Ohhhh, she is using the same cathedral background as the one on the Kalafina Winter Acoustic album cover!(Oh, no, I got a little too excited there for a moment and didn't double-check before writing this, it's not the same image after all. Still, it looks like she was at least heavily inspired by that Kalafina cover). At any rate, it seems particularly fitting when you consider SPICE's Takeshi Kato mentioning that he felt like “Awe” was very reminiscent of her old Kalafina style. I'll admit, I initially wouldn't have made that connection but the longer I listen to the song, the more sense it makes. And it would definitely explain why I am so smitten with it. Damn, I'm obsessed. And I mean, he is not wrong, the song is certainly on a Kalafina-level of dark and dramatic. That bridge with the strings and choir is pretty epic too. I can say with confidence now that is my absolute favourite freelancer solo track so far. And I am glad her singing in the studio version is a bit more polished. She still sounds raw but it suits the atmosphere of the song.

SiNoMC: for the Love of Rei
post migrated to pillowfort (March 2024) archive: dashboard | blog [removed non-image content for reasons]

1ST IMAGE...
Rei sits with her back diagonally to the viewer on a foldable chair in her 1 bedroom home dressed in school clothes and looking down at something in front of her. A single light source coming from the crack between the long window curtains to her left shines a streak of blue directly infront of her and into her otherwise purple dark room. In the room is what appears to be: 1) a mini fridge (with freezer) diagonally to the front right of her, 2) an open box on the floor to the left of it with bandages sticking out, 3) a satchel hanging from the right side of the fridge, 4) various things sitting ontop of the fridge, 5) a roll top dresser with two books ontop in the corner to her diagonal front left, 6) a partially made bed diagonally to the rear left of her on a low metal bedframe, 7) a wide lamp attached to the “headboard” side of said bedframe, 8) a few articles of clothing on the floor diagonally to her rear right, and 9) an open doorway to her far right. The bedroom wall in front of her is composed of large squares that’re almost a third of her height each and reminiscent of padding.
2ND IMAGE...
Rei (left) and Shinji (right) stand around 2 feet apart on a metal platform in front of a cylindrical tank of small fish. They both wear all-white clothes: Rei a knee-high skirt, Shinji ankle-long pants, both matching closed toe sandals. The image stops just below their buttocks, showing the underside of Shinji’s fingers.

Thursday, 9 April 1840
7 1/2
11 1/2
Fine morning – No sun – Reaumur 6 1/4º on the window seat close to my bedhead at 8 1/2 – Slept very well but the terrible jolting one has day after day makes one a sort of lassitude even on getting up after a few hours sleep – I slept from about one last night to 7 a.m. – Cold here so high among the mountains – Casbek after Elbrus the highest summit of the Caucasus – Breakfast over at 9 1/2 then sat reading Murray till now 10 3/4 article Persia II. p.[page] 396 et seq. and here is the account of the Province of Shirwan &c. now ceded to Russia –
A-[Ann] sketched the little church neat new ashlar red stone church and its very pretty picturesque little clock separate standing on 4 little arcades open at the bottom – Out from 11 1/4 to 1 1/2 – I sauntered about 1st by myself then sought George – Went up to the little Gurian (as George called it) rude chapel and cemetery at a little height on the hill (East) above the Town – The chapel oblong very small door towards the West – Fast –
Rather tapering – Roof of rough walling retiring roof wise stood on little knoll above the chapel gazing till I could see nothing my eyes ached towards Casbek –
The monastery full in view for 3 or 4 minutes or more at 12 1/4 then clouded over – Kasbek appears to be behind rather South of the monastery – From the glimpse of his centreforts he must be magnificent and 1/3 way up the horizon seen from this little knoll – The monastery handsome looking high dome-topped church and handsome tower (round topped?) clocher – Largeish handsome looking place – 5 v.[versts] from Kasbek –
The Gergeti Trinity Church, above Stepantsminda (Kasbek in Anne’s time), which Anne deemed a “monastery”. (Image Source)
