Getting a little bit further on this fake comic panel! Feels good to fine line some stuff, but oh boy, I have a LONG way to go on that background. As scribbled as it looks on the first panel so far, it took me well over an hour to do.

With a fantasy world, the main character will need a trusty steed to carry them across perilous landscapes and reaching far off lands. With a fantasy world, you could have horses… OR DINOSAURS. YEAHHHH!

I love the looks of Tenontosaurus and after learning that they think these things could travel long distances with running, I knew I had to use these as one of the main mounts in the story. You’ll have the scaly versions, and since the story for Blue will have changing seasons, I can have these grow hair. Did they in real life? Who cares, because in this fantasy world I can do that I want!

I am a person who loves flashy displays or manes on creatures, so I added some scribbles to include either hair, quills, or fur. Unsure yet. This was a practice for myself in seeing if I draw one, as well as playing with new brushes and trying different colors. It’s tough because I have always loved earthy shades, so patterns somehow always lean towards brown lol.

I’m doing an art raffle over the next 4-8 weeks where I pick participants with a random number generator and then draw their characters of choice. This one was tough for me since I am not use to drawing humanoids, but this was perfect practice for me. Now to work on my action poses lol

A very rough doodle of the big baddy of the story, Count Vascular!

Since the original idea came from a silly story I tried doing for a Visual Novek game jam, I picked vampiric Count Vascular as the name, because blood vessels… get it????? However, not the same feels like it’s sticking and it’s just the perfect bad guy name at the moment lol.

The Count is going to be a typical baddy. Wants to take over the kingdom with his army of the undead, capture and attack villages for food supplies and turning them into blood suckers, and capture the main love interest which begins the heroes journey. Typical 80s and 90s dark fantasy story. My favorite lol

These doodles are not what his final look will be, but I know his main “form” will be tall, slender, but strong and lean. He embraces his visceral curse with pride and will let others know that he is above them. He will then have a more werewolf-like form and then he will have a more monstrous form which I’m imagining will be a mix of wolf and bad with four arms and giant wings. Final boss form! The looks will change a lot until I get something I like, so enjoy this first pass!

The step-father/father-like figure of Blue, Dubán (Dub-awn). I might have to simplify his name to how it’s written, Dubawn, since a lot of text fonts don’t like accents for some reason. It means “little dark one” since he’s a deep blue/sorta purple. The main characters in this story are going to be shades of blue, while the main characters females will be shades of red. Stickin’ to the old school 80s and 90s JRPG fantasies of main characters having crazy hair colors lol

Dubán is a silent man who doesn’t say much, but always has a cold, stern look about him. Blue knows him as a caring man, with a bit of tough love thrown in. He talks more with facial expressions than he does with talking, and this was inspired by Link from Zelda. Strong but very quiet and doesn’t say much if he doesn’t have to. Actions speak louder than words. Dubán found Blue and took him in, caring for the young man and raising him to be strong, caring, smart, and independent. His past is left a mystery to Blue, but he knows is that his “dad” can fight. I can’t figure out if I’ll ever have a plot twist where it turn out Dubán is actually the father, so I’m purposefully leaving it ambiguous so that I don’t have to decide lol.

Dubán and a few other men in the village had once served in the King’s guard, but due to some mysterious circumstances, they no longer serve the kingdom and would rather live out their days in a peaceful village. Blue has asked numerous times but will get no answers from the old guard who wishes to forget the past… until the day where the past finally catches up to them.

Hopefully these doodles portray the personality of Dubán. I’m still not 100% sold on his color pattern, but it does have the dark fur and piercing amber eyes I was aiming for. I have a soft spot for the quiet, strong, and mysterious lol.

I have been without a proper drawing setup for years. I had a laptop that did basic work. During that time I decided to learn basic programming and eventually tried joining a NaNoWriMo Visual Novel game jam. I was playing the Legend of Zelda BotW and TotK games at the time, and my fiancé was playing old Fire Emblem game boy games. After then watching some clips of the Netflix animated adaption of Castlevania (that show ROCKS), I decided to try making an old school visual novel, where the main male character had blue hair and fought against the evil vampire lord to save his pink haired damsel in distress. The game was supposed to be 10-15 minutes long, but due to poor time constraints from working a terrible job, I was never able to enter. All I was able to draw was the version with the blue background over the weeks. I was only home long enough to eat, MAYBE draw for 15 minutes, and fall asleep.

