Hey! I love your work so much. Just wanted to ask before I start watching Tribes and Empires, do you think the show - apart from being epic in scale, is much else? Is the story really compelling? I have heard many who say that its very slow and meandering. So I wanted to know your thoughts because we have the same taste?

ahh tysm for loving my work :3 as for ‘tribes and empires’, i have a lot of mixed feelings about the drama from what i’ve watched so far but i have only watched 24 eps at the moment so my opinions might change later. 

this is under a cut because apparently i have a lot of thoughts lol also there are a lot of run on sentences because it’s 3 in the morning as i’m answering this so i hope things are coherent.

spoilers!! warning: there are some spoilers but nothing too big i hope! 

so ngl, what drew me in originally was definitely its’ epic scale and the promise of beautiful cinematography, which the drama definitely delivers on. also the trailers were pretty amazing and sold me on the drama’s epic-ness really quickly. 

but the things you’ve mentioned in the ask are also true. the story is going at a pretty slow pace and tbh i think that’s one of the drama’s cons. like i loved watching the younger versions of the main characters but c’mon, it took them a whole 9 episodes before we got to their adult selves and for the main plot to really kick start. 

there’s also a lot of politic talk in the drama since there are different princes vying for the throne and unlike in ‘nirvana in fire’ where i found it very compelling to watch, for ‘tribes and empires’, this is when i’m most bored and tend to zone out a lot tbh. (but to be fair, i am very easily distractible and i’m always playing games on my phone as i watch things, which is terrible since the only thing i watch nowadays are dramas and that requires reading subs lmao)

one more thing is that i would have appreciated a bit more world building about the whole of the novoland universe. i know that the drama is an adaptation of only one of many books set in novoland but i think it would have helped me a lot more with understanding how the world the drama is set in functions if we got more background on the different species and the relationships between them as well. (altho this is probably just me being a nerd since i love knowing all the small details of fantasy worlds like novoland so tbh even if we did get more worldbuilding of novoland i don’t know if it would have had sped up the pace of the plot)

and while i’ve only talked about my nitpicks with ‘tribes and empires’ so far, there are things i do enjoy about the drama, which mainly are the characters and their relationships. i’m the type of person who don’t care for plot as much so the thing that keeps me watching are definitely characters and character development. 

i really like the three leads so far and their leading ladies. i especially love the bromance set up between muyun sheng and han jiang and my favorite couple is han jiang and su yu ning. (also han jiang is my fav of the three main leads lol) and i’m really excited to see how all the prophecies told to us at the beginning of the drama is going to affect all the relationships and give us great angst because i’m a sucker for good angst (despite how i can only take angst in small doses lol).

that aside, i really wish that they would develop the main ladies outside of just being love interests?? i haven’t met shoufeng heye’s leading lady in her adult form yet but from what i’ve watched of su yu ning and pan xi so far, the writing pretty much has their story revolve around muyun sheng and han jiang. i’m hoping that as the drama goes on, we’ll see better writing for the ladies. (ALSO WHAT THEY DID TO SHOUFENG HEYE’S WIFE IS TERRIBLE AND MADE ME REALLY ANGRY LIKE @WRITERS WTF WAS THAT NECESSARY) 

reading this over i realized i talked a lot about the negatives of this drama but i hope that i didn’t completely turn you off from giving it a try?? like there are parts of the story i find really compelling (and compelling enough for me to continue to commit to a 75 ep drama at the moment). so about whether or not you should start it, i’d say to try it out and tbh i think the pace of the story is slow enough that even if you zone out or end up skipping some parts, it’s still pretty easy to catch on to what’s happening in the story.