A village en route about 1/2 way? up the hill or not so much – But this village flat topped like the village town here – Counted 40 squares at 6 families each these squares like little bomb roof forts or casemattes – Covered with gravel at top – Quite like a fine gravelled square to walk – 4 or 6 little round openings are chimneys for the 2d.[2nd] story the ground story has little loop holes at each side front and back which let out the smoke and give all the light there is – The fire on the ground à la Calmuck – It seems I did not over calculate houses or people the latter = 1000 an old man said his house was very ancient was standing in Peter the Great’s time –
There are 2 towers (tapering square) in the ville – The one we passed last night is quite in ruin only the 2 sides towards last night, standing, and the fog so soon hid it, could see nothing it – Appears (at the distance I saw it, from the cemetery above named) to have had 6 étages and was perhaps gathered up into a stone roof – Singular Town this – The 1st instance we have seen of the quite flat gravelled walk-like roofs of the East –
Some of the better places open into a little court the 2d.[2nd] story entered by rude stone (black schist from the neighbouring mountains) stairs and a broad balcony gravelled like the roofs – This reminds me of Mouravieff’s description of Khiva &c. Perhaps the 50 chambers of the Palace of Priam were something in this style - ∴[therefore] might be one or 2 stories high – Here the squares are sometimes the dots signify the fire places and there is no division between 2 families –
The middle part is a sort of passage divided off by a wattling – For calves &c. &c. which also seem to be admitted even into the family apartment – The people never wash – Terribly dirty – Had just written so far now at 2 1/2 – A new road from here, George says; but the old one, by Kobi, tho’ longer still the one travelled – Probably the other not yet quite monté – Inquire – From here the defile fait fourche –
Ours is the one of Terek to the right en sortant Kasbek – Paid the post horses 3 Kopek en argent per v.[verst] per horse 16 1/2 v.[versts] = 4/95 + -/12 greasing en argent – ‘Tis now 2 3/4 – Off at 2 50/’’ from Kasbek a very interesting place – It has made me understand the Ossetine Towns – The fort is 2 pieces of canon in the courtyard the sight of the Town except the 2 tall Towers soon lost – At 3 little wood bridge over little stream - At 3 10/’’ right, little distance, on high promontory of rock –
a Inn
b Mr. Bachmetieff’s house
c another corresponding house
d great court and parade yard
e line of barracks for the soldiers
f stable yard
g blacksmiths shop
h Cossack stable for about 12 horses
i large joiners shop and sort of coach house?
k post horse stable for 18 or 20 horses all one story buildings ascended by a step or two
View from a fort on the Russian side of the border. Forts like this one were common along the sides of the Georgian Military Road, which Anne and Ann are using in this stage.
1st village 1 lofty Tower 5 stories high and 2 lower Towers – All tapering square – About 6 of the squares (as at Kasbek) reckoned them at 6 families per square but they are all 2 stories high, and there are generally 6 on one floor or at least 4 families in these Sacles (Sacle signifies house in the language of the people) say 50 families in this village (but there are more?), and reckon 50 families = 200 souls just after this village that was high above us, Crocuses along our road purple and white 1st time and a thorny low, whitish little shrub covering the bottom of the Defile (Zizyphus? No! What is it?)
At 3 1/4 at the fourche a fine ravine left (saw no traces of the new road George mentioned) and a few coarse grass thatched stone huts, and enter our prong 2d.[2nd] of the fork, right, at 3 1/4 – At 3 20/’’ another fortification-like village (right) on the steep perpendicular rock, with 2 or 3 square Towers but low ones, and a little white line of mountain streamlet (misseau) tumbling down from the high summits close on this side the village – The 1st of these misseaux so common in the Alps and Pyrenees that we have seen here and on pinnacle of rock above the 2d.[2nd] village another village – Several square dry walled flat roofed stone houses along the flat bottom about a verst 3d.[3rd] wide good road –
At 3 25/’’ the village on pinnacle of rock above the 2d.[2nd] village – 2 more rock-seated picturesque villages in sight ahead of us the nearest with high tapering chimney like Tower 4th little Towerless village or hamlet left on the plaine rather in the glen defile to the left – At 3 33/’’ descend upon little wood bridge over little rapidy streamlet – 4 Ossete women on the bridge in picturesque costume mouths covered with dirty white handkerchiefs –
Traditional costumes of the people of the North Caucasus. Ossetian costumes are first from the left.
