What you are about to read is probably a bit weird, it's my attempt at making sense of the biological cycle of trolls.

Troll Biology for Wigglers

Trolls are a triploid species, with a triploid biological cycle. The mother grub (3n) releases eggs (n), if these are fertilised by combined troll slurry (they are absorbent, in the primitive times trolls probably had to jizz over them instead of using buckets), they hatch into trolls (2n). If they are not fertilised, however, a virgin mother grub (n) is born (along with all other kinds of lusii). 

A matriorb is made when a virgin mother grub eats a fertilised egg (2n) intact. At this point, the egg dissolves in the innards of the virgin mother grub and goes through a metamorphosis, into a matriorb (with the adding of the virgin mother grub’s gamete).

Queer theorisks also point out that the quadrant system which permits various concupiscent partners was probably a result of troll reproduction being based off of the mixing of a large quantity of a lot of trolls’ genetic material. This necessity to share that much genetic material and with so many people probably provided the necessity to have multiple partners.

The history of troll biology is incredibly obscure, as before meeting humanity, trolls didn’t see any value in preserving that kind of information or learning much about the past at all.

The Blood Colors: Chromochromosomes

The trolls and lusii, unlike humanity, don’t have sex chromosomes. Instead, they have chromochromosomes (on top of the 27 pairs of others).

Each troll has two chromochromosomes, one of them defines characteristics like blood saturation, horn shape and size, number of molts, height, etc. There is only one variety of this chromosome, appointed chromosome V.

The second one has twelve different varieties, all according to blood hue, psionics, and other hue specific attributes, it also potentially modifies characteristics like horn size or general height reached. These twelve chromosomes recieve the subsequent names: Α (alpha), Δ (delta), Λ (lambda), Π (pi), Ι (iota), Υ (upsilon), Τ (tau), Ν (nu), Κ (kappa), Σ (sigma), Μ (mu), Χ (chi). [Order from warmest to coolest on the hemospectrum].

Kankri and Karkat’s mutation is caused by a trisomy in the chromochromosomes, wherein they have both the Χ and A chromosomes. This would be extremely controversial to discover, seeing as that basically turns the hemospectrum from a line into a circle, and makes the hierarchy seem even more pointless than it was.

Although not portrayed in the graph, both the mother grub and trolls release two types of gametes: those that have chromosome V (gV) and those that have a chromochromosome (gC). If there is one there isn't the other.

Lusii are born only from the gC, trolls occur when a gC egg and a gV gamete meet or vice versa. The mother grub is the result of a fertilized egg (VC) combined with a virgin mother grub's gamete (gC).

Wait... WE can read Greek?!

I was reading a wiki article about ancient artifacts when it shared some Greek words that were inscribed on the artifacts:

Of course, my first thought was that I obviously can't read that... but... I kept looking and realized that I could sort of read some of the greek, thanks to knowing certain greek words and letters, mostly from my scientific interests, but other places as well.

For instance, look at the second word: "ΤΑΥΡΟΣ" Spelled out: Tau-Alpha-Upsilon-Rho*-Omicron-Sigma = TAUROS. The bull, which you may recognize from astrology or from the mino-taur (minoan bull) of mythology.

(*There were a few letters that I was less familiar with: e.g. P = Rho. Basically it's an R without the bottom-right leg. Also remember that there are kind of three "O"s: Regular O = Omicron; Ω = Omega; Θ = Theta, which looks like an O but isn't)

Let's try the 4th word: "ΚΑΡΚΙΝΟΣ"

Kappa-Alpha-Rho-Kappa-Iota*-Nu-Omicron-Sigma = Karkinos = Crab.

(*The expression "not one iota" is bc the letter "i" began as one little tiny line or event a dot. e.g. In hebrew, the letter is known as "yud" and is the smallest and simplest letter. It looks like a comma.)

For those familiar with astrology, they may know this is also known as "cancer", and is the origin for the use of the medical condition as well. (You may have heard about certain foods being "carcinogenic" = carcin generating = cancer causing.)

(Why "crab" for "cancer"? - NPR: "...Hippocrates because he was around very early. And some time about 400 B.C., he was examining many cancer patients with what we'd call today end-stage cancer... And he applied the Greek word karkinos, which means crab. A lot of explanations, all of them equally wonderful and all of them equally difficult to prove, but why did he use that? And if you examine a tumor, if you actually feel malignant tumor, you'll note that it's hard as a rock. And so some have explained that it reminded him of the hard shell of a crab. But others have said it.. may have reminded him of the pain that a malignant tumor induces. It's much like the sharp pinch of a crab's claw. And an even better version is that it suggests the tenacity with which, you know, a crab bites you…")

Ok, next is the 5th word: ΛΕΩΝ: Lambda-Epsilon-Omega-Nu = Leon = Lion (I think this one is easy, but perhaps that's bc my name, Ari, means Lion.)

