Shinobu Ohtaka's Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Manga Gets Musical Adaptation in June 2022

    A musical adaptation of Shinobu Ohtaka's fantasy action adventure manga Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, entitled "Musical 'Magi' - Dungeon Kumikyoku (Suite) -," is scheduled to be performed at The Galaxy Theater in Tokyo from June 3 to 12, then at Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka on June 18 and 19.

  The manga was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday from 2009 to 2017, then its TV anime  adaptation was aired for 50 episodes from 2012 to 2014. This is the first time this manga has been made into a musical.

  Kotaro Yoshitani, known for his stage play adaptation works based on popular Japanese game/manga/anime series, such as Hetalia, BANANA FISH, Bakumatsu Rock, and Revolutionary Girl Utena, is attached to direct on a script/lyrics by Sayaka Asai (Touken Ranbu musicals). Yugo Miyajima, a member of the seven-member Japanese-Korean dance vocal unit ORβIT, is cast as the protagonist Aladdin, while Hiroki Ino (Tenya Iida in the My Hero Academia stage plays) plays another protagonist, Alibaba. And voice actor Toshiyuki Morikawa, who voiced Ugo in the anime series, will make a voice appearance as his character.

Spreading Da-iCE awareness in Japan!

As some of you may know, the reason I was able to come to Japan is because I got a job as an English instructor. However, I don’t teach children or teens as most do. 90% of my students are university students or adults with a career. My average student tends to be a 40-year old business professional, usually male.

When I meet a new student, the question “What brought you to Japan?” always comes up. I of course explain that I’m not well traveled and have always wanted to go abroad, but I also tell them about my passion for J-pop as a reason for choosing Japan in particular. Which then leads to the question, “What group is your favorite?”

Because of this question, I’ve gotten to introduce Da-iCE to a lot of people! The group’s biggest fan demographic are teen girls and women in their 20s-30s, so for most of my middle-aged students, this is their first time being exposed to the group. I get to hear their immediate first impressions about Da-iCE, which are really interesting!

-My students who do know Da-iCE are usually in university or women. However, a few of my older students know them because their daughters are fans. One told his daughter about me and she was really excited the group has international fans

-To those who don’t know Da-iCE, I quickly show them a picture. A few people then recognize Taiki and say “I know that one”. A few also remember seeing the group on Sukkiri, which is a popular morning show

-Among older Japanese, the image of “Japanese male idol” is “looks like a Johnny’s member,” so when they see Da-iCE, they think they’re a kpop group. This happens a lot with other groups like FlowBack and Solidemo as well.

-the most common immediate reaction when I show Da-iCE’s picture is “Whoa, handsome. They’re ikemen.”

-Some will point out the individual members and give their impression, and amusingly, the impression is pretty much the same for every student. When they point out Taiki and Yudai, they always say “They look really cool”. For Toru: “Very handsome and stylish”. For Hayate: “This is the flower boy type young girls like”. For Sota they always immediately say “モテる”, which basically means “popular” with the nuance that they’ll be surrounded by admirers all the time

- when I say Sota is my favorite member, the reaction is immediately “Your ideal type is men with small faces?” Lol EVERY TIME

- some students will check out Da-iCE after I mention them. One came back shocked that they were good singers because (in her words) “Japanese idols only have faces, usually not voices”

-after I introduce them to Da-iCE, a lot of students will report back whenever they see something about Da-iCE in the future. Like “I saw Da-iCE at the music store!” It’s very sweet ^^

Da-iCE, I hope I managed to get you more fans among the businessman demographic! Haha

I have to admit I’m still far too devastated about the fact that X4 had their last Live today. X4 were the group who brought me here...to who I am today. Without them I would have never known Da-iCE, Solidemo and in the end LDH. I’m so grateful for everything they did, I’m happy for all the memories I have. I was quite sad when Shota left, but I thought they can do it with only 4 members. But today was still their last Live and I’m still so incredible sad and just listening to their songs make my cry. SOLIDEMO / 君がくれたもの（CODE-V cover）

Recently I’ve been mostly listening to Generations, RMPG, Flower or Dream so that I sometimes forget about my other precious Jpop bands especially the group which started everything :) And I’m crying because they covered a song from another Jpop group Code-V (they stopped their activities recently) with whom they are really good friends and hung out often. This is definitely one of my favourite covers since all of them have parts and not only the 4 main vocalists :) They have gotten so much better over the years and their voices have improved so much. I have to admit I was totally surprised by Tomoya’s and Keiichi’s voices because it’s rare to hear them solo and OMG they have gotten really really good.

And the stylist definitely did a good work with their recent outfits. I love them in suits but streetstyle suits them so much better. They look awesome in it.

Since I’m sick in bed I can at least make it a Solidemo day starting with one of the most hilarious things they did a few years ago for Sunshine City :D

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Musical Releases Documentary Crip Following Its Main Cast Members' Challenge

    The official website for the forthcoming musical adaptation of Shinobu Ohtaka's fantasy action adventure manga Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, entitled "Musical 'Magi' - Dungeon Kumikyoku (Suite) -," has posted a 10-minute documentary clip following its three main cast members' first photo session in costume, interviews, and practice.

  Yugo Miyajima (a member of the seven-member Japanese-Korean dance vocal unit ORβIT) is cast as the protagonist Aladdin, along with Hiroki Ino (Tenya Iida in the My Hero Academia stage plays) as another protagonist and Nana Okada (a member of Japanese female idol group AKB48) as the main heroine Morgiana.

  In the end of the clip, Miyajima says, "I hope you will see a new side of me on this Magi musical. I also hope that Magi fans who don't know me will get to know me, and I will do my best to make this a wonderful and heart-warming stage."

        The stag play directed by Kotaro Yoshitani (Hetalia, Revolutionary Girl Utena) is scheduled to be performed at The Galaxy Theater in Tokyo from June 3 to 12, 2022, then at Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka on June 18 and 19.

Aoyama Operetta Stage Play's Main Cast Unveil Their Costumes for Male and Female Roles

    Aoyama Operetta, a new mixed-media project co-produced by Cybird, Avex Pictures, and ABC Rights Business, plans to launch its stage play series in Tokyo in April 2021. Its six main male cast members have revealed visuals of their plainclothes version and stage costume version, based on the character illustrations by Chihiro Takida. Three of them play female roles on the stage (in the story), so they dress up as a woman in the latter. 

  The project was revealed in September as "a new type of mixed-media theatrical content that crosses two dimensions and three dimensions." Its story is set at an all-male theater troupe based in Aoyama, Tokyo. As opposed to Takarazuka Revue in the real world, female roles are all played by male cast members at the company.,

  The stage play will be performed at Sakura Hall in Tokyo seven times from April 22 to 25, 2021. Based on the story of the visual voice drama, the play will tell a launching performance for a new team, "Nova."