Another little village or 5th hamlet beyond the last and a peep at still another on the mountain side above the 5th village still farther in the the glen to the left
6th
8th the tall chimney-tower fortification old castle like village (vide line 7 above) on steep rocky projection high above us, left – The tall Tower 10 to 15 yards high – Narrows one half – The base seemed about 4 yards the top about 2 yards wide – One of the Towers at Kasbek seemed to narrow (to diminish) 1 yard in 5 yards of height – I could not see it quite from the bottom – The base might be 5 yards wide? –
Steep descent and drag now at 3 40/’’ down into glen (ravine) with little stream and wood bridge just below the chimney Towered village or Ossetine Town this tall small Tower seen from far in all directions – Little Tower on high rock on the other side of us opposite village no.[number] 8 – This pass has been well fortified in ancient times – The tall Tower of no.[number] 8 walled with lime – Looks a large old fortified place towards the South, out works a good way along the ridge that stretches (towards the South) up to the high mountain – The rock quite perpendicular towards our road – 2 great caves in the hill side joining part of the ridge strewed without works, more walling –
Ruined Tower &c. – Very picturesque – A little beyond us – 9 and 10 on the other side the deep ravine of river, at 3 55/’’ 2 villages on high ridge at a little distance apart one beyond and above the other – There must be plenty of common juniper near tho’ not seen by us for here we passed a Drovne on wheels loaded with it –
Astonishing the no.[number] of villages on the high steep rocks, and ridges, and bits of platforms under the high mountains – 11 another little village at 4, on the same ridge, on high point of rock above the 2 last villages there must be a little high valley between this ridge and the high mountains –
And now at 4 Terek 200 ft.[feet] in steep ravine close below us (right) – No guard – We might easily slip off the side of the narrow road into the river, a blueish, whitish, rapidy, 8 or 10 yards broad stream – Here, red, perpendicular schistose, irony? coloured mountain on the other side (left bank) of Terek, and on our left, always singularly rough, projectiony-pointed mountains –
I think there may be 2 or 3 more villages along the same ridge above named to the end of it but the mist is lowering now at 4 1/4 and all to lower than the top of this ridge will soon be hid on our right –
The bottom of our Defile becomes more strewed with big stones as well as little – The little at Kasbek and everywhere today gathered into large heaps to clear the champs which they sow with corn a small grain said one of the Ossetes at Kasbek – Blé sarrazin i.e. buck wheat? But he said it was all burnt up last summer –
12th village at 4 16/’’ with tapering not high square tower on the side of high mountain right – 13 village a little beyond and much lower down them the last on the same mountain side 14 ditto at the foot of the same mountain close upon stream? (rather far from us) an affluent of the Terek from deep glen or little valley from the North westward –
Little frozen small snow flying about now at 4 20/’’ as we toil up to higher ground a broad plateau above the deep ravine of river Terek – And in a minute or 2 steep pitch thro’ the snow narrow road along the brink of deep ravine going down to the Terek – The Courier wanted us to alight – He alighted and walked up –
15 at 4 1/2 (right) on mountain side village with square Tapering tower at a little distance above and beyond it but this village unlike all the rest has some sloping roofs tho’ looking fortress-like outside – All the villages of dark coloured stone hardly distinguishable from the rock –
High plateau of débris on each side Terek thro’ which it has formed the deep ravine – The mist covers 1/2 way down right, and now the ragged pointed summits left – We are perhaps 200 yards from foot of high mountains left and perhaps 300 or 400 yards from foot of ditto right – Some deep water courses down the mountains right but dry now –
4 40/’’ more snow on the road and mountains left much covered with snow, and very streaky right – At 4 50/’’ Kobi just in sight peeping from behind mountain head, right – At 5 steep descent from our plateau into the bottom down to the river divided into several little streams in the little basin like opening out of defile in which the dot near a is Kobi at 5 5/’’ cross little wood bridge over one of the streams still driving small snow –
d our road tomorrow
b castle
e Defile of the Terek 12 v.[versts] to its source said Colonel G-[Grauert] they say here one can go 15 v.[versts] along this defile and no farther –
c village
f ditto
16 old castle and at 5 10/’’ on rocky ridge (left) about in a line with Kobi, and at a little distance below this castle little fort-like village in and at the entrance of the little Defile to the East and about opposite another village at foot of high mountain right –
Enter Kobi at 5 1/4 thro’ little street of low flat-roofed shops about 8 on a side – Right side with little rude covered passage (portico) – At 5 17/’’ alight at our nice little stone? yellow washed Inn – This and 2 more such like buildings and the Ossetine Sâcles form the whole town of Kobi – No Krepost – The few Cossacks in low flat roofed huts near the Sacles – Delivered our 3 letters – The Prince of the place came – To be off very early – The Courier with empty carriages at 4 1/2 a.m. and we at 6 a.m. –
A-[Ann] and I went out – She sketched – I (with a soldier) went to the Sacles – Less good than those at Kasbek – 20 or 30 families or more – A neat little white washed stone church just before entering the village –
Tea over at 8 – ‘Tis now 11 5/’’ as I have just written so far – Fine day till the driving small snow in the afternoon (vide above) – Tonight they want us all to set off together – An officer and 25 men instead of 10 as the Prince said – 3 Traineaux – 2 for baggage instead of one! Our people frightened – I told George I should set off after the Courier and empty carriages – took off only pelerine and lay down in my gown and black stuff cloak at eleven and a half
Anne’s and Ann’s route on this day.

