Alright my essay on the physics of Storm Bringer is done… for a certain interpretation of done. I wanted to get it to the people who actually want to read it since it’s not just for me, but I’m not totally happy with it and I didn’t cover everything I wanted to. I may post a continuation of it at some point but I’m not sure when, and it will likely not be in essay format.
Anyway here it is:

would yosano’s ability work on corruption? since its a near-death situation… but like would it return him back to chuuya or would it be like activating corruption again? well. ok would it work is the first question

atsushi, definitely not driven by vengeance, grabbing the singularity's neck (akutagawa death #1) and slicing his head in half (akutagawa death #2)
i know what you are

yall is wanting sskk to reunite with gently pressing their foreheads together or staring into eachothers eyes (AND akutagawas eyes are light because his ordeal is back) too much to ask for. asagiri i will pay you to get them to have a whole panel of them homoerotically staring at eachother when they see eachother again

I like this pattern in the BSD plot where soukoku fight the penultimate villain and then shin soukoku fight the ultimate villain.
Guild Arc: Soukoku fight Lovecraft, and then shin soukoku fight Fitzgerald.
Dead Apple: Soukoku fight the dragon singularity, and then shin soukoku fight the Shibusawa singularity.
Meursault/Airport Arc: Soukoku fight Fyodor, and then shin soukoku fight the tripolar singularity (created by Fyodor).
Really vibes with that "shin soukoku" is the next generation concept.

Actually I take it back there is a solution in which the second part of Chuuya’s ability is purely gravity control. Because i was saying he’s opening a worm hole, right? Well wormholes are created by using gravity to warp the fabric of spacetime. And theoretical wormholes would therefore need to be supermassive and the theory that a black hole’s singularity is actually a wormhole is still in question. So. What could also be happening is that Chuuya is creating a wormhole by exponentially increasing the gravity of a single object within a secondary layer of spacetime created by his ability so that it doesn’t affect his own surroundings but instead warps the fabric of that artificial layer of spacetime. Which if I was the one writing this would mean that Chuuya has his own personal pocket dimension that is useless for anything but annihilation. And that’s Arahabaki. A singularity sealed inside a pocket dimension full of antimatter. The seal that’s talked about, the “gate” Verlaine opens, is just the first part of his ability.
To sum it up better, For the Tainted Sorrow is like a combination of 2 abilities, the first is pocket dimension/reality layering and the second is gravity control. Corruption is the Singularity itself stored within the first part of For the Tainted Sorrow that Chuuya is unable to consciously access. I’m not entirely sure how to think about the Singularity itself because it’s been a while since I read the part of Storm Bringer that really explains it. I can’t really remember if Chuuya’s ability was originally the one that enhances other abilities applied to itself exponentially or if that was someone else and the resulting singularity was transferred to him or if that was a totally different test subject or something entirely different. But from what we know about Singularities in BSD they’re usually a combination of two skills interacting with each other. So my understanding of project Arahabaki is that one or both of the two skills that make up For the Tainted Sorrow, reality layering and gravity control, were artificially transferred to Chuuya. Both skills also operate on 2 levels, conscious and unconscious. Consciously Chuuya can envelop an object in a layer of reality he controls and can then, also consciously, manipulate gravity within that layer of reality. Unconsciously, Chuuya has a wormhole in which he shoved an exponentially powerful Singularity/Black Hole AND that wormhole is also housed within a separate layer of reality.
If he tried really hard I bet he could figure out how to consciously make wormholes, wouldn’t that be exciting?!
[EDIT: just want to say that this thread explains my thought process in real time as dove deeper down this mind boggling rabbit hole and I will later post a more comprehensive and revised version when I’m done. This one isn’t entirely accurate.]
So I’m rereading Storm Bringer and I just got to the first fight with Verlaine and I have some thoughts/commentary/issues.
To be clear I absolutely love this book and it is fantastically written. And this might be a translation issue or it might be a lack of research on Asagiri’s part, but the language used to describe Chuuya and Verlaine’s skills is just wrong. The biggest thing is the way it uses the word density. Density isn’t about gravity, has little to do with gravity. It’s a measure of mass, how close together molecules are. And if you increase density it doesn’t increase mass or gravity but would instead decrease volume. As in shrink. Increasing the density of a person would shrink them and probably hinder a lot of biological processes.
But something I find very interesting is the use of the word annihilation, which in this context if you’re familiar with quantum theory implies that the reaction created when Chuuya’s gate is opened has something to do with antimatter. Annihilation is the term for the reaction that occurs when antimatter comes into contact with matter, it releases huge amounts of energy in the form of gamma radiation. The use of the word gate is also quite interesting because it implies that there’s something on the other side. It’s almost as if Chuuya’s ability is its own pocket dimension. When Verlaine opens the gate just a hair heat and wind escape and Adam detects signs of annihilation happening on the other side. It actually lines up pretty well with what I know about antimatter.
I can’t help but think that Asagiri has also read Neil deGrasse Tyson’s essay “Antimatter Matters” in his book Death by Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries because he uses the example of Billiards in the essay to illustrate his thoughts about antimatter. It’s really funny actually, he wonders if a game of anti-pool would be the same as regular pool, if gravity would affect antimatter exactly the same as it does regular matter. But we don’t know because it’s nearly impossible to create antimatter, that’s what particle colliders do but the only way to keep your antimatter from annihilating is to keep it in an electromagnetic box that repels it before it can touch. But as soon as you create a stable atom with no electric charge that becomes useless. So anti-hydrogen has been created before but it can’t exist for more than an extremely small fraction of a second. Anyway I’m getting off track. Point is I started rereading this book because I read that essay and I will forever associate pool and physics with Storm Bringer and now I’m wondering if I’m crazy and drawing connections where none exist or if Chuuya’s ability is just that much more absolutely INSANE than we ever even imagined. Cause like… it’s super OP but at the same time gravity is like the weakest force.

