Massive Endorsement : Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Says Uddhav Thackeray Victim Of Betrayal And One Who Betrays Not A Hindu
Tumblr media
In statement that is bound to rattle the incumbent Mahayuti government in Maharashtra , Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth in Uttarakhand, who turned down the invitation to the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, said Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray is a victim of betrayal.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his blessings when they met at the Shubh Ashirwad’ ceremony of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Mumbai , the Shankaracharya said he is Modi’s well-wisher.
“Yes, PM Modi came to me and did a pranaam. It is our rule that we will bless whoever comes to us. Narendra Modiji is not our enemy. We are his well-wishers and always speak for his welfare. If he makes a mistake, we also point that out to him. He is not our enemy,” he said.
“Uddhav Thackeray has been betrayed and many people are anguished by it. I met him today as per his request and told him that people’s pain won’t subside till he becomes the chief minister again,” he told reporters after meeting Thackeray at the latter’s residence Matoshree in Bandra.
He (Uddhav) said he will do whatever was needed as per our blessings, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati said.
“Betrayal is the biggest sin, he said, adding, “The one who betrays can’t be a Hindu. The one who tolerates betrayal is a Hindu. The entire populace of Maharashtra is anguished by the betrayal and this was reflected in the recent (Lok Sabha) elections,” he said.
“We don’t have anything to do with politics, but we are talking about betrayal which is a sin as per religion,” he added.
Uddhav Thackeray had to resign as Maharashtra chief minister in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde rebelled, walking out with a majority of the Shiv Sena MLAs with him to become the CM by forming the government in alliance with the BJP.
The Shankaracharya also attended a puja ceremony at Matoshree bungalow.

Durga - The Women of Bengal
Tumblr media
The conversation on sensuality drifted to a decade old Wild Stone deodorant ad. A steamy portrayal of a saree clad woman, in traditional finery, prepping for pujo bumps into a young man. Her imagination paints a sensational, passionate and visibly satiating encounter. While the later cuts were censored on our TV screens, the sex appeal lingered on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With plenty such characterisations and beyond, what’s with women of Bengal that they often come across as free spirited, free-willed and liberated? Even if marginally more than women from other parts of the country. At the outset is a disclaimer: this may be a generalisation. Also, lopsided gender roles exist here as well.
One lens to decode culture is beliefs and mythology. Histories, languages and rituals intertwine around and shape our collective cultures. Massive Durga bhakti is evident, but what more can she tell us to make sense of our understanding?
Stemming from the reverence of Earth, fertility and the womb – the feminine divine/Nature has had a fickle equation across societies. Later sidelined in many of them, she’s largely relegated as the ‘mother’ in others. Shakti in Indian mythology, though has had fascinating stories, circumventing the trinity of Bhrama-Vishnu-Mahesh.
Tumblr media
Associated with the three of them in her several forms and roops, the primal Goddess is most closely tied with Shiva. Sati, an avatar of Adi Parashakti (original supreme feminine divine) despite her father Daksha’s wishes married Shiva. The father-king not very fond of his naked hermit son-in-law, skipped Sati and Shiva’s name from an invitation list for a yagna at his place. Obstinate Sati had her way and reached the yanga. Following an altercation with her father upon her husband’s dishonour, Sati immolates herself. A furious Shiva is on a destruction spree as he carries his wife’s corpse and performs the tandav. In order to stop him from the pillage Vishnu shoots his Sudarshan Chakra and Sati’s body scatters in 51 pieces. Wherever they fell, the places became potent with energy. These are the 51 Shakti Peeths – the supreme seats of the Devi.
While most states of India may have two, three or four Shakti Peeths, Bengal has an astounding eleven and Bangladesh, six. The sheer density of these along with those of the neighbouring Assam and Orissa makes for a compelling reason to dig deeper – that could have moulded belief systems of Bengali women and men.
Tumblr media
In contrast to the Shakti story of the headstrong Sati setting herself ablaze, is Ramayana’s docile Sita; who was decreed to agnipareeksha to prove her chastity. Popular deity in northern India, she models an ideal wife along with her maryada-purushottam husband.
