crossing boundaries. (m) — PATREON EXCLUSIVE
Tumblr media
pairing: singledad!mark x afab!teacher!reader
words: 4.5k+
summary: teaching kindergarten isn’t so bad, especially when you get to see mark lee everyday.
genre: fluff, smut
warnings: breeding kink (!!), small mention of blood, fingering, pussy eating, bigdick!mark, spitting
this fic is exclusive to both tiers on my patreon, which you can access here! below is a tumblr preview
You check your attendance list right before class is set to begin when a clumsy voice speaks to your right.
“Sorry, I’m so sorry,” a young man murmurs when he strides in with a young girl in tow. She has her hair tied in messy pigtails and a sparkly pink backpack that compliments her light-up shoes. “Had a hard time getting out the door this morning.”
You smile politely, greeting the young girl and shaking the hand of who you presume to be her brother. He’s rather cute, with tousled black hair and wire-rimmed glasses. He’s dressed like he’s about to go play basketball in an oversized t-shirt and baggy shorts.
“No problem at all, we were about to start,” you say to him.
“Are you the new teacher?” He asks, blinking at you and running his hands through his hair.
“That would be me,” you chuckle. “It’s nice to meet you, Mr…”
“Lee,” he finishes. “Mark Lee. This is Jieun, my daughter.”
“Oh,” you say, surprised by the revelation. You suppose you should have expected there would be young parents in your class too, but you didn’t think you would encounter a father this young who’s close to your own age. You recover from your slip up, shaking your head as you smile at his daughter. “Well, we’re going to have a fun time today. I can assure you she’s safe in my hands.”
“Perfect! I mean, I have no doubt that she is. You seem, um, really trustworthy. Not that the last teacher wasn’t, but something tells me that you’re different. In a non-weird way.”
You laugh at him stumbling over his words. The tips of his ears redden before Mark prods his daughter forward.
“Go on with the nice lady, Jieun,” he murmurs, handing her a pink lunchbox. She’s all too eager to skip into the room and sit next to her group of friends. Mark scratches the back of his neck. “I’ll, um, I’ll come pick her up later. I mean, of course I will. I pick her up everyday.”
“Okay,” you giggle, nodding at him. “I’ll see you at the end of the day, Mr. Lee.”
Mark exits your classroom with a blush darkening his cheeks while you try your best not to linger on thoughts of how cute he is.
Your first day as a kindergarten teacher goes relatively well. The kids barely notice the difference when nap time rolls around per usual and you assist them with their alphabet worksheets in between. They’re all well behaved, only receiving a few troublemakers who fall back in line after a gentle scolding.
Before you know it, they’re drawing you pictures littered with rainbows and flowers and giving it to you with huge grins. You’re overwhelmed by their acceptance and it only solidifies your decision to take this job, although it cut your yearly salary in half and forced you to skimp on your weekly grocery runs.
Mark’s daughter is surprisingly the one who shines the most, excelling way beyond her grade level and reading full sentences when most of the other children are still sounding out words. She’s sweet to her classmates too, helping them when they’re struggling and sharing her animal crackers at lunch time.
You compliment Mark when he swings by to pick up Jieun. “She’s such a sweetheart. You and her mom raised her very well.”
“Jieun doesn’t have a mom,” he quickly says before stuttering. “I-I mean, of course she has a mom, everyone has a mom. Well, not everyone, but-”
“I get it, Mark,” you interrupt, attempting to hold back your bouts of laughter. You find it endearing that this man can’t formulate a coherent sentence around you when his daughter’s been completing academic cartwheels.
He chuckles to hide his embarrassment. “I mean to say that Jieun’s mom is no longer in the picture.”
“Sorry to hear that,” you say, knowing how difficult it must be to juggle life as a single parent.
He shrugs it off. “No big deal. It was a mutual separation.” Jieun’s tugging on the straps of her backpack as she finishes chatting with her friends, which provides you the opportunity to speak longer with Mark. “So you’ll be her teacher for the rest of the term?”
“Yes, for another four months. I know it’s a sudden change for the kids but I’m trying my best to make the transition as smooth as possible for them. Did you have a good relationship with my predecessor?”
He’s emboldened for the first time, and it’s your turn to act shy when he replies, “She was okay. Not as pretty as you.”
Jieun luckily saves you from crossing the line any further, rushing to tug him away and relay her events of the day. You wave them goodbye, struggling to swallow the lump lodged in your throat as you speak to the other parents.
Mark Lee is definitely going to be a problem for you.

dad!bts series | a serendipitous life
Tumblr media
The sun feels warm against your skin as you lay underneath a large tree, comforting you as a cool breeze brushes through the leaves.
Your eyes are closed, contentment resting on your face. Jovial chatters of your husband and toddler fill the air from a distance as they collect flowers. You chuckle at yourself, knowing full well that Huimang is handing barely sprouted dandelions to Hoseok who pockets them before his palm is too full.
“Mama!” The rasp of your son’s voice catches your ears, springing your head up in response. He stumbles forward as quickly as his feet allow him to while Hoseok strides behind him with a toothy smile. You watch the dandelion between Huimang’s tiny fingers fly away with the afternoon breeze before he can reach you.
“Mama,” he says breathily, “Oh!”
Your husband giggles with you as your son inspects the now bare stem, wondering where the tufts of white fluff have gone. You brush Huimang’s hair out of his face to see his eyes better, “the wind caught it!”
His cheeks are bright pink, and his eyes are confused as he looks around. Hoseok softly pinches Huimang’s cheek. “We can find more later, baby.” He chuckles.
Huimang pouts for a moment, looking to you for reassurance; with a soft laugh and tug at your heart, you soothe his sorrow: “You worked hard, baby. We’ll get another.”
He sighs, dropping the stem before plopping himself into your lap.
You grunt at the pressure against your tummy, repositioning yourself before relaxing back against your husband, who has taken a seat behind you and is holding you in his arms.
In an undertone, you whisper to Hoseok, “Baby moves every time Huimang comes near.” You take his hand and place it against your small bump. He is awed at the feeling of gentle pads against your belly, “she’ll be active,” he suggests, “someone to keep up with this one.”
You roll your eyes laughing softly, “You are so sure the baby is a girl.”
Hoseok shrugs, a thin smile splayed across his lips, “just imagine, Huimang with a little sister.”
“We still need to tell him,” you start, both of you looking down at your son who’s taken to a small pile of leaves, making some sort of fort out of them.
“Huimang-ah,” your husband’s tone is careful but nothing short of love, “can you look at mama and papa?”
Dutifully, your toddler turns in your lap, sparkling eyes now looking up at you. You wonder how your husband will start, how he’ll explain something so intricate in a way that will make sense to such a young, impressionable mind. The thoughts ruminating move you to caress the soft skin of your son’s cheek, the pinkness of face making him look like the angel you are certain he is. He starts to play with your fingers when Hoseok starts.
“Do you know what a baby is, Huimang?” He asks.
Huimang’s bottom lip pops out, head cocked to one side as you watch the wheels turn in his head. You smile, eyes prickling with tears because this little human is yours.
He stews in thought for a moment, interlocking his fingers with yours before continuing, “like baby Jieun-ah!”
Your husband is beside himself, giggling, “smart boy,” he elates, “yes, just like baby Jieun.”
“Remember when Uncle Yoonie and Aunt Kitty brought her over for the first time?” You add.
He nods, “I love Jieun-ah…” He stops and sighs dramatically, “she cries SO much.” His eyes are round like saucers when he looks between the both of you .
“What do you feel when she cries?” You cut in with a chuckle, feeling the silky strands of Huimang’s hair against your fingers.
“Mmm-“ he taps his lips with his pointer finger, “sad.”
Hoseok laments, “Huimang-ah, you feel sad for her?” Huimang nods, a crease forming on his brow when he looks up at his dad.
You smile and your son sighs, “I just want her to be always happy mama, like sh-she makes me happy.”
“Your cousins make you happy, huh baby?” Hoseok grabs Huimang’s hand and gives it a light squeeze.
“Mm-hm,” Huimang nods with certainty, “I love ALL of them.” His eyes avert to your stomach where a fallen leaf has rested. He reaches for it but stops when movement catches his eye.
You bite your lip trying to mask your laughter. Hoseok reaches around and rubs the area on your stomach causing the baby to respond once more, “It’s okay angel, did that scare you?”
He nods precariously, watching the soft strokes Hoseok leaves across your belly; “can you give papa your hand?”
Huimang looks concerned but places his hand in the palm of your husband’s. A memory floods your mind as you remember the first time you saw your newborn’s tiny hand rest inside your husband’s. A feeling you’ve only felt since becoming a mother takes over your body, chills descending your bare arms. Love in the shape of your child.
Huimang’s squeal brings you back to reality, you look down and his hand is gently pressed against the area the baby is now kicking over and over. Hoseok giggles.
“What is that?” Huimang is taken aback. In awe, in fear? You aren’t sure yet.
“That’s a baby.”
Huimang gasps, mouth round with surprise when he looks up at the two of you, “baby?”
You nod, searching his eyes for a tangible emotion, all the while your husband keeps his hand over Huimang’s.
Your son starts to move his fingers, flinching when the baby responds. The two of you watch as he gains confidence, seemingly interacting with each kick or soft jab from the baby.
You moan softly in response to the slight discomfort, “What are you thinking baby?”
Huimang’s touch is innately careful as he scopes the movement, wonder sparkles in his eyes as a small smile ticks the corner of his mouth.
“Is this like when Dae got Jieun-ah?”
You feel the vibration of Hoseok’s tender giggle bellow out, “when he became a big brother.”
Huimang gasps again, starry eyes torn away from the love inside your belly, “this is my Jieun-ah?” His raspy voice calls out with excitement. You reach forward and take your son’s face between your hands, exploding with happiness as you kiss both cheeks, “you’re going to be a big brother, my angel.”
Huimang laughs as your kisses cover his chin and neck, his arms wrapping around yours.
Hoseok leans down, kissing the top of his son’s head, tears lining his eyes. While Huimang celebrates, you take a few seconds for you and your husband to bask in the joy, peppering soft kisses against his lips.
“You think he’ll be upset if baby isn’t a little sister?” You joke.

The girls did not promote this song on music shows etc, instead they promoted it through different versions of it, for example, the official music video, a recording version, a live version, and an acapella version on their official platforms.

The era styling was SO GOOD, despite not being promoted on award shows the girls styling in the music video was STUNNING!
Despite being describe as 'PetalPond trying to make a quick buck' this was generally a very fun release from the girls.
In fans perspective the funniest part of this comeback was stellas contributions to the lyrics, 'I don't see you when your sleeping, cause its creepy'
the live and acapella version of the song is definitely the fan favourite version of this song.
the girls spent a lot of time vlogging and filming on variety shows around the time of the release of this song.
EVERYONES fav part of this release was Jieuns breath taking visual showcase, in her teaser, STUNNING.
