A few years back I drew this promotional image to help get the word around about @sonny_liew ‘s graphic novel “The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye”. If you’ve never picked up the book, you really should. Sonny is a genius with skills that intimidate the hell out of me. A huge book, packed with amazing art & words. #robot #kidcartoonist #theartofcharliechanhockchye #sonnyliew #imagination #giantrobot #robothero #robbmommaerts #inkdrawing #cartoonistsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CCtLL3zl65k/?igshid=1amx8bxldb0ex

L'arte di Charlie Chan Hoch Chye presentato da Sonny Liew Ed. Bao Publishing, 2017

#charliechanhockchye #sonnyliew #dibbuks #instacomic #comic #comics #galthorcomics https://www.instagram.com/p/B-q_y-6hpQl/?igshid=1oq2feozu472m

Art by Sonny Liew.

gerardway: ETERNITY GIRL THE COLLECTED VOLUME OUT NOW ⠀ Today, Young Animal and DC Comics released what is in my opinion one of the best graphic novels of 2018. Written by Magdalene Visaggio, Art by Sonny Liew, colors by Chris Chuckry and letters by Todd Klein. You’re not going to find much out there quite like it. A very special book about life, death, and identity. #eternitygirl#dcyounganimal #dccomics

A fellow comrade just won 3 Eisner awards, a prestigious award for comics equivalent to the Oscars for films. Having someone so close to home winning an award so far away is an inspiration, reminding me that anything is possible. Check out his Patreon page here.
I met him years ago by chance when an artist friend and I decided to head to Singapore to participate in a comic convention, and since he has been very encouraging and has helped many of us asia-pacific artists to find recognition in the international market. Thanks to him, I got my first short comic published in an anthology by Image Comics.

(Encouragement from fellow comrade to finish my long overdue book)
It's not easy for us comic artists to sustain a living making comics, it requires a lot of hard work, self-believe, luck and passion for the art and craft.
I recently came back from a road trip conducting comic workshops sponsored by a corporation. I enjoy teaching comics and always encourage my students to tell their personal stories. Although 'personal' stories are harder to sell, since we are nobody, but I believe everyone's individual story is as important as anyone's. All our stories are connected, we are One after all, connected as nature in the universe.

(Parents and children doing the workshop together.)

(Not necessary one must have the skill to draw to make comics, anyone can express their stories via comics, young or old. Sequential images is after all the basis of human expression of an event-story since the Cavemen days)

(The growing collection of minis from my workshop)
Besides, all stories have been told anyway, it is just the matter of how you tell it. And when you master your own 'voice' of storytelling, then you can tell anyone's story. It's your perspective that matters most, not the story. It's your perspective that attracts people, despite your popularity and status in life.
In today's world that is flooded with so many content and stories, I admit that it is really difficult to stand out, and it requires the right angle, marketing strategy and statistics of what the majority like, but we cannot be disheartened by expectations of other people of what is true to ourselves. It is through this craft of telling stories via our own perspective that we can learn more about ourselves within and at the same time affecting the external, which are the readers, to compare and reflect theirs.
Listening to external advice and views are important, it helps us to reflect ours, but we have to be clear, the external only function as influences and recognition, not the creation. Similar to a dancer who dances from within, the artist's soul should be the one holding the brush, not the audiences.
Please do share this post with your friends if you find my thoughts inspiring enough to encourage anyone to make comics.
Peace,
-chinyew