As the prime Goddess, Shakti is the wife of Shiva in her many forms. After Sati (from the Vedic age), Shakti takes birth as Parvati (in the post Buddhist Puranic literature) who resolves to marry Shiva (the persistence quite a contrast to the day’s popular media love-chase). The idea is to transform the hermit to a householder. Vedic importance of yagna and fire gives way to Puranic puja and water – Parvati makes Shiva to break the flow of Ganga – she rejuvenates Shiva and the world. Her nudging transforms Shiva into Nataraj, their conversations are the source of all wisdom – stories, sensory pleasures and esoteric Tantras. [1]
Hence, the ritualistic form of worship, that cares not much for abstinence traces Shaivism and Shaktism. Several Shiv and Shakti temples have liquor as prashad, meat is prepared as an offering, animal sacrifice isn’t unknown. Tantra texts also hold the view of the world blooming from the union of Shakti and Shiva thereby celebrating Kama (love-making and the God of love). Marking the passion of Shakti and Shiva as the creation source of all life and death, several temples adorn explicit sculptures and art – a belief that all that is, is before the eyes of the divine. Therefore, perhaps the underlying essence of these rituals find stronger relevance to the believers of Shakti and Shiva – acknowledging all aspects of nature valid, contrary to Bhrama’s sense of ‘purity’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tracking tales from the temples
In Guwahati – the Kamakhya temple is where Sati’s yoni and garbh (vagina and the womb) fell. Understandably, one of the mightiest Shakti Peeths. The goddess of desire and fertility, Kamakhya literally means the conscious awareness of love (Kama ~ love/lust + aakhya ~ consciousness/wisdom). Lore has it, this was an amorous hideout for Sati and Shiva. Childless couples throng the temple offering the goddess animal sacrifices and red hibiscus flowers. In the month of June, the mighty Bhramaputra turns red for three days which as believers have it is when the Goddess menstruates. The actual reason could be the cinnabar deposits on the hill where the temple stands. The powerful goddess has been worshipped since time immemorial as a gramdevi (village goddess) before being included in the Hindu pantheon as Shaivism expanded in the region that is today Assam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shakti’s stronghold is Bengal. While Amba, Rukmani, Meenakshi and other roops of the Goddess are worshipped in other regions, she’s often worshipped there along with more popular Gods – Vishnu or Shiva or their forms. Punjab and Jammu have Shakti following in the form of Sherawali Maa or Vaishno Devi, though her manifestation is starkly benign, a smiling mother – possibly a gramdevi adapted to the imagery of Durga. One of the reasons could be the perpetual invasions, interaction and intermingling of cultures in the region of Punjab that the earlier versions of the goddess may have waned.
Tumblr media
Durga is all encompassing, an amalgamation of the powers of Bhrama Vishnu Mahesh – the prime Shakti, risen to end evil. Mahishasura – a buffalo-human devil had a boon that no man or animal could kill him and hence the fearless Durga manifested, Durg translates to a fort or invincible.
Resounding stories of her valour are celebrated throughout pujo, the biggest festival for Bengalis. Durga here is a daughter, visiting her maiden home on Earth and hence celebrations must know no bounds. There is no sanction on alcohol or meat or fish – which otherwise are impure during prayers to other deities.
Iconography of Durga distincts itself from the mother-goddess worshipped elsewhere. Her autonomy with her ferocious lion/tiger vaahan is more dynamic here and she’s not simply seated. Strikingly away from other goddesses, her hair is loose and free-flowing – unrestrained. Remember Draupadi – who’s veritable woe was her being dragged into the court with her hair untied – a great dishonour. The inherent belief that women’s hair should be tied in place – which is traditionally desirable, Durga demonstrates women to be, untied, unrestrained and untamed.
Sringaar, dear to the goddess explains the deep kohled eyes, bigger bindis, and sindoor. Sindoor khela during pujo celebrations is where women smear it on each others’ faces is distinct to the region. Chemically, sindoor is made of turmeric, lime and cinnabar (mercury). Physiologically it is believed to keep one’s blood pressure in check and enhance one’s sexual appetite. While this attempts to explain its fertile importance to married women across India, the festivity of it in Bengal perhaps sets the tone apart to the celebration of female energy of Durga.
