Smile for me week day 5: Family

I just.. really love the headcanon that Boris adopts Putunia and/or Flower Kid post Habitat.  Give me loving dad Boris who is striving to be a better dad than his own ever was.  Give me a Boris who cherishes every moment he spends with his kid.  Just give me a happy post-Habitat Boris.  And of course, any time something like this happens, Kamal is always the first to hear about it.

(Also give me Boris and Kamal eventually dating and Kamal moving in with Boris and becoming Putunia’s second dad, aaaaaaaaa)

Day Two - Happiness Fakt/PSA

It’s not insomnia. Nat’s had all kinds of tests done on the way she sleeps. The hours she sleeps. She’s just nocturnal. Always has been.

So Habit’s nighttime public service announcements are just weird. And annoying. A reminder she isn’t normal because she isn’t diurnal.

It’s always that cheery chime. The cartoon puppet smiling. The handmade scrawl of “Dr. Habit’s Bedtime Stories for Insomniacs and Bad Children.” Ironic saccharine. It’s something her friends would’ve loved.

It’s something her dad would’ve hated.

Nat rolls her eyes at the screen. There’s one in every room. To cheer them up, Kamal explained. He didn’t sound too sure about it.

And just as the last tinny note of the cutesy theme ends, the PSA gets weird. 

It’s always the same. Dark. So dark Nat has to squint to figure out what’s being filmed. A staircase or a door just slightly ajar. A window or a light at the end of a hallway. A shrub or a streetlamp.

Nat’s never heard Doctor Habit wandering around. She’s stayed awake all night, laying in bed and listening. For footsteps. Breathing. The little beep of a camera recording. Anything, really.

Maybe it’s stock footage of the Habitat, Nat considers, things filmed before anyone showed up. But sometimes she swears things change. Not a lot, just enough to make her doubt herself.

And the captions are super weird. Like the guy’s losing it up in his office all day. Stuff about bedtime stories and smiles. About something lurking at night.

It’s creepy. Like something a cult would put on.

Nat wants to turn the screens off, just for a little bit and just at night. But there’s no buttons on the screens. They’re set into the wall. She considers smashing the one in her room.

Maybe it’ll stop trying to tell her it’s bedtime and stop insisting she just smile more.

Family outing

Sometimes a family is a large ex-dentist (who is also possibly a cryptid) with childhood trauma that he’s learning to manage, his anxiety-ridden ex-assistant turned husband, and their adopted daughter who fights for justice.

Wow, I actually finished a prompt event for once..!  I feel so happy!  This week has definitely been fun, and I really enjoyed the event!  I hope you guys did, too :-)

As he interlaced his fingers repeatedly between each other and hugged himself, he could not help but think about the strange dreams he had been having about him… After the incident with Martha, it pained Kamal to think about how he and Boris had grown apart, though eagerly looked forward to meeting with him again. Witnessing Flower Kid’s kindness inspired him to do the same for Boris, as he had, though he felt things were unusual lately…
