Is SonoCine Whole Breast Ultrasound a good exam for women with implants?

As part of the provider perspective, Dr. Carrie Morrison, a Breast Imaging Radiologist, explains why SonoCine Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound exam is an excellent breast examination for women with implants.

“SonoCine is an excellent test for women with implants once implants are in place we miss about a third of the breast tissue on mammography and sometimes it's far less than that if there's capsular contraction of the implants many women who get breast implants have no idea that it affects how effective a mammogram is going to be in the future they have no idea that we don't see all the breast tissue and that there's part of their breast that they're at greater risk of getting a delayed diagnosis of cancer in because we can't see it and until the cancer is big enough to feel it we're not going to see it on a mammogram or even know to go look for it but with whole breast ultrasound we can see those cancers early we can find them it's really important for women with implants to have this information and to make the decision to get the supplemental examination there's a recent article in the British medical journal that states that women who have breast implants have a 40 almost 40% greater risk of dying of breast cancer and the reason for this is because the diagnosis is delayed in these women we can't see a significant portion of the breast on the mammogram so women with implants really need to have a supplemental whole breast ultrasound every year to see that part of the breast that we may be missing a cancer in.”

What is SonoCine Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound?

The SonoCine Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound is a computer-guided ultrasound system designed to be used in addition to your traditional mammogram. It was designed to provide greater visual detail of breast tissue, especially for women with dense breast tissue or implants where mammograms may have difficulty providing clear, detailed images.

The SonoCine AWBUS examination is FDA cleared for all dense-breasted women, women with implants and women who have had any type of breast intervention such as a biopsy, lumpectomy, mastectomy. Unlike other ultrasound examinations, this exam provides whole breast coverage, which includes your underarm, clavicle, in-between your breasts, the sides of your breasts and all the way back to your chest wall.

The SonoCine system is designed to overcome the inconsistencies that result from handheld scanning. the inherent complexity of hand scanning detracts from the ability to recognize subtle findings of cancer. SonoCine technology robotically scans the entirety of both breasts to include the axilla (underarms) and records approximately 3,000 images, which are displayed in a movie format for the radiologist to review.

When the exam is completed, the SonoCine AWBUS technology will have captured between 2,000 and 5,000 images to form an ultrasound movie, or Sono (sound)…Cine (movie), for the Radiologist to review. Unlike others, the SonoCine AWBUS is designed to provide you with a fully documented, quality controlled examination of all your breast tissue. This way your primary care physician can compare last year’s to this year’s exam, to see what changes may have occurred.
