Today was...a sad day. It wasn’t supposed to be, but...well. Things happened sometimes. Things like having what you previously only suspected become reality. He’ll get better, Davey would say to people, lying through his teeth, even as he coaxed Les back into school and counted the days until his peers would graduate.

He was supposed to be up there with them.

Normally Davey went straight home after selling - it was rare he hung out with the others, even now that he’d formed a solid friendship with many. The only one he made deliberate time for was Race - his lover was a rock in ways Davey never imagined he could be. And tonight, Davey went to find him at the lodging house, his chest tight.

The moment he caught sight of Race, he snagged his elbow and cleared his throat. “Hey, can we just...get out of here for a little while?” Even as Davey smiled, it didn’t quite reach his eyes.