(WTT) wHaT tHe tROll?- Week 11
I would like to preface this post with a content warning as some of the topics and issues to be discussed may trigger some individuals. All sensitive topics will be discussed under the cut.
Social media platforms and social networking sites have systematically integrated themselves into becoming a ubiquitous medium and have held a "profound impact... on almost every sphere of our [every day] lives" (Hardaker 2010, pg. 223). More than 4.5 billion people have access to the internet, 3.8 billion of which are avid social media users (Kemp 2020). And whilst these internet-enabled communications and social mediums "can benefit users by providing quick and easy communication between those separated by time and space", they can simultaneously allow for "varying degrees of anonymity that may encourage a sense of impunity and freedom from being held accountable for inappropriate online behaviour" (Hardaker 2010, pg. 215). An example of this unbecoming online behaviour is online harassment - sometimes synonymously referred to as 'cyber abuse', 'cyberbullying', and 'bullying' (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 544).
Figure 1. Cyber Monday GIF. Source; Giphy c. 2020.
Cyber abuse refers to inappropriate online behaviour that makes use of the internet as a means "to threaten, intimidate, harass or humiliate someone — with the intent to hurt them socially, psychologically or even physically" (ESafety c. 2020). When women “gather ‘en masse’" into a shared public sphere, especially in an attempt to discuss feminism and feminist related discourse, "they are not uncommonly the target of negative attention from individuals, mostly men, who feel threatened by or otherwise uncomfortable with feminism" (Boyd 2012, p. 74: Herring et al. 2011, pg. 374). Women, particularly women of colour and women within the LGBTQ+ community, are more susceptible to online harassment (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 545).
Figure 2. Tech Mic GIF. Source; Giphy c. 2020.
Online harassment can be experienced as trolling. Further, trolling can be defined as the "posting of provocative, often deliberately misleading and pointless, comments with the intent of provoking others into conflict and/or meaningless discussion” (Klyueva 2013). Additionally, the intentions of a troll are to disrupt the normal communication discourse in the intent of entertaining or amusing oneself (Klyueva 2013). However, the intentions behind their taunting and inappropriate commentary may not be simply justified as personal amusement but may stem from more ‘serious’ motives including political goals (Dahlberg 2001, pg. 12).
In severe cases, online harassment can present itself as threats of violence and rape: hacking to gain personal details: the threat of, or actual, doxing: photoshopped images or videos, typically depicting graphic violence: the hacking of personal websites and Wikipedia vandalism - in high profile cases -such as the case Anita Sarkeesian during the GamerGate controversy (figure 3 and figure 4) (Gleeson 2019).
Many of the strategies employed within networked harassment, such as doxing, revenge porn, image-based abuse, social shaming, and intimidation have been refined by the ‘manosphere’ - “a set of blogs, podcasts, and forums comprised of pickup artists, men’s rights activists, anti-feminists, and fringe groups” - during the Gamergate controversy (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 543/544).

Whilst mainstream discourse typically illustrates online harassment as an issue of singular individuals being engaged in and contributing to, detestable online behaviour, online harassment is often networked in that it is coordinated and organized (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 543). From which groups can regularly “encourage, promote, or instigate systemic networked harassment against their targets” (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 544).
‘#GamerGate’ was “an online movement ostensibly concerned with ethics in game journalism and with protecting the ‘gamer’ identity” (Hathaway 2014). The hashtag emerged as a response to the challenged presence of sexism and misogyny within gaming culture towards women in their representation sparked by feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian. Since beginning her ‘Tropes vs. Video Games’ series, “which deconstructs sexist stereotypes in video games, Sarkeesian has been a persistent victim of harassing behavior, including death threats, slurs, and sexually violent language, originating from various far-right and men’s rights groups” (Marwick and Caplan 2018, pg. 543).
Social media, whilst a godsend, comes with its own unique opportunities of exploration, anonymity and community building. But we have to remember, trolling is not a game and shouldn’t be taken lightly, it can hold real, tangible consequences - with great power, comes great responsibility.