The girls also covered popular English holiday songs in this time, jingle bell rock, snowman, last Christmas, and so many more.
Only Stella (for her one line^) was credited for lyrics.
Soomin commented how she didnt feel very attached to this song because she didnt grow up celebrating Christmas, later going into detail about their Christmas activity as a group and how they made her feel.
The girls did a secret santa between the six of them, Petal getting Soomin, Soomin getting Melody, Melody getting Sooyeon, Sooyeon getting Jieun, Jieun getting Stella and Stella getting Petal.
The gifts consisted mostly of gift cards and clothing. Except for Melody who got Sooyeon a brand new set of reeds for her clarinet.
Jieun cut her hair back to the short shoulder length bob she had a few comebacks back.
Petal was dotted on a lot in the promotions, especially the dance bts dance performance video, due to her ankle injury she got last comeback.

Chapter Four: A Crappy Day
Recap: You survive dinner with the boys and even manage to have a conversation with Jin that doesn't go to shit. Even though you are starting to understand the affection these boys have for you, you are beset with worries and anxieties in the cover of night. All is quieted though when you end up in Jin's arms and you can finally sleep.
This office building isn’t very big and you need a place to hide.  The basement is not an option because Tae might be in one of the practice rooms.  He’ll immediately know something is wrong and you don’t want to distract him.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.  This morning, you spilled coffee on important documents, accidentally sent an old draft of a contract instead of the updated version to be signed, and just now, you deleted an entire employee file from the computer system.  Jieun, your cubicle buddy, told you it wasn’t that big of a deal.  They were all fixable mistakes.  You reprinted the documents, emailed the very patient vendor to switch out the contracts, and thankfully, there was a hardcopy of the employee file that you scanned back into the system.  Regardless, you’ve been at Big Hit for three months, so you shouldn’t be making such clumsy mistakes.
You’re taking a late lunch because it took some time to rebuild the employee computer file.  You wanted to avoid the sympathetic looks of the other employees anyway, so this works in your favor since the staff break room should be empty by now.  Your relief is pulled up short when you spot a figure napping in the corner.  Someone is slumped over one of the back tables.  This person’s white hoodie and jeans is a far cry from business casual, so they aren’t an employee, but now you don’t know what to do.
Nervously tugging on the hem of your blouse, you remind yourself that the basement is off limits and debate if you should hole up in the bathroom, but there’s only one bathroom for the entire office.  Resigned, you position yourself as far away from the stranger as you can and tuck into your sad three day old kimbap.  You’re gonna give yourself until the end of your lunch to wallow and then pull yourself together.  You have to.  If you don’t, you’ll continue slipping up and get fired.  You almost wanna quit out of shame and embarrassment, but can't because of Tae.  Tae’s sad puppy eyes come to mind, radiating with disappointed understanding, none of which you can handle.  The guilt would eat at you.  The guilt is eating at you now.
The stranger is rousing.  There’s movement under their hoodie.  You pretend to occupy yourself on your phone, hiding your face behind a curtain of hair, but there’s no scraping back of a chair, or further rustling of clothes.  Peeking at the stranger, a rodent pokes its head out from under the hoodie.  Is that a mouse?  Is this building so overrun with mice that they’re crawling around in people’s clothes?  You shudder.  It sniffs the air and takes tentative steps away from its cotton-blend sanctuary.  It’s less mouse-like and more chipmunk.
The chipmunk thing scurries across the table and jumps, gliding to the ground.  Oh, it’s a flying squirrel!  With that, you’re able to deduce who the sleeping figure is.  Making sure not to make any sudden movements, you carefully shuffle towards the slumped figure, making a wide circle around the flying squirrel who is cautiously keeping an eye on you.
Tae had introduced you to Jimin, but hadn’t introduced you to any of his other members yet.  Honestly, there just hasn’t been any time.  When Tae isn’t working, he’s practicing.  And when you’re not working here, you volunteer at a youth center.  Tae says he’ll introduce you to the rest eventually.  You can tell he loves them and that they take care of him by the stories he tells.  If they didn’t, you’d definitely do something about it.  You may be a shy, anxious wreck 99% of the time, but no one messes with your Tae.
So, without Tae or a reason for a false sense of bravado, you’re not ready for this particular introduction.  You shift your weight from foot to foot as you waffle on whether you should just pretend you didn’t see anything and leave.  Don’t be a coward.  You brace yourself and poke the sleeping idol.
Kim Seokjin jerks up, hood sliding off to reveal hair sticking out in different directions.  Except for the hair, the stylist unnies obviously don’t need to do much.  Seokjin’s face is perfection even with red sleep lines pressed to his cheek.  His sculpted cheekbones and the upturn of his nose provide him with a regal air as he turns his pouty lips and narrowed, sleepy eyes at you, You’re taken aback when he scowls at you, voice dripping with irritation.
“Do you work here, or did you wander in?”
You’re immediately on your guard.  You can understand his wariness, but you haven’t even done anything.  In fact, you’re trying to help him out.  Your own irritation flares to life.  “I work here.”
“Really?  Well, I’m exhausted and even if you are an employee, you have no business waking me.  You should also know asking for autographs or pictures will get you fired, so I wouldn’t recommend it.”
His tone is icy and condescending and you SNAP.  “Well, my day has been crap, my lunch has been crap, and even if you are tired, you have no business being crappy to me.  You should also know that your pet has escaped.”  You point at the flying squirrel, who has made careful progress towards the open door.  Kim Seokjin shoots up, knocking his chair to the floor, which startles both you and the rodent, making you stumble back and the rodent to make a mad scramble out the door.
“Fuck!  Odeng!  Stop!” Seokjin shouts, running after it.  Rolling your eyes, you right the chair, stuff the rest of your gimbap into your mouth, and march out of the room.  You are Y/N, Seoul graduate, and employee of Big Hit.  You worked hard to get to where you are and no one is allowed to make you feel crappy, except yourself!
You spend the rest of the day fielding calls, finishing your assignments with precision, and getting started on tomorrow’s deadlines.  You’re so fired up, you even find time to help your coworkers with their tasks.  You don’t even realize it’s the end of the day until Jieun pulls you away from your computer.
Your desk partner, Lee Jieun-ssi, is a nice girl who’s been showing you the ropes.  She’s older, but shorter than you, a petite, sweet girl who is playful, but no-nonsense.  Her friendly and concise mentorship made you like her immediately, grateful to have her as your cubicle buddy.  She hands you your jacket.
“Don’t work too hard or you’ll make the rest of us look bad,” she teases.  “Let’s go out for drinks.  Jin gave us some money for the first two rounds.”
“Kim Seokjin-ssi?”
“Yeah.  It was weird.  Sometimes the boys will chip in to buy us coffee or bring us snacks for employee appreciation, but they can barely afford that since they’re still just up and coming.  It’s the first time one of the guys has treated us to drinks.”
You feel a bit leery, your chest tight.  “He didn’t say why he was giving us the money?”
Jieun shrugs.  “He said to turn a crappy day into a good night.”
You wake up face swollen and feeling crusty, next to a sprawled out, drooling Jin.  The indignity of his sleeping form is endearing and you may watch him for a bit like a creep before rousing him for dance practice.  Half awake, he trudges around the room to get ready for his day as you continue to lay there, studying him and reflecting.
In the dark of night, you and Jin had lain intertwined.  There was no sexual charge, no fluttering, pounding of the heart.  Simply an ease and contentedness of trust.  But the light of day dilutes it with the reminder of your first morning, because Jin did lie to you.  He lied about you passing out from drunkenness, which went against Rule Two.  You don’t know why you’re so fixated on this lie.  Maybe it isn’t as big of a deal as you think it is, but then why lie at all?  When you’re next to Jin, you feel settled, so why is this one point so unsettling?
Your dream last night was also unsettling because it was so vivid you can still feel your irritation and leeriness.  It was a memory.  Are these the beginning steps to regaining your memories?  What was the trigger?  Was it Jin’s offhand remark on how you met?  Was it Jin’s presence?  Was it the mention of Odeng?  Or was it coincidental and simply the passing of time?  And Jin said he had bedazzled you at your first meeting, but if the dream really was a memory of your meet-cute, it was just shy of disastrous.  How did you two ever even become friends?
You school your face into a smile when Jin waves his farewell to you.  Jin is busy and you decide you’ll ask him about it when he isn't in a rush to get to the dance studio.  Tuning into the distant sound of the boys horsing around, you drag yourself out of bed as soon as you hear the front door close behind them when they leave.  All is silent, which is bad for you.  You are gonna need something to occupy yourself with before you spiral into overthinking.
Wandering into the main living area, you discover Hobi cutting up fruit.
“Hobi-oppa. What are you doing here?” you blurt in surprise.
“I’m spending the day with my lil sis,” he grins, holding up an orange wedge over his smile.  Despite your reassurances that you’ll be fine on your own, he whips out a spool of elastic and boxes of beads saying the only way to renew your friendship is with friendship bracelets.  You give in because Hobi is adorable and there’s a part of you that is relieved, so you both spend the whole day making bracelets and watching Running Man.
The next day, Jimin stays behind claiming his ankle is hurt.  This is quickly refuted when he destroys you in the ensuing rounds of Just Dance, the twinkle in his eyes daring you to comment on it.  The following day, Jungkook and Taehyung tackle you awake, dragging you to a PC room to play Gang Beasts and Fall Guys.  The next couple of days are much the same, one or two of the boys each taking turns to hang back to keep you company in the condo, occasionally interrupted and shooed out by the cleaning ajumma so she can work.
It’s such a whirlwind of fun and peace that you can’t find the right time to bring up your dream memory.  You’re worried that this development will change how they interact with you.  Hobi is ecstatically chipper, no stern Hoseok in sight.  Yoongi is less wary and watchful and participates with you more.  Jungkook finally feels safe enough to be boldly bratty with you. Namjoon is less embarrassed around you.  Jin is much more relaxed and silly.  And Jimin and Tae…well, you’re sure they’ll always be the same teasing silly duo, treating you the same no matter what version of you is present, which makes you happy.  The point being, you feel like you’ve finally found your stride with them and you don’t want them to go back to being so careful around you.  And you really are so thankful, heart full of soft fondness and cute aggression in the face of their increasingly obvious excuses to make sure you are never alone, but by the next week, the guilt is eating you up because you are definitely getting in the way of their schedules.
Yoongi bookmarks his page, as you throw down the romance novel you’ve been reading.  You are both lying under a blanket fort that the both of you constructed in the living room.  He lifts an eyebrow at you, silently questioning.
“Did the love triangle implode?” he asks wryly.
“This can’t continue,” you groan.
“They might still become a polyamorous couple.  I heard that the author is very progressive.”
“Yoongi-oppa! I’m not talking about the book.  You guys can’t keep staying home with me.”
He sits himself up, rubbing his shoulder.  “But it’s a nice break.”
“And I know you boys deserve it.”
