Aix-la-Chapelle Cathedral, Aachen, Germany

I. I chose this particular cathedral because of its beauty and significance. I have been to Aix-la-Chapelle twice now and its intricacy and eternal beauty never cease to blow me away. I love the details on the ceiling and the beautiful stained glass windows in the back half of the cathedral. Also, it's interesting that the construction of this cathedral spaned over 1,000 years! Not to mention the significance of King Charlemagne's reign on Western Europe.

II. Regarding Charles the Great's significance, he played a major role in the Reformation. For starters, he strengthened the church's hierarchical structure by inserting himself into it. He blurred the lines between church and state by implementing requirements for higher clergy education and expected moral excellence. In sum, He helped shape pre-Sheism Catholicism. It is said that Charlemagne united most of Europe in the name of Christianity and restored the Western Roman Empire. Furthering these ramifications, Charlemagne and his descendants are ancestors of French and German emperors/kings.

III. Photos of the external and internal aspects of the cathedral are seen above.

IV. One element that surprised me about the Aix-la-Chapelle was the meaning of its name. Originally Aachen, Germany was put on the map because of its hot springs. Therefore, when the Cathedral was built it was named Chapel by the water. Another fact that surprised me was the construction lifespan of the cathedral (1,000 as seen above). Additionally, some of the decorations and furniture were likely removed by Napolean during his reign, so they may not have been returned to the chapel or if they were, the items may be in different spots. It's interesting to consider the fight between war and art throughout history.