i hate this drawing a lot but i’m trying to get out of my perfectionism mindset so i’m posting it anyways 😋
this is your reminder to be kind to yourself and your craft. not everything you make is going to be a masterpiece and bad art is still art! i’d rather make shit art than no art at all at the end of the day

I was talking to my sister about bsd and I told her that Dazai shouldn't even be able to use THE book because he would have to touch it and then his ability would activate and he wouldn't be able to use the book. And the only way for him to use it is if his ability would be deactivated aka someone else uses their ability to nullify his ability. In which case the said someone would touch them which Dazai nullifies their ability so long story short they create a singularity. And I was yapping about this and explaining singularities to her and crap and her answers? She said "Why does the fandom think so much? He just has to tell Atsushi what to write in the book and it's done."

just had an evil chuuya thought . abt how maybe one of the first times he uses corruption and his body is fuckin torn to shreds but not quite enough for yosano’s ability to take effect, so she has to bring him even closer to the edge of death only to realize that her ability doesn’t work on corruption and/or singularity based injuries . hate it

yeah so like i see shin soukoku as like dating romantically involved whatever but they never figure out THATS what theyre doing. your telling me a kid who was practically locked in a cage his entire life and who probably gets all his romance knowledge (if he got any) from the few moments he was able to read in his orphanages library knows how to date? your telling me the kid who grew up in the slums with likely zero knowledge of how romance really works who then proceeded to join the mafia knows how to date?? there is no way they figure out thats whats happening honestly i just think theyd maybe make out after missions after kissing once (and getting embarrassed theyre not that oblivious) and figuring out they liked it, and endlessly pine (with no full knowledge of how to resolve the romantic tension) while maybe going out for food when atsushi gets hungry after they finish a job 😭 basically there just ends up being no concrete label to their relationship, its just partners and thats what they see eachother as yk
