Miraculous AU - Chapter 41 - Deception and Honesty

“Here’s your room, Lila. I’m sorry there’s not much here. Your father didn’t give me much time-.”

“It’s perfect! Thank you.”

“Now, I need to head out. Will you be ok here on your own?”

“Of course, I will be. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I just worry with the recent attacks, dear. You’ll call me if something happens, right?”

“I will. Now, hurry on. You don’t want to be late, do you?”

The woman kissed Lila’s cheek and left.

A fox kwami materialized beside Lila. “The coast is clear.”

“Excellent. Are you ready?”

“Always.”

“Trixx, shroud.”

“Hey, Marc!” Marinette called out.

Marc paused and smiled. “Hey, Marinette!”

“Sorry I’m late.”

“You’re not. You’re just on time.”

“Well, late for being early.”

Marc giggled. “C’mon, let’s get some coffee. You look like you need it.”

Marinette nodded.

They headed to a nearby café and grabbed some coffee. They sat at a table by the window.

“Before I forget, here’s your sketchbook back.” Marc took the book out of his bag and handed it over.

“Thank you for looking after it. Still had a lot of room in this one.”

“I’m sorry it took so long to get back to you.”

“It’s fine. We’re both busy with our projects. Speaking of, how’s the comic coming with Nathaniel?”

“Not well. He’s making it impossible to work with him. All he wants to do is… well… not talk about the comic.”

“Do you know what’s on his mind?”

Marc shrank back. “I don’t think I should say.”

“Ok. I hope everything is ok with him.”

“I do too. So, how’s everything going in your life?”

“Exhausting.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Do you know about y’know?”

“Your double life? It’s a little obvious.”

“For once that’s a relief. Where do I start? It’s exhausting, obviously. And there’s stuff coming that we need to prepare for, and we’ve been preparing for it every night so far. For the first time I’m glad that school is all online. I don’t think I’d be able to do all this with school too. And what’s worse is I can’t spend any time with my boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend? You never told me you had a boyfriend.”

“Oh! Right. Yeah. Uh… there are reasons I haven’t announced it.”

“Can you tell me now?”

Marinette scratched her cheek. “Maybe later where it’s not so crowded.”

“Ok. Aside from your other life, how’re your projects going? I know you were working with Alya to set up a website.”

“That’s slowed down a little, but mostly because I’m designing outfits for the heroes for a gala that they’ll be attending. Oh, let me show you!”

Marinette pulled out a sketchpad and opened it. The first page was a dress for Ladybug. It was a gown with a red bodice and a full black skirt. The bodice was a sweetheart neckline with silver off the shoulder sleeves. On the skirt was fabric that resembled a ladybug shell as it parted before it took flight. Along the hem of the shell was sheer silver fabric that made Marc think of wings. Behind the back along the skirt was ladybug print fabric bunched up with wisps of red, black, and silver strands. To top it off, this Ladybug had her hair tied back in a low bun with the same wisp strands in her hair.

Marc listened to Marinette as she went into her design process. Something on the café TV caught his eye. When he looked over, he saw an emergency broadcast with footage of Ladybug. She ran along the rooftops and threw some kind of smoke bombs around. The bombs exploded into large splats of color wherever they landed.

“Marinette, look.”

Marinette stopped and looked up at the TV. “What the hell? Is that happening right now?”

“I… think so?”

Marinette shook her and headed over to the TV.

Marc stood to join, then paused. He felt something staring at him. He looked around and saw a strange cat outside. He tilted his head as he looked at it. It was the size of a housecat, but its ears and fur reminded him of a lynx. It stared at him with gleaming yellow eyes that shivers down his spine. He stared at the cat as he wondered if this was one of the kwamis. Alya had told him to be on the lookout for them. She also mentioned that they tend to approach holders as animals first. His heart raced at the idea. He could be a holder like the others. He could join them on their adventures and witness it all firsthand!

Marc looked at Marinette, then the cat. He held up a finger before he approached Marinette. “Hey, let’s get going. If Ladybug has snapped, we shouldn’t be out.”

Marinette blinked, then nodded. She grabbed her stuff and headed out with Marc. He took her hand and looked for the cat. He spotted it and followed it to a back alley.

“Here, you should be able to transform.”

Marinette squeezed Marc’s hand. “Make sure you get somewhere safe, ok?”

