what's your fav Odyssey block card?
Hot take here mine's Krosan Verge, but I kinda like that they didn't complete the cycle. GW deserves a special treat once in a while! (and they sTOLE Horizon Canopy's special status 😔)
i fucking LOVE the signetlands and i adore decimate (did you know they started printing reminder text on decimate in mkm? :3) and the incarnations are iconic. shadowmage infiltrator goes hard cuz ive been really into saboteur effects lately! plus, gosh flashback is so cool, and im really into squirrels, so all the token flashbackers are so swag.

but the real answer for what my favorite odyssey block card is is definitely cabal ritual!!

sooo fucking cool omg. 2 for 5 with a forcrd buildaround?? sick as fuck. plus theyre giving the exclusive art the future sight border and its SO COOL in mystery booster 2 so if i dont pull one im DEFINITELY picking that up!! i lovee cabal rit so much

Topi’s Daily Card #997: Shadowmage Infiltrator
This card is probably one of my favorite little evasive creatures, for multiple reasons. Number one, it’s Johnny Magic in the artwork, this card being John Finkel’s Magic Invitational card. According to stories from around that time, Finkel’s first card was a Wrath for 1WWU that untapped four lands, akin to a lot of the Urza ‘free’ spells. This was his second submission, only changed slightly from the card you see above by dropping the power from a 2/3 to a 1/3. The card was great, destined for competitive play for sure... and then Psychatog happened. Shadowmage Infiltrator never really got much play in standard, even when reprinted in Time Spiral. Still, this card is amazing, giving you card draw and a good man to hold whatever sword and whatever equipment you want. To me it’s a must have in a lot of U/B builds, or anything that wants evasive creatures. He never got to shine in Standard, but Shadowmage Infiltrator is one of my favorite Dimir colored cards of all time.

How do you feel about discourse on cards like Snap caster or Shadowmage infiltrator? What's your opinion on the subject?
For those that need some context, there is a group of cards that were designed by the winners of old Magic invitational tournaments. The prize for these tournaments was to work with Wizards to design a card and have the winner’s likeness featured in the card’s art. The group of cards includes the cards pictured below and many others.
Snapcaster Mage - Tiago Chan - 2007; Shadowmage Infiltrator - Jon Finkel - 2000; Solemn Simulacrum - Jens Thorén - 2002; Dark Confidant - Bob Maher - 2004
The invitational no longer exists, and hasn’t for longer than the vast majority of Magic players have been playing the game. The invitational winner cards are some of the most iconic cards in the game, and the versions with the winners’ likenesses will continue to see play for as long as Magic is played. The cards were still created by those winners and no one can take that away.
Sylvan Safekeeper - Olle Råde - 1997; Meddling Mage - Chris Pikula - 2000; Ranger of Eos - Antoine Ruel - 2006
Therefore, I feel that it’s fine for Wizards to reprint Invitational winner cards with new art not depicting the original winner. Being able to do so gives Wizards the ability to keep the game fresh and not be tied forever a single look for any specific card or character going forward. The alternative would be being tied to the original art forever and then not reprinting the card when its art style no longer matches the tone or flavor of the game.
Avalanche Riders - Darwin Kastle - 1998; Rootwater Thief - Mike Long - 1999; Voidmage Prodigy - Kai Budde - 2001; Rakdos Augurmage - Terry Soh - 2005

Cloud of Fairies, Treachery, bourgeoning, explore, basking rootwalla, the green dog from Odyssey, Werebear, Gaea’s Skyfolk, Maybe rebels? Spellshapers from Masques block, Avatar of Woe, Repercussion. Dark or Cabal Ritual , maybe cabal, I could see Golgari Threshold being a thing. Sisay, Hannah. That black last ditch effort card from Battlebond. I triple dog dare them to reprint Leovold for modern. Kaalia would be fun too. Shardless Agent, Malestrom Wanderer, The ethrium minotaur. Rotlung reanimator And a bunch of those clerics from onslaught block. Maybe most of the champion makes the card cards. Avalanche riders, Sylvan safekeeper, Shadowmage infiltrator, the Kia Budde one from Onslaught any others that I am missing. Maybe a Druid subtheme I forget about the ones from Lorwyn block but if werbear is in, maybe kamahl, Seton and any other synergistic ones from Odyssey. Some of the buyback spells maybe.
And given Modern’s reliance on non basics I wonder how much land hate they would put in. If any?
Also I wonder if maze of it’s is too oppressive. Hm. Can’t wait to see what they do.
Modern Horizons Predictions
So they said that there would be reprint of cards that are not currently modern legal, to implement them in the format; what you y’all think some of those cards might be? I’m not talking about stuff you WANT to see like Force of Will, which, lets be honest, would be terrible for the format, but rather stuff that could easily fit in the format without warping it. I’ll start off with mine:
Baleful Strix
Urza’s Bauble
Pox
Hymn to Tourach
Mox Diamond (this one might be too strong though..)
What do you all think? What are some cards you feel could have a place?

The first invitational card that always comes to my mind is Shadowmage Infiltrator with John Finkel in the art.
Do you know why the invitational stopped? I assume money was the biggest factor?
It was a bunch of things. Money was a factor, but the event actually wasn’t that expensive to run in the big scope of things. The biggest problem was the people at Wizards (the ones making the decisions about events) at the time didn’t really get the event. They didn’t understand why the players enjoyed it.