“Plus, we love spending time with you.”
The sincerity in his tone almost has you dismissing this whole conversation so you can crawl back into the safe space they have created for you, but you muscle through knowing its for the good of everyone.
“This isn’t sustainable.  We can’t go on like this.  Why don’t I just follow you guys around so you can keep your schedule?  You’re always surrounded by an entourage anyway.  What’s one more face masked employee?”
Yoongi sets his book down and pulls you up to a sitting position so he can look you in the eye.  “We’re not worried about people seeing you.  We just don’t wanna overwhelm you.”
Would you be overwhelmed?  Probably.  But the panic of the first day has subsided to a manageable level.  With the boys’ help, you’ve fallen into an easy pattern, opening up and becoming more comfortable with being yourself around them.  You are confident you can cope with any anxious hiccups that could potentially arise.  Judgment made, you throw yourself at Yoongi, bowling him over.  He hugs you securely as you mumble into his shirt.
“I swear I’ll be fine, Yoongi-oppa.”
He silently strokes your back for a contemplative minute and then sighs in mild disappointment, “This really was a nice break.”
“One, two, three, four!  Five, six, seven, eight!  Bah, Bah!  Bada, bah!”  Hoseok counts out the beats as he prowls around the studio, scrutinizing the boys as they go through their formations.  They’ve been going at it for hours, covered in sweat, but diligently run the choreography again and again.
After the boys came home yesterday, you sat the boys down and insisted on accompanying them to work so they don’t fall behind schedule, pointing out that it’d also be a good way to acclimate you to reality.  They argued passionately that you should take your time and rest, but you’ve been feeling antsy and useless.  You even started cleaning the condo just to feel productive, but stopped when the cleaning ajumma started giving you death glares for doing her job.
Before the boys had arrived, Yoongi had told you that if you really wanted something, you had to stay persistent because none of them really had the heart to say no to you, and he was right.  You stubbornly held your ground and eventually you all came to a compromise.  You had to promise that if you felt even slightly overwhelmed, you would speak up–no hiding your anxiety, or panic–and then one of them would accompany you home.
You almost regretted your decision because dinner was a little tense after that, the boys worriedly going over company protocols, safety procedures and checking in, making sure you memorized everything.  The checking in part didn’t make sense to you because they said they’ll swipe you in, but if you’re an employee, why can’t they give you an employee card to swipe in yourself?  You suspect they’re trying to make sure you don’t wander off.
That’s how you find yourself sitting at a table in the corner of the dance studio with Jin’s manager, Hobum, a bear of a man who gives off fatherly vibes, and his hoobae, Jungkook’s manager, Jiwon.  They deal you cards for another round of godori.  This is the tenth time today they’ve gone over winning hands, but you’re still having trouble picking up on the mechanics of the game.  Their endless patience is impressive, but being managers of the boys, patience must be a survival skill.
You blame your distraction on the boys of course. The whiplash from their precise, seductive moves to their goofy hijinks makes it hard to stay focused and invested in the game.  For example, take this very moment.  The seasoned managers are once again explaining how to count points among the four subcategories of cards, but your eyes keep sliding to Yoongi’s stilted movements.
He just cannot get the body roll down to the beat.  It’s much too sharp, an almost violent hip thrust.  You purse your lips, but you’re pretty sure the managers already know your attention is split.  They quirk their eyebrows at the squeak that escapes from your throat, despite your best efforts to hold in a guffaw.   Hoseok tells the boys to take a break and pulls Yoongi aside to demonstrate the body roll to a syncopated count. Yoongi tries again.  Hip thrust.  Hoseok repeats his body roll and Yoongi…thrusts harder.  The maknaes have no qualms about mocking and copying Yoongi’s air hump, giggling and collapsing in a pile of limbs on the hardwood floor.
“Ya!  Why is this so difficult?!” Yoongi huffs.  His hips deliberately jackrabbit and even dance leader Hobi can’t stop himself from laughing when the rest of us deteriorate into a mess of chortles.  The managers lean back, lips quirked in amusement.
Hobi runs through the body roll again, but this time slowly.  Each part of his body isolates as he rolls from top to bottom.  Yoongi’s eyes widen.  “How did you make it look harder than before?!”
Namjoon doubles over, wheezing at Yoongi’s despair, which makes him easy prey to the maknaes who absorb him into their pile on the ground.  Finally giving up on all pretenses of playing godori, you propose, “You could just change the body roll to hip thrusts permanently.  Army would be agreeable to that, I bet.”
“You don’t think it’ll take away from the meaning of the song?” Jiwon inquires, distractedly collecting all the cards.
Jin snorts.  “Cuz’ a body roll does a much better job to emphasize how corporate capitalism is the glass ceiling that perpetuates classism.”  He manages to pull Namjoon out from the maknae trap and they retreat to a different side of the room.
“Don’t discount the power of a hip thrust,” Jimin crows, thrusting his own hips from where he lays on the floor.  “They’ll find the meaning.  We’re leading Army to water, and hip thrusts will make them drink it.”
Namjoon grimaces.  “You make us sound like a cult,” he says, pained, at the same time you say, “Then why are Army still thirsty after?”
You grin at the snickers elicited from Hobum and Jiwon.  Hoseok rolls his eyes, but his exasperation is belied by his reluctant grin trying not to encourage us.  He shakes his head.  “No. Hip. Thrusts.  We’ve already got enough in Baepsae, and Army are insatiable.  Yoongi, I know you know how to body roll.  Was Black Swan a fever dream to you???”
Hoseok flicks Yoongi’s forehead and personally instructs him again.  Jimin and Tae are starfished on the ground goading Jungkook who is now playing hopscotch around their limbs.  Namjoon and Jin, in murmured conversation, are sharing a water bottle between them.  And the managers begin discussing the day’s schedule.  You lean back in your chair and soak in the room’s thrumming energy.
Not long after, everyone gets ready to leave in different directions, Jin and the maknaes to a costume fitting and the rapline to record adlibs to a remixed version of Ugh.
“Who do you wanna shadow?” Jin asks, shrugging on his previously abandoned hoodie.
“Actually, I was thinking of heading to the HR Department?  I wanna get a feel for where I’ll be working.”  You’re not sure they’ll go along with your request, but you’ve been thinking that visiting your office would be a good way to mentally prepare yourself for a job you don’t remember how to do.  You’re honestly surprised you still have a job considering it seems like you’re gone most of the time.  “I promise not to leave the building.”
The boys hesitate, glancing at each other in silent conversation.  You can already tell they’re trying to figure out who to leave behind with you.  “Guys.  I’ll be fine,” you insist.
This does nothing to reassure them.  Their silent conversation becomes not so silent anymore as they start playing rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to stay with you.  Desperate, you turn your biggest puppy eyes on the managers.   Jiwon looks to Hobum, his senior, who unlocks his phone and types something out.  Hobum returns his phone to his pocket and then winks a very Jin-like wink at you.  He presses a finger to his lips to indicate silence and then gestures to shoo you towards one of the doors while the boys are distracted.  Grinning and blowing a kiss to Hobum and Jiwon, you escape, the boys still playing best out of three.
You stand out as you wander around the building.  You probably should have asked Hobum where your department is located.  You’re a little out of place amongst the professionally dress employees.  The boys had picked out your outfit, an all black ensemble of hoodie, jeans, baseball cap and a face mask, discretion being their goal.  You pass by several individuals or groups who are dressed almost the same as you, and it’s not until you recognize Hoshi that you realize the casually dressed people must be trainees or idols.
You don’t have an employee card, which again doesn’t make sense to you, but you politely ask passing security personnel for help and they swipe you access to the elevator, directing you to the HR Department.  You can’t tell if they recognize you as an employee, know you personally, or if security is just lax, but you decide not to push your luck with questions.
The HR Department is on the Ninth Floor and takes up an entire corner of the building, a huge open space with partitionless desks scattered around and a lounging area for where employees can take a small break.  Since it’s on a corner, two of the walls are floor to ceiling windows that let in all the daylight.  You absolutely love it.  Everyone is working hard, keyboards clacking, a multitude of different conversations going on, but the atmosphere is relaxed and not as intimidating and stuffy as you thought it’d be.
As you wander around trying to locate your desk, all the employees greet you familiarly, smiles and relief that you’ve returned.  It’s almost a overwhelming, but you’re able to casually return their distracted greetings, grateful no one tries to lock you into conversation.  You don’t want to disappoint them by not recognizing them.  You spot your familiar scrawl at one of the desks and sit yourself down.  Your desk is neat, but your monitor is littered with sticky notes, reminders, memos, and even a copy of the infamous Bang PD-nim doodle.  You laugh quietly to yourself and pick it off, wondering if Jungkook made it for you.  Another sticky note is attached to the doodle, as if someone had peeled both of them together.
“Kim Cho-Hee is still at large.  That’s why the boys are afraid to leave you alone.”
You don’t expect the visceral reaction at seeing the name.  You feel lancing pain where you know the scars are on your body and it’s all you can do not to start hyperventilating next to all these strangers.  You huddle your head in your arms against the desk, hoping to discreetly pull yourself together.
So, the sasaeng’s name is Kim Cho-hee.  She apparently beat you into a coma and somehow she’s not in jail.  How could this be?  And it now makes sense why the boys are constantly hovering.  You thought it was only about the memory thing, but their vigilance is to make sure Kim Cho-hee doesn’t get to you again.  Why wouldn’t they tell you?  Wouldn’t it be safer for you to know?  Does this have to do with Rule Five?
A hand gently rubs your back in a soothing motion.  Oh, crap.  Someone is witnessing your breakdown.  You carefully look up.  The black hair of the woman standing over you is shorter than you remember, a shoulder length bob, but you immediately recognize this petite, sweet person.
“Jieun-ssi?”
Jieun grins, but you spy a flash of sadness.  “I’ll always be your unnie and work-wife, Y/N.  Leave the ssi for when we wanna annoy Yoongi, okay?”
“Okay, unnie,” you say hesitantly.  It tastes foreign, yet familiar in your mouth.  Jieun’s smile deepens, her cheeks bunching up so high, her eyes almost disappear.  She’s so adorable, you can’t help but smile too, some of the tension sliding off you.
“Guess what?” she asks, suddenly, eyes wide in glee.
“What?”  You can’t help getting drawn into her conspiratorial brightness.
Your eyes follow the direction to where she gestures towards a young woman across the room.  “I think you won the bet.  I thought Daeyon was just gaining weight, but you thought she was pregnant.  She’s definitely gotten bigger and her roundness is more defined.  Even if she hasn’t said anything, it definitely looks like a pregnancy.”
You observe the red headed woman as she carefully squats to sit in her chair.  You can tell she chose to wear the peplum top and fashionably baggy blazer to hide her belly, but it really doesn’t help much.  Something about her makes you sad and you don’t know why.
“We should respect her privacy,” you say more firmly than you intend.  “Um, I mean.  She might not be in a good situation, you know?”
