I feel the need to preface this by saying that I haven’t seen anyone talk about this before but if someone has pls let me know and I’ll give them credit. ANYWAY

I’ve thought a lot about death in the redactedverse and what little we’ve seen of it basically not being at all what we’d expect/were originally told. Deathwalkers weren’t meant to guide souls down the river, but to keep the sovereigns imprisoned, shades aren’t souls who clawed their way out of death, but are messengers for those sovereigns. So I can’t help but wonder if the people flowing down the river of death have to do with sovereigns too.

We know that d(a)emons form from the elision well fully formed in personality and “body” (put in parentheses because they coalesce in Aria which obviously is a non physical place). I know this isn’t technically how wells work, but what I’m wondering is what if the well pulls souls from the river of death and that’s what makes newer d(a)emons. They have no memories of their human lives because the river took them all away, but they still maintain their personalities and what they would have looked like (albeit “corrupted” from the influence the sovereigns have on the river).

The word elision basically means to omit something (like a sound, syllable, word, or phrase) or to join two things (like an idea) together. This is interesting to me because it’s kind of what the journey from the river to the well would be doing for these souls, omitting their previous lives and joining them with a new identity (if that makes sense).

Plus, it would also explain to me why Aria and Elegy are connected for d(a)emons. It’s because the Soverigns unknowingly? pulled human souls from the river of death into Aria. They weren’t destroyed because souls aren’t physical, but the journey, plus the influence from the sovereigns, warped them into something entirely apart from humankind. When the sovereigns went to Elegy there wasn’t the same hand in creation nor the same journey for the souls, which is why empowered humans managed to keep their humanity so much. We’ve seen from vampires that humans can be warped into having eternal life and feeding off of each other (albeit from blood and not emotion) so it’s not too far off to imagine a human soul could become a d(a)emon. Then as the sovereigns were trapped in death, their influence on the river was enough to keep d(a)emons coalescing in the well.

I don’t know if any of this makes sense or if it’s just the rambling of a mad woman, but I’ve been thinking about it and I think it hold at least a little bit of merit

Hello Anon, 'tis the season for such asks, isn't it? (And I recently talked too much about these creatures even though I'm not even a big fan of them?)

I think every onw has their littell indulgences in fictions far easier than certain themes, more tempting settings or creatures. For me it's dragons, for others it is vampires. This I personally don't get. Why is that sofor me? Pardon the pun but I think vampires in popcultre are remakrably defanged. At least they're very uninteresting in Western culture these days.

Dr. Jeff Holdeman said: "every age creates the Vampire it needs". Probably that can be said about any monster that cultures create creatures incarnating fears and cosmoplogy into a shaped myth. Vampires in particular are monsters created from fears of wasting, of fears of being robbed basic needs like rain for crops, draining people of energy and ressources they might barely have themselves, and a lot other anxieties- (Note that albeism and ageism are featured in these fears.) As concept the folkloric vampire can still transport anxieties into it's mythic form, there can be a lot done with it. In the Romantic and later ion Stoker's era, vampires became metaphors very often for artistorcrats sucking life forces of people socially weaker than them, breaking of boundaries. Additionally to fears of age, disability, and silent wasting diseases, came a social commentary component in anglophone literature which expands on the idea of a life sucking force can be. (Also interesting note, that Stoker might been more heavily inspired by Irish folklore than actual Central European one.) And of course what people see as silently corrupting others might differ form person to person. Meaning for homphobes, homosexuality can be a silently corrupting force. Queue Carmilla. It is no accident that in the 70s Hollywood was so fixated on the female vampire. In hindsight it is a perfect encapsulation of male fear of female sexuality. In the light of women's liberation movements soverignity women have and should have about their own sexuality stepped into the public light. Alongside the queer movement, the discovery of lesbian sex, men kinda realized male genitals were not necessarily needed for female orgasms. That breeds an entire subgenre of lesbian vampires. Apart from a homophobic literary predecessor, curious how the sexually assured woman who seduces other women, and (dentally) penetrates them becomes the monster. Speaking of sexuality. Eroticism and vampires are commonly linked these days, the metaphor is certainly there. Already with Lord Byron being parodied as a sexually exploitative vampire, Carmilla, later in cinema with Legosi, and Lee. I mean surely, horror plays with fears and tabaoos, if not fully diving into it. In times of sexualy repression the sexual component makes a lot of sense to incarnate in the modern US vampire. Not be another hater on Twilight, so much hate and ridicule was based on misogyny of a property for a femlae audience having sucess, however the vampires could've actually been any cerature as long as it was eternally youthful and sexually intriguing. (As demonstrated as the YA supernatural soft porn copy cats featuring angels and faes....) But why is Edward a vampire then? It's the animalistic appeal in him madly desiring a total normal girl into which the readers can easily project themselves into as an avatar, it's about the fantasy how badly Edward wants go down with Bella but is still safe as he will chastily surpress the urge for her virtue. There is a lot of itneresting stuff to unpack about the modern US vampire about his peak as sexual metaphor. Won't dwell to long on it because tumblr has already so many essays discussing Twilight, and vampires and (homo-)sexuality. What does annoy me, is that sexual repression is only one aspect of what a vampire can be. It follows only one branch of anglophone, and increasingly US-cultured pop-cultured, literary history centered around puritan anxieties. Don't get me wrong, the sexual aspects are there but if I have to read another Dracula take of puritanical Victorians... (For a "eat the rich" website the nobility cricism and Irish aspects are wasted... Also, wasting disease, and a certain tinge of xenophobia...) At some point that too can make a monster onesided, and repetitive if it only operates on one metpahor.

