Today a report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed strong economic growth of 3.3% in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2023, setting growth for the year at 3.1% (by comparison, in the first three years of Trump’s term, before the pandemic, growth was 2.5%). A year ago, economists projected that the U.S. would have a recession in 2023, and forecast growth of 0.2%. 

Meanwhile, unemployment remains low, wages are high, and inflation is receding. As Gabriel T. Rubin put it in the Wall Street Journal today, “The final three months of the year looked a lot like the soft landing Fed officials are seeking to achieve.” 

There is a major political story behind this impressive economic one. Since 1981, lawmakers have insisted that cutting taxes, regulation, and the social safety net would create much faster and more efficient growth than was possible under the system in place between 1933 and 1981.

In the earlier era, lawmakers regulated business, imposed progressive taxes, and supported workers to make sure that ordinary Americans had the resources to fuel the economy through their desire for homes, consumer goods, and so on. But with the election of Republican president Ronald Reagan, lawmakers claimed that concentrating wealth on the “supply side” of the economy would enable wealthy investors and businessmen to manage the economy more efficiently than was possible when the government meddled, and the resulting economic growth would make the entire country more prosperous. 

The problem was that this system never produced the economic boom it promised. Instead, it moved money dramatically upward and hollowed out the American middle class while leaving poorer Americans significantly worse off. 

When they took office, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris rejected “supply side” economics and vowed to restore buying power to the demand side of the economy: ordinary Americans. They invested in manufacturing, infrastructure, small businesses, and workers’ rights. And now, after years in which pundits said their policies would never work, the numbers are in. The U.S. economy is very strong indeed, and at least some voters who have backed Republicans for a generation are noticing, as United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain made clear yesterday when the union made a strong and early endorsement of President Biden.  

So here is the political story: Republicans cannot run for office in 2024 by attacking the economy, although Trump has tested that message by saying the economy is “so fragile” and “running off the fumes” of his administration and that it will soon crash. He has promised to cut taxes again, which is not likely to impress many voters these days. Media stories are beginning to reflect the reality of the economy, and people are starting to realize that it is strong.

At the same time, the Republicans are in huge trouble over their overturning of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision recognizing the constitutional right to abortion. A poll taken in June 2023, a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe, showed that 69% of Americans want to see Roe reinstated. But, to appeal to their base, Republican leaders are backing more, rather than less, extreme measures: a federal prohibition of abortion. 

So the MAGA Republicans, who back Trump, need an election issue. They are trying to turn the migration influx at the southern border into an issue that can win for them in November. In December 2023, extremist House Republicans refused to pass a supplementary funding bill that is crucial to Ukraine’s effort to resist Russia’s 2022 invasion, insisting that the “border crisis” must be attended to first, although they refused to participate in the negotiations that Biden and senators promptly began.

Then, after news hit that the negotiators were close to a deal, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Fox News Channel personality Laura Ingraham told the television audience that they had both spoken to Trump and he opposed a deal. Negotiations continued, and last night, journalists reported that Trump was pressuring Republican lawmakers to reject any deal because he wants to run on the issue of immigration and “doesn’t want Biden to have a victory.” 

Today, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) told CNN’s Manu Raju that “the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling.” Attacking Romney on social media, Trump said: "[W]e need a Strong, Powerful, and essentially 'PERFECT' Border and, unless we get that, we are better off not making a Deal, even if that pushes our Country to temporarily 'close up' for a while, because it will end up closing anyway with the unsustainable Invasion that is currently taking place,” which he called “A DEATH WISH for the U.S.A.!...” 

Now, after insisting the border issue must be addressed and riling up their base to believe it is the biggest crisis the U.S. faces, MAGA Republicans are in the position of having to refuse to address the problem. So they are escalating their rhetoric, claiming that the bipartisan deal to address the border is not good enough. 

That dilemma is especially clear in Texas, where voters are very angry over reproductive rights in the face of Texas’s draconian laws, which have produced high-profile cases in which white suburban women—a key voting demographic—have been forced to leave the state to obtain abortions to protect their health. Texas governor Greg Abbott is also searching for a viable political issue since his signature policy, school vouchers, failed late last year. According to Patrick Svitek of the Texas Tribune, money has been pouring into the Texas primaries as Abbott and Texas attorney general Ken Paxton try “to unseat House Republicans who crossed them.” 

When the Supreme Court on Monday permitted the federal government to cut razor wire that was blocking federal agents from reaching parts of the border, including the crossing where three migrants died last week, MAGA Republicans urged Texas to “ignore” the ruling (although it came from a right-wing court), and Abbott launched a war of words against the federal government over management of the border. 

In a construction that appeared to echo Civil War–era declarations of secession, Abbott asserted Texas’s “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.”