Jieun laughs at your stumbling words.  “No worries.  You’re probably right.  I picked a bad piece of office gossip to distract you with, huh?  Oh, look, it’s Ji-Hoon.  He works in maintenance.”
She points out Ji-Hoon who empties a wastebasket into his cart.
“You’re trying to distract me?”
“Yes, now hush.  That’s Ji-Hoon.  He’s very shy and skittish.  He’s worked here for a couple years, but he’s the one regular maintenance guy who doesn’t socialize with us, or anyone.  He just comes in, does his job, and then leaves without a peep.”
You’re about to look away, when you catch him slowly opening someone’s desk drawer and stealing a chocolate bar.  You and Jieun look at each other and then break out into giggles.
Jieun says, “You and I have a bet going on when Jaebom is going to catch on that Ji-Hoon is the one stealing his snacks.  He thinks it’s Daeyon because of pregnancy cravings, but he hasn’t said anything to her because she hasn’t said anything about her pregnancy.”
Ji-Hoon returns to his cart and Jieun calls out, “Hi, Ji-Hoon-ssi!”
A couple of the employees look up and Ji-Hoon’s eyes widen like a deer in headlights.  He does a weird half bow and then shoves his cart out of the room, stumbling to the sound of Jieun’s giggles.
“See, what’d I tell you?  Skittish.”
You stare at her.  “You are evil.”
“I’m brilliant.”  Jieun pretentiously flips her hair and you both break into giggles again.
Something drops from your hand, which sobers you instantly, seeing the name Kim Cho-hee staring back at you ominously on the floor.  Jieun picks up the crumpled sticky note and reads it, her brows furrowed, muttering about men being annoyingly impossible.  Sighing, she pulls back your rolling desk chair.  “Come on.  Let’s go have lunch and talk.”
The cafeteria is huge and the buffet is seemingly endless.  Again, you’re both surprised and appreciative that despite the modern architecture of steel beams and glass, the building feels serene and inviting, like you’re standing in a greenhouse.  Your tray is piled with jjajangmyeon, kimchi and a fried egg.  You dig in as Jieun folds the note into some sort of origami.
“Have the boys been unbearable?” she asks, concentrating on smoothing the crumpled edges.
“Unbearable?”
“Being all overly protective, I mean.”
“Oh, well, I thought they were just a normal level of protective.  I don’t have anything to compare this experience with, so I thought they were always like that.”
“To a degree, I suppose that’s true,” Jieun acknowledges.
“Are you friends with them too?”
“Well, they kind of came as a package deal with you, so I had no choice,” she teases.
“What a sacrifice on your part.  Mother Theresa’s got nothing on you.”
“And you should remind those ungrateful brats for me.”
“Why don’t you remind them yourself?”
Jieun’s origami folding pauses almost imperceptibly, but there’s a thread of hurt in her voice when she says, “You’re kind of their whole world, so it’s hard to get a word in sometimes.”
“Oh.”  You don’t really know what to say to that.  The boys have treated you like family and taken care of you, but to be told you’re their whole world?  Hearing it from a third party feels surreal.  You feel awful though, your gut twinging.  You don’t want your injury, or whatever this memory thing is, to monopolize their time.  And you feel bad that in doing so, they’ve been neglecting Jieun.  “I’m sorry I’ve kept the boys from you.”
“What?”  Jieun drops the frog she folded from the note.  “Don’t apologize about that.”
“But–”
“I’m actually more mad that they keep me from seeing you.  I’m just glad Hobum-oppa texted me a heads up that you were coming in today.”
“Wait, what?  They won’t let you see me?”
“They hole you up in their condo like dragons with a princess in a tower.  Safe?  Yes.  But I don’t like how it isolates you.  I’ve told them so many times that it isn’t healthy, AND it’s not healthy to keep secrets.”
Jieun makes the functioning frog jump into your half finished noodles.
“Can you tell me about–?”  You can’t even say Kim Cho-hee out loud.  The breath in your lungs grows stale as your heart pounds painfully against your sternum.
Jieun reaches across the table and gently holds your hand.  “Kim Cho-hee is an American.  She originally came to Seoul to teach English and then became a maintenance worker for the company.  Now knowing she’s a saesang, we know she did it to get closer to the boys.  You caught her going through trash to retrieve the boys’ sweaty tissues and used water bottles in one of the dance studios.”
None of what she says stirs any memory or recollection.  You do want to remember, but you also don’t.  There’s a fog along the edges of your mind, and the closer you get to it, the louder your entire being blares a warning to stay back while a whispering of phantom pain echoes all over your body, your muscles seizing as if anticipating the next blow.  Shaking your head, you ask, “Did I fire her?  Was she fired?”
“Not then and there.  She covered up and said she lost an earring and thought it might have fallen into the bin.  You shared your misgivings with the higher ups though and an investigation was commenced.  Nothing concrete came of it though and she stayed on.  You were not happy.”  She hesitates.  “The dust settled for a while, and then, we don’t know what happened after that.  We found you in bad shape in the office.  She had bashed your head with a keyboard, or at least we assumed she did.  The cameras were going through maintenance, so nothing was captured of the incident, but the last note you had on your calendar was that you were going to talk with her.  There wasn’t enough evidence to press charges, so we had to let her go.  The guys were pissed and angry, but all we could do was blacklist her from the industry.  She disappeared after that.  No one has seen her since.”
Blacklisted by Big Hit and Hybe means she’d have trouble finding a job anywhere in Seoul, not just the music industry.  It seems like Hybe and the boys did the best they could, but the cameras going through maintenance seems like too much of a coincidence.  “Do you have a picture of her?”
“No.  Her file was marked confidential and we aren’t allowed access to it by Bang PD-nim himself.  You’ve tried digging into her in the past to an almost obsessive degree and they didn’t think it was good for your health.”
“They?  You mean, the boys?”
“And Bang PD-nim.”
This entire time, you’ve been going with the flow, blindly following whatever the boys tell you, but you’re not so sure that’s the right thing to do anymore, especially now that you have this information.  You can’t live the rest of your life coddled by them.  And you can’t live with letting other people make decisions for you.  Kim Cho-hee was still out there just living her life while you’re stuck on an endless loop.  You silently despair at the injustice of it all.
Jieun removes the origami from your tray.  She curls into herself, looking small and unsure, which doesn’t suit her.  Softly, she says, “I think..I mean, I know the guys are just trying to protect you.  They don’t want this to weigh on you, but what do boys know?  It’s going to weigh on you no matter what, so I just tell you every time because I know I would want to know.  Although, I’m not always sure I’m doing the right thing.”
“Isn’t it against the rules?  You telling me all this?”
Hearing this, Jieun's whole body language changes, headstrong and vexed.  “Aish, the rules.  The rules can rot!  I don’t know why everyone keeps sticking to the rules.  I worry that the rules are harming you more than helping.”
A sentiment you agree with.  You’re sure you had good reasons to make and keep the rules originally, but the rules are beginning to feel suffocating more than liberating.  The rules aren't meant to liberate you though.  They're meant to keep you safe behind walls.  Walls you're beginning to resent.
You are grateful to have Jieun.  You can tell she cares for you, but it’s different than the care the boys give you.  She’s brisk and blunt, and you hadn’t realized you needed that.  “Thank you.  I did want to know.  About Cho-hee,” you tell her.  “It’s good that I know.  Thank you, unnie.”
Jieun defrosts, a relieved smile gracing her elf-like features.  “Well, then.  We can always talk about that witch a different time, if you want.  How about after work, we go look at some baby gifts for the baby shower that is inevitably going to happen.”  Your cubicle buddy waggles her eyebrows at you and you laugh in agreement.

The Great Produce 48 Rewatch: Ep 4, Mamma Mia (Kara) Challenge
Tumblr media
Welcome back to the Great Produce48 Rewatch Recap Project of 2023-2024! I have run into difficulties, in that the original site I was watching it on went down for a day or two, but I fought back with the help of a different site that still houses the P48 episodes, just with Spanish subtitles. My Spanish is pretty good so it’s not that big a deal, plus I have google translate on my side when I need it (which is surprisingly not that often -- thanks, Spanish department of my high school!). And YOU CAN’T STOP ME from doing this. No one wants or needs me to do it, and yet, I must. So, I continue. Also, when I was almost done with this particular post, the original website came back! What a journey. Let’s go on that journey together, my dear ones!
In the previous post, Jo Yuri and friends performed Short Hair by AOA. It’s time for the Mamma Mia teams to perform! Check it out.
Lee Seungki calls the two teams up to perform the song, noting that the choreography was done by Dance Bae herself back in the day.  Backstage, the girls say that they are really looking forward to this performance.
The teams come up -- Team 1 in black, and Team 2 in white.
Tumblr media
Murase Sae, Nakanishi Chiyori,  Park Minji, Park Jieun, Kim Hyunah
Tumblr media
Miyazaki Miho, Cho Sarang, Bibian, Choi Soeun, Shinozaki Ayana, Shin Suhyun
Team 1 introduces themselves as “The Eyeshadows” (in English) --and add, first in Korean and then in Japanese, “We’ll paint your hearts lots of different colors!” -- and Team 2 introduces themselves as “OMG, what are we going to do?” Like, that’s their name. I have a lot to say about team 2’s outfits, but we’ll get there.
Seungki asks Park Minji how she’s feeling, considering that she did this once before in a previous season. She answers that she thought she’d feel less nervous, but  if anything, she might be even more anxious! But, she adds, they’ve worked really hard so that they can do their best.
Seungki asks each team to give a statement. Chiyori says her team will never lose! Souen says that her team really wants to win! Hwighting!
Seungki says it’s Showtime! But it is not Showtime! It is… FLASHBACK TIME!
The members:
Kim Hyunah, age 23, who I call husky voiced Hyunah, from B class, ranked a sad 72. 😣
Murase Sae, 21, who auditioned with Funny People, rose from D to C and is currently ranked 43.
Nakanishi Chiyori, 23,  Wacky Chiyori, who auditioned with What's Your Name?, rose from D to C, and is ranked 37.
Park Jieun, 20,  future ex-Purple Kiss, who fell from C to F and was ranked 70th.
Park Minji, age 19, PD101 trainee and future Secret Number member, from B class, ranked 56.
When we left off, we were learning that Wacky Chiyori is the master of hilarious facial expressions, but that plotline has been abandoned for this next segment. It’s also helpful to recall that Hyunah is the center.
Tumblr media
Minji, left; Hyunah, central, and I’m not sure who is to the right since we never see their faces. That’s ok, they’re apparently not important to the story and get 0 camera time.
We start off with a few of the girls in one of those tiny practice rooms, working on their singing together. Park Minji interviews, “this year, I want to be recognized for my singing ability and show everybody what I have to offer.”
We cut to the girls rehearsing with Soyou. She’s having them sing while they dance, which honestly is a good sign -- I’m sure she starts off just listening to them sing, and if they did terribly at that I don’t think she’d ask them to dance at the same time.
