Can I request Akira, Yu, Minato and Hamuko reactions to S/O having hanahaki disease? Like S/O likes protag but doesn't think they're good enough so they hide it and refuse treatment because they don't want to forget their precious feelings for them.
I have an old version of this ask where I went ham with the angst but I’m sparing y’all’s lives today. under the read more because I made them kinda lengthy
Minato
He’s caught them having bad coughing fits before and they seemed to be distancing themselves but whenever he brings it up in conversation they waved off his concerns. As much as he’s secretly disappointed with s/o’s aloofness Minato decides giving them space would be for the best, he doesn’t like when other people stick their noses where it doesn’t belong either.
It’s unfortunately because of this he doesn’t realize they have hanahaki disease until much later into the sickness. Minato finds out when he knocked on their dorm room to the response of a really loud cough. He lets himself in only to find flower petals scattered across the room, s/o’s back facing him. Not much context clues are needed for this, he’s not usually the confrontational kind but seeing s/o like this is just painful to watch.
He asks them why they haven’t confronted whoever they hold feelings towards, or better yet why they haven’t sought out treatment. When they answer that they don’t want to lose their feelings towards him, Minato is simultaneously pleasantly surprised and remarkably unimpressed. Calmly Minato reassures s/o that the feelings are requited, reasoning to them that he has no reason to lie so please for the love of god stop coughing up those petals and go out with me already.
Hamuko
Hamuko found out about s/o having hanahaki disease pretty early on. She’s patting their back after a particularly bad coughing fit when she caught them hack up a single flower from the corner of her eye. Her nosiness comes into play and she’s asking them out of concern about the whole affair. They don’t give her the details and it’s painful to think that her own love will go unrequited but Hamuko encourages s/o that she’s always on their side.
During school time she’s always catching up with s/o about their condition but they continue to be shifty about the subject. Hamuko thinks the worst case scenario happened and the person they have feelings for didn’t return their love. She frustrated and can’t help but think that whoever turned them down is an asshole.
Watching s/o becoming worse as time goes on pulls on Hamuko’s heartstrings and she begs them to put past hurt behind them and get treatment. Confused, s/o states that they haven’t put their feeling out yet and accidentally slips that she’s the one they love. Their cover up explaining their insecurities is muted out Hamuko’s own thoughts of wow I’m an idiot. S/o’s fumbling is interrupted by a teary-eyed hug from her as she confesses her own feelings.
Yu
Between his school work, part time jobs, taking care of the Dojima residence, and the TV world Yu’s life is a hectic mess to maintain. He doesn’t has much time in between everything for his friends and s/o but he tries so hard to make the best of it. During a walk around the school, he overhears a conversation between two students in a different class. Apparently s/o has been staying home more recently and there’s a rumor going around that someone walked in on them coughing up flower petals.
Yu decides to go over to their house after school to see if the rumors are true or not, he reasons that if they aren’t true he can at least stop people from spreading them. When he gets there they answer the door with a glum look to their face and suspicious petals scattered around. Nevertheless Yu politely ask them about their condition and is surprised to find it not only true but s/o’s assumed unrequited love is aimed at him. He retorts that the feelings are mutual but to his shock they wave it off, stating there’s no way someone as wonderful as Yu would love them that way. The door closes on him before he can get another word in.
S/o’s words keep repeating in Yu’s mind and it stresses him out. He loses some sleep that night over how he can get his genuine feeling across to someone who can’t hear them. Yu goes to his friends for advice, making sure to omit s/o’s condition for their sake. After a week of careful consideration and affectionate actions in between his busy schedule, he steels his conviction and confronts s/o again with the grandest and most genuine confession he can think up. He gets worried it didn’t work when they cough but it turns up flowerless. Realizing what this means Yu pulls them into a tight embrace thanking them for understanding his true feelings.
Akira
Nothing gets pass Akira’s keen perception and he already knew s/o had feelings for him. They’ve been on casual dates together but neither of them directly put their feelings out in the open. Akira doesn’t see the need to put a definition on the relationship yet if they don’t feel comfortable to, s/o likes Akira and he likes them back and that’s fine with him.
He is utterly baffled when he caught s/o coughing up petals in the middle of their date. Akira interrogates them suddenly doubtful, but they give it all up and confess their feeling definitively. That only confuses Akira more though as he points out that he returns the affection so what was the problem? There’s this eerie look to their empty smile as they try to assure him that he doesn’t need to pretend to like them if he doesn’t want to.
What’s that suppose to mean? Akira thinks. He’s a bit offended that they seem to think his affection for them was all sympathetic, but it’s not about him right now. Akira starts pointing contradictions in their line of thinking, s/o seems so adamant in believing what they have can’t be real though. His patience is running thin when this goes on for an hour and he suddenly takes their hands in his, kissing them. Akira looks up at their reddened face with a sharpness in his eyes and says, “you seem to think taking my heart is a light offence you can wave off. Seems I’ll need to teach you otherwise.”