The untied hair and the bridal finery keep Durga at the cusp of free-willed Nature (essence of Shakti) and rule-led culture. [2]
Tumblr media
While Durga is worshipped in pandaals through the nine day festival, it is really Kali who is worhsipped in temples across Bengal. One of the other more proiminent Shakti Peeths is Kalighat in Kolkata. Kali is one of the das mahavidyaas (ten great wisdoms) of the goddess. Her story is about a demon called Raktabij who cloned himself with every drop of his blood that fell down. Kali was summoned to tackle him and she does, she drinks his blood till the last drop as he drops dead.
Tumblr media
Kali is the feminine of Kaal (Shiva) which means time and death. She is Nature, which existed before culture took birth, and will be beyond culture. Her depiction as dark coloured goddess grew along with the idea of the infinite being mysterious. She consumes all life and is fierce. Her imagery conveys the decapitation of ego in the form of Raktabij’s head that she holds. The human hands that adorn her waist is the killing of rage, while her voluptuous breats are sexual and nurturance. The nosering is conspicuously absent – a traditional marker of domesticity. Her hair is matted and unfettered. Her nakedness connotes carnality, purity and nature in its raw form. The tongue sticking out is the distinct iconography of Kali.
Certain Shakta literature narrate how Kali not only steps on her husband Shiva, but nudges him to make love to her. Nature nudging man to acknowledge, care and pay attention to the other, including nature. Shiva and Shankti stories have how sages bump into them making love which is why the sages decreed Shiva to be worshipped only as a ling. One version says how Shakti is embarassed and she covers her face with a lotus flower. The version gave rise to Lajja-Gauri; the other is where Shakti sticks her tongue out daring the sages’ disapproval, or deriding them for they are judging nature. Kali’s tongue that mocks the finiteness of human gaze changed meaning through centuries and during the colonial era become more ‘sanitised’ as per Victorian moralities. [3]
The now popular story (evolving through 18th-19th century) is about shame of having stepped upon her husband Shiva who lies beneath her so as to stop her from her devastating frenzy. The other is really lust for more to destroy – blood from the animal sacrifice is at some temples, smeared on her tongue.
Tumblr media
Contrast the Devi with her more motherly roles being worshipped in other regions. Her other raudra roops that depict her sovereignty and true to nature forms such as the blood drinking Chinnamasta upon a copulating Ratti and Kama have largely been sidelined in their native regions such as the Himachal. Between Vishnu, Shiva and his sons, and their popular avatars or forms, the feminine is mostly rolled into the dutiful Sita, gentle Gauri, her avatar as the royal warrior Meenakshi marrying Shiva, or the chanchal Lakshmi who is either by the side of Ganesh or that of Narayana. Saraswati has her set of niche worshippers. Radha emerged only in 13th century Bengal and Orissa and eventually becoming popular in the Hindi speaking northern states. Yet her more emancipated, Nature/Kali-alluding, clandestine, night-time forest fantasies have somehow been veiled just as her head-covered portrayals through the medieval ages.
If our stories and mythologies shape our cultures, the immense popularity of, and devotion to Kali and Durga forms the belief system of Bengali men and women. We do idolise our idols.
[Another lens to look at why perhaps the women of Bengal are relatively more free-willed, is the region’s captivating modern history, the rise of reformers and early Indian feminist thinkers/writers through Bengali renaissance. Does their genesis too lie in Durga? Stay tuned for part 2.]

Brahma, The Prajapati
Brahma is an interesting diety. He is old; (both in iconographically and historically). Brahma is majorly a god who emerges with this very name - "Brahma"; in the Puranas. Older texts; such as the Vedas talk about the "Prajapati". Prajapati many believe is a Vedic name for Brahma but in fact; it was a title. This title- Prajapati, meaning  'Lord of People'; was associated not only with Brahma; but his many sons- Bhrigu, Pulatsya, Pulaha, Kratu, Atri, Marichi, etc. Simplistically speaking Prajapati meant the Populator or great ancestor. This idea carried on with the deity Brahma; as he was christened "Jagatpita" (World Father).
One other Vedic title was Virinchi; translated by western Sanskrit scholars as "the creator"; although it is closer to "the maker". Many other qualitative names are also mentioned in the Brahma Purana and the Skand Purana-  Vaigasi (the speaker), Vedanath (master of Vedas), Swayambhu (self-born), Padmabhu (lotus born), Chatur Mukh (Four Mouthed) and Hiranyagarbhaya (one who is of the golden womb). All these titles feature in the different Gayatri Mantras for Brahma.