Marc opened his mouth but was cut off by a meow. They looked down at the cat. It didn’t look like a simple housecat, but a full-sized lynx.

Marinette’s eyes widened. “That’s a kwami, isn’t it?”

The lynx nodded and transformed into a lynx kwami.

Marc’s eyes sparkled. “Are you here for me?”

The kwami chuckled. “I don’t see any other unclaimed humans around here, do you?”

Marc shook his head. “What’s your name?”

“I am Luz, kwami of honesty.”

“I’m Marc Anciel. Pleased to meet you.”

“And I you. Are you ready to become a holder, Marc?”

�� “Yes, please!”

Luz smiled. “I like your enthusiasm. Here.” He held out a hand as a silver ring with a lynx head on it appeared.

Marc gasped and put it on his left pinky finger. “What can I do?”

“Three powers: a lesser, a greater, and a Miraculous. With Truth, your lesser power, those around you will be compelled to tell you the truth. Axiom, your greater power, you can perceive the whole truth of reality no matter how hidden or complex. Finally, your Miraculous, which is only usable with the fox, you both manipulate truths and lies. So, you can turn truths into lies and lies into truths.”

“What’s the price of that?” Marinette asked.

“That’s where it gets complicated. It’s not like you and the cat where it’s clear cut and dry. If something is changed to true, it’s no longer false. Same in reverse. It’s both a price and a favorable outcome. Most the time.”

Marinette frowned. “That sounds dangerous.”

“Miracles usually are. Besides, it can only be used with the fox and they’re currently running amok in your city, Ladybug.”

“The fox is?”

“That’s who’s running around with your image, Ladybug.”

“I can’t tell if that’s good or bad. On one hand, it’s not a monster, but on the other, it’s another holder.”

“It may not be that bad. They seemed to be causing harmless chaos.”

“Maybe so, but we should stop them. They are running around as me.”

“Can I join you?”

“Of course. Are you ready?”

Marc nodded. “How do I transform?”

“Say, ‘Luz, reveal.’ To de-transform, say ‘Luz, shroud.’”

Marc grinned. “Luz, reveal!”

Luz vanished into the ring and transformed Marc.

Marc’s clothes transformed into a brown turtleneck top, pants, knee high boots, and a high-collared tailcoat. A pair of bracers with a lynx head covered his forearms. His nails extended into cat-like claws. Silver armor covered the foot of his boots. Silver chains decorated his pants, coat, and top. A pair of lynx ears appeared as his hair turned brown and framed his face like a lynx. His green eyes turned luminous yellow, and his pupils mirrored a cat’s pupils. A belt appeared with a bag attached to it. He spun around as he looked at himself.

“What do we think? Be honest.”

“You look fantastic! Though you seem shorter.”

Marc laughed. “I’m not wearing platforms right now.”

Marinette looked down and laughed. “I never thought I’d see the day. How’s it feel?”

“Weird. Very weird, but I thought I’d try something different.”

“It looks good on you. What do you want to be called?”

Marc hummed. “How about… Sleuthlynx?”

“Sleuthlynx it is. Are you ready?”

Sleuthlynx nodded.

“Tikki, spots on.”

Nathalie moved through the house as she prepared the guest bedrooms. She listened to the news while she finished the bedroom arrangements. She laid out the bedding when the emergency broadcast. She stopped and watched it with a raised brow. Duusu crawled out from her jacket.

“The lynx is active,” Duusu said.

“What? When did it activate?”

“Just now. You know what that means, right?”

“No.”

“Oh! Look.”

The camera panned to a lynx boy and a different Ladybug.

“The fox is in the city.”

“The fox of deception?”

“The very one. Looks like they’re starting their chaos early. Oh, see!”

Nathalie watched the fake Ladybug throw a smoke bomb at Sleuthlynx and Ladybug. Sleuthlynx ran through the smoke unaffected. Ladybug coughed as she emerged covered in glitter.

Nathalie grimaced. “That’s never coming out.”

Duusu’s eyes widened. “Ooo! Shiny!”

Nathalie rolled her eyes and looked at the screen. Ladybug screamed and activated her Lucky Charm. She threw her yo-yo and it found its way to the fake Ladybug. It wrapped around the fake one. Ladybug pulled the string and brought the fake one right to her. Sleuthlynx approached and placed a hand on the fake one. The illusion faded away to reveal the fox. Nathalie’s eyes widened when she saw the fox holder.

