This time it's Beelzebub's turn to pick their rendezvous spot with the Archangel and they've come up with something truly demonic: a "couple's" spa day.

He doesn't know where to turn and Upstairs is holding out on everyone. Humanity is causing issues, workers are dropping like flies, swords are being sharpened, and the whole of Heaven seems to be rolling towards a catastrophe - but everything will be okay. He's on the winning side after all. Right?

Movies featuring men in lead roles still outnumber those with women, but a new study from Creative Artists Agency and the digital strategy company Shift7 reveals that’s not exactly good for business. The study found that top movies from 2014 to 2017 starring women in lead roles outperformed those starring men, regardless of budget. The data also found films that passed the Bechdel test, meaning two women characters had a conversation about something other than a man, outperformed those that didn’t.

According to findings from the Creative Artists Agency and shift7, a company started by the former United States chief technology officer Megan Smith, the top movies from 2014 to 2017 starring women earned more than male-led films, whether they were made for less than $10 million or for $100 million or more.

The research also found that films that passed the Bechdel test — which measures whether two female characters have a conversation about something other than a man — outperformed those that flunked it.

“The perception that it’s not good business to have female leads is not true,” said Christy Haubegger, a C.A.A. agent who was part of the research team. “They’re a marketing asset.”

Selon une étude du Creative Artists Agency + shift7, les films mettant en avant des personnages féminins obtiennent de meilleurs résultats financier que des longs-métrages avec des personnages masculins.

Superman n'a qu'à bien se tenir. Selon une étude menée par Creative Artists Agency + shift7, il est prouvé que les films qui mettent en avant des personnages féminins remportent plus de succès qu'un long-métrage avec des personnages masculins.

Sur 350 films analysés (sortis entre 2014 et 2017), on remarque que les plus gros succès au box-office étaient des longs-métrages qui mettaient en avant des héroïnes : Wonder Woman, Vaiana, ou bien encore La Belle et la bête, ont ainsi mieux fonctionné que des films portés sur une intrigue masculine. Les 105 films menés par des femmes ont amassé plus d'argent que les 245 films portés par des hommes.

Peu importe le coût de la production : que le film bénéficie d'un budget conséquent ou non, l'étude démontre que le constat reste inchangé. En moyenne, la recette d'un film avec une héroïne est de 586 millions de dollars contre 514 millions pour des longs-métrages avec un homme.

Le Bechdel Test, un critère important pour réussir

L'étude démontre également que tous les films qui ont réussi le test du Bechdel [si deux personnages féminins sont identifiables, parlent ensemble et autre chose que d'un homme, ndlr], connaissent un succès plus important dans les salles de cinéma.

En témoignent les chiffres : les films ayant respecté cette règle ont amassé plus 618 millions de dollars de recettes dans le monde (en moyenne), contre 413 millions pour celles qui ne l'ont pas suivi. Nul doute qu'avec l'arrivée de Captain Marvel mars prochain, les studios Disney et Marvel prendront acte de cette étude.