Twenty-five Republican governors have issued a joint statement supporting “Texas’ constitutional right to self-defense.” Their statement accuses Biden of attacking Texas, using the right-wing talking points that the administration is "refusing to enforce immigration laws already on the books" and leaving the country "completely vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration pouring across the Southern border."

House speaker Johnson has also posted: “I stand with Governor Abbott. The House will do everything in its power to back him up. The next step: holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable.” (Johnson refers here to the impeachment effort against Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in which the Republicans wrote articles of impeachment before holding any hearings.) Trump called for “all willing States to deploy their [national] guards to Texas.”

But Paxton (whose trial on charges of securities fraud is set to start in April), asserted this right in court last September, and Abbott suggested today that his moves are part of an attempt to create a record for a court case challenging the long-standing precedent that the federal government, not the states, has jurisdiction over border issues. 

Observers worry that Texas’s stance is a modern version of the secession of the American South from the Union in the months before the Civil War, and perhaps in one way, it is. In the 1850s, elite southerners’ management of the South’s economy had thrown huge numbers of poor white southerners off their land and enabled a few men to amass huge wealth and power. As dispossessed white men became restive against the economic policies of human enslavement, southern lawmakers shored up their own slipping popularity by warning of the dangers of federal government meddling in their business. 

Here’s another way in which that era might inform our own. In the 1860s, southern leaders’ posturing took on a momentum of its own, propelling fire-eating southerners into a war. As MAGA Republicans are talking tonight about fighting the federal government and as Trump calls for “all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas,” I think of those elite southerners in 1861 for whom threatening war was all a rhetorical game. 

Meanwhile, Ukraine is running out of ammunition.

zeppelin cardoso  ,  a living and breathing mess of a human being , at least that's how i'd describe him , hand on heart . he truly thinks he means well but is constantly doing the complete opposite of what is well . he could be a very unpredictable person , simply because his emotions are seemingly impossibly to track and control . he hardly knows what's going on with himself half the time . zeppelin had always been the type of person that worked in extremes , in a sense . but dose those extremes with some unexpected flips and speed . he has a good heart but he just doesn't seem to use it right at any given moment . the type of person that wants someone to love him , to be around , to care but in the very next moment he wants nothing to do with any of it . he wants to be alone , he doesn't want to be loved and he doesn't want anyone to care . he could be a good friend to have in your corner . . . at times . . . other times , maybe he isn't the best person to trust with information . he's very haywire at any given moment but really . . . deep down , underneath all the issues . . . he just doesn't want to feel so isolated and alone .

born in edmonton , canada . zeppelin grew up in a relatively normal home . a mother that adored him and a father that wanted the best for him . like any family , they'd have their ups and downs throughout life but altogether , they were a normal and average family .

zeppelin's parents working in music in different ways . his father a lighting engineer for concerts and his mother working in sound . it was almost a match made in heaven when the two music lovers came together and have their little boy who they shamelessly named after classic rock group , led zeppelin .

growing up , zeppelin was always around music making it easy for him to pick it up . although , he was more interested in the work in the front . gravitating towards the guitar and piano .

a young zeppelin also got into different sports , soccer being the main one and for a kid with as much energy as zeppelin , his parents were glad to throw him into the extra circular .

( TW : MENTAL HEALTH. ) that being said , growing up zeppelin was a very hyper active kid . either that or his energy was at an all time low . some levels clearly off balance with the boy but as great as his parents were , it was easier to ignore some signs the boy was showing early on rather than trying to work on anything .

instead , they threw him into music or soccer . when zeppelin got older , he started to develop some issues with his mental health but yet again , it was looked over . zeppelin not really wanting to come to terms with it either . his family was normal . . . they were all so happy . . . he didn't want to be the one to ruin that . he didn't want to be the fuck up . even if his thoughts and opinions of himself were wrong , it didn't stop him from thinking it . ( TW CONCLUDED. )

when it was time for high school , zeppelin surprisingly got an offer into school in oregon for soccer . jumping on the chance , zeppelin left and so started the best and worst years of his life .

this is the part where i talk about how close zeppelin and chris were , how devastated he was by the disappearance . . . how the dares and the chaos that had happened to the class of 2014 . . . but that's not at all how it went for zeppelin .

zeppelin didn't really know chris . . . he knew of him . . . he knew what he looked like . he saw him around but they had never actually spoke to each other unless there was a simple hello or nod . the two barley interacted . that being said , it didn't take away from how erratic the male became after the vanishing of christopher wilder .

after everyone graduated , zeppelin unable to really process anything he was thinking or going through . he stayed in oregon and proceeded to try and cover everything up . why ? because he wasn't thinking straight and still isn't . . . even if he was , was it too late ? he was in too deep . the lies he had told . . . it was all too much .

nevertheless , now here zeppelin is , still in oregon while everyone is flooding back because of said message to the group . the horror story never seems to end for the male . dedicating his whole life to it . soccer was ancient history and his music was hardly anything other than something he did at some dive bars here and there . instead , his life was amounting to seemingly nothing but a guy losing his marbles . . . living a low profile life as a waiter . all potential his parents dreamed of him having seemingly thrown out the window .