However, it is interesting that the vampire is pitiable, deserving of sympathy, maybe is romancable as endgame -monsters not being onedimensional evils anymore- falls togehter in an age where other stories very much invite the idea of understanding of the otherness as well. It can be very interesting. What is even more intersting to me how un-monstrous the monsterous is. Post Twilight, not all, but many vampiric centered shows used the mosnter as metpahor for understanding the other. But what does it say about the mosnter when it's nature is domesticated into easy alternative products, tamed, and is easily understood if it adheres to a very high beauty standart? (Del Torro's Shape of Water is the only bigscreen exception in Hollywood. I might be wrong but I can't recall much of another mainstream monster-monster romance title.) I think, there is a lot of interesting potential to continue using the monster as metpahor for understanding. Heck the compromise of it not being able to not harm the other person yet bargaining how to keep the harm at bay could make for an interesting story. The versions where the bloodsucking/lifeforcesucking is watered down to first sexual excitement just make the mosnter to a very bland idea of a sexual fantasy to me.

I mean, I know why these alterations exist like this, they're their right to exist. But in this form they simply are very boring. They're just the recycled idea of a "bad boy lover" but with a lot of money, and maybe Versailles cosplay, or dark leather, preferences may vary.

On the male side vampires are so ficking boring. Just overpowered beasts, can't die easily, there's a lot of blood, the goth imagery is there. I am looking at you Castlevania, Hellsing, and Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Perhaps every and genre era has macho hype fight fantasies. This one is so unbearbaly edgy wanna be cool to me.

All in all: Like every monster, the vampire was born out of very existencial anxieties. The concept ca be expanded onto fears of every era, and a lot of intersting things can be done out of them. A cerature that feeds of others, especially in invisible, barely inescapable ways - that metaphor can stretch so far, and play into some gerat horror ideas. Like with sexuality, abuse of social status, dealing with invisble illnesses. In previous discussions with anons they purposed ideas about vampires surviving over centuries and wirnessing history. Maybe less monstrous but also interesting to lean into what the massive passage of time can do. ("Interview with a vampire" really leans into the aspect of being stuck in time, being damned to actually remain in the age the turned person died while things still go on. Rice really wrote beautifully about the sensation of grief. So much in teh story comes back to trying to find a source for the characters' misery (the vampirism, being condemned to eternity, especially Claudia. I know, Lestat is a tumblr fave but the entire Vampire sage of hers is less interesting because it does exactly what I dislike about contemporary vampires: Defanging Lestat in his villanous aspects, swapping the more poetic stories but a more cool character image. Hearing good stuff from the show re-interpretation though.) In an age where everyone discusses class struggles, power dynamics between different demographics, word like "emotional labour" as well as clinical diagnosis are thrown around, scarcity of ressources is a big topc of anxiety, I think the concept of vampire can be easily used int stories - at least it can expand way beyond brachial discussions of sexuality. Or if leaning into sexuality, let's go back into the monstrousness. Aren't we in times talking so much about abuse? Why not make more of it? If understandig the monster why not go into also ageist and albeist origins of the the folkloric vampire? Why not talk about vampire metaphors historically harmful to minorities? They're such a rich source of ideas, and I am pretty suer that they're very good off-mainstream, outside-Hollywood titles using this creature in intersting ways. At it's current state of being afigure of "a rich, fancy seducer but within the boundaries of sexual comfort zone with a bit of excitement", or male power fantsy OP beast, they're just very unteresting to me. Both, as character and monster. (shout out to "Let the right one in", and "the girl who walks alone at night")