[Newsen] BTOB “Compared to No. 1, We want to go long and far”(Interview)

"More than going up, we want to go long and far." BTOB released 11th Mini Album 'THIS IS US' 8 months after 2nd Full Album 'Brother Act.’ last released. Title track 'Only One For Me’ is composed by BTOB member Im Hyunsik and Producer Eden once again after their collaboration of 'Missing You’ and ‘I’ll Be Your Man’. Results are flashy. 'Only One For Me' swept top of major digital charts like Melon once released. Based on 12th day of release, it’s still at No. 2 on 29th June morning. This is to say BTOB is receiving love not only from fans but public. Even if we put aside numerical results, the complete music with all tracks as good as title track is well-loved by fans. Members presented 7 tracks 'Call me', 'Yeah', 'Blue Moon', rapper line unit song 'IceBreaker', vocal line unit song '1, 2, 3', and pre-release 'The Feeling'. From tropical sound to electronic pop, diverse genre makes listening more fun. 'It’s Okay', 'Way Back Home', 'Remember That', 'I’ll Be Your Man', 'MOVIE', 'Missing You', and now 'Only One For Me', achieved No. 1 on digital chart every time new song is released. Trusted self-producing musician BTOB spoke about their album making process, promotion goals etc. Q Thoughts about comeback as a group after 8 months? ▲ Ilhoon_ Enjoying music broadcast promotion with various singers. We are promoting with thankful heart that we are having fun and received much love from fans. Also, we received valuable gift yesterday. We won No. 1 on MBC Music 'Show Champion' and we are really thankful. In the midst of happy promotion activity. ▲ Peniel_ Hope many people listen to our songs and receive healing from watching our stage. Q At '2018 UNITED CUBE -ONE-' concert press conference, you said you did not care about No. 1 but still achieved No. 1 on digital chart and No. 1 on music show. ▲ Sungjae_ Actually, as ‘Missing You’ received a lot of love, we thought hard of what kind of song to repay. More than burdened to produce good results, we want to provide healing to even one more person. Writing that song is of bigger burden. ▲ Seo Eunkwang_ Correct. Actually, Minhyuk, Peniel and I came home together yesterday and we talked about 'What is next song?' for 30 minutes. As we continue to receive love from many people, we are burdened in terms of music. ▲ Ilhoon_ This becomes the driving force for growth. ▲ Minhyuk_ We seem to be constantly worried. We are in an occupation to show thus we want to continue to worry and develop. Firstly, very thankful and we will work harder to show better image. ▲ Changsub_ Above all, felt very proud when we heard from public, not only fans who listen to our songs talked about how they 'Listen to BTOB music and healed a lot', 'Listen to BTOB music and start a day strongly’. ▲ Eunkwang_ That is more valuable than No. 1. Q This album "All BTOB members are producers", members are highly satisfied. What is most satisfying? ▲ EK_ Firstly, this is first time BTOB members composed all songs. That’s why the album is named 'THIS IS US' ourselves.
▲ CS_ All through us, album composed of our ideas. ▲ IH_ This album is most outstanding in terms of members’ ability. Each aspect showed much progress but this is most prominent. After a long time, we specially made 2 unit songs. We showed our individual skills through that process too. Quality is also higher than expected, thus we are highly satisfied. ▲ MH_ And our album’s character is basically and positively full of ourselves. Members’ suggestions combined to make this album thus it’s more valuable.