Holiday Breakup (2016)

The only thing in this that was unpredictable was her mom talking about her parent’s sex life, though. Anyway…

Chloe (Manon Mathews) meets Jeff (Shawn Roe) on July 4th when she rear ends him on the way to her family get together. They flirt, she invites him to the fireworks, and they fall madly in love immediately. They start talking about moving in together, but cracks start forming in the whirlwind romance. On Halloween, they break up. But they don’t tell anyone right away, which seems weird to me because I think I immediately told everyone about every break up I’ve ever had. Their families (minus one or two people) are also very invested in their relationship, which also seems very weird. But since Jeff and Chloe are still on speaking terms (again, super weird to me- I needed space from my exes to process things), they both dread the holidays because they’ll be pitied for the recent break up and being single, so they decide to pretend to be together in front of their families.

There are definitely some bumps and bruises to the pretend relationship as well because Jeff’s dad Clark (Matt Reidy) is a total dick, and Kelly (Katie Leclerc) is overly suspicious of their relationship, especially after she gets dumped. Also who is Kelly to Chloe? Why was she at the family functions? She’s not a sister because Chloe’s sister is Mandy (Jennifer Aspen), who is miserable in her marriage to Randy (Jason Nash). But since they’re not trying to put their best foot forward anymore, Chloe and Jeff do actually get to know each other better and are more honest with each other.

Predictable? Yes. I think they tried to make it interesting by having the woman be too immature and the man be too mature, but it wasn’t interesting because men do in fact take themselves too seriously and women do in fact subconsciously try to be cute to the point of it being a hindrance. But the acting and production were all good, so if you’re looking for something easy to watch, this is it. I’ll give it 2 stars.

so planned parenthood put out a statement about roe v wade being overturned and dozens upon dozens of celebrities who are supporting were listed including kendall jenner, phoebe bridgers, paul mescal, selena gomez, madison beer, olivia rodrigo, joey king, dylan obrien, mistki, ariana grande, billie eilish, demi lovato, hailey bieber, miley cyrus, madelyn cline, shawn mendes, wallows… LITERALLY ANYONE YOU CAN IMAGINE. name them and they’re on there. not just a-list celebs but d-list and c-list as well. of course not everyone is on there which is understandable. gotta remember there are people actually work. lol.

but since olivia cockburn is so girlboss, feminist… why isn’t her name on there? if anything, i expected her name to be on there… has she even made an effort besides her little ig stories? she made max. 10 ig stories about it like the women’s activist she believes she is but why not engage in these organizations like these other celebrities (who are far busier with ACTUAL work? juggling multiple projects at a time i mean billie??? ariana??? olivia fucking rodrigo??? madelyn cline who is literally filming a whole tv show right now??? are on there lol ????)

it’s just so odd to see her skipping around europe with (pr stunt or not) boyfriend and seeing her blatantly ignoring this situation that most definitely affects her lol. unless she thinks her skin color protects her from old white men wanting to control a woman’s body… and that boyfriend who we all know and love - also does the bare fucking minimum. and yeah im calling him out too. harries ate up that single post he made and think he’s doing more than what actual activists are doing.

I hate to say it but I agree, specifically about Harry. I suppose it's an interesting issue though since this is mainly a US thing with Roe v Wade possibly getting overturned and Harry isn't a citizen. I already criticized him for sponsoring Biden. But this is slightly different. All he posted was the same thing Pauli did (I also did as well). I appreciated that. But I agree there's room for more.

Not to compare, but take 5SOS for example. They posted today about pro-choice rallies across the US. One was happening right up the road from me and because of them I was able to stop by for a little bit. Now imagine if someone who has 43 million instagram followers posted that info.

Harry doesn't have to say anything. But he'd have a lot of power if he did. I think his fans give him too much credit in places where it's not applicable.

Olivia is a fake feminist who is more concerned with fame, money, and attention than she is with anything else. She also was raised with wealth and privilege so she knows nothing of the problems that people outside of her socioeconomic background face. Moreover, I don’t think she cares.

Harry has never really taken a major stance on anything and will just do an obligatory post or statement. I don’t think he doesn’t care but he’s just not putting himself out there for any particular cause. That’s pretty much his approach to everything…be ambiguous enough that there’s something for everyone.

Personally, I don’t care, though. I’ve never been particularly interested about what celebrities think about politics or current events. Even if I like them. They are celebrities so they really have no idea what life is like for regular people and how certain issues affect our lives. So, in my opinion, their opinions are pretty much meaningless.