Brahma’s form comprises of four head (complete awareness of the outside; but not of the inside). He carries a Veda, Kamandala, Chamhs, and the Lotus in his four hands.
Veda symbolizes knowledge; Brahma is the god of knowledge. Lotus is the representative of the "Maya" (material existence)- Brahma is the maker of all Maya. The Kamandal (Sacrificial water pot) and Chamhs (Ritual Spoon) symbolize him as the god of Yagya.
Now let us discuss Yagya. Yagya means to barter. It is an ancient Indian concept; that belives that the entire world is an exchange. You reading this right now- it is an exchange of knowledge. Respiration is an exchange, Excretion is an exchange. Death is an exchange, Birth is an exchange. Commerce is an exchange, reading, writing, speaking, eating, breathing, learning and teaching is all an act of exchange. This school of thought would later become integral in the Mim-Asa school of Sanatan Philosophy. The pinnacle of this exchange philosophy was the ritual of Yagna. In this ritual, a desirous person (Yajman) would offer items and sacrifices to a deity (Dev) and the deity would grant him what he (rarely she) desired. This was the Greatest act of exchange – the exchange between the worshipper and the worshipped, the seeker and the sought-after, the giver and the taker. ( The modern Havan is a mini-yagna)
Brahma is the only deity associated with this practice- He is both the god of Yagna Philosophy and the so-named Yagna ritual.
The common misconception is that Brahma is the creator of the Universe in the Sanatan Hindu Mythology. He is not. The Sanatan philosophy believes that the universe is just that- Sanatan. It is uncreated and undestroyed. The actual difference is; sometimes its observed; other times there is no one to do so. When Narayan sleeps, the universe exists- but no one sees it. Similarly, when Shiv is Mahayogi- his eyes are closed- the universe is non-existent from his perspective; but when the Devi coaxes him to open his eyes; he becomes Shankar, and the world then exists and he experiences it. The idea that Brahma is the creator is a western British construct; as they never bothered to look into the deeper metaphysics of Sanatan philosophy. Brahma is not the creator, but the populator.
For example, let us say there is an isolated house where no one lives. That house is as good as non-existing. Now one day a man comes and starts living there; he marries, establishes a family and so his descendants occupy the house. It is now with this, that the house has truly begun to exist. So the world (Sristi) always existed, but it was empty; so as good as non-existent. But then came Brahma (There are two origin stories- one, he begat from Narayan's Navel. Two, he came out of a self-created golden egg or Hiranyagarbha). When Brahma came; he had many sons, daughters, grandsons, grand-daughters, and so on. So Brahma did not create the world, but it was he who first occupied and experienced it. All creatures that experience Maya (Human, Rakshasa, Yaksha, Sur, Asur, Naga, Garuda, Reech, Kinnar, etc.) are his descendants. Therefore Brahma; not the creator directly- but the first observer or occupant and Populator of an empty world.
Another Aspect is the worship of Brahma; or the lack thereof. There are many stories to explain this in the Puranas. But the basic template goes like this:- 'Brahma uses his imagination to create something. He does something inappropriate with it; like replace his wife or tries to chase his daughter. Then a divine being (Shiv, Savitri, Saraswati, Gayatri, Manu, Bhrigu, Devi-Shatrupa) curses him to not be worshipped; as a punishment.'
To understand this concept of Brahma being un-worshipped; one must contrast him to both Narayan and Sadashiv. Narayan and Sadashiv are two beings who represent two different paths to the ultimate truth; (one can also argue that there is one path- of Harihara; an amalgamation of both Hari/Narayan and Hara/Rudra).
Brahma; is the maker of the material existence. It is he who begets the form- form of wealth, learning, trees, planets, food, sexuality, etc; through the process of Yagna (Exchange). He creates the material form; Maya and in exchange, he tries to control it. He tries to enslave and subdue this Maya, this tangible form. He wants to amuse himself and pride himself on the fact that it is he- Only He; who created the material world of Maya, through yagna; where he creates and the creation serves him as a slave.
