Face in the Mirror

Morning made it's way over the land, spilling into midday. After a bit of work was done, Riesse made her way to the desk in her office. Taking up her quill, she put thought to paper as best she could. 

How do you 'look at yourself in a mirror' and not be broken at the reflection starring back at you? The crude honesty glaring in your face. Stripped of mask, naked and without the lie you've fashioned to hide yourself from the world covering you, how do you face the truth of what you are? What you've allowed yourself to become? For years, long wasted years, I played the part I felt I had to. Believing what I did, I did for those I loved. Believing that -if- I cared enough, loved enough, gave enough, I could erase the pain people had in their lives.

That -I- a mere woman of flesh and bone, had the power to change peoples lives for the better simply because I wanted it so badly for them. Mistakenly, time and time again, I've pushed people, pushed my way into their lives as if I had a right to do so, made 'just' by the simple fact that I loved them. How egotistical and self righteous have I become!

How many times have I shaken my head, crying out, even in the silence of my thoughts, 'No! Just do it -this- way! Listen to me!' only to not realize, MY way is NOT their way nor is it the -best- way for them. I have preached time and time again that life is a journey; One that is taken by putting one foot in front of the other. I have bulldozed my belief that if you don't take a chance, you lose out on the possibility of 'what if', that you find regret in not having tried..that you exist without living. What a complete and utter fool!

I am a hypocrit in the fullest extent of the word. Hiding behind the facade I've created, always fearing the pain life gives with each lesson learned because I was too weak, too terrified of the scars coming from failing!

I have hidden so long behind the mask that I have created the emptiness making it's home in my heart. The barrier I reside behind, built brick by brick, has kept people from seeing me. The -real- me. The vulnerable, lost, broken me. I DID this! Me. I MADE ME THE INVISIBLE PERSON I AM! It was by no ones hand other than my own.

When Ace urged me to let go, to let loose, so deep was my anger, my rage, at myself for what I'd done that it was as if a damn had burst. Power surged and flared through my veins, the very marrow of my bones. It gushed from me, washing away every trace of the wall I'd worked so hard to create over the years. It swept away the blindfold covering my eyes and washed away the lies covering me more securely than any gown I could dress myself in.

And now.... what do I see as I stare back at the mirror held to my face? A woman that is utterly lost. Tragic and alone, broken by her words, her actions, her own doing. I no longer recognize the reflection in the mirror. She is... a stranger... and -that- terrifies me more than -anything- ever has before in my life.