canon universe headcanons... sorry if these turn out slightly angouleme-centric or regis-centric...

angouleme being trained by milva in archery, because milva learned that she had starved for a good amount of her past and wanted to give her the tools so that she would never have to starve again. the fact that she struck her with the belt weighed on her still, and she wants to have a better relationship with her because she’s just young and she also reminds milva of herself when she was young, but angouleme makes it so damn difficult because her favorite thing to do is get on milva’s nerves and milva can’t ever respond by being unfazed... so milva thinks she’ll do what she knows best and what how she and her father had a good relationship... teach her to shoot. it goes well... they talk... once angouleme has the basics, they go out once a week to the caoberta woods to shoot. angouleme isn’t great, but she’s not too bad, and ends up shooting some pheasants, which she’s quite proud of. 

cahir and angouleme being trained by geralt in swordfighting. geralt one day tells cahir he wants to train him, at first cahir is slightly offended and starts listing off times when they have fought side-by-side and he’s held his own perfectly, that he was an officer, that he has already been trained well... geralt agrees, and then gets to the point - he wants to train him specifically to be able to counter a witcher’s attacks, because ciri doesn’t know that cahir has joined geralt’s company, and when she sees him again, his other hand might also lose the use of two fingers, if he’s not careful. cahir pales a little, nods with resoluteness, and agrees, thanking geralt. angouleme joins in on occasion just because she doesn’t want to be left out and also all of the hansa members who are swordfighters need constant training to ensure their skills don’t get rusty. geralt at first is apprehensive for angouleme to join because he’s afraid that she’ll remind him too much of ciri and it will destroy him, but it turns out that this is one of the activities that actually allows him to notice more differences between the two and separate them more in his mind, since their fighting styles are extremely different and he as a professional can assess that. cahir’s training is helpful for him because all of his previous training was grounded in nilfgaardian techniques and thus propaganda, the only thing on his mind was seeking honor for his family and recognition for his valor. now, he trains not for the honor of his family, but just for his family, for the people he cares about... and also, for himself, not the concept of a country...

the only people more nocturnal than teenagers are vampires... angouleme arrives back at the palace in the middle of the night, around 2 to 4 AM, sneaks in stealthily... goes in through the kitchen, thinks she’s got it made, since no one’s up... she’s halfway through when regis coughs softly, to let her know he’s there... he was just sitting in the pitch dark, reading and drinking tea, when she happened to sneak in. cue a sapkowskian witty exchange of words, in the style that yennefer and fringilla exchange words at the lodge meeting in baptism of fire, where they dance around a concept and a hypothetical. “it’s good for you that i’m human, and because i’m human, i can’t see at all in the dark. but were i able to see, i might see a girl sneaking in from committing petty crimes, with shock on her face as she’s just been caught.” angouleme is snarky at first but then through conversation realizes that regis sincerely isn’t mad at her for sneaking out and isn’t going to admonish her or tell geralt who would likely ground her. they have a small conversation, angouleme sneaks back up to her room... sleeps in the next day. this continues occuring, except these times angouleme actually looks forward to regis being there when she gets back so they can talk. and she can tell him about the various exploits she got up to, brag about what she did, because unlike the rest of the company, regis doesn’t have that human-society instinct to scold a child when they’ve been sneaking around and stealing stuff and getting into danger. it’s good for her to be able to tell someone, not only so she can get validation, but also because if something goes wrong... if something got too dangerous... she’d have someone to tell about it. which does happen eventually...