Narayan and Sadashiv are both form-less. The images you see of Vishnu and Shiv are just representations. Vishnu is a tangible form of the intangible truth called Narayan and similarly, Shiv or Shankar, is a tangible form of the intangible truth called Sadashiv or Rudra. Brahma is un-enlightened; he is so obsessed by the Maya that he is trapped in his illusion (Brahm). Rudra, on the other hand, sees Maya as a source of suffering and desire (Much like Buddha). This formless truth called Sadashiv completely over-rules creation, he shuns it and seeks to find peace within. However, this Maya; or creation is an unimaginably powerful feminine force. It is Devi, the adi-param-shakti- the raw representation of all power- it is knowledge (Sharda), it is wealth (Shri), it is power (Shakti). She is Durga, The warrior-mother. She is Mahakali, the devourer of time. She is Tara, the occult mistress. She is Shodashi- the beautiful and it is she who is Dhumavati-the ugly. Devi is all form; she is the form of all creation and all creation is but a form of her. She is all the forms that humans see, She is Shatrupa.
Brahma chases this form. He chases this Devi, without understanding that it is his creation; something he made; Devi is his daughter. Rudra shuns it and despises it. However, he is ultimately forced to see this form. Even Shiv has to bow to the power of the feminine divine. When this male divine (Rudra), who sought peace within; combines with the female divine (Devi), that is the world outside- we get the "Ardhnareshwar", The true divine- it is both male and female, formed and form-less, east and west. It is all dualities of nature coming together into one singularity. But Brahma is not able to understand this and never seeks unity with the world- he does not want to merge into the Devi; he desires only to control it.
Narayan and Brahma are also an interesting comparison. First of all,  Narayan, unlike Sadashiv is open to Maya; not only that- he loves Maya. Maya, the material world is his consort. Unlike Shiv, who had to be forced by the Devi to open his eyes and embrace the creation; Narayan embraces, the creation and goes one step further. He marries creation itself and becomes "Mayapati", Lord of the Material World-Illusion. He participates in the world. He takes indulges in the acts of the Devi and is hence "Bhogapati", Lord of Indulgences. But unlike Brahma, who is just immersed in indulgence and seeks to control Devi (the source of all indulgence); Narayan uses indulgences to find greater meaning. He uses the Devi, not as a subordinate; but rather seeks to use her help; to find the ultimate truth. So Narayan becomes "Mokshapati", Lord of the Ultimate Truth, and Devi for him is a tool to help find this Moksha/Ultimate truth.
So, to recap; Shiv finds the ultimate moksha within him; shunning the outside world, Narayan finds moksha through the help of the outside world, that is the Devi- and Devi is herself an embodiment of the ultimate truth. Brahma, on the other hand, seeks out the outside world, like Narayan, and unlike Sadashiv; but is absorbed in his ambition to control it and subdue it.
Now let’s look at some history. During the Vedic Era, the yagna philosophy of exchange and the yagna ritual was extremely prevalent and popular. From education to politics, marriages, and death- everything was associated to the Yagna ritual and the connected philosophy. Due to this- Brahma and his Vedic form Prajapati were very popular and crucial. Prajapati was a part of nearly all large Yagna Rituals and was also supposed to be the god of the yagna ritual.
As the Upanishadic Era came about; the practice of Yagna rituals plummeted. Puja, Yog, and Bhakti became much more popular. Yagna was criticized, for being were large, ritualized, dogmatic, and extremely pompous. The ritual of yagna was abandoned in favor of yog and bhakti; and the philosophy of Yagna (world running on exchange); was heavily criticized by the new philosophies like- Vedanta, Sankhya, Nyaya, and Yoga. These new philosophical schools were much more appealing to the masses and yagna rituals and philosophy faded into a few small communities and their rituals.
With the collapse of Yagna hegemony over Philosophy and Worship; Brahma, the god of yagna, came to be viewed as an outdated god; whose worship and worshippers were out of touch to modern realities. Brahma and Yagna Practice were integrated; and so as yagna fell in popularity- Brahma's historical worship reduced and by the time of the Bhakti Movement; there was only one standing bastion of Brahma worship, that stands to this date- The Pushkar Temple of Lord Brahma. It is the world's only proper and historical Brahma Temple in the world today.
I would end this article, by saying that I enjoyed writing it and I hope you enjoyed reading it. Therefore:-

Actor Amrish Puri’s grandson Vardhan Puri himself is an actor, and made his debut with Yeh Saali Aashiqui.
