifications (as in actual scientific experience pertaining to this project) were lacking to the point where I was strongly considering not even applying, so I really think it was the interview that sealed the deal for me. I gave a well-rehearsed, clean presentation that I practiced countless times beforehand, and even though they gave me two publications to work off of for the presentation I did my own further research and included figures and information outside of what I was provided. I also found a way to spin this specific project into the exact logical next step for my career, tie it into my own personal values and the impact I want to have on the world, and just basically make it look like this one project was made for me specifically and I wanted to be part of it because of what it was, NOT because I was ready to do any project that was dropped in front of me at that point. Especially in STEM, I feel like coming off as personable, agreeable, and social is going to give you a major advantage. They're not looking for a science robot who never leaves the lab, they're looking for someone who can present at conferences, write effective and clear publications and communications, work in a group in multiple different settings, go with the flow, solve problems etc.
Reading back on this now I'm realizing "get to the brink of giving up, plan running away and joining the circus, and be visibly mentally ill in the interview" isn't amazing advice but I uh, hope this helped somehow. If I can do it anyone can do it man.

Who's the lucky one? Ko Hyunji's first pick is a total of 12 people
Who's the lucky one? Ko Hyunji's first pick is a total of 12 people
Ko Hyun-ji, who received the attention of several teams, headed to KB Stars with the honor of being the first overall, while Katie Timmerman, who participated as a foreign national, wore Shinhan Bank's uniform as the second place in the second round.
WKBL held a 2023-2024 WKBL new player selection meeting at Cheongju Gymnasium on the 4th. Of the total 28 participants, only 12 headed for the professional league. None of the prospective college graduates were chosen.
Cheongju KB Stars was the main character of the overall No. 1 nomination. KB had 50% to pick the first place with Bucheon Hana One Q, who was eliminated from the playoffs last season, and won the first place nomination for the first time in four years through a half-and-half probability. The honor of the first place went to Ko Hyun-ji of Supia Girls' High School.
Ko Hyun-ji is the daughter of Cho Moon-joo, a gold medalist in women's basketball at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, and will wear the uniform of Kookmin Bank, which her mother wore when she was unemployed. He ranked first overall in four categories: Combine Max Vertical Jump Rich (303.4 cm) and Max Vertical Jump (73.4 cm) on the 4th.
KB manager Kim Wan-soo said, "I've been watching Ko Hyun-ji since elementary school," and Ko Hyun-ji said, "It's a great honor to come to KB Stars as the first priority. I personally thought I wasn't lucky this year, but I think I was in trouble to come to KB Stars. "I will adapt to the team quickly and become a player who can help the team like my mother and shine on the team," he said with tears.
The first round was followed by Busan BNK Sum, Incheon Shinhan Bank, Yongin Samsung Life Insurance, BNK, and Asan Woori Bank.
BNK exercised its nomination rights twice in the first round because it conducted a trade with Hana One Q after the nomination lottery ceremony. He sent Kim Si-on to Hana One Q and received the right to nominate second place in the first round. Kim Jong-un of Hyosung Girls' High School was selected as the second most valuable nomination right obtained through the trade. It was a choice that focused on reinforcing the forward. Forward Park Da-won (Bundang Management High School) was selected in the fifth place.
Third place was Heo Yoo-jung of Bundang Management High School. Heo Yoo-jung, along with Park Da-won and Byun Ha-jung, who submitted applications together, swept all of the 2023 Spring Federation matches, association organ matches, and weekend league king matches. As a guard, Shinhan Bank strengthened its guard lineup by choosing Heo Yoo-jung, who has stable game management and 2-to-2 deployment shooting. Samsung Life Insurance named Lee Ye-na (Cheongju Girls' High School) fourth, while Woori Bank chose Byun Ha-jung (Bundang Management High School), Byun So-jung's younger brother, as sixth.
After a short meeting, the second trade proceeded with the start of the second round nomination. It was a trade in which BNK recruited guard Shim Soo-hyun instead of giving Shinhan Bank the right to nominate second place in the second round. As a result, BNK did not exercise its nomination rights in the second round.
Woori Bank picked Hwabong High School forward Kim Sol as the first place in the second round. Shinhan Bank, which received the right to nominate second place in the second round from BNK, recruited Katie Timmerman (Concordia University), who participated as a foreign national. Timmerman said, "It's an honor to be able to live a professional life where my mother was born. "I want to work hard and make my mother proud," he said.
Samsung Life Insurance picked Sungui Girls' High School guard Kim Soo-in as the third place in the second round, and Shinhan Bank picked Sunil Girls' High School Center Seo Jin-young as the fourth place. Shin Tae-hee (Sangju Girls' High School) and Sung Soo-yeon (Chuncheon Girls' High School) then headed for the professional league.
In the third round, all six clubs gave up their nominations. None of the seven college graduates were called