Next: "ΠΑΡΘΕΝΟΣ" Pi - Alpha - Rho - Theta - Epsilon - Nu - Omicron - Sigma = Parthenos = Virgin Again, astrology fans may recognize the word. Zoo fans may recognize the word from stories about lizards in zoos suddenly becoming pregnant on their own, known as "parthenogensis" - virgin birth. (Christians may recognize the word for similar reasons!) Or you may be familiar with the Parthenon, an ancient greek temple to Athena the "virgin/maiden goddess".

Two words later, #8: "ΣΚΟΡΠΙΟΣ" Sigma-Kappa-Omicron-Rho-Pi-Iota-Omicron-Sigma = Skorpios = Scorpion!

Next: "ΤΟΞΟΤΗΣ" - This one's a bit harder Tau-Omicron-Xi*-Omicron-Tau-Eta-Sigma (*That's a hard letter. There's also apparently a similar letter represented by "X")

= Toxotes. I wouldn't have recognized this as the word for "archer" (technically, "bow") but you may recognize the word as the root for "toxic", which I just learned is derived from the word for archer - either bc it harms like an arrow, or bc the arrows were dipped in poison, making them toxic arrows.)

Ok, let's jump to the last one: "ΙΧΘΥΕΣ" Iota-Chi-Theta-Upsilon-Epsilon-Sigma = Ichthyes

People who've played animal crossing, or maybe just love fish or biology, may recognize this as part of the word "ichthyology" - the study of fish.

By now you may have guessed that the ancient object was a calendar of sorts, and was here listing the various months with their astrological signs.

So it kind of blew my mind to realize that I can sort of read greek.

Clearly this doesn't mean that I can just open up ancient or modern greek texts and start translating - but, I'm a LOT closer to that for greek than for most other languages. And not just me, but all of us. Which is just amazing. If I opened a book in russian or japanese, I'd be totally lost. I can't read the alphabet and I have basically zero familiarity with russian or japanese root words. But as westerns who speak english and use mathematics that both largely evolved from/with greek sources, we are all a lot closer to this ancient language than we probably assumed.

Kinda puts a new perspective on the phrase, "it's all Greek to me".

Greek doesn't have the letter h, so when words start with a vowel, there is an accent to show either smooth breathing or rough breathing.

for example :

ó - rough breathing

ò - smooth breathing

when a word starts with rough breathing, it means it has a h in front of it.

when iota follows a long alpha, eta or omega, then it is written in miniature form underneath. This is called iota subscript

Present tense:

he/she/it - ει

we - ομεν

they - ουσι(ν)

The 3rd person plural form has a moveable nu at the end. This means that when the word after the verb starts with a vowel or if the verb is at the end of the sentence, then it has a nu at the end. If not, the ending is just ουσι.

Declensions

In greek, a nouns ending reflects its role in the sentence, or its case.

There are 4 cases in greek

nominative - the subject

Accusative - the object (also used for expressing time, and certain prepositions)

Genitive - possession and some prepositions

Dative - to or for and also for some prepositions

The (main) endings for first declension are as follows

Enigma fuckin really? They couldn't even stick to the Greek alphabet stuff? I dislike it on a worldbuilding, name consistency, and overall story structure kind of way. Incredible truly.

I have mixed thoughts on it alphabet wise because yeah if you're gonna make something that's 'more Alpha than an Alpha' then what letter do you use?

Obvs Alpha and Omega were already chosen and used for the obvious reasons. Beta is built-in by now even if I've never seen a fic focus on them. I've seen Delta and Gamma thrown around on occasion as the author creates their own worldbuilding(the omegaverse is very much a sandbox where you can do whatever there's very few hard rules). God knows Sigma's in there somewhere now.

But what would be the More Alpha name? Eta? Upsilon? Kappa? You telling me you're gonna unrionically write 20,000 words about a Lambda?

Plot wise I think it's stupid but like. If you're writing the Omegaverse in the first place you're already way past cringe so I'm down for the over-powered nonsense that is an Enigma.

Just ranked the greek alphabet by how likely I am to use each letter in an omegaverse fic 💀

Ranking goes:

Alpha (Α α), beta (Β β), omega (Ω ω) (obviously)

Lambda (Λ λ), eta (Η η) (because they were my favourite in statistics in college and because there was ηd which was pronounced like "eat a D" and the omegaverse is so linked to smut that I couldn't not keep it)

All letters that were written out with two letters in english were ruled out because I hate two letter words, others were ruled out because they sound like slang words (e.g. Mu (Μ μ) which is pronounced Mew, and Sigma (Σ σ/ς) because duh) and some just because I didn't think they sounded like they could be an omegaverse secondary gender.