milva tends to roam around toussaint because she dislikes the atmosphere at the palace... it’s snooty, it’s stuck-up, and they always talk nonsense. add this to the fact that they’re all posing as noble lords and ladies undercover, and you’ve got a cocktail for disaster... milva fears opening her mouth and saying something deemed stupid by those in the court, and blowing their whole cover. so she chooses to walk through toussaint, and since they have a good source of money, she goes to the shops and bargains and talks to the shopkeepers. she also hunts in the caoberta woods and sells what she kills, not out of survival, but out of habit and not wanting to let her skills rest. what she didn’t expect was that the entire female population of toussaint have never seen an archer lady before, a woman with such nice biceps... cue lesbianisms. milva doesn’t recognize that half of the entire city is flirting with her, until angouleme tags along with her one day to visit the fletchery, and almost bursts out laughing at how thirsty this fletcher woman is and how oblivious her aunt is to it all.

geralt is highly intimidated by the duchess and misses dandelion. everyone in the hansa likes to roast dandelion for bedding the duchess. it’s good fun, but they never do it when geralt is within earshot (earshot is quite a long distance for a witcher), because he’s jealous and begins to pout if they mention dandelion and the duchess in his company. geralt on occassion bemoaned how dandelion wasn’t at the breakfast table, but then stopped because he was repeating himself... this worried the company, so they all pleaded with dandelion to wake up earlier so he could have breakfast with them. one day geralt walks downstairs for breakfast and dandelion is sitting there, he can’t decide whether to enter the room or just skip breakfast for the day, when the hansa spots him and invites him in. he grumbles a little “i thought you were in bed with her enlightened ladyship...” but doesn’t say much else... how do you talk to your best friend when you haven’t seen them in a month? breakfast is awkward and geralt leaves early. the hansa is quiet, dandelion knows he’s offended geralt because he’s always so damn sensitive, and lightly chases after him to the stables. there they have a genuine conversation about the marriage, one with less haste and one with less shock and anger... geralt explains that it’s not about him being happy for dandelion but rather about dandelion leaving him and the company... dandelion admits he didn’t realize it was about that, he thought geralt was fine now, he didn’t need his company anymore because he had gathered a company and was sitting in pure safety in beauclair, with fringilla vigo, no less... that he didn’t need to be there anymore, he has others... but it’s not about how many he has, it’s about who he has, and he wants dandelion’s company, too... he still needs his company, even though he has others’ now, even though he’s not alone and even though his arm and leg aren’t broken and he’s not sleeping in a soverign forest nation of dryads.

geralt and regis’ garden meetings are comically interrrupted every time they’re about to discuss something important or intimate. geralt is just about to speak about his feelings about yennefer, and a man runs past them chased by a furious duck. regis is about to discuss exactly why he feels so committed to humanity, and angouleme interrupts them with a shout. after they stop being bothered by whatever it was, neither of them feel confident enough to re-pursue the topic at hand.

angouleme bothering everyone when they first meet in tower of the swallow and realizing she hasn’t bothered cahir yet... halfway through she realizes this guy’s a fuckin lawful goodie-goodie , starts pestering him about that... she mockingly asks if he’s ever been to prison, he just softly responds "i spent two years isolated in the imperial citadel under maximum security for treason,” and leaves it at that. the entire company is silent and it’s awkward as hell... but angouleme is impressed and concedes, says they’re not as different as she thought, is glad to be travelling with him... he smiles and nods. the rest of the company exhales.

regis cooks a lot and he’s genuinely a good home cook. it helps that he has expertise in spices and herbs, and can also touch searingly hot metal with no ill effects. milva will drag in prey that she hunted early that morning and he’ll cook it. the palace chef is glad to have the day off on these days. regis also teaches angouleme to cook because she kept watching intently when he chopped green onions. angouleme also gets pretty good at cooking, one day she wants to make cookies with cahir. cahir is like “are you sure you know how to do this” and angouleme’s like duh obviously i’ve been learning so yeah. she does everything extremely well until it’s time to take the cookies out of the oven and she forgets to put mitts on and burns both her hands because guess who is such a great visual teacher.