Q This album is completed after much thoughts, how is ‘Only One For Me’ decided as title track. ▲ HS_ Firstly 'Missing You’ received huge love and not only from fans but public. We want to present same feelings to public. Maybe when we do other styles, thoughts like 'That song is good, should do that style again' may arise. Also, instead of lyrical sensitive music, we want to make exciting music that is easy to listen to in summer. Q BTOB fans’ fanchant at music shows also created hot topic. Members seem to show ambition slowly on fanchant too. ▲ MH_ Actually, we made fanchant since 'I only know love'. We’ve been making since rookie days but started earnestly only recently. Making of fanchant ourselves is only made known to fans since 'I’ll Be Your Man' but it seems to became topic since ‘Missing You’ when we filmed fanchant video. Fanchant became topic first and there are people who then listen to our songs. ▲ HS_ Instead of coming to watch us and stand still with lightstick, it’s fun to sing together. When we write song, fanchant also appeared. During 'I’ll Be Your Man' too, 'Missing you' as well. Thought like it would be good if fans make noise at this part. ▲ EK_ Now really feel like a stage made with fans together. When we are excited on stage, fans will also have fun. Good to feel together. Melody is also our 8th Member. ▲ MH_ Different feeling from digital music. Can only be heard on stage. Like my case, I remove my in-ear to listen to fans during concert or performance. Q Lee Changsub’s intro part received a lot of praises. ▲ CS_ When I first saw the choreography video, I did not know it’s solo dance. Thus, during first broadcast, even my neck turned red. But many people love it so I’m thankful and working hard. And I’m in process of dancing slightly more naturally. Q In last year’s 'I’ll Be Your Man' interview, you said "Felt that we can still rise", "There are still a lot yet to be shown" . Still the same thoughts? ▲ EK_ Of course. ▲ Sungjae_ Correct. But instead of thinking of the place we rise to, we think of lasting a long time. ▲ IH_ There are many places to rise to but as singers there are also many places to look around. Many things here and there to experience and communicate with people around us. There are many places to rise to thus we are still going up slowly. Anyway, our digital received a lot of love and recognition but we did not have an expectation. Instead of expectation like 'No. 1 this time?' or 'Song successful this time?’, 'Will people listen to our song and touched' is more important. ▲ EK_ Now, words like going far is more suitable than rising up. We want to go further and further. We want to challenge more musically. Want to show new music. In terms of genre, we showed a lot of ballad, lyrical looks but we also want to show more performance part. ▲ SJ_ All ambition is really for BTOB to promote a long time. Any ambition is also for BTOB to make good music for a long long time.
‘Debut 7th Year’ BTOB “Cube Pillar, awkward but sense of responsibility”(Interview②)

BTOB has also felt the sense of responsibility as Cube Entertainment’s big brother group. Debut in 2012 Mar, BTOB is in their 7th year this year. In today’s music industry, BTOB is evaluated not only as self-producing team trusted to listen but also known for their out of class performance and solid teamwork. Not rushed, a team that create their own platforms for success, growing slowly but constantly. They showed intense mood in powerful performance through 'Thriller', 'Beep Beep' in early debut 2013 and 2014 but unable to receive spotlight. Starting from No. 1 on digital chart achievement of 1st full album title track ‘It’s Okay' in 2015 June, 'Way Back Home’, ‘Remember That’ ballad trilogy established their position as team loved by public. 'Remember That' won their 1st public tv music show No. 1 after 4 years 1 month. Not stopping, through members’ active participation in composing and producing, they beat competition with deep and diverse BTOB-only sensitivity and stood out in musicality even amongst musicians and grabbed title of talented team with digital power. Recent new songs like 2016 November 9th Mini Album 'NEW MEN' title track 'I’ll Be Your Man', 2017 March 10th Mini Album (Feel'eM)' title track 'MOVIE', 2017 October 2nd Full Album 'Brother Act.' title track 'Missing You' and 11th Mini Album title track 'Only One For Me' are all hit tracks composed by members that swept digital chart No. 1. Leader Seo Eunkwang on becoming Cube’s sunbae "We are still having mindset like debut days. Even if awkward but there’s sense of responsibility". "Feeling more mature naturally. We are now sunbae and must do our best even more". Im Hyunsik "We are sunbae but there are still many things to learn. We will learn from each other as we grow".

Syllabus Spring 18
Syllabus Version: 1.7 Number: INTM-SHU 101 Class Hours per Week: 2.5 Credits: 4 Semester: Spring 2018 Room Number: 823 Website: http://ima.nyu.sh/interaction-lab/ Documentation Blog: http://ima.nyu.sh/documentation/
Instructor: Marcela Godoy Email: [email protected]
Instructor: Rodolfo Cossovich Email: [email protected]
Instructor: Sean Clute Email: [email protected]
Instructor: Antonius Wiriadjaja Email: [email protected]
Description
In this course students will be asked to think beyond the conventional forms of human computer interaction (i.e. the keyboard and mouse) to develop interfaces that consider the entire body, the body’s capacity for gesture, as well as the relationship between the body and it’s environment. Students will learn the fundamentals of electronics and programming as they build projects using the Arduino microcontroller platform. Arduino is a small computer based on open source hardware and software. When used in conjunction with various sensors and actuators, Arduino is capable of gathering information about and acting upon the physical world. In addition to these physical computing techniques, students will also learn to harness the methods of traditional computation. The fundamentals of programming: variables, conditionals, iteration, functions and objects, will be explored through the use of the Processing programming language. Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the expressive possibilities of computation as they learn to author their own software, and not simply use that which has been provided to them. Additional topics will include digital modeling and fabrication using 3D printers and laser cutters, the manipulation, presentation, and exchange of data, algorithmic drawing and animation techniques, as well as control of images, video, and audio. Structured weekly exercises are aimed at building specific skills, however students are free to pursue their own diverse interests in their midterm and final projects.
