Dean’s halfway through filling the tank when he hears it.

“Oh my god, is that a ‘67 Impala?”

He turns. And then immediately stares.

You’re walking toward the car like it’s a religious artifact, eyes wide and shiny and locked on her like she’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen—which, honestly, fair. But Dean’s used to people ignoring the Impala. Or calling her a boat. Or saying she looks like a damn hearse.

Not this.

“You even have the original grille,” you’re saying, almost breathless. “Is that the factory paint or did you restore it? Oh my god, and the interior—wait, wait, are those bench seats?”

Dean blinks. “Uh… yeah.”

You drop into a crouch to look closer at the tires and start muttering under your breath like you're cataloging her specs. Which you kind of are.

Dean can’t help but grin. “You a fan?”

You pop up like you forgot he was there, eyes lit with excitement. “Fan is an understatement. This is THE car. Like—the car. It’s the holy grail of muscle. Four hundred twenty-seven cubic inches, V8 engine, 385 horsepower if you tune it right—and she’s got the bones for long-haul driving, which you never get in these classics.”

Dean lets out a low whistle, clearly impressed. “Most people just say she’s shiny.”

“Those people have no taste,” you shoot back, not missing a beat.

Dean laughs. He’s never heard someone defend Baby’s honor that fast. He likes it.

“You a mechanic or just real into old Chevys?”

“I mean—” You pause. “I’m autistic. Hyperfixated on cars since I was like, six. I used to fall asleep listening to my grandpa’s engine manuals. I can take apart a carburetor blindfolded. Tried to do it in eighth grade science class. Was not appreciated.”

Dean barks out a laugh. You beam, proud and not even a little embarrassed. It’s contagious.

“Name’s Dean,” he offers, tossing the gas nozzle back into the pump. “She’s mine. Fully restored her with my own hands. Most folks don’t even give her a second look anymore.”

“They’re fools.”

He points at you. “Exactly.”

You walk a slow circle around the Impala, reverent. “The chrome’s original, too, huh? You polish this, don’t you? Like religiously.”

Dean looks a little sheepish. “Every week.”

You glance up at him, a big, dorky smile on your face. “I think I love you.”

Dean chokes. “Sorry, what?”

You freeze. “Oh my god. Out loud. I said that out loud.”

You look like you’re about to self-destruct. Dean raises his hands quickly, chuckling.

“Hey, hey—it’s alright. I mean, you just met the real love of my life. Pretty sure you’re her type.”

You glance at the car. Then back at Dean. “So… do I get to sit in her or do I have to buy you dinner first?”

Dean grins, big and slow. “Tell you what. You let me take you to dinner, and I’ll even let you ride shotgun.”

You gasp. “With the windows down?”

Dean nods solemnly. “Cassette tape blasting. Bench seat privilege included.”

“Deal.”

You hold out your hand like it’s sacred, and Dean takes it, shaking with a smile.

Neither of you knows it yet, but this is absolutely going to become a love story.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy 112 - Babysitting

Day 46 of 100. With the huge fucking infodump out of the way, we're back to Free Time. And I was going to do... stuff... Yeah.

I believe the plan was training in the new VR level that includes B-Team. Since I leveled up Gym and now have extra skills to unlock.

They're learning. There's a lot of 10 HP and 6 HP guys on the field right now. Also a bunch of these 2 HP dumpies but they're in the back and on the other side of the field from Tsubasa.

I'm actually going to have to work for this one, but it's worth it for the 3,000 BP.

As for the afternoon... let's do some Gifting. I haven't gifted anything to Shouma yet. What do you get for the boy who thinks he's garbage?

We're at level 2 in Math right now, though, so I think Karua would be proud of us. It turned out that studying was pointless; It was actually hanging out with Hiruko and Eito that let us absorb mathematical comprehension through osmosis.

Which really just means that Takumi is a social learner. He best acquires knowledge by sitting with someone and going through the motions with them guiding him. Something that crowded school systems often aren't equipped to properly give him.

...though he also doesn't pay attention when people talk and misses important details that have to be re-explained to him later. He only really retains the knowledge when it's relevant to a task he's trying to complete.

It's what makes the preparation section of the Persuasion minigame funny. Takumi isn't able to charismatically talk a person into accepting his ideas by retaining knowledge of them and working it to his advantage; He just spends a day cramming for the test by asking everyone else what they know about the person.

