They are 10 moves ahead of you. You trip on a loose cobblestone - somehow this is part of their 25-step plan that ends with the destruction of their enemies (some collatoral damage included). You should never attend a party with them (unless that's what they want you to think...)
I didn't say a name, but you thought it, right?

A Shape for Your Fear
5.1k explicit graphic depictions of violence, minor character (oc) death, body horror, canon-typical racism
Sui Zhou doesn't belong in the capital. He should be at the border, where he was made.

Every time I see a woman in drag on a Chinese drama, it takes me forever to figure out who knows she's a woman or not. Like, is this a disguise for everyone? Or just the general public? If she's not the lead, does the lead know?

I genuinely think The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty/14th Year of Chenghua is the most egregious case of "Watch the show before you read the book or you'll be so disappointed"
Because the plot COMPLETELY diverges after the first case, with only some things even being remotely similar and not even the first cases having the same conclusion, so watching the show doesn't spoil anything in the book at all.
But if you're used to God of Solving Cases Tang Fan with his ethereal elegance, you will have such a hard time getting used to Whiny Foodie Sleuth Tang Fan in the show.
I love both versions and Whiny Foodie Sleuth Tang Fan is my special baby, but I don't think I've seen anybody yet who actually enjoyed the show all that much after they read the book.
On the other hand, I watched the show, became obsessed, read the book, really enjoyed it, and rewatched the show and I'm still really enjoying it.
It's just that none of these people are the same characters and none of the plot is remotely similar.

(modern) mostly fem* chssn lineup!
left to right: wang zhi // tang fan // sui zhou // dong'er // pei huai // tang yu
lore under the cut!
wang zhi: 20, gay, intersex (AIS). head of information at taiping, right hand to zhu jianshen; scouted tang fan and sui zhou; really likes fancy wines
tang fan: 28, lesbian, gnc; private investigator, often contracts with taiping to track down info; pretty visibly gnc, so the PI position started out as a necessity; met sui zhou while working and convinced her to let her and dong'er move into the apartment she inherited
sui zhou: 31, lesbian, gnc, PCOS; ex-military, passed as a man for over a decade, still confuses people; works a nondescript IT job now with taiping; worked as a line cook for a while, hence her skills in the kitchen
dong'er: 13, questioning; adopted by tang fan after her entire family died; knows what's going on with suitang, is watching with popcorn; scarily smart, wants to study as an engineer or physicist
pei huai: 29, bi; works as a pharmacist; college friends with tang fan; self-experiments :)
tang yu: 32, bi; formerly a stay at home wife, currently a secretary; pei huai was her bi awakening; practices and collects works of calligraphy
misc notes:
— taiping is actually 太平后勤公司/taiping logistics company, the name is very vague but they essentially deal in problem-solving for other corporations. the name is after the taiping princess because zhu jianshen has Aspirations (the fact that it's also the unfortunate name of the taiping rebellion is something no one dares to mention)
— the show ostensibly takes place in beijing but for fun and personal reasons i'm making it set in dongbei. tang fan and tang yu and sui zhou are all from taiwanese immigrant families though (because i have to justify the accent somehow)

Watch Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty with us!
Tumblr media
Queer Watch Party is starting off strong with Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, a Chinese drama based on a BL novel. Due to censorship, SOTMD isn't explicitly queer, but it sure does feature the very twinky Tang Fan, a genius criminal investigator writes erotica on the side to support his very expensive food obsession.
Tang Fan teams up with Sui Zhou, a court guard with a troubled past (who also happens to be an amazing cook), court schemer and master manipulator Wang Zhi, and Tang Fan's accidentally acquired child Dong'er. As the series progresses Tang Fan manages to add more and more people to his clown car of an adopted family. The show is really funny and touching.

The characters so far in The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty:
Tang Fan, the titular sleuth, a detective and low ranking judge who is always hungry, can't pay his rent, writes porn for extra cash, zero political acumen
Sui Zhou, army vet with PTSD, cop, related to the Dowager Empress, amazing chef, man who lets Tang Fan invade his home, most eligible bachelor of the Ming Dynasty
Wang Zhi, Very Important Eunuch, collector of favours, probably dubbed by Akira Ishida
Dong Er, precious child with eidetic memory saved from being sold to a brothel by Tang Fan with Sui Zhou's money, better than you at everything
Duo Er La (Dora), plains nomad of ethnic minority, horsewoman, ready to fight a man at the drop of a hat, fondness for Tang Fan
Wu Yun, subordinate of Dora, big horse boy and interpreter
Pei Huai, doctor and 'gynecologist', eater of poisons, distributer of exciting foreign foods like 'tomato' and 'corn'
Xue Ling, subordinate cop of Sui Zhou, a mythical Good Cop
A Lamb Too Adorable To Eat
