Response to Louis CK and Turkle

Sherry Turkle, author of “Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other”, was interviewed about her stance on social media. In ways, I agree with her. The video showed a group of friends who were not discussing anything at dinner, however they were all staring down at their phones. I feel that the generation I live in today does this. While I do conform to this sometimes, I would say that I do it less and less as I get older. To me, the company of friends or family beats any new social media post or what my friend texted me about her boyfriends dog. Social media is now used as a way of showing off your life, not showing who you are as a person. Turkle also discusses how this is changing us as a society. Many people would rather trust Google Maps to get them somewhere instead of asking someone on the street. Another example is that we rely more and more for education from the internet. While it is a great source of information, I don’t believe that half of the articles are actually creditable. Young children are adpating to this type of life style and it just makes me think, what will the world be in 25 years when they are in the workforce, or will there even be a workforce?

Louis CK’s information was very credible. I liked his stance on texting and driving. He stated that he thinks people text and drive because they do not what to be alone in their car. This is SO true. I agree with his comment that you look around and almost everyone is texting and driving. I was actually rear ended because of a girl doing this. I also have a lot of experience with this issue at work. I work at an insurance company and handle PIP claims, so basically when you get hurt in a car accident. This is a growing issue in the insurance industry. I would add on to his point about “feeling alone” without your phone. Many times, even at central, people will be with a group of individuals that they have never met before and instead of introducing themselves they just look at their phone. I have to admit, when I feel that I am in an awkward situation I do the same, however I wish that someone would break that habit.  So, I guess you could say that I’m a moderate when it comes to social media. I use it everyday, not that I post but I do view other people’s posts, however I do feel that it is affecting society in a bad way. I wish that there were changes, however I don’t know if that’s possible at this point.