Persuasion minigame has some "glancing at the notes I wrote on my arm while going 'Uh-huh, Uh-huh" energy.

Oh my god, Karua is babysitting. That's humiliating. And appropriate.

Okay, I no longer think these memories are being fed to us. Only that they're narratively plot-convenient.

This one was definitely triggered by the discussion of World Death this morning and the true state of the earth.

That seems likely, yeah. The people running the TRC must know about World Death. It's likely top-secret ultra-confidential information.

There's always a takeaway from these flashbacks. Last time, it was that Karua and by extension probably Nozomi wants to look up at the sky with an astronomical telescope. It seems probable that we're going to do that with her at some point. In fact, there's an astronomical telescope as an option in the Gift-o-Matic.

This flashback, I find concerning because the only thing I can latch onto that might be relevant to our circumstances... is the possibility of the moon falling on us.

That can't be it. I have confirmed with my own eyes that the moon is still up there in the night sky, so nothing to do with a moon crash can be related to our predicament right now.

Maybe this one legitimately meant nothing, and is just a reflection of our mind rotating the truth of the world outside?

Explanations under the cut! FRSGM has undergone some changes. :] Sorry for any weird errors, and some things will likely end up put of order. I was using the Tumblr mobile text editor.

FRSGM vs. Bad Ending

Humans Modified Beyond Recogniton: Self explanatory! When the End of the Universe hit, everything with DNA or something similar to mutate got mutated, including humans and other sophonts.

Advanced Medicine: The talgoz and their weird, body horror-y wet-tech is damn reliable once you get over the ick factor. Also regular sophonts to a lesser extent, but using technology we're used to.

Uncertain Future and Extinction: Breaking the order because these two go hand in hand. When the End occurred, every creature on every planet in the known universe was mutated, meaning every species subject to the mutations became functionally extinct. Even if not every member of a species was turned into a living slime mold or something, fertility rates were typically too low to go on. When the remnants of humans, mantidons, skates, and other pre-End species die out, their successors will largely be asexually reproducing organisms... assuming their homelands don't rapidly self-destruct around them. Who knows what they'll do with the things they inherit? Some sophonts with massively increased lifespans want to try and watch these creatures develop and help them out.

Megastructures: Most space infrastructure, particularly ones built for cohabitation. Skates just need things BIG because that comes with the territory of being a manta ray-salamander the size of a polar bear (and larger wingspan-wise), although they prefer width over height. The Ursa Major ship that the story is centered on is also notorious for being gigantic, among other, less advertising friendly things.

Non-Identical Clones: The process by which talgoz seem to reproduce--at least, certain ones do this. It can also happen when a talgoz eats you, as they unravel the brain and digest everything else second, then take the genetic and electric information and "reprint" it. That talgoz (The Pillar) may have just been insane or otherwise under duress, though, since it was aboard the Ursa Major at the time of the End.

Mind Linking: Talgoz do this to any new species they encounter until they believe they have a comprehensive understanding of all its languages and cultures. Ideally, this is done in secret and they never reveal themselves to the target species, leaving the talgoz to wander their territories in search of whatever they need at that moment.

Trains: They look and function much the same as in real life, except in FRSGM, an entire rail system is sometimes piloted by an AI.

Dark Forest Hypothesis: The talgoz operate under these rules and would have never shown themselves to the wider universe if it hadn't abruptly Ended, which put them in a bad spot. Otherwise, the sophonts mostly got along, if only to avoid a brutal war. Skates in particular are not a creature to be messed with. An early encounter with a massive asteroid forced them to adopt heavy duty laser weaponry--their equivalent of nukes.

Expensive Technology: All spaceships, but the Ursa Major space freighter really fits the bill. She was massive, equipped to carry all three sophonts (and then the animals they were tasked to transport), had a very advanced AI copilot (Savior), and contained state of the art planetsick prevention. Apparently. She was a massive experiment, and many animal and astronaut rights groups took issue with her, but she went ahead on her maiden voyage anyway.

Cold, Clinical Langauge: The talgoz. They all talk that way about basically everything including the Horrors, but Bluey / Bright I'd and Bushy Tailed is a notable exception. Not that she's more affected by the horrors, she just picked up a more "emotional" accent from her goat buddies.

Mars Base: The Earthlings have one. It's not terribly important, though. It does still exist and function with a tiny amount of survivors after the End.