Classroom Conduct
Classes begin promptly at the scheduled start time. Please arrive early so as not to be late. This class will be highly participatory with lectures being very conversational. You are invited and expected to contribute to in-class discussions.
Recreational use of phones, music players, video game systems and other portable electronic devices is forbidden. Laptops are allowed for note taking, in class work, as well as relevant research only. Activities not related to the class, such as recreational browsing of the internet, including all social media websites, email and instant messaging, game playing, and work for other classes, will not be permitted. Such activities are disrespectful to the instructor and distracting to others. Your laptop should always be closed whenever a fellow student is presenting.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of:
electricity and electrical components
analog and digital inputs and outputs on microcontrollers
fundamental programming concepts: variables, conditionals and iteration
programmatic methods for drawing and animation
code organization techniques: functions and objects
screen based and physical interaction design principles
programmatic methods for the manipulation of images, audio and video
data formats, data manipulation and data visualization
serial communication
Grading
Below you will see a breakdown that determines the grades. When grading, instructors will use the rubric described in this document.
20% Attendance and Participation
20% Exercises
10% Stupid Pet Trick
20% Midterm Project
30% Final Project
Attendance & Participation
Attendance in all class sessions is mandatory. Unexcused absences or lateness will adversely affect your grade. NYU policy does permit members of any religious group to absent themselves from classes without penalty when required for compliance with their religious obligations. If you are going to miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up the material you miss. Please let the instructor know ahead of time so that he/she can help you determine how to make up the material.
Your participation in this class is essential. Not only does it allow the instructor to gauge your interests and get to know you as an individual, but it also allows the instructor to asses your understanding of important concepts. It also provides the instructor with an opportunity to learn from your work. As a result, attendance and participation make up a meaningful percentage of your grade. Unexcused absence in more than three classes and / or labs will result in a failing grade.
Exercises & Documentation
Exercises are defined in the weekly schedule and vary weekly depending on the topics covered in class. All exercises are required, and should be documented on the documentation blog. Undocumented work will not be considered complete.
Stupid Pet Trick Project
Make a simple physically interactive device that uses the skills you’ve learned in class. It must respond to a physical action or series of actions a person takes, and it must be amusing, surprising, or otherwise engaging. It doesn’t have to be practical, or complex, as long it shows that you understand the basics of digital and analog I/O and how to use them. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “stupid pet trick,” Googling the term may provide you inspiration for the tone of this project. Due February 23, 2018.
Midterm Project
Explore Processing and / or Arduino by creating a small project that does something useful, interesting, or entertaining. Try to illustrate your understanding of the fundamental concepts covered in class. Be sure to document your work thoroughly on the documentation blog. You may work alone or with a single partner from your lecture section. Both of you should document the work individually and know about the work done in the project. Midterm projects and documentation are due the week of March 19-23, 2018.
Final Project
Create an interactive system of your choice using Processing and Arduino. Focus on careful and timely sensing of the relevant actions of the audience that you’re designing for and on prompt, clear and effective response. Any interactive project is going to involve listening, thinking and communicating. Whether it involves one cycle or many, the interaction should be engaging for your audience.
Begin the process by writing an approximately 500 word essay in which you provide a definition of interaction in your own words, propose what you would like to do for your Final Project, and critique an established form of interaction or specific interactive experience that relates to your final project. Your essay should match the grading criteria posted in this rubric. Post it to the documentation blog by April 12, 2018. Also, create a Concept Presentation for your Final Project and prepare to present.
Be sure to document your project thoroughly on the documentation blog. Include details about all phases of development, both successes and failures. You may work alone or in groups. Final projects are due May 10, 2018.