She’s making this face.
Tumblr media
I dare you to determine, based on her facial expression, what she thinks of them.
Turns out she has nothing but praise for Kim Hyunah, who is my favorite for a reason, and that reason is that she’s great. Soyou even praises her dancing.
Tumblr media
Minji (far right) is ready for her critique.
But to Minji, Soyou says, “I’ve told you before, but you shouldn’t sing this all “pretty.” We get a flashback that we’ve never seen before. The MNET editors go pretty ham with this scene, adding in a lovely sepia tone to things so we know that this is a flashback.
In it, Soyou is telling Minji, “You have a lovely voice, but you have to focus in on it alone. You keep trying to look pretty while you sing, and you focus a lot on your mouth.”
Back in… the main timeline, I guess I’ll call it…. she has Minji try again, but interrupts her almost immediately. “Not like that. Don’t drag the sound. Just sing like this:” -- and she demonstrates. Minji imitates her and it sounds great. Soyou nods, adding, “The sound has to grow gradually stronger.” I like seeing this really specific voice work, because the change that Soyou was making to Minji’s voice was really subtle and specific and good.
Tumblr media
Minji
Then she has all of the girls sing the high “la pa padi” part, and though they’re all a bit pitchy without accompaniment, they’re basically hitting the notes, and more comfortably than Minji.
Minji interviews that her voice is her best attribute, and even so, she hasn’t been able to establish herself as a main vocalist. She thinks her anxiety is getting the best of her because she doesn’t want to get eliminated again.
Time passes and it’s their dress rehearsal. Minji sounds awful. Just awful. She’s obviously been over rehearsing and she blew out her voice. It’s much worse than Jang Gyuri’s from Peekaboo.
The trainers are just like…
Tumblr media
Jeremy asks what’s wrong, but not in a way that seems to demand an answer. Soyou is like, but you’re the main vocalist, if you sound bad you make the whole team sound bad. Minji says that she originally a part in falsetto, and had been trying to sing it full voice, and that was the problem. She asks if it’s ok to change it now. She tries again, but falters, about to cry. Chiyori and the other girls try to comfort her.
Tumblr media
Why does Chiyori’s top fit so weird on her? She’s a cute girl -- stylist unnie, wtf?
Jeremy kindly acknowledges the pressure that vocalists face, but it isn’t just that -- Minji is still thinking about getting eliminated last time and how she doesn’t want it to happen again now. It’s so sad how scarred she seems to be from her first elimination. She talks about it for a while in an interview but it comes down to that it sucked to be eliminated before, and she is terrified it will happen again.  I think it’s really interfering with her mental health. Poor girl. This show is such a mess.
Backstage, she’s starting to cry again.
LTRL Sae, Jieun, Minji, Hyunah, Chiyori
Hyunah says, “It’s ok, don’t cry. Don’t feel so pressured.”
Minji says, “I feel like it will be really bad if I don't do well.”
Jieun, bless her heart, says “It’s ok if you don’t do well, too. Who cares?”
Tumblr media
Minji voice overs, “I want to cry tears of joy when we win. I want to hear people say that al our efforts weren’t in vain.”
And now, it really is performance time! The judges are ready…
Tumblr media
I love this shot of the trainer’s room. They’re just in some corner with some big wooden blocks and a few bottles of water. They at least have moderately comfortable looking chairs, but they have to hold their clipboards in their laps. Jeremy is just using his phone to take notes. IDK, the whole thing is so budget. It cracks me up.
As the lights go down, you hear a few shouts from the audience, encouraging Minji and Chiyori by name.
Unfortunately, there are no blessed edits of either group this time, so we’ll just have to make do with the MNET edit and try not to die.  Or you could just watch Kim Hyunah’s fancam -- she’s the center, and for whatever reason the camera isn’t as focused on her face as fancams sometimes are, so it’s almost like a full cam.
Tumblr media
My thoughts:
It wasn’t terrible or anything, but the vocals weren’t great. When all five of them are singing in the chorus it’s ok, but each of them has kind of thing vocals and when they sing once at a time, it doesn’t sound great overall.
Minji pulls off the high notes -- of course MNET has to drag it out and all that, sigh -- but it doesn’t sound particularly lovely. She also continues to do that thing where she uses her whole  body to hit a note.
Tumblr media
She sort of sticks out her neck and thickens her throat and just basically does everything in her power to look awkward and hurt her throat. I know that Soyou and Jeremy are doing what they can to help teach the girls how to sing properly, but my god does she need more lessons. I hope that by now, 5 or 6 years later, she has.
Everyone else is a mixed bag. I think Hyunah is an alto, and her part was a little too high for her so she had a hard time. You can actually hear a bit of Park Jieun’s talent leading into the bridge -- you can understand how she would have been in Purple Kiss -- but her voice sounds pretty hoarse in a lot of the song. Slippery elm tea, you dum-dums! Sigh. And as much as I love Chiyori’s personality, neither she nor Sae has a voice that I would like to listen to.
Tumblr media
LTR: Minji, Hyunah, Jieun, Chiyori, Sae
Dancewise, it’s the same problem as ever - the camera work hides everything. From what I can see, they look good -- they’re throwing themselves into it and they look pretty synchronized. It’s fun to watch them overall.
Stage presence is also pretty good overall. Sae is good at a smoldering look -- a wink, a lip bite, that kind of thing --  and Chiyori just looks happy to be on stage. Jieun looks down at the ground a lot, and Minji telegraphs every note she sings, neither of which is ideal.
I really don’t know which of these five I would have voted for, but it would have been one of Hyunah or Minji, I think. Hyunah does a great job as center, but her vocals were a little off. Minji looked great when she wasn’t singing, and did a decent job singing, but she was also a little lacking.
I can’t quite give her a vote because of her not-great vocals, but I will say that Sae came into her own in this performance. She’s much more suited to this sexy concept than she was to the silly “Funny People” performance she did as her audition.
Tumblr media
LTR: Sae, Jieun, Hyunah, Chiyori, Minji
The MNET edit is nearly intolerable, as per ujh. They make a big deal out of Sae’s wink. If I went on a show like this, I’d wink constantly. I’d basically never stop. It would be hard to see but it would be worth it.
When we come to Minji’s high notes, they do a flashback and a few annoying instant replays, and then they make a big deal out of her doing an ok job. The judges praise the group as a whole, and everyone freaks out about Sae biting her lip sexily in the ending fairy. Ok, I revise my previous statement. I’d alternate between winking and lip biting. It would be hard to see and my lips would hurt, but it would be worth it. Add in the headache I’d get from all the hair tossing and I’d basically be incapacitated, but I’d win the voters’ hearts!
Tumblr media
Backstage, the girls hug each other and tell each other that they did a good job. Minji voices over that she’s gotten her confidence back about singing. Well, that’s nice.
Team 2
Team 2 comes up to the stage, accompanied by intense orchestral music. Suhyun voice overs that they worked hard, and she doesn’t want this to be her last stage.  Let’s remember who the members of this team are:
Cho Sarang, 14, who sang Tomorrow at the audition, fell from B to F (ouch!) and is currently ranked 90th (ouch again!). She has an eye patch on for some of the rehearsals.
Choi Soeun, 16, who did Question Mark at the audition, fell from B to C and is currently ranked 92 (oh no!)
Miyazaki Miho, 24, our multilingual queen, who has stayed in D and is currently ranked 16th place
Murakawa Bibian, 18 but looks like a baby doll, firmly stationed in F class and ranked 31st
Shin Suhyun, 22, the show’s favorite punching bag, who fell from D to F and is ranked 57th
Shinozaki Ayana, 22, one of the What's Your Name? group, with the beauty mark under her lip, firmly stationed in F class and ranked 87th
When we left off, we had found out that this team did not want to do this song at all, since they didn’t know it. Also, there’s a bit of a rivalry between Miho on this team and Chiyori on the other team, since they’re old friends from AKB48. Bibian was the chooser of this group, Miho is the leader, and Seoun is the center. Sarang is the main vocal and seems to be doing great at it in rehearsals.
We cut to their dance rehearsal. They are anxious and awkward at the start, not sure if Dance Bae wants to see their nametags or wants them to get into formation. They run through their performance, with Dance Bae occasionally shouting at them to change formation. It seems that Seoun is not in the right spot. When they’re done, Dance Bae tells them, “This is beyond belief. You’d get zero votes. I have nothing to say.” But don’t worry, fam, she has plenty to say.
She asks who the leader is, despite it being obvious that Miho is wearing the L sticker.
Tumblr media
LTR: Punching bag Suhyun, Boss-babe Miho, and Center Seoun
Dance Bae asks Miho what they were even doing with their time. It looks like they haven’t practiced at all, and they’re going to be humiliated on stage if they keep going like this. Suhyun wipes away a tear quietly. She voice overs, “Our group practiced together, but…” and we head into a flashback-within-a-flashback. Suhyun  is asking the team to wait, to confirm certain parts of the choreo for her, to start over, but it seems like everyone just wants to keep going. Suhyun is worried that they won’t get any of the details down that way, but Miho is worried they won’t learn the routine as a whole if they’re worried about details.
Tumblr media
Oh no! Miho is worried!
We’ve seen this issue come up before, and I don’t know enough about dancing to really know what’s the right approach. Getting the details right from the start prevents you from establishing bad habits. Working on the routine as a whole allows you to have the big picture so you can keep refining from there. I read a few articles on the topic and it does seem like the general consensus is big picture first, details later, but maybe there’s room for disagreement on this. It can make for some serious discord in a group, though.
Since their styles are so different, they stopped rehearsing together as much and started rehearsing on their own. Some of them notice the other group rehearsing all together and look on with sad jealousy.
It seems like they’re all worried that rehearsing the way they are will make it hard for them to beat the other team, but none of them seem to be doing anything about it.
Finally, they have a meeting in one of those tiny practice rooms.
Tumblr media
Miho has written down her thoughts. She tells her team, in Japanese from what I can hear, that she thinks that if they keep going this way, they could end up losing. They’re all charismatic and talented on their own, but no one seems confident or energetic. And, she says, if they lose to Team 1, it’ll be all over. That’s not true, of course, but whatever. She wants them to come together as a team.
Cho Sarang says, “I don’t think we knew that we all felt like that until now. But the thing is, you three already debuted in Japan and have fans waiting for you. But for us, if we’re eliminated, we have nowhere to go.”
Miho says, “But we risked everything to come to Korea. We also don’t really have anywhere to go if we get eliminated.”
They’re all kind of crying now.
Suhyun says, “It’s like Sarang said -- I also have nowhere to go back to.”
They’re all realizing that they are all desperate to win the challenge, and that powers up their teamwork! It’s time for a montage -- suddenly, they can do it! Yeah! Miho voice-overs that her team hopes that all their hard work will come across to the National Producers and win their hearts.