Mental Programming: The talgoz again! They are immune to planetsick because of this, as they can essentially expunge it from their neurons like an anti-virus cleaning a computer, and do other weird things like become one with their spaceships and the like. Must be nice, to be immune to going insane!

Nation Collapse: The End of the Universe tends to do that.

FRSGM vs. Sundown

Space Ruins: A natural occurrence in a post apocalypse. They are noxious death traps to any creature that breathes air, as unless someone was around to remove the accumulating bodies, they were free to decompose and contaminate the life support systems of the structures. And then those systems often failed due to lack of upkeep.

Corporate Branding: Found everywhere in space ruins and on-planet ruins. The AI Savior is, in and of itself, part of a corporate brand. It's a chill guy, though.

I Wasn't Given A Name: Many entities post-End, ranging from abandoned AIs still doing their jobs in fetid space stations to creatures on their planets trying to survive. True of any creature we would have considered an animal pre-End.

There Will Come Soft Rains: Happens all over the place, sometimes it's actually people and animals (which is a nebulous distinction post-End, tbh) doing their pre-End routines because they can't think of anything else.

"Trains": Peoplemovers. Cute name, but they're talgoz tech, so they have to look gruesome. People are strapped into these gangly all-terrain nightmares brain-first and ferried around to unknown ends. They're still alive but dormant, despite some people understandably mistaking the passengers for dead.

Frequent Reminiscing: There are few creatures in the universe born before the End that don't miss the old days, for one reason or another.

Loving and Being Loved: Between the violence and doom and gloom, it does happen. It's true! Although the main FRSGM story is, on the whole, a pessimistic and tragic in tone, nice things occurred in that story and in others. For example, a lucky few communities rebuilt small radio and internet systems and began making weird post-End memes to entertain themselves--and were shocked to find others replying. The xenonet is mostly dead... but not completely.

Space Voids: Big ones. It's a big, empty place out there... Emptier still now that all the dead ships and stations are breaking into space junk.

Finality: You can't come back from the End.

Immense Distances: FRSGM encompasses three different planets and their astral territories, and they're all extremely far apart (naturally).

Waiting: To die, mostly. But some are waiting for other things. A daily radio message, a friend to return from gathering water, for that guy who trades for weird fruit, and so on.

Megastructures: The further we get into the post-End era, less so, as they're starting to break apart, but some surviving space communities have kept theirs running.

Total Freedom: For some and not others. The talgoz find it freeing to not have to worry about pesky warmonger barbarians on their case, some find the lack of societal expectations post-End freeing, a few never liked their original bodies to begin with. For the scant few creatures adapted to live in their new, mutant universe, they are free as the first mammals after the meteor were free. Naturally, this also encompasses those who feel free to be evil.

Or how three out of the eight messages he sent to Leo were apologies, but Leo doesn’t want to hear it if he doesn’t even know what he’s apologizing for, he’s only doing it so he’ll keep stroking his ego, and god Donnie do you ever shut the fuck up? Leo says please don’t apologize and Donnie says nothing in response. Because the only thing worse than them not accepting his sorry’s was tell me what you’re saying sorry for, and even when he said the right thing he was still wrong in the end.

YOUUUU GET IT ESPECIALLY WITH THE LEO THING. that "please dont apologize" is LOADED in like four different ways, especially knowing the inner turmoil that it must have stemmed from; the thing leo and donnie have the MOST in common is that they have a tendency to run their mouth when theyre nervous, and even leo's "apology" (NOTE: this has always been intentional, but donnie calls it one, but leo never even said the words "im sorry" in those messages. donnie just grasped for straws because he was scared of their relationship falling apart) leo is kind of run-on and rambling and making excuses and being long-winded, but that curt three-word response after so much deliberation speaks of so, so much pain. and he doesn't even realize its one of the worst things he could have possibly said. he was probably laying in bed because splinter tried to get him to sleep, his heart falling more and more when donnie just left him on read, desperately trying to grasp for closure that he knew he was never going to get.

they used to be so talkative and now their voices have been taken from them because they both feel like there's nothing they can say to make it better. the coping mechanisms they used to fall back on in order to hide insecurity were ripped apart by the curse, leo because they were weaponized and twisted from something that he mostly used to show his family a good time to something vicious and cruel and manipulative and donnie because he was made to feel like a horrible person and a "liar" for them, so they're reacting in really similar ways in the end. literally despite the horrifying trauma they still find a way to twin LMFAO