Strength in Small Networks
Recently, I have been on a mission to shrink my network. When I first made a Facebook (8 years ago in 2010) I went out of my way to friend request any and every distant connection that I came across. I would friend request friends of friends from different towns, people I barely knew, and all sorts of people. Then, it got to a point one day in 2015 where I was looking at my newsfeed and I realized that 70%+ of all the posts I was looking at came from people that I did not care about. It was a bunch of useless B.S. from distant acquaintances. Reading insufferable Facebook posts from friends is bad enough, but reading awful posts from people you barely know is almost a bad as watching Keeping up with the Kardashians. Since making that realization, I got into the great habit of deleting Facebook friends on their birthdays (i.e., if I don’t feel the urge to at the very least wish the person a “Happy Birthday”, I delete them). It’s worked great and I have now shrunk my friend list from over 2,000 to close to 800. This got me thinking about the strength that comes from having small, trusted networks. This runs contrary to many of the best (most highly valued) companies in the world (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Uber, AirBNB) that derive their value from network effects
“[...] in which the value of a service to a user increases as others use it. [...] Defensibility may, however, arise through the growth of service that gets more valuable, and more interesting, with each new participant. One nice example of this is Twitter, which is so potentially valuable because put simply, that's where the Tweets, as well as the personal follower/following relationships, reside. The value of these businesses tends to be composed of the very networks they have created.” Source
My theory is that network effects will continue to be defensible business models moving forward, especially when based on large proprietary datasets, but will begin to lose popularity in environments that are based on person-person engagement.
One of the first cases where I noticed this trend was via the company Casa, “The world's first open-source home sharing protocol.” You can watch a video detailing their current platform here, but essentially they are building a “trusted network inventory” of homes. You can think of them as Airbnb for friends and family. Rather than going on Airbnb, picking a city, “paying Airbnb to ensure trust”, and then staying at a stranger’s home, I would go on Casa, find a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, degree connection and then stay at their home, ultimately paying less because I am staying within my network and I do not have to pay for trust (more on the idea of “paying for trust” here) since I am already connected to this person in some degree.
Another area in which I have seen this effect of limited networks play out has been in dating apps. When you think about the evolution of dating apps it went from eharmony and Match.com on desktop → Tinder (2012) → Hinge (2011/2012) → Bumble (2014) → The League (2014). At each step of this evolution, the pool and criteria to pick people from has gotten more and more exclusive and detailed.
Eharmony uses it’s “matchmaking algorithm” to match you to people it thinks you would fit well with
Tinder then used the double opt-in method in which they did not play matchmaker, but only allowed people to talk after the man and woman both “swiped right” (liked) each other.
Hinge took this a level deeper and had people answer questions on their profile such as “what is your dream vacation?”, “what is something about you no one else knows?”, “what do you look for in a partner?” so that people would go a level deeper than the often “vain” approach Tinder used based on just looks.
Bumble made the process even more exclusive as only women were allowed to send the first message.
The League has now taken it to the farthest extreme by adding prospective members to a waitlist to join (whether real or false scarcity, I am unsure).
In social media, Snapchat has gone out of their way to maintain exclusivity in their platform. Snap’s original product was a non-public messaging platform for a smaller circle of trusted friends. And it is extremely popular especially amongst young Americans (source) that opted not to become members on Facebook (anecdotally, my two little sisters have Snap, Twitter, Instagram, but no Facebook). I think the rise in popularity of FB groups is also evidence of this trend. People want smaller communities, not larger ones. **I would also like to compare the frequency of posting between Snapchat and Instagram stories. (I.e., I know Instagram stories are growing, BUT I would maybe argue that Snap users post more often because Instagram stories are still inherently way more open than Snap stories). **
One of the reasons that Snap flourished was because, as Evan Spiegel has talked about, the product is focused on authentic user content and tried (for as long as it could before going public and having to answer to Wall Street) to keep advertisers and “Influencers” off/limited on the platform.
When you first make these social media sites you are excited and want to grow them fast, but now myself and others go and unfriend people. I am going out of my way to shrink my network and create a personal environment. I feel that a lot of people (unless they are trying to become “social media influencers”) follow the same trend. Patrick Collison (CEO, Stripe) noticed a similar trend (image below).
Another example of this idea of limited networks comes from 21.co (now, earn.com). 21.co enables users to email list of subject matter experts 21.co/lists - rather than blasting giant mailing campaigns, paying an agency to survey dozens of households, you can instead survey hundreds of SMEs on topics and receive answers directly from them.
The question that arises as an investor, is what are the underlying causes of this shift? Do people want more privacy? Do people want small niche groups for all their interests? Are people becoming more introverted and in turn, don’t want to interact with the masses?
Additionally, what are the consequences of this change? The one that immediately comes to mind is larger filter bubbles and less experience with diverse views.