angouleme also exploded an alchemy lab when regis was teaching her principles of alchemy but it was ok bc he tossed her out before the explosion and subsequent lighting of the lab on fire happened. he just stands there in the fire like “don’t worry you did great!"

the palace in beauclair has a hall of mirrors like the palace of versailles has IRL. regis cries a little every time he walks past (not EVER through) it.

the company once was walking through the streets of beauclair together. a dog came up and started viciously barking at regis, no one knew what to do. angouleme started barking back at the dog. it actually worked, it scared it away and then she yelled at its owner

this is more canon than headcanon but the company sits around the kitchen table to talk almost every night. and they use the kitchen as their space to hang out and meet with one another, if they’re feeling like they need company, they’ll just head downstairs and sit in the kitchen, and wait for someone else to show up... it’s a foolproof plan, or at least, it was, until fringilla also began to bide her time in there, and cahir was unfortunately the first one to find this out when he went downstairs. it was even more awkward for him specifically because after he faked his way out of that situation by saying he just wanted to get a snack, fringilla said “assire says her greetings” just to fuck with him just as he was walking out of the door

fringilla realized regis was a vampire really late in the game. about a week into dating geralt (and having regis piss her off) she’s just like excuse me geralt but i have to tell you. regis is a vampire. and geralt’s like... thank you...? for that?

fringilla also gets on milva’s nerves more than anyone else, more than angouleme because angouleme only gets on her nerves out of pure joy. fringilla does it without being being intentional, or in fact being intentional about it but not betraying that it was intentional. she asks around milva’s insecurities and whatnot, tells her that there’s this great book she read and wants to recommend milva... while knowing that milva is illiterate because she read her mind and found that out. but to her surprise, milva actually thanks her and takes the book. milva is freaking out later because she dosn’t know why she fucking did that, and goes to the company for help. they offer to read it for her but she declines, and instead demands they teach her how to read it herself. she has a week to do it, because she said she’d give fringilla back the book in a week. cue everyone losing their shit because they want to help milva but are terrible teachers. regis wants to start milva off on the continent’s equivalent of plato, while cahir is busy referring to his nilfgaardian-common dictionary. somehow she succeeds and when fringilla smugly asks her what she thought of the book, she gives her honest opinion. it wasn’t a very good book, she says this in her own way, you know, it’s not some academic book review, “the guy who wrote this makes shitall sense” and such. she’s extremely proud of herself but doesn’t show it as much as she feels it.

geralt completes many contracts and at breakfast, just as he’s about to put his feet up and sit around the palace for the day, he is visited by multiple representors of various noble houses, who are being crowded by palace guards, trying to get them out of the palace’s kitchen. geralt shoos the guards away and asks what this is all about and why it’s so urgent. they all give varied witness accounts of a giant bat flying around last night during the full moon. everyone at the table glances at regis and then immediately breaks their glance as to not raise suspicion. geralt makes an appointment with them all to meet them after breakfast... regis just butters his bread and says deadpan “i hope you get to the bottom of this, geralt”

A: He wanted to figure out if they had the political power to actually be in charge of the bridge and either prove they were trustworthy or catch them in a lie

A: Tal's notes only included what Percy knew (almost nothing) and Matt added the rest. Delilah was a lesser mage at some academy in Dwindal (sp?) and Sylas got sick so she went on a quest to find a cure and by the time she did he was dead. She got really angry and Vecna started talking to her in her dreams and slowly led her to one of his laboratories and found the rites of vampirism for a price. Necromancy is illegal in Dwindal so they were chased out, met Ripley near Taldorei and started working on Whitestone

A: Darling take the mask off was definitely a thing + vex finds edginess attractive. Percy didn't know the voice in his head was real, he was in the middle of a nervous breakdown and didn't connect that orthax was real until the briarwood arc. Orthax didn't manifest until the moment of possible vengeance.

Q: Would kiki have left if VM had continued to kill without morals?

