WHY IS EVERY ROCK BAND TURNING TO SYNTH POP ATM???

So frontman Simon Neil claims that 'Instant History' is not indicative of what the Scottish trio's upcoming album will sound like, but it still doesn't give me high hopes, especially after 2016's Ellipsis...

It's disappointing that rock has become such a dirty word, that you have to turn your track into a euphoric pop anthem just so you can compete with pop's mainstream. Make it rock, but not too rock. Rock is for boomers now or whatever 🙄 Tread the path of rock-lite mediocrity in order to survive. How many times do I need to say it: DON'T BECOME THE NEXT IMAGINE DRAGONS!

As Neil says about the track (via SPIN):

‘‘Instant History’ is the biggest, most slammest pop moment we’ve ever worked on [...] And thematically it’s a good pointer for what the album is about: learning from mistakes and realizing how you can move things forward. Things can be similar although they’ll never be the same, but let’s not be scared of that.’

Sorry for the pessimistic review, but... I still hope I’m proven wrong... Maybe... I don’t know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Фестиваль стенс-культуры в Москве

По сравнению с предыдущим годом - машин было намного больше, как и публики. Появилось множество новых проектов, поднявших планку качества на уровень выше. Временами складывалось ощущение, что на находишься не в России а на каком-нибудь европейском стенс-ивенте. Это, безусловно, радует. Наша стенс-культура с каждым годом все ближе к общемировым стандартам. 

А вот публика, пришедшая на мероприятии крайне расстроила. Мало того, что народу было ОЧЕНЬ много, даже фотографировать машины было проблематично, ��ак еще эта толпа состояла, в основном, из случайных людей. Они гуляли себе по парку и случайно набрели на сборище каких-то безумных машин с торчащими наружу колесами. Отсюда и непонимание, реплики про заниженные дагами приоры и прочее. Сами "носители культуры" сидели в тени деревьев и покуривали кальян, в то время как одуревшие от жары посетители метались между машин и фотографировали их на телефоны. Возможно, организаторам феста и нравится площадка в Сокольниках, но такие мероприятия интересны все-таки, достаточно узкому кругу людей и проводить их лучше обособленно. Нести "культуру в массы" - это, конечно же, хорошо. Но стенс и так уже моден донельзя, люди в спешном порядке переделывают свои сракерские и "пацанские" машины под этом модный стиль, чтобы быть в тренде и собирать лайки. Так что массы уже все поняли давным давно и сделали выводы. Но не будем о грустном. В целом, фест удался. Количество и качество проектов показывает что стенс-культура в России определенно есть, причем весьма достойная. 

Ну и, собственно, фото.. VW и Audi было достаточно много. Как-никак вокр��г этих автомобилей завязана вся европейская стенс-сцена, поэтому их так охотно дорабатывают.

Не обошлось и без автомобилей из Баварии и других достойных европейских авто

Была даже экзотика в виде Renault Logan

Конечно же, на фесте были представлены и отечественные автомобили. Например вот такая интересная ВАЗ-2103

Ну и, конечно же, японские автомобили. Тут были поистине безумные экспонаты.

Нельзя не отметить и эту парочку - крутейший Nissan и MX-5

Интересные машины были и на гостевой парковке. Например эта "хачироку" на олдовых Watanabe и злой резине.

И нереально крутой Civic

Машин, конечно же, было намного больше, но не все попали в объектив. Такие мероприятия все же лучше посещать лично, дабы прочувствовать всю атмосферу. Возможно, в этом Вам поможет наше видео с фестиваля

Album Review: ‘A Celebration of Endings’ - Biffy Clyro

I... was really dreading having to review Biffy Clyro’s latest album. Up until a week or two ago, I still wasn’t going to do it. I didn’t even bother with the soundtrack they wrote for the 2019 film, Balance, Not Symmetry.

After the disappointment of 2016’s Ellipsis, I just couldn’t take any more promises of songs that would be ‘as fucked up as possible,’ then fail to deliver, not to mention having to watch one of my favourite Scottish rock bands take such a hard tumble from greatness. It wouldn’t be the last time...

But curiosity finally got the better of me. Although A Celebration of Endings is marginally better than Ellipsis, it ultimately still finds the Scottish trio in a state of flux.

Both ‘Weird Leisure’ and ‘Tiny Indoor Fireworks’ - among the album’s previous singles – prove pretty forgettable, their stories of mental anguish and the past drug addiction of an old friend respectively undercut by a grab-bag of generic riffs.

‘Instant History’ - the band’s ‘biggest, most slammest pop moment’ - captures the zeitgeist (‘We’re shouting in the streets/‘Cause all our love is instant history’), but with its icy synths and arena-ready chorus, it’s doomed to soundtrack thousands of sporting montages.

‘Space’ borders on treacly, with ‘Opaque’ being the more superior ballad. It’s almost up there with the beautiful ‘God and Satan’ from 2009’s Only Revolutions, making better use of its swelling strings and heartfelt strums. Neil’s vocal positively aches as he spits back: ‘Take the fucking money, take the fucking money, take the fucking money and run,’ his words stained with regret as record label suits commodify his pain. It’s quite revealing in the aftermath of Ellipsis, having to express yourself in a way that’s palatable; forced to play industry games which only end up diluting your product.

So naturally, A Celebration of Endings is at its best when the boys truly unleash and don’t overthink things.  

‘The Pink Limit’ harks back to the brighter, sleeker tones of Only Revolutions. The band very nearly named the record after this track, but ‘it ended up feeling a little bit too throwaway, a bit too comedic as a title.’ Which, in a weird way, sums up A Celebration of Endings and even Ellipsis as a whole: Biffy do themselves no favours by holding back.

‘End Of’ rediscovers the spark of their earlier work with its brutal chug of riffs and a heavy dose of Glaswegian grime, providing a much-needed jolt in the middle of the record. Those guitars in the breakdown just fucking crunch so damn hard.

At least ‘Cop Syrup’ ends the record on a cinematic note, a restless animal filled with punk bravado and ragged howls of ‘fuck everybody’ before slipping into contemplative psychedelia and back again, both twisted and menacing but also finding a glimmer of hope amid the chaos (‘I’ve been saved from the darkest place/I’ve embraced the need to live’).

A Celebration of Endings, like Ellipsis, is uneven. Sometimes, potential can emerge: the sleazy, reverberated horn blasts on ‘Worst Type of Best Possible,’ the tricky-fingered bass on ‘The Champ,’ the ethereal string arrangements woven throughout the record. Neil’s lyricism is still as visceral as ever. But just as you start to savour these moments, the band soon return to playing it safe and predictable.

This’ll raise obvious criticism: That I don’t want the band to evolve, that I’m not a *true* fan, or that I’m just being contrarian for the sake of it because I disliked Ellipsis. But it’s hard to deny that the Scottish trio are lacking that little something nowadays. They aren’t quite on the road to rock-lite mediocrity, but they do veer dangerously close at times. And rock really needs all the saviours it can get right now... 

Neil himself seems to sum the album up best, as he recently told NME: ‘I want our fans to either be worried that it’s going to be terrible or excited that it’s going to fuck their socks off.’ And I think I fall somewhere in between: A Celebration of Endings is admittedly not as bad as I imagined, but it’s not enough to make me celebrate. Not just yet...
