How is it impossible for people to understand that the Culture is the way they are by choice? If the Minds running the whole thing (or the people who built the AI that build the AI that etc that built the Minds) had decided that, no, in fact they would like to wage war on the galaxy they could be doing that.

They aren’t doing that precisely because they don’t want to.

“Class? How about …? What class is it? What are we dealing with here? Have they deigned to tell us that or is that redacted too?”

“I’ve got it down as a non-defined ‘U’ open brackets ‘e’ close brackets, sir.”

So a warship, got it.

Really, the whole scene with the Liseiden speculating on Mistake Not… is a really good way to introduce the ship to the reader without having to actually say anything about it in narration. After all, everything that’s said about it in this discussion is just what the Liseiden think, and so the narration can surprise the reader later by springing up something contradictory. Like how Mistake Not… is almost definitely a warship.

But then again. Mistake Not…, ellipses and all, doesn’t sound that weird a name for a Mind by itself, and if it hadn’t been confirmed that it’s a nickname taken from a much longer name I could have just assumed that the joke could have been that there was nothing else to its name.
