Have you reviewed the Spardel yet? Love those silly lookin little guys

Spardels are pretty cute. They're not the most interesting petpets in the sense that they're literally just Boston Terriers, but the incredibly silly expression makes them very endearing regardless. They also seem to be popular with TNT, as they have a very large amount of colours for a petpet (27, at the time of writing).

Fun fact about Spardels: the artist that created them (Claire Hummel, aka Shoomlah) based them off her own dog. Thus, when her dog passed away, TNT added an RE to the site that gives you a special version of the Spardel, which is definitely not my favorite item of all time and definitely does not make me cry every time I open my SDB.

Favorite Colours

(Note: Sparky is excluded from this section for obvious reasons.)

Halloween: This is a very simple costume, but it fits the Spardel so well, especially with the tongue sticking out just above the edge of the cloak. I really like the green color of the fur and the spots as well; makes it look appropriately zombie-ish without losing the silly eyes.

Zombie: Speaking of zombies, you can't get any sillier than taking a pet with bugged out eyes and making them even more bugged out. The color and subtle stitches make this design work pretty well despite the very small image size limitations.

Mutant: Three eyes is literally the perfect trait to give this petpet, and I like some of the minor details as well, like the spiked collar, warped markings, and segmented tail. The colors also work very well, using a dark blue base with neon yellow and green accents (though the collar probably should've been green as well).

Least Favorite Colour:

Chocolate: Outside of the chocolate Spardel's Red Hots eyes being pretty freaky looking, it's just pretty boring for a chocolate pet. At least put some whipped cream on it or make parts of it white chocolate so it doesn't just look like an extra-brown Spardel.

the most important information in this AMA is that the void within is returning august 4

but i'll summarize the rest under the cut:

community QnA:

Q: why were drop rates for capsules not published? can there be a pity system for capsules?

A: while drop rates were initially supposed to release with the nc mall revamp but the team's taking time verify the accuracy of percentages, specifically with older capsules. it'll be released in Q3 alongside an FAQ. a pity system isn't going to be implemented for a few reasons, specifically the need for a major system overhaul on the way capsule rewards are generated and the time it would take to implement.

Q: when will the void within be returning?

A: the plot was pushed back slightly due to a shift in priority to bug fixes and performance improvements, but will be returning august 4

Q: why were new petpet colors (tyrannian niptor, woodland sludgy, brown spardel) announced but not released?

A: it was a bug that affected their petpet puddle availability (iirc correctly they were available to be zapped but not painted) but that has since been fixed and all three are now paintable

Q: can you change the NC mall survey so that 5 users are not the only ones getting exclusive avatars?

A: the NC mall survey has been changed so that everyone who fills it out will get a brand new NC mall avatar

Q: what actions will you be taking to address transphobia on neopets?

A: internal updates have been made so that moderators can better recognize more subtle hate speech and discrimination, neoboard and chat guidelines will be updated to clearly spell out the rules by Q3, staff sensitivity training has been ongoing since may and will be continuing forward to better assist reports from marginalized groups about hate speech on the sit, block functions will be improved in Q3 alongside the addition of neoboard pronoun options. TNT is taking feedback not just from the people who joined their focus group in april, but the community as a whole.

(AN: this is a very VERY good thing and i'm glad this is extending beyond queerphobia and into all hate speech. maybe the neoboards will finally be usable for players of color again.)

as for major updates:

quest log neopass updates - we already know this one but neopass has been integrated with the quest log and players can earn additional items on the site for completing quests in the mobile games tales of dacardia and faerie fragments. (AN: for ease of access download the google play store on desktop and play these games there. save yourself the phone space.)

nc mall revamp - we also already know this one but the nc mall recently got a shiny new update not just to use the new page format but to fix issues like pet preview and add one click purchase for individual items.

quest log bug fixes - the feed a pet daily quest now automatically completes if all your pets are in the neolodge, and fail safes were added for completing quests, bonuses, and streaks

wearable bug fixes - various wearables are now fixed to be visible during customization

and various other merchandising sneak peeks. i'm liking these big updates, really gives us a peek behind the curtain that i always appreciate.

gizmo is named after my dog that passed away over a year ago but i miss him dearly. i thought gizmo had weirdly pink colored reddish patches, hence why hes a pink spardel. if i could paint a sparky, i would make him pink as well but he has no colors as hes a special petpet

Learned that the Spardel was based on a Neopets artist's real life dog and that when he died this random event and petpet were released as a tribute. I think that's really good, actually.
