Hi, this isn't a question but I just want to say thank you for creating this. Matlab is such an flaming piece of shit I hate it with my whole heart. Reading this gives me on-the-fly therapy while my soul is bleeding over my Matlab assignments that could be better done in literally any other language. It is so infuriating I want to throw a pee-filled balloon at Mathworks for every minute I spend using this sorry sack of chaos. Why is it the way that it is I'm so pissed
mood
(one of the OG mods here, if it makes you feel any better it's been way too many years since we were going through it and as far as I know all of us still agree with you)

(fall semester’s over so this is probably fine to post now)
OG mod squad here, we’re long gone but it sounds like the class is still the same. Our condolences.

A friend just discovered that MATLAB’s default date string is formatted “01-Jan-2015′.

How’s this for a twist ending?
Surprise, our capstone design project actually worked!* Bigger surprise - my MATLAB code actually worked! perfectly reasonable-looking graphs, first try. Wat. No way could I have actually learned something in the last 3 years... * only in silico, because who would want your design class to involve actually building something? fyi, this would totally take at least 20 years to make in real life >.< but hey, it's not like they asked up to propose a *feasible* project...
[Another mod here: all three of us landed in different groups for this class so potentially more Shit Getting Fucked in the near future. Final project due in 10 days.]

I will go through the depths of hell to change the disappointing fact that in matlab, the index starts at 1.
We appreciate the thought, but I at least am pretty sure we're already there and it hasn't seemed to help. Also we're not going through so much as getting really stuck, so there's that.

That awkward moment
When you realize that doing something in MATLAB-in-Python is magnitudes easier and less likely to kick your ass than doing the same thing in straight MATLAB.
See this? Flawless victory in one try. It took less than ten minutes.
Why.

Update from grad school: if you thought graduating meant we were safe, you thought wrong.

We have an exam tomorrow.
We're studying like crazy people, and after chewing through all the old exam problems we decided we needed Oreos. Specifically, chocolate double stuf Oreos. It transpires that with sufficient hauling of ass, one can make a 0.75 mile round trip across campus complete with cookie purchase and two traffic lights in 8 minutes and 7 seconds. This includes nearly bowling over several groups of sleepy people in the hallways, far too much hysterical laughter and horribly confusing the cashier - in order to minimize purchase time, the first person in the door made a beeline for the Oreos while the second ran to the counter and prepared to pay as soon as the cookies were brought up so the run back could begin.
The four of us then proceeded to eat the entire package in less than 20 minutes. The only thing that can really be said here is that it's still not as bad as the time we were sitting here fighting MATLAB and eating cookie dough raw from the package at 3 AM.

Yes matlab, that is exactly what I wanted you to do. /s
Honestly, the surprizing thing here should be that matlab had the courtesy to round the numbers as it silently casted them to uint8-- given the other tomfoolery going on here I'm amazed that it didn't just decide to truncate out the bits that didn't fit.

Hi everyone, I’m pleased to report that for the final time the whole squad has passed the relevant classes. I say final because we will be graduating in a few days.
This is going to be a bit of a turning point for the blog - it was created as a byproduct of our struggles with a bioengineering degree that throws its victims headlong into ODE hell with no prior MATLAB knowledge and lacks the grace to admit this was a bad idea or even to stop moving the goalposts to better smack people with MATLAB way out of their league. (Statistical analysis on crippled data sets! Image processing! VIDEO PROCESSING!)
But while we’re almost certain to keep failing at MATLAB wherever we go next, we would kind of like for shitMATLABdoes to stay true to its origins. Therefore we’ll be passing the torch to some of our younger friends so the show can go on.
It’s been a good run, for some definition of good. May your arrays be properly indexed and your graphs make sense.

Updates from grad school: and then I was a TA. This was supposed to be a sine wave. It is not a sine wave. (Resolution: sample rate fuckery and scaling all the values by a value obtained through trial and error)
Whatever face I made when I saw this on their screens, it was enough to scare the undergrads.