Although I was never able to enter, the idea stuck with me and evolved over the next few years. Once I got a new job and things started looking up, I built a computer and was able to draw again!

This is Blue, the main character of a small comic project I would like to do someday called BlueBird, or Blue Bird… I’m unsure of how to write it out lol. The main character is the color blue, and he likes birds lol. The story starts with him as a kid growing up in a small village who encounters a life altering event, leading him and the gang to fight against the evil vampire lord and his minions. I’m doing these sketches to get me use to drawing again, since I feel like I lost some skills before my online disappearance.

The newest doodles I went with multiple shades of blue and I felt like I got lucky with coloring and drawing him like I imagined. I even tried taking a crack of how he will look as a child. He will be a lighter blue as a kid, but he gets darker with more defined patterns as he gets older. These doodles are to help me get back into drawing, so although rough, these feel great to do!

I’m using the Krita program to draw now, and it’s a really nice program!

These past few weeks have been very busy with my personal life, but during my free time I tried my hand at trying out a "proper" comic page. The style is allllll over the place, and some days were more frustrating than others, but this was excellent practice. This allowed me to try proportions and perspective, colors and shading, and backgrounds. Oh boy the backgrounds!

This is a random, I don't think cannon scene from the story I've been trying to develop called Blue Bird (name pending). It is a high fantasy epoch with old 80s and 90s JRPG themes such as Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, etc., with themes from Zelda and Castlevania. It started off as a NaNoWriMo event that I was never able to properly enter, of a character with blue hair saving his pink haired girlfriend from an evil vampire lord.

It's crazy how much the story had progressed lol. I want to make this a reality someday, but I have a looooooong way to go. At least I have the Count's face mostly down, and the little side muzzle lines I thought looked cool, looks like an evil mustache from the front and I am keeping it lol.

Getting a tiiiiiiiny bit further with this! I know the vampires in this story will have really striking, otherworldly eyes, while also looking very unnerving. I am not sure I conveyed it correctly, but it's a nice experiment! I'm also liking this fur pattern MUCH better on the Count. Tried a design where there's a white line to break up the monotony of the muzzle, but from the front I noticed it looks like a mustache. Perfect lol

Also changing up Duban's design a little bit, since I like some spots of the first pass I did. I'm still not 100% sold on it, but I do want the dark look to make him more grizzled and intimidating.

Trying to figure out paneling. I have a basic idea of where the speech bubbles will go, so let's see how it goes. I'm trying to figure out proper measurements for American comic panels so that I can get use to it. Trying to figure out how much margin and bleed space I need if I ever want to get the comic sent to print someday.

Taking a crack at comic page making as well as concept and anatomy practice. I both like and hate how I did Duban's sword stance, because it looks like he's at the ready but oh man, my arm can't figure out how to draw those arms at any other angle.

I just gotta remember, practice makes perfect!

A concept of a scene that I still don't have fleshed out yet, but Blue comes face to face with the bad guy of the story, Count Vascular. Duban leaps in and manages to end off the Count temporarily while Blue recovers.

This originally started as more concept doodles for the count's portrait in the bottom righthand corner, but before I knew it, I was overcome with an urge to at least attempt a comic page. I've been reading so many good stories on ComicFury where the artist's drawings get better and better as time goes on. It's very inspirational!

Ohhhhhh snap!

I feel like I’ve been stuck in a time capsule, and yet so much has happened over these past few years. I got engaged, moved states, got my own house, and just very recently I built my own computer! The old computer stopped working properly, and since the old hard drive for it was converted to Mac use only, I can’t use it on a Windows machine. Effectively, for now, all artwork is “lost” so I’m starting fresh.

I’ve been posting to DeviantArt, and I only just remembered my Tumblr. I’m planning to someday move on to other sites but we shall see. I’m also hoping to reconnect with some old friends! I’ve missed everyone!