It’s time for the performance! Dance Bae says, “I really hope they do well.”
The performance (MNET Edit link)
It is at this point that I discovered that the original site, kshow123, is back up! And I am proud to report that my understanding of the subtitles in Spanish was spot on. Also, I might keep that Spanish website around because they have better resolution, so it might help me take better screenshots. Ok! Back to the recap.
Tumblr media
My thoughts:
Ok, first off, I have to talk about their outfits. They’re obviously based on a particular set of outfits that Kara actually wore while performing:
Tumblr media
But this wasn’t really that cute a look even on Kara.
Tumblr media
I mean, if you look really closely you can tell that it is some kind of fishnet shorts under their white shorts, but it just gives “control top pantyhose” to me. Also, I caught little Sarang pulling her shorts down a little during the performance. Just.. not great outfits overall. If one group is wearing white and one group is wearing black, the team in black tends to win. I wonder if that’s always true? I’ll have to do some research sometime. Black is slimming and makes skin look paler, which is the Korean standard, and white is the opposite.
That said, let’s talk about the performance.
The biggest problem I have with this performance is the vocals. Shin Suhyun actually does kind of ok as sub-vocal 1, but most of the other vocals sound kind of nasal or shrieky or off key. Even main vocal Sarang doesn’t do that well - the key high notes are edited as if they’re great…
Tumblr media
Everyone reacting to something, possibly Sarang’s high notes. By the way, we see Wonyoung, Na Goeun, and Ahn Yujin constantly the whole episode, reacting to everyone else’s performance.
… but she’s definitely flat. Even when she’s on key it doesn’t sound too great because her voice sounds so child-like. That’s fine if you’re singing Baby Shark, but not if you’re singing “Look at nobody but me with that passionate gaze” and “With that skill of yours, lock me up tonight.” Vocally, I think the very worst was Miho, which is such a bummer because she’s such a fun human being. She just… isn’t a very good singer. Sorry, Miho! You still seem really cool!
Dance wise, I think they do fine…? IDK. Thanks, camera man! Thameraman. Some of the moves look really awkward but that might just be the choreo.
Stage presence was a bit better. Choi Soeun does a great job as center, actually.
Tumblr media
I think her very low ranking is just because no one knows who the heck she is. Sarang and Vivian look comically out of place to me -- I think they’d both do much better in cute concepts.
Shin Suhyun tries to look sexy but she just kind of looks….
Tumblr media
… sleepy? Confused? … it’s not working.
Overall, just kind of amateur.
It’s hard to even say which was better between the two teams since neither was particular great. Sorry, girls! I know you all worked hard. I think this song is just kind of hard to pull off.
The MNET edit tries to make it seem like it was better than it was, but I don’t think the judges were that into it.  Dance Bae says to the others, “The thing is, though, they did get a lot better.” That might be the translation, so I checked the Spanish version, which essentially the same. I really get the feeling that Dance Bae was letting the others know that even though this wasn’t great, it was better than it used to be.
Backstage, Choi Soeun says, “I was really worried because we were going up on stage without ever hearing a single word of praise. But I’m thankful now because everyone did so well.”
Tumblr media
Shin Suhyun says, “I wish we could’ve done better, but it was really fun. Now I can see why people want to keep performing.”  Now you see? You never saw before? Sigh.
It’s time for… the results!
Park Minji from team one is already crying. Girl! I mean, I would be too. I would cry from the second I arrived until about a month after I’d been eliminated.
The voting results are:
Black team (win) Kim Hyun Ah 138 Murase Sae 138 Nakanishi Chiyori 48 Park Jieun 32 Park Minji 66 Average: 84.4
White team (lose) Cho Sarang 18 Choi Soeun 56 Miyazaki Miho   92 Murakawa Bibian 86 Shin Suhyun 88 Shinozaki Ayana 28
Average: 61.3
Neither Sae nor Hyunah can quite believe how many votes they got.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I’m actually not surprised at all that Kim Hyunah and Murase Sae got so many votes. Both seemed perfectly suited for the song, in both look and attitude. I am a bit surprised about Miho’s 92 votes -- you guys, her vocals were really bad --  but she must have fans as a well-established member of AKB48. Poor Sarang got one of the worst vote tallies of the night, poor kid. This was just the wrong song for her.
Then they have to wait for their averages to pop up on screen, which is so funny to me.
Tumblr media
Like, Sarang still seems optimistic that they’ll win, I think? But come on, the math is pretty obvious. Black team’s sum is higher even though they have fewer members. It seems clear that they won, and they did.
When the win is revealed, Minji just begins absolutely wailing.
Tumblr media
The girls on the white team applaud lightly, and don’t seem to cry, but Minji is crying so hard her whole team has to try to calm her down. She’s crying with relief, of course, but it really shows how deep her emotional trauma is.
They really should have therapists on hand on this show, you know? Either that, or maybe try traumatizing them a little less. IDK.
We don’t really get a reaction from the white team. Guess they just disappeared from this plane of existence.
And with that, we’re at the end of this post! In the next one, we’ll cover the High Tension teams -- and see a girl named Huh Yunjin! See you then.

TASK002 / police interview
Where were you last night, June 27th? Can anyone confirm this?
"I was at Deadlights after my shift at the hospital,” Toby said, recalling what had happened that night. It felt like everything was just a blur because it all happened so fast. “I came in for a quick drink, then by the time I got out, I saw Vera and Azra just... going at it. Punching each other, pulling each other’s hair. I was so confused because I didn’t understand how that even started, but I pulled Vera away from her, but then I got into a fight with Vera, until I just went home,” Toby said, the exhaustion from what had happened evident in his voice. “Decided to just sleep the whole night off, but then I was called in a few hours later because of the incident at Medusa.”
How do you know Azra Nadir?
“We're friends. I think. Or used to be. I don’t think she likes me very much starting last night,” Toby shrugged. “We were friends at the music fest. Had a couple of drinks together. I used to like one of her friends,” Toby shared, thinking of Sarah before his mind went to Jieun and he had to let out a deep sigh. “But, yeah. I guess my final answer is I don’t know. I think she has a lot of misplaced anger, which isn’t healthy for her, especially right now, when she’s supposed to be resting since, based on her injuries, she almost died. I was even surprised she was awake today, let alone getting into the group chat.”
When and where did you last see her, or speak to her?
“In person? Last night outside of Deadlights, and then I was the one who got her into the ambulance a couple of hours later.”
Do you know anyone at all that she did not get along with?
"I’m not really sure,” Toby admitted. “I mean, I understand that the most obvious choice here is Vera, because of what happened last night with the two of them fighting, but believe me, Vera wouldn’t have hurt her like that. She might have a short fuse, but Vera’s a good person. One of the best in this entire town.”
Do you believe they'd be capable of hurting her like this?
"Again... Vera wouldn’t do this.”

Tumblr media
Jieun shifted her weight from foot to foot, anxiously watching the clock above as the hands moved. The pit in her stomach only grew larger with every second that ticked by, dreading the moment the clock struck four.
Maybe she should’ve just called her brother. There was no world in which Jihoon wouldn’t have picked up and dropped everything the moment she said she needed him.
But that was exactly the issue. She knew how busy he was, and the idea of dragging her brother away from school or work to attend something as insignificant as her parent-teacher meetings would’ve only made her feel worse. She couldn’t keep relying on him for everything, though she knew her teacher wouldn’t be very happy about yet another missed meeting, and Jieun was running out of excuses.
The sound of the classroom door sliding open made her jump. Jieun stood up straight, shoulders tense as her teacher stepped out of the classroom with a notebook in hand.
“Ah, yes, Jieun,” she said, catching sight of the girl. She watched as her teacher’s eyebrows furrowed, looking around the hallway. “You said that your older brother was coming, didn’t you?”
Jieun stared at her blankly, though quickly broke out of her trance and gave a brief nod.
“My brother…” she trailed, glancing over her shoulder. “He’s coming. He’s just- uh, he’s running a bit late.”
Her teacher glanced up at the clock, a small sigh escaping him as she flipped through her notebook, writing something down.
“Do you have a rough idea of when he’ll be arriving?” she asked, a slight sharpness in her tone. “I have many other appointments today.”
Jieun chewed on her lower lip, eyes moving to the ground. She remained quiet for a short period of time, searching through her mind for any possible excuse she could use to explain her brother’s absence. Finding nothing, she took in a deep breath and closed her eyes, about to confess when a voice behind her sounded first.
“Sorry I’m late! Traffic was heavier than expected.”
Her head snapped up, looking over her shoulder to the source of the voice. Jieun’s eyes widened as she spotted Yunho’s tall figure making his way down the hall. The boy was fully dressed in a suit, his hair neatly combed and styled, walking in long strides before eventually stopping beside her.
Yunho smiled at her teacher as he extended his hand. “You must be Ms. Yoon. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
For the first time ever, Jieun saw a smile spread across her teacher’s face as she accepted Yunho’s handshake, bowing forward slightly.
“And you must be Jieun’s older brother,” she greeted. “The pleasure is all mine. Shall we start the meeting?”
As though he were used to the routine, Yunho immediately followed her teacher into the classroom, Jieun trailing behind after processing what had just happened. She took a seat beside Yunho at the teacher’s desk in silence. While her teacher rummaged through some of her cabinets, Jieun took the opportunity to lean over and whisper into Yunho’s ear, covering her mouth with her hand.
“What are you doing here?”
“What does it look like? I’m here for your parent-teacher meeting.”
The two sat up straight as her teacher opened what was presumably Jieun’s file. Her eyes scanned over the document for a couple seconds before she looked up, turning toward Yunho.
“It’s clear that Jieun is a very strong student. She excels on all of her exams and big projects, typically exceeding expectations and gaining full marks.”
Jieun’s eyes widened at the sudden praise, heat rising to her cheeks as Yunho glanced over at her with a fond smile, gently nudging the girl with his elbow. Before either of them could say anything, however, her teacher spoke up again.
“However, Jieun rarely completes her daily homework checks and often turns in her smaller assignments late,” her teacher said. Jieun could practically feel the disappointment radiating off of her. “These small assignments may not be worth as much as exams, but they add up over time. Furthermore, it indicates a lack of consistency in her work habits that may negatively impact her in the future.”
She could feel the two sets of eyes on her, though Jieun’s gaze remained on her lap as she played with her thumbs.
“I understand that you are training to be an idol?” She didn’t verbally respond, simply giving a small nod while continuing to avoid her teacher’s gaze. “The information you learn may not pertain to your chosen career path, but the skills and work habits you gain from consistently doing your homework can be transferred into any field, even if it’s not academic. These assignments teach you about discipline and consistent effort. I hope to see improvements in this area in the future, Jieun.”
Jieun continued to stay quiet, glancing up at her teacher for a moment before looking back down and nodding.
“Is Jieun currently living with you?” her teacher asked, turning her attention to Yunho. The boy nodded seriously.
“Yes, she is currently living with me.”