The girl wore a sleeveless crop top that was white in the front and orange around the sides and back. Under her top was a short-sleeved dark orange crop top. Her shorts were the same pattern with a pair of belts around her hips. She wore brown cuffed knee-high boots with brown stockings that came to her lower thigh. Her arms were covered with gloves that came to her upper arm and bracers. A foxtail scarf was wrapped around her neck that fell past her knees. Her head was obscured by an orange hood with fox ears. Her face concealed by a fox mask.

“Now this one understood the assignment. Though Viper is a close second. I suppose Carapace too.”

Nathalie hushed Duusu as she listened to their exchange.

“Who are you? Why are you doing this?” Sleuthlynx asked.

“Would you believe me if I told you?” the fox asked.

“I don’t think you have much choice here,” Ladybug said.

The fox laughed. “There is always choice. I could choose to not say anything if I desired.

“Something tells me you won’t though,” Ladybug remarked.

“True. I mean, what’s the fun in silence? What’s the fun in any of this? Why not just let me go?”

“We aren’t letting you go anywhere,” Sleuthlynx said.

“Oh, what a shame. Though it could be worse.”

“How so?”

The fox leaned back and nuzzled her mask against Ladybug. “I could be held captive by a repulsive creature, but instead I get a lovely face like yours.”

Ladybug sneered. “Please stop.”

“But why? Aren’t we having fun? I know I am.”

Sleuthlynx and Ladybug glared at the fox.

“No. Well, how about a game? Everybody loves games.”

“We aren’t playing any of your games,” Ladybug said.

“No? How about a simple one? We all share our names. Though, I already know yours, little Bugaboo.”

Ladybug growled. “Don’t call me that.”

“Oh? Why not? Ladybug is so boring! Bugaboo so cute. Don’t you think so?”

“Not coming from you.”

“No? Oh! You probably like it coming from that little black kitten, don’t you? He sure is cute enough, I suppose. Not my type personally, but I’m sure he gets the job done.”

“Don’t bring him into this.”

“Come now, why not? Everyone loves a bit of gossip, don’t you? Especially us girls. I mean, what girl doesn’t love talking about their trashy partner?”

Ladybug’s face flushed. She gritted her teeth as her eye twitched.

“Enough of your games. Answer our questions,” Sleuthlynx said.

“And then what? You’ll let me go?”

“No.”

“Then I see no reason to answer your questions unless I get something in return.”

Sleuthlynx sighed. “I’m Sleuthlynx.”

“Oh! That’s cute. At least you’re more creative than Bugaboo here. So, little lynx, what are you investigating? It’s not me, is it? I’ve had lots of hounds on me, but never a lynx. I wonder if you can actually do your job unlike those others.”

“We’ll find out, won’t we?”

“Indeed. Well, this has been fun, but I should be going soon.”

“And what makes you think you’re going anywhere?” Ladybug asked.

Nathalie raised a brow when the fox tilted her head so the muzzle of the mask obscured Ladybug’s chin. The fox stood up as the spots on Ladybug’s suit faded to black. The fox jumped back and kicked Ladybug in the jaw. Ladybug staggered back and let go of her yo-yo string. Sleuthlynx moved to grab the fox, but the fox stepped out of the way and tripped Sleuthlynx. He yelped as he crashed into Ladybug. The fox trotted behind them, smoke bombs in each of her hand.

“I’m afraid I must say good-bye, darling Bugaboo. But this won’t be our last good-bye. I promise you that.”

The fox threw the bombs at her feet. Orange and white smoke enveloped Ladybug and Sleuthlynx. When the smoke cleared, the fox was gone.

Duusu chuckled. “If that doesn’t incite jealousy in Adrien, I don’t know what will.”

Nathalie rubbed her forehead. “I don’t want to think about that right now.”

“Why? Because he won’t realize it was all a play or you don’t want to think what comes with that?”

“Both. Always both.”

Nathalie’s phone rang. She looked at the caller ID and saw it was Gabriel. She groaned and answered it.

“Yes, sir?”

“Office. Now.”

“Yes, sir.”

Nathalie hung up and put her phone in her pocket. Duusu slid into her suit jacket as she made her way to Gabriel’s office.

Gabriel looked up from his tablet when he heard a knock. “Come in.”

Nathalie stepped into the room and shut the door. “You called.”