When you are the grandson of one of the legendary actors of cinema, you are bound to feel the pressure as an actor yourself. But Vardhan Puri has handled it quite well, having delivered a good performance in his debut film Yeh Saali Aashiqui. What he cannot get out of his mind is the legacy that his grandfather left behind with his work. On his 88th birth anniversary, Vardhan tells us what plans they have in mind for today.
“We are very emotional. In fact, yesterday, our entire family video called each other, and we were discussing him — his glorious life, the amazing human being he was. My mom made his favorite kada prasad halwa, my sister came visiting with her husband. We also had some yummy pizzas, just the way he liked them,” he says.
Foodie is clearly one tag that can be attached to the veteran actor. Vardhan further reveals, “We will listen to his favourite KL Saigal, Kishore kumar, Mohammad Rafi songs, and watch all the scenes from his films which we love and are most memorable, such as Mr India (1987) and Vidhaata (1982).”
While the young actor was small when his grandfather passed away, he says that he himself did celebrate many birthdays together with his grandfather. Recalling his fond memories, Vardhan says, “He never liked to make a fuzz about his birthdays. We used to have family dinners, sit in his home theatre to watch classics together, like Hitchcock films, a Satyajit Ray or Kishore Kumar film. He would also wake up and do a special Shiv ji ki puja. After that, we all would go to them temple, pray, come back home and have a sweet dish. While my grandfather and my dad wouldn’t drink, they would pop the champagne and have a glass, breaking the rule just for that day. His favourite food would be maa choli ki daal, bhindi ki sabzi, fish curry and gajar ka halwa, with tandoori roti.”

Shivratri fasting rules you must be aware of - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/shivratri-fasting-rules-you-must-be-aware-of-times-of-india/
Shivratri fasting rules you must be aware of - Times of India
Tumblr media
Regular fasting on Shivratri will make the devotees enjoy princely life and comforts in the next life, a permanent place in Lord Shiva’s abode after death and liberation from the cycles of birth and death. The merits of Shivratri vrat are several times more than performing an Ashwamedha sacrifice.
SHIVRATRI FASTING RULES Starting the day
On Shivratri day, the devotee must wake up early in the morning and take holy bath in a sacred river. If this is not possible, then water boiled with some sesame seeds must be used for bathing to ward off the impurities. New clothes are worn and the devotee should visit the nearby Shiva temple.
Shiv Puja The devotee can sponsor a holy bath for Shiva Linga at the temple by offering milk, honey, fragrant materials, flowers, new clothes and other puja materials possible. It is highly auspicious to chant the divine names of Lord Shiva during the holy bath at the temple.
Offerings to Shiva on Shivratri Day Following the Shiv Puja, the devotee decorates the idol with turmeric paste (haldi), sandal paste (chandan), vermilion (kumkum), bilva leaves, flowers and new clothes. Camphor light is waved in front of the deity and arati songs are sung. The other offerings during the conclusion of the puja include burning incense sticks and ringing of the temple bells.
Shiv Puja during Shivratri While observing the fast, the devotees must do Shiv Puja on the night of Shivratri either at the home or temple. Shivratri puja is usually done once in every three hours. The whole of the night is divided thus into four parts and during each of the segments ritual bath and worship is offered to Shiva Linga.
Fasting rules of Shivratri that devotees must follow
The fasting on Shivratri starts at the dawn and continues over the day and night. The fasting must conclude only on the next day during the parana timing as suggested by the Panchang (calendar).
The fasting is doubly beneficial only with night long vigil during Shivratri. The vigil must be accompanied by Shiv Puja either at the home or temple. The strict form of fasting consists of abstaining from food, drinks and water. The milder form of fasting allows consuming milk, water and fruits.
The most important aspect of the fasting is abstaining from bad thoughts, bad company and bad words. The devotee must practice virtues and keep away from all evils.
Staying at the temple premises, chanting the names of Lord Shiva and listening to the glories of the Lord are the most beneficial activities advised for the devotees.
The essence of the fasting and vigil are achieving mastery over senses and learning to control desires. The pure state of mind achieved thus is diverted towards the Lord thereby purifying the individual’s body, mind and soul.