Her teacher quickly wrote something down in her notebook. “It’s really better if Jieun herself takes initiative in her school work, but if there’s any instance where she needs a bit of reminding-”
“I’ll be sure to be there when she needs me,” Yunho finished, a smile on his face as he gave a reassuring nod.
Satisfied, her teacher noted one more thing down before placing her pen on the desk, clasping her hands together as she turned her attention back toward Jieun.
“Jieun, would it be alright if your brother and I talk privately for a little bit?”
The girl nodded as she stood up. She gave a small bow to her teacher, still avoiding eye contact before turning around and walking toward the exit of the classroom.
Closing the door behind her, Jieun leaned back against the wall and let out a huge exhale. She looked over her shoulder, peering through the window of the classroom to see Yunho and her teacher in the middle of conversation. The boy seemed comfortable, too comfortable considering he was quite literally committing a crime.
Turning away, Jieun pulled out her phone to check if she’d received any messages. There were a couple from her group chat with the other trainees, one from her mom, though the most recent message came from none other than her actual brother.
Yerin-unnie’s boyfriend: Eun-ah, don’t forget to take your meds
Yerin-unnie’s boyfriend: Yerin says she misses you btw
A soft chuckle escaped Jieun’s lips as she typed out a response.
Me: tell her i miss her too
Jieun quickly turned her phone off before slipping it back into her pocket. She closed her eyes and crossed her arms, enjoying the peace and quiet of the hallway. A group practice was scheduled right after the meeting was supposed to end, so Jieun took the time she had to relax before she’d be thrust right back into the loud and chaotic environment that the practice room often provided.
She wasn’t sure how long she’d been standing there, though the sound of the door sliding open broke Jieun out of her relaxed state. Blinking, she turned toward the door to see Yunho stepping back out into the hallway, turning to her with a smile.
“That went well,” he commented, gesturing toward her. “C’mon, we have to get to practice.”
Yunho waited for her to catch up before he started walking, the two making their way out of the school together. It wasn’t until they were well away from the classroom and her teacher that Jieun spoke up.
“How did you find out about my parent-teacher meeting?” she asked curiously.
The older boy glanced down at her, letting out a small chuckle.
“You left the sign-up form on the kitchen table a couple days ago,” he explained. “There was no name written down, and I remembered you mentioning that Jihoon was busy for the next couple weeks because of an internship he was doing, so I put two and two together.”
Despite still being dumbfounded by the whole situation, Jieun slowly nodded as they approached the bus stop.
“And you…bought a suit to make a good impression…?”
He laughed, shaking his head.
“I borrowed it from my dad. Told him it was for a performance.”
“You’re a good actor,” Jieun said, giggling slightly. “I think you made a good impression. I’ve never seen my teacher smile like that.”
Yunho gave a small side shrug, trying to act nonchalant, though it was clear his ego was ever so slightly boosted by the compliment.
“We should hurry though,” he said. “Don’t want to keep the others waiting now, do we?”
Conveniently, the bus pulled up to the stop shortly after he spoke, stopping in front of the two. Jieun boarded first, tapping her bus card before walking toward the middle of the bus and sitting in an empty seat with Yunho following close behind. She stared at her reflection in the window as the bus took off, a small sigh escaping her lips.
Eventually, Jieun’s gaze shifted toward Yunho’s reflection, the boy turned the other way as he watched the moving traffic.
“Oppa?” she spoke softly, though the older boy immediately looked toward her. His eyebrows raised slightly as he gave a small hum. The corners of Jieun’s mouth tilted upward in a small smile. “Thanks.”
Yunho blinked at her, his mind taking a moment to register what she meant before his own smile spread. He chuckled, ruffling her hair gently.
“Like I said in the meeting, Eunnie: I’ll be there when you need me.” He shifted to sit slightly closer. “You can take a nap on my shoulder if you want. I’ll wake you up when we’re at our stop.”
Jieun hesitated for a moment, though after looking up at the boy and seeing his warm gaze, she accepted his offer and rested her head on his shoulder. Closing her eyes, Jieun allowed herself to relax as the bus continued to move, knowing Yunho fully meant everything he said.
Tumblr media
BONUS #1:
Jieun and Yunho stepped into the practice room together, where the other trainees were already warming up.
The first to notice them was San, who greeted the two with a smile as he waved from the corner where he was sitting.
“Hi Eunnie, Yunho!”
Jieun smiled as she waved back at the boy while the other members turned toward the two. One by one, she watched as confused expressions crossed each of their faces as they took in the older boy’s outfit.
“Sorry for being late-” Yunho attempted to apologize, though was quickly cut off by Mingi.
“Why are you wearing a suit?”
Without missing a beat, Jieun looked over at Mingi with a completely neutral expression as she spoke.
“Yunho-oppa committed identity theft.”
The initial confusion from the members mixed with curiosity and questioning as they turned toward the aforementioned boy, who looked toward Jieun with a look of betrayal.
“You did what?” Hongjoong asked, crossing his arms as he looked at the boy with a stern expression.
“Yunho-oppa came to my school and pretended to be Jihoon for my parent-teacher meetings,” Jieun explained bluntly.
“In my defense, your teacher only asked if I was your older brother,” Yunho said, raising his hands in the air. “I just never specified which one.”
This earned a few snickers from the younger members, the only person in the room not amused by the story being their leader, who face-palmed as he shook his head.
Seonghwa shrugged, nudging his friend. "You know, he’s technically right.”
“Please don’t entertain them,” Hongjoong said, rubbing his temples. After a few moments of what seemed to be contemplating his life choices, the older boy eventually let out a sigh. “Just get changed, guys. We’ll start when you’re back.”
The two nodded as they moved to leave, though before doing so, Yunho reached over and ruffled the girl’s hair for the second time that day. He did it rougher than before, purposefully trying to mess up her hair as she swatted his hands away.
The other members watched in amusement as Jieun made her escape, running out of the room with Yunho following close behind.
Tumblr media
BONUS #2:
Yunho glanced over his shoulder, watching as Jieun swiftly exited the room. Once the door was closed, he turned back to her teacher with a serious expression, trying his best to hide his nervousness as she wrote something down.
After a moment of silence, Jieun’s teacher put the pen down. Her gaze moved to the exit, landing on the small portion of Jieun’s head that could be seen through the classroom windows. She let out a sigh as she turned back to Yunho.
“I know that she’s an idol trainee and doesn’t have much time to connect with her peers outside of school, but even during school hours, I rarely see her with other people.” The boy’s eyebrows raised slightly, though he opted to continue listening. “She’s always off by herself in her own world. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least a little concerned for her social development.”
Yunho slowly nodded as he contemplated his response.
“Jieun has always been a really shy person,” he admitted with a small chuckle. “It took her weeks to start talking to m- her fellow trainees, as I was told.”
“My apologies if this is too intruding, but would you happen to know what her relationship with the other trainees is like?” Jieun’s teacher asked. “She does lack social interactions at school, but it would ease my worries to know she is at least maintaining healthy friendships amongst people her age elsewhere.”
Once again, Yunho was slow to respond, carefully picking each word before he answered her question.
“The other trainees are generally around the same age. Jieun is the youngest, but the age gap is no more than three years from the older members. She was actually the second trainee to join the company and originally had a reputation for being cold and unfriendly.” The corners of his mouth tilted upwards into a small smile. “Though eventually, everyone realized that her reputation didn’t truly represent who she was as a person. She’d help the new trainees when they were learning and quietly cheer everyone on from the sidelines, so it didn’t take long for people to figure out that she wasn’t who they originally thought she was.
She’s one of the trainees who have had the most improvement during her time at the company. Her fellow trainees adore her and they all want her to succeed. If I had to describe her, I would say that she’s the beating heart of the team.”
Realizing he was rambling, Yunho cut himself off as heat rose to his face. He cleared his throat, nodding.
“But anyways, I don’t think you need to worry about her friendships regarding her fellow trainees.”
Jieun’s teacher nodded in agreement.
“It’s clear that Jieun receives a lot of love and support in her trainee company,” she said. A smirk crossed the teacher’s face as she leaned back in her chair. “Considering how one of them would go to the lengths of impersonating her brother to attend her parent-teacher conference.”
Yunho’s smile dropped as his eyes widened. He opened his mouth to splutter out a response, though Jieun’s teacher simply raised her hand to silence him.
“Don’t worry, I won’t report this to administration,” she said, chuckling. “The main goal of these meetings is to give updates about the student’s progress to their closest family, and you clearly seem to be similar enough.” Jieun’s teacher picked up her pen, pointing to Yunho’s chest. “Though next time, maybe don’t forget to take off your ID card, Mr. Jeong.”
Yunho looked down, face flushing when he noticed the card he’d forgotten to take off his jacket, displaying his picture and full name. He quickly pulled the card off, stuffing it inside his pocket.
“Everything I said about Jieun was true today. She’s a very bright student, but everyone needs help sometimes, and I hope you’ll be there for her when she does.”
Yunho nodded firmly, making direct eye contact with her. “You have my word.”
Jieun’s teacher smiled as she extended her arm, which Yunho instantly accepted as they shook hands. After saying a brief goodbye, he turned and started making his way out of the classroom, the previous words echoing in the back of his mind. His word might not have meant a lot, but he’d do his best regardless to stay true to the promise he’d made and prove he meant what he said.

Jieun stared out the window of the car, watching as buildings came and went. The car ride was silent, as they usually were when all four members of her family were together.
“What do you want when we get to the restaurant, Jieunie?” Jieun’s mom eventually asked, trying to alleviate some of the unspoken tension. The girl looked over, making eye contact with her mom. She simply shrugged and gave a short hum before turning her gaze back to the outside world.
“Let’s listen to some music,” her dad suggested, reaching over to turn on the radio. As the sound of music filled the air, Jieun let out a sigh. She closed her eyes, softly humming along to the song currently playing.
As the song came to a close, the intro of Twice’s “Like OOH-AHH” began playing through the speakers. It only played for a few seconds before the song was abruptly cut off as her mom changed the radio station. Jieun opened her eyes, looking over at her parents in confusion as her mom continued cycling through radio stations.
“Why’d you change it?” she asked. “I like that song.” Jieun’s dad glanced at her for a split moment through the rearview mirror, while her mom avoided her gaze entirely.
“We just thought you wouldn’t want to listen to it…”
Jieun frowned. “Why?”
They didn’t answer, causing the girl to let out an audible sigh. Beside her, Jihoon gave her a pointed look, silently telling her to just drop the topic. Jieun nodded once, shifting in her seat slightly before turning back to the window.
The rest of the car ride was silent.
-
“The snow’s really coming down now,” Jieun’s mom commented, a hint of worry in her voice. “I hope everyone will be safe on the roads. Accidents could easily happen with this much snow.”
Jieun and Jihoon didn’t respond, continuing to eat their meals in silence. Jieun’s dad, however, answered their mom’s audible concern.