“I did. Did you see the news?”

“I saw the emergency broadcast, yes.”

“Excellent. Get a message out to my contacts. We need to make arrangements to meet with this fox holder. Papillon would love her.”

“Sir, is this a good idea? The fox is deception. She can’t be trusted.”

“It’s not about trust, Nathalie. It’s about a common goal.”

Nathalie sighed. “Very well. I’ll reach out and see what I can arrange.”

“Perfect. Oh, and one last thing. Keep an eye on the news, specifically tabloids and gossip magazines.”

“Why?”

Gabriel laughed and held up the tablet. “It seems you missed the best part. At least the part that’ll make ‘real’ news.”

Nathalie took the tablet and watched the clip. Sleuthlynx moved to help Ladybug when Chat came rushing in. Chat scooped up Ladybug, checked on her, nuzzled her, everything. Nathalie’s eye twitched as she returned the tablet to Gabriel.

“I thought you knew about this already?”

“I did, but it’s always good to get further confirmation. Besides, they’re going to love the ‘drama’ that comes out of this. Just imagine the headlines on the gossip magazines.”

“Do I really have to read that nonsense? It’s all usually lies.”

“Lies that everyone eats up. Directed towards the heroes no less. It’s perfect, don’t you think so?”

Nathalie sighed. “Yes, sir. I’ll keep my eye out.”

“Good. You’re dismissed.”

Nathalie nodded and left.

“Mend.”

Golden light wrapped around Ladybug’s jaw and healed her.

“How do you feel?” Viperion asked.

“Anger. Pain.”

“What happened?” Viperion looked to Ladybug and Sleuthlynx.

Ladybug crossed her arms. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“The fox holder is in town,” Sleuthlynx answered.

“Fox? Is it dangerous?” Viperion asked.

“More annoying than dangerous. She wouldn’t shut up,” Ladybug grumbled.

Souris snickered. “You played right into her hand, Bugaboo.”

Ladybug growled. “Don’t call me that!”

Chat’s ears pinned back. “Do you want me calling you that anymore?”

Ladybug grimaced. “Maybe not for a while, Kitty.”

“When did she call you that anyway?”

“Wait, how much of it did you see, Chat?” Souris asked.

“I saw up to when Sleuthlynx revealed it to be the fox.”

“You need to see the rest. You and Viperion.”

Souris stood, moved Chat away from Ladybug, and sat him beside Viperion. She handed them her phone and they watched the emergency broadcast. She couldn’t see much emotion from Viperion other than a frown, but Chat’s ears were pinned, his tail lashed, as he growled.

Souris turned to Ladybug. “So, I’m curious. When the fox girl leaned in at the end, did she kiss you?” Souris glanced back at Viperion and Chat, who both looked at her.

“No. She said she was simply running out the clock, then my charm ended.”

“Smart girl. And she played it well. Everyone is going to eat up the superhero drama she stirred,” Souris said.

“What drama?” Ladybug asked.

“Think about it. The fox played into an attraction for you like a classic hero/villain love. Makes it look like she kissed you, then wounds you. Not long after that, the other love comes to help their partner, seemingly unaware. It’s the perfect story,” Sleuthlynx said.

“But it’s not true!”

Sleuthlynx shrugged. “It doesn’t have to be. They just need a lead and then the imagination makes up the rest. It’s all about making an appealing story.”

“Exactly. Listen to the writer.”

Rose peeked her head in the doorway. “Lunch is ready. Will you all be staying?”

Chat shook his head. “I need to be back home. Father would blow a fuse if he found me missing.”

“Won’t the glitter be a tip off that you were out?” Souris asked.

Chat looked down and saw the glitter on his suit. He ran his arm across his face and saw glitter.

Chat grimaced. “That’s going to be difficult to explain.”

“Especially if he was watching the news,” Souris pointed out.

Chat’s ears pinned, then straightened. “What if we use our Miraculous to destroy the glitter? Unless you like the glitter?”

“I hate glitter and I don’t need my parents asking why I took a glitter bath. But what would I create?”

Souris grinned. “How about an instrument?”

“An instrument?”

Souris nodded. She whispered a suggestion in Ladybug’s ear. Ladybug’s eyes widened and she grinned. Ladybug whispered it to Chat. His eyes darted to Viperion, then nodded. Viperion eyed them suspiciously as they used their Miraculous. The glitter disappeared as Ladybug remade it into a violin. Viperion gasped when he saw it. It was an ebony violin. In the wood on the sides were plant details, like herbs. On the front was a snake curled up with red roses around it.