A: Yes, Keyleth would have left to continue her aramente and Marisha would have rolled a new character

Q: What would have happened if they'd left Ripley in the cell?

A: Ripley would have tried to escape or once they'd defeated the Briarwoods she would have tried to manipulate VM into letting her out so she could abscond with VM's stuff

A: The briarwoods needed to instill fear to continue their rule, they murdered the family and left them in public, hanging from the sun tree

A: Ashley would like to think so but mostly it's because she lives across the country and she's thankful that Matt found a way for her to participate. Also she did help bring sarenrae back to vasselheim so she is special

A: She did. She didn't expect the siphon and thought she failed but they succeeded entirely. VM might have discovered that it was successful if they'd really dug in but when she resurrected Vecna started to whisper and prepare her for the next siphon

A: Keyleth would have spagettified, took a shitload of damage, and ended up in the shadowfell on the outskirts of thar amphala. It would have changed the game quite a bit. If Keyleth had died they would probably have fought her when they finally got to thar amphala

Q: Did matt plan who would die when the conclave attacked or just roll dice?

A: He planned the soverign would die to transition to the council and shock the players. He also planned out which council members would have been on the front lines

Q: Would Vax have left if the conclave hadn't attacked?

A: He wouldn't have left without Vex but Liam's not sure whether he would have left. Vex would have fought but left with him if he convinced her

Q: Did the conclave attack because VM messed with the orbs or would they have still attacked?

A: they would have attacked anyway but because they'd messed with the orbs they could recognize VM's faces and put them on Raishan's shitlist

A: Yes, and playing once every six weeks it would have happened about now

A: Very close, he wanted them to choose between the treasure that had been taken by looters and Gilmore and if they had gone for the treasure he would have been dead and they would have known that it was their fault he'd died. A: Vesh is powerful and dangerous. It wouldn't have been too dangerous but it might have caused her to meddle with VM. The deal with the RQ circumvented a lot of Vesh's possible power and the RQ would have overriden Vesh's powers. Vesh isn't really a god

Q: How did Pike feel that getting her armor (the plate of the dawnmartyr) made the difference between Daxio being destroyed or not?

A: Very happy about it. The armor was huge and getting the vestige was a huge part of Pike feeling important in battle and going into the middle knowing she'd be fine.

Q: How did Kevdak get the dragonstone knuckles? What did he want to do besides be a dragon's lackey?

A: He beat the shit out of the previous owner. Kevdak wasn't the leader but the knuckles helped him become the herd leader. He mostly wanted to expand the herd and just took advantage when the dragons disrupted whitestone. He planned to bend Umbrasyl to his will and become some sort of dragon king but Matt doesn't know if it'll ever work out

Q: What was in Senekir's (sp?) box?

A: His wife's ashes, he was being completely honest. Ashley still doesn't believe it

Q: Was Liam intending to multiclass into paladin before the RQ's tomb?

A: Yes, he was forming a relationship with Pike and was pushing towards following Sarenrae. Liam didn't want the armor at first but it was a really heavy thing for him for a while. Now he wouldn't change anything

Liam Q: Was fate-touched always going to be a thing?

A: Matt decided on the fate-touched thing because he knew that Liam was going through a rough time and wanted to give him some light but it made sense for the RQ to latch onto him in the moment

A: He didn't know what would go down and it felt good for Grog to face him head-on. If Grog had won solo it would have ended up into some sort of tense diplomatic situation with the herd

Darrin: loves that he got redemption, he planned to be less good but the goodness of VM brought out the goodness in him. "I love playing funny characters who are also tragic"

Mary: It's amazing that they're roleplaying but there are amazingly emotional moments like Vex's resurrection and it's great to completely invest yourself in creating a story.

A: The lodestones would have unsealed the elemental plane and eventually sunk Vesra. They would have had to find a new kraken to avoid destroying the ecosystem

A: It took a long time for him to get revenge on the traveling assholes, and then he got a taste for the crime power. Power tastes like pleather

A: A lot started in the letter. Even in the home games Pike and Scanlan would flirt a bit but she didn't take it very seriously and didn't think he was serious. A: It had a bunch of ancient desicrated holy objects that they had used to learn how to make the seed.