“Most people should be at home with their families anyway, or on vacation,” he reasoned before turning his attention to Jieun. “Jieunie, how do you like the food?” She spared a small glance over at him and nodded.
“It’s good. Thank you for bringing us here.”
“Of course, anything for our Jieunie~” her mom sang. Jieun glanced over at Jihoon, who hid his smile as he looked back down at his food. “You know, your dad and I used to come here all the time when we were young-” She was cut off by a sudden beeping noise that rang through the restaurant, coming from both her and their dad’s pockets. The sound was all too familiar, so were the guilty expressions on Jieun’s parents’ faces when they checked their pagers.
Her parents exchanged a glance before Jieun’s dad stood up. He smiled at the two siblings, waving them off.
“I just need to take a quick call. I’ll be right back.”
Jieun felt something in her stomach drop when her dad walked away, phone in hand. Her gaze followed him to the door as he stepped outside, not sparing a glance back.
“I was thinking,” Jieun’s mom said, trying to distract her, “when we get home later, let’s rewatch that favourite movie of yours. Mamma Mia, right? We can get some snacks later too.”
Before Jieun could respond, her dad suddenly reappeared at the table. He leaned down, whispering something into her mom’s ear that made her smile falter. This only lasted for a few seconds, however, before Jieun’s mom plastered a smile onto her face. Jieun could see how strained it was as she met her mom’s apologetic gaze.
“Jieunie, I’m so sorry, but your dad and I need to go to the hospital,” she said, reaching over to tuck a piece of hair behind Jieun’s ear. “There’s been an accident on the highway and they need all hands on deck.”
Jieun stared at her parents with a blank expression, silence drawing out for an uncomfortably long time. Eventually, however, the girl gave a small nod, her gaze falling to her lap.
“It’s ok. Go save lives.”
Her parents’ shoulders loosened almost instantly. Jieun’s dad opened his wallet and handed his card to her older brother, while her mother got up from her seat and put on her coat. She leaned over and pressed a kiss to Jieun’s head, whispering a small “i’m sorry” into her hair.
“I’m so sorry, Jieunie,” her dad said, also giving her a quick kiss on the forehead. “We’ll celebrate again later, yeah?” Jieun nodded and gave her parents a strained smile.
“Yeah, we can.”
With that, her parents uttered one final “sorry” before hurriedly exited the restaurant, leaving the two siblings sitting in silence. Jieun stared down at the food in front of her, appetite suddenly non-existent.
“Hey, Eun.” She looked over at Jihoon, who held a sympathetic smile. “You wanna get takeout boxes? We can get some ice cream at the convenience store down the street.”
Jieun nodded, though said nothing as she returned her gaze back to all the half-eaten food on the table. She remained silent even as Jihoon called over a waiter to get their bill, all the way until they got to the convenience store.
“Shake yourself off before we go inside,” Jihoon reminded her, both siblings completely covered in snow.
Once they were (mostly) clean, Jieun walked through the automatic doors and started making her way to the ice cream section. Jihoon followed behind, though he soon stopped and called out,
“You go pick something for both of us, I’m going to look around for a bit.”
She looked over her shoulder, watching as Jihoon walked into one of the aisles, his head poking over the top. Although curious, Jieun turned around and made her way to the ice cream section. Her gaze scanned over the various ice creams before she opened the fridge and grabbed two ice cream cones.
“Ice cream? In this weather?” The sudden voice made her pause mid-motion, head snapping up like a deer in headlights. Jieun was met with the sight of a young woman, maybe in her mid-20’s, with dyed brown hair and an amused smile.
“Oh, uh,” Jieun hesitated, glancing down at the ice cream in her hand. “I just wanted ice cream.”
The woman chuckled and nodded at her, “Nothing wrong with ice cream.”
Although confused by the sudden switch up, Jieun nodded and closed the freezer door. Before she could leave, however, the woman spoke up again.
“Are you still looking to be a singer?” she asked. Jieun stared at her, pure confusion in her gaze. The woman, realizing her cryptidness, bowed her head slightly. “Ah, sorry. I’m being creepy right?” Without waiting for an answer, she went on. “I’m from this company called Seven Seasons. You know Block B, right?”
Jieun nodded, though her eyes remained glued to the card in the woman’s hand.
“My brother likes them.” This made the woman smile.
“That’s great! I like them too,” she responded. “But anyways, we’re looking to expand the company and start bringing in more trainees. I know you got eliminated from Sixteen, but if you’re still thinking of becoming a singer, I really think that the company could help you achieve that dream!”
The woman handed Jieun the card that she’d been holding onto since the start of the conversation. Although hesitant, she took the card from the woman’s hand, bringing it closer to inspect it. Just from the information on it and the format of the card, it looked like a legitimate business card.
“You have really big potential, Jieun,” the woman said. Jieun didn’t look up, her eyes locked on the business card. “The company has in-house producers and mentors that could help you grow. It would be great if you joined.” She looked down at her watch, eyebrows raising. “I have to head to a meeting now, but if you’re interested, just give that number a call and we can sort it out.”
Without missing a beat, the woman turned and walked out of the convenience store, leaving a stunned Jieun standing there.
“What just happened?” she muttered, staring at the card in hand. Jieun was so focused on it that she didn’t notice Jihoon walk up to her.
“Hey, did you choose?” he asked, stopping beside her. She looked up at him as she pocketed the card, nodding. Jihoon looked down at the ice cream in hand and smiled. “Taxi should be here in a minute or two. Let’s go pay.”
“What’s in the bag?” Jieun glanced down at the plastic bag in his hand as they made their way over to the cashier. She placed the ice cream on the counter as Jihoon shrugged.
“Secret.”
Jieun rolled her eyes at her brother, though she didn’t ask any more questions as Jihoon pulled out their dad’s card to pay. After a slightly confused look from the cashier, the two took their ice cream and started towards the exit, where the taxi was already waiting.
By the time the two siblings got home, the sun had already begun to set. Jieun slipped her shoes off, shivering as she walked into the freezing apartment.
“Go get changed into your pajamas and then meet me in the kitchen,” Jihoon told her. Jieun nodded in response before making her way to her bedroom.
She quickly changed out of her clothes and into a matching pajama set, throwing her clothes on her chair before walking downstairs. Jihoon was waiting for her at the kitchen island, already dressed in his pajamas and holding the plastic bag he had earlier. Jieun took a seat on one of the stools, leaning against the counter.
“Will you tell me what’s in the bag now?”
A grin spread across her older brother’s face as he set the bag on the counter.
“I thought-” Jihoon began taking out items one by one, revealing baking powder, sugar, food dye, and other similar ingredients. “Since we didn’t get you a cake yet, we should make one!”
Jieun stared at him skeptically, thinking back to the last time they’d tried to bake something. No matter how many good grades the two siblings earned, it seemed like it didn’t apply to real life situations. Jihoon swore he followed the recipe exactly, but the brownies they made still somehow ended up like rocks by the end.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Jihoon said with a frown.
“Is it going to be like last time?”
“It’ll be nothing like last time! Trust me, we’ll make a perfect cake.” He turned around and began rummaging through their cupboards, though struggled to find what he was looking for. “Now where are the mixing bowls…?”
Sighing, she jumped off her seat and walked over to him. While Jihoon continued looking through every cabinet, Jieun opened one on the bottom and pulled out a large metal bowl. She held it up to him, one eyebrow raised. Jihoon turned to her and with a sheepish grin, took the bowl from her hand. He held up one fist to her. Jieun stared at his outstretched hand for a few seconds, though she eventually let out a small sigh and met his fist-bump. Jihoon smiled at her.
“We got this!”
-
“Mamma Mia again?” Jihoon asked as he walked into the living room, taking a seat beside her on the couch. “Share the blanket, dude.”
“Here-” she shifted so that he could slip under the blanket too. “And of course, Mamma Mia again. How could I abandon my Greek dream?” Jieun reached for her plate that had been resting on the coffee table. She took a bite and chewed happily.
After getting eggshells into the batter three times, spilling milk all over the counter, setting off the fire alarm once, and nearly using salt instead of sugar, they’d somehow managed to create a cake that was actually edible. Although the presentation was a bit lackluster (she told Jihoon to be careful of crumbs in the icing. Did he listen? No, he did not.), the cake still tasted good and would (probably) not give them food poisoning in the future. Jihoon even pulled up a picture of a candle on his phone to use in place of a real one (after the fire alarm went off he wasn’t taking any chances).
The movie continued playing, both siblings singing along to the lyrics when the musical sequences came on.
“You know mom and dad would be here if they could,” Jihoon said out of the blue, quickly glancing over at her. She stopped mid-bite, putting down her fork.
“Yeah, I know.” Although she tried remaining stoic, it was clear to Jihoon that she was upset at their parent’s absence. Anyone else might’ve seen her expression and believed she was unbothered, but Jihoon could always tell when something was upsetting his sister. She both loved and hated him for it.
“It’s just-” Jieun lets out a small huff. “They’re literally out there saving lives. How can I be upset?”
“Just because they’re saving lives doesn’t mean that your life isn’t important too,” Jihoon pointed out. “You deserve to have our parents here to celebrate your birthday.”
She looked over at him and raised her eyebrows pointedly.
“They missed your birthday too.”
Jihoon’s mouth pressed into a straight line as he stared at her. After a few seconds of silence, he took another bite of his cake.
“It’ll be ok,” he eventually responded. “We have each other, and that’s all that matters. As long as I’m here, you won’t spend a birthday alone.”
A small smile made its way onto Jieun’s face, which she tried to hide by taking a bite of her cake. She gave a single nod and looked back at the screen.
“Thanks, oppa.”
Jihoon grinned before reaching over and ruffling her hair. She shoved him in the shoulder as a response.
“You’re so mean to me,” he pouted. Jieun spared him no glances.
“Deserved.”
With that, they continued watching the rest of the movie in silence, with the occasional laugh or side comment during certain parts of the movie.
As the ending credits began rolling, Jieun sat up on the couch and stretched her arms. She looked beside her, noticing Jihoon’s unconscious figure laying there and snoring softly. Rolling her eyes, Jieun brought herself to her feet, grabbing their now empty plates off of the coffee table and bringing them back to the kitchen to clean them.
Jieun placed everything into the sink before reaching into her pocket and pulling out the card that the woman had given to her earlier. Her eyes scanned over the information written, staring down at the phone number.
Her conversation with Jinyoung felt like forever ago, and with every day that passed, the more empty that promise was starting to feel. She didn’t even know if this company was real or not. There was a good chance that they were trying to scam her. Was that risk worth it? Best case scenario was that it was a real company and Jieun joined, eventually making her debut as an idol. Worst case scenario? She was recruited into a cult.
Jieun stuffed the card back into her pocket. She was thinking too hard about it. She turned on the faucet and ran her hands underneath the cold water. For now, all she had to focus on was cleaning up the dishes. She could worry about the (maybe) fake company tomorrow.