Teacher training: I got an interview!
So I submitted my teacher training application to UCAS last Friday. Today I got a call from a London number and I was like 99% sure it was the usual scam. Instead it was one of my options. They asked me if I'd be happy to have a Skype interview soon as the first stage of the interview process, and then have the second stage in London when I'm back to the UK in February. I'm quite excited because apparently that second stage is going to be me having to deliver a lesson, which I've done a few times already for proper job interviews, so I don't mind it at all. There is though a written task to complete too, and I bet it will be either a Latin translation or an essay... hopefully the latter. Anyway, it's altogether great news, so all good.
Also, today I met with my Latin and Greek teacher from high school. She was very happy to see me and very proud of me for making the decision to pursue the route of teaching and not commit to a PhD straightaway. She also said that I must not undersell myself, that I know my worth and that I must have faith in my abilities. She also said that I'm a very 'tangled' person, as in the sort of person who's got a bit of an intricate way of thinking and living life... It's hard to explain, but it's spot on. Anyway, she was overall very encouraging and supportive, and she asked me to write her more often to let her know about my progress, that it makes her happy to read my emails and know I'm doing well. I had forgotten just how a lovely person she is. It's great to know that there are so many people on my side who want me to do well. As ever, I'll do my best. Hopefully, everything will be fine.

2 back-to-back days of hard graft and manual labour and my body feels like it falling apart! Is it obvious that I'm usually a desk job person? 😂 Looking forward to when my body adapts to the demands of the community garden.
Cornhill Community Garden
I had another bash at the garden today after I swung by Ian's to pick up the solar generator.
Martin was there to help and we managed to get all the turf and soil that was dug up yesterday laid down to prop up the ends of where the containers will go.
We were able to make a good start on the second container site and now both bits are well on their way to being level.
Tumblr media
A very nice Turkish lady came to say hi and brought us tea and coffee to thank us for giving the community a garden. It was really, really sweet of her!
Shortly after that, Martin went home and I stayed on site to rake over the soil in an attempt to get it to dry out faster. Overall, the site was left looking much better than when we started.
Tumblr media
It's pretty clear that we'll need to get some sand down to get the patches as level and stable as possible in time for the containers coming in. Without a strong and flat base of sand, the paving slabs will most likely break under the prolonged weight of the containers.
I had a look online and, for the amount we need, it's almost impossible to get it delivered - too bulky for a normal delivery, not bulky enough for a bulk delivery. Of course...
So I've sent a SOS out to the committee to see if anyone with a car is able to ferry me to and from a DIY shop to get sand in time for Monday's session with the volunteers. As of yet, no one's gotten back to me.
McDonald's
After some lunch and a rest, I made a start on the poster that will go up around the community to notify them of McDonald's Planning Application. This was sent to Martin for feedback.
I also started to take a look at the documents that McDonald's had submitted in their application, but it's all a bit over my head. I'll need to spend some more time on this tomorrow to make sense of it.
There are already lots of objections on the planning portal, which is promising. Safe to say, our community is not Lovin It...