Ladybug held it out to Viperion. “For you.”

“What? No. I can’t take this.”

Souris nudged Viperion. “C’mon, brother. It’s just a violin.”

“I can’t accept this. I’ve not done anything to deserve this.”

“Perhaps you can see it as burying the hatchet?” Chat suggested.

“Have you?”

“I have. But we’ll talk later. I have to go. See you guys!” Chat waved good-bye and dashed out.

Ladybug smiled and placed the violin in Viperion’s lap. “Tikki, spots off.”

Tikki emerged from the earrings and transformed Ladybug back.

“Is it ok if Tikki eats real quick? I’ll head out after that.”

“Of course. What are your plans, Sleuthlynx?”

“I didn’t really have any other plans.”

Rose gasped. “Then you can have lunch with us! Let’s go.”

Rose grabbed Sleuthlynx’s hand and ran out of the room. Marinette trailed after them. Souris moved, close the door, then knelt beside Viperion.

“Hey, do you want to talk?”

“What is there to even talk about?”

“You could start with being honest with yourself, no?”

“I don’t know if I can.”

“Luka, if you can be honest in your songs, why not to yourself as a whole?”

“Songs are different. There isn’t that hope and everything that comes with this kind of mess. They’re just… words on a page.”

“Words with heart and emotion behind them.”

“Maybe, but in the end, they are just words. Besides, there’s no point. It’s just silly feelings.”

Souris frowned. “Luka, ‘silly feelings’ got you into that mess initially. I know it was because of your ‘old’ crush on Marinette that started it but shifted to me. Please, I don’t want to see that repeated. Please.”

“I’ll try. I just don’t want to get my hopes up. Not like before.”

“Well, it might be different.”

“Yeah? How?”

“Well, you know what some people say, right? Two is better than one, but three is better than two.”

Viperion blushed. Souris laughed and ran out of the room.

“Sass, scales rest.”

Sass emerged from the bracelet and transformed Viperion back.

Sass looked at Luka. “Did you want to talk?”

“You make it sound like I have a choice.”

“You do for now. Later you won’t.”

“Then can it wait until later?”

Sass hissed.

“Look, I just… I just don’t want to talk. It’s not important anyway.”

“What isn’t? How you feel?”

“Yes.”

“Have you learned nothing? That kind of thinking got you in that mess in the first place.”

“Then what else can I do? I’m not… I’m not.” Luka paused and sighed. “I don’t matter.”

“Luka?”

Luka moved the violin onto the floor, then stood. “It doesn't matter.”

Sass stared at Luka as he left the room.

Lila returned home. She checked to see her mother wasn’t home before she headed to her room.

“Trixx, reveal.”

Trixx emerged from the necklace and transformed Lila back.

“Well, that was entertaining.”

“Wasn’t it? I haven’t had fun like that in ages. Did you see how I got under their skin? It was almost too easy that it wasn’t fun. Almost.”

“So, what’s the next course of action?”

Lila hummed. “Well, we’ve got a whole city to fuck with. Gossip, lies, and deception to spread. And with the heroes now in the spotlight like any celebrity, I have more to work with.”

“What if the butterfly holder should attack?”

“Let the heroes handle it. I’ll maybe be around to catch the fight, but only if something juicy happens.”

“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s unpack and set everything up.”

Smart, but lazy - which I wasn't. I was diagnosed with autism in my 20s, but my psychiatrist suspects I might have ADHD as well. I have trouble focusing okay.

My dad's cancer is my biggest concern right now.

Left is partially paralysed and currently my fingers are somewhat relaxed (yay), right hand is okay but a bit shaky, both are warm.

That nothing is impossible.

Polish Christmas dinner.

the three biggest struggles you’ve overcome?

I suffered a double stroke that put me in coma, but with my hard work and help from physiotherapists, I can walk again like nothing happened at all. Just my hand is still partially paralysed and it will stay like that forever. This is just one, but definitely has a big impact on my life. I became disabled within seconds.

four talents you’re proud of having?

Photography, scientific mind (good at physics the most), good ear for music, and I can't think of anything else.

No idea. Never thought of it.

I don't know, I'm not much an anime person.
