I feel so old
So, I was born in 97 raised by a single father born in 78. Just to set the scene for understanding. Now, I knew the movies I was watching growing up were a little older you know because they were all on VHS. But I never realized how old until now... So, I was thinking about an older movie I watched that I loved called secret of NIMH but couldn't remember how to spell NIMH, so I decided to look it up on a whim. Guess when that movie came out. 1982.
This got me curious, so I started looking up some other movies, the first Balto movie came out in 95, not bad. Brother Bear came out in 2003, not bad either. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron came out in 2002 and Spirited Away in 2001. Not bad either. But then it got to the others...
The Last Unicorn: 1982
Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul school: 1988
Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant werewolf: 1988
Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers: 1987
Grave of the Fireflies came out in the US in 1989
The Sword and the Stone: 1963
The Dark Crystal: 1982
Labyrinth: 1986
I feel like my father raised me in a pocket dimension I swear. I'm a Gen Z raised by a Gen X to be a Gen X, like that is the best way to describe it. I remember reading the Dragon Lance books with my dad for my mandatory reading assignments from school, we watched a lot of early 2000s comedy central and MTV. Just about every standup comedian I watched with him was from his generation, I grew up with the rock, metal, rap and pop music of his generation. My old man literally just hand-me-downed his childhood and teenage years to me the moment I was smart enough to understand something more complex than Barney.

I wonder why there's so many children stories about mice and other small critters behaving like people.
I mean, on the top of my head, I can name the Redwall books (I was OBSESSED with Martin as a child), Don Bluth's An American Tail and The Secret of Nihm (with their sequels), Disney's Basil of Baker Street, and the absolutely adorable Brambly Hedge series (I had the one about the four seasons as a child and the illustrations are so absolutely charming).
Like, when you think about it it's SUCH a specific trope. I am sure the anthropomorphisation intrinsic to many classic tales and parables is partly at the root of it, but it goes beyond it because it's not just speaking animals, it's speaking mice and rats specifically behaving and dressing like tiny people.
Dunno I just find it cute

Movie night!
Hey everyone! So last week I wasn't feeling well and couldn't host. But this week I'm back! And we're doing an animated mouse double feature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When? In about two hours Where? Right here! We're usually talking non-stop in the chat, but if you just want to quietly watch along too, that's just fine! We'll be happy to have you either way. ^__^ At the end of every movie night, we discuss what to watch next week. So if you have a suggestion you want to put forward, you gotta be there! =p

Watched Secret of NIMH the other day and then put on Secret of NIMH 2 on right after. How the fuck did I like that movie so much as a kid???? I know all Don Bluth movie sequels are just Like That but that one felt especially egregious in how deep the quality fell

@bobeatspie300 is... Is this us? Is this show about us?/ref
I wonder if “we have to torture this special character. in the lab facility. with secret science.” is an interest all 12-year-old children share or were we just the generation exposed to Maximum Ride

I still remember the person who called Tina a "pink eyed rip off of Mrs Brisby."
Because the concept of a mouse wearing a red cape can only exist in one book/movie.

Why would you do this to me, OP?! It’s like making me pick my favorite non-existent child.
THIS IS NOT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST. I just wanted to highlight some beloved and underrated nostalgic classics.
I am NOT counting: Studio Ghibli, DC, Marvel, Scooby-Doo, sequels/prequels, and most other franchises. I made an exception with MLP and Care Bears because both films were produced at the beginning of their franchises, as opposed to the G.I. Joe series, Transformers, etc. There's a LOT to cover in the 80s-90s, hence why I split the two polls. This is basically Don Bluth's Era lol.
90's Poll
Happy voting! ❤

How would the ROs react to finding the MC (clandestinely) reading a steamy romance novel? 🫣
Kieran: Well. You know what. They do the exact same thing. It’s embarrassing enough when they get caught so….they’ll keep their discretion and feign ignorance 👍 (but also they’ve read that one it’s very good have you reached that one scene where—?)
Nihm: Oh hey, Kieran reads those. They unfortunately do not realize why anyone would be embarrassed about enjoying them so they don’t realize it’s supposed to be secret and might totally blow MCs cover by like loudly announcing the book title. “Oh, [insert horribly cliche steamy romance book title]! Is it any good?” :D
Lilith/Lucien: Ooh, what’re we reading? Smut? Oh hey, Kieran reads those. They’ve got a bunch more in their room if MC ever wants L to “borrow” one for them when they’ve finished that one. *leans over shoulder to read* “Oh, wow that sure is a scene. Oh. Oh wow. Damn, she’s flexible. Holy shit. …I could definitely do that better though.” (this is an invitation)
Aurynn: “Oh hey, Kieran reads those. Which one is this?” *snatches book to read the cover and lets out a long, low whistle* “Ooo-oooh. Isn’t this one of the more, er, erotic ones? What scene are we at? Oh. Oh. My gods. And you’re just reading this here? In public?” (pretends to be increasingly and loudly scandalized even if the scene was the most innocuous scene ever just to watch mc fluster and have to find a way to shut him up. Also you should not have gotten caught bc he won’t forget this or ever let mc live it down)
Samira: She’s not going to judge but depending on MCs personality she might find it surprising. She’d stay quiet and pretend not to notice but would be reading over MCs shoulder out of curiosity. At a cheesier/spicier scene she’d be unable to temper her own amusement any longer as she can’t take this situation seriously anymore—it’s either cutely endearing or so out of place on MC—that she starts incredulously reading the scene out loud much to MCs sudden horror.
