1. Philon Awards 2025: Nominations Phase is happening Don't forget to nominate your faves! In order to make it onto the voting ballot, a work needs at least 3 nominations. If you need some inspiration, check out the various events that took/are taking place during the eligibility phase (1 September 2024 – 31 July 2025). Works featuring Kirk/Spock or Kirk & Spock that were created for and published during Trektober 2024, Spirk-O-ween 2024, K/S Advent 2024, Star Trek Winter Gift Exchange, Bottom Spock Week, Live Long and Pin-Up, K/S Spring Fever 2025, and Spirk in a Cave (will happen in July) are eligible. And there were many other multiship and multifandom events (fic exchanges, prompt memes, art challenges) that also resulted in K/S works; just make sure the works you nominate fit the Philon rules. 

Important Philon dates: Nominations: 1 June – 31 July, 2025. Voting: 10 August – 10 October, 2025. Eligibility (works created & published): 1 September 2024 – 31 July 2025.

Let's fill the digital goodie bag for our attendees! Anything that can be downloaded and shared digitally is fair game as long as it has a creative or transformative element (which simply means: no episode or movie files, no unaltered stills or publicity photos)!

Here are some suggestions to get those creative juices flowing: Want to make a podfic or filk or mixtape/playlist for the con bag? Have some cool Trek-themed crochet or sewing patterns that you would like to share? An awesome desktop or phone wallpaper or digital stickers/badges/icons that members can then use on their social media? Maybe a cool recipe for K/S cookies or a lovely manip? A link to your amazing Star Trek picrew maker? Colouring pages or printable paper dolls? Send your goodies to larissa@kiscon.org until 1 October, please.

3. Panel and activity ideas for KiScon?

We will send out the big programme survey in August, but we love to hear from you sooner! If you have a great panel idea for this year's KiScon, or a specific activity you'd like to suggest or volunteer for, please get in touch: larissa@kiscon.org. We'll then include your idea on the survey.

Transiting Pallas Athene enters Cancer, pre-Retrograde Zone

Tuesday, September 6, 2022, 04:58 UT - Thursday, September 29, 2022, 15:08 UT

Disclaimer: unless Pallas Athene is a player in your chart, this transit probably won’t have much of an impact on you. (“Player”= in close aspect to the Sun, Moon, and/or an angle.)

Next, you may have noticed the fateful words “pre-Retrograde Zone” in the header. This means that:

Pallas Athene is going to enter that Retrograde Zone in the not too distant future; and

Pallas Athene is going to stay in the sign Cancer for a long time - until May 2, 2023, to be precise.

We have a bit over three weeks before the Rx Zone starts up, so let’s use the time by doing a little prep work. Pallas Athene’s areas include:

Creative wisdom and strategic intelligence - emotional intelligence will be important; we’ll need to work on that quite a bit. Dolt 45 isn’t connecting with his cult members because he’s such a powerful representative of book-smarts, you know. And remember how in Star Trek Kirk always beats Spock at three-dimensional chess? Pallas Athene/Cancer can use its intuition and its emotional sensitivity to win out over pure airy intellect.

Arts and artisans - Pallas Athene is a weaver, remember? My natal Pallas Athene is in Cancer, and when I knit and crochet, I feel a kinship working back through all my mothers before me. In other words, fiber artists rejoice! We will look into “older” techniques and patterns, and will want to create comfortable things for our families. We might see a mini-renaissance of “folk” type crafts, things to keep the old homestead/farm in good working order, and the family well fed and sheltered.

Political activism - Cancer is patriotic, and this transit can be sloppily maudlin. It would be nice to see not only some concern with children’s rights, but an actual plan to protect them. (And not the typical US politician’s “BuT tHiNk Of ThE cHiLdReN” either.) I wonder if free school lunches will be important?

Professional excellence - one downside of Pallas Athene through Cancer, is more of the “your workplace is your family” corporate nonsense. Issues around telecommuting and working at home may arise. There will be concerns about working parents, too.

It is fairly smooth sailing for Pallas Athene as she begins moving in Cancer. The only real problem happens the weekend of September 17-18, when Pallas Athene/Cancer will square both Mercury Rx/Libra and Jupiter Rx/Aries. In other words, a Cardinal t-square. All three of those thingies are associated with education; this being a Cardinal sign means it isn’t a brand-new problem, but something we’ve known about for a while but have blown off dealing with. Mercury is Rx in Libra; diplomacy isn’t working. Jupiter is Rx in Aries; crusading isn’t working either.

Hi! (I just hope you are still using tumblr...)Anyway, I found you because I was combing the internet to look for nice and fluffy pattern to crochet Spock. I found yours and - honestly - fell in love with it. Would it be possible for you to share the pattern? (if its up on any crocheting site - I'd gladly pay for it, I just could not find it anywhere).

Hi there! Yes, I’m still here. I’ve just been on an unofficial hiatus for a while. As for Spock, I’m glad you like it! It was one of the first amigurumis I made and always one of my favorites. As for a pattern, I kind of have one for you:

The above is my pattern for the basic doll shape. This will get you most of the way there. Beyond that: 

Legs - all black yarn

Arms - peachy color for 3 rows, blue the rest of the way up

Body - black for 6 rows, blue until the last row where it switches back to black

Head is the most difficult, but if I’m reading my notes properly: rows 1-9 are all black, 10-12 are the side burns (so stitch 14 black, then switch to 12 for skin, then back to black for the rest), rows 13-14 is the hair behind the ears so figure out where you’re going to place the ear and have skin in front of it and black behind it, then the rest of the rows are all the skin color

Ears - I never wrote the pattern down, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a magic ring of 6, then something like increases in the first 2 stitches to make the point on the ear, then one more row around to give the smooth edge

Eyes - 12mm safety eyes

Details - I got metallic looking embroidery floss (at least that’s what I think it was) and used that to add the starfleet logo on the chest and the markings on the sleeves

I know these extra details aren’t the best. I’m mainly going off of memory from a long time ago, back when my pattern notes weren’t the best. At the very least, most pieces are fairly small so if you don’t quite like the positioning of your color changes for the sideburns or anything, it’s not terrible to go back and adjust it (I think when I was making Spock I had to redo the head 4-5 times just to get the sideburns in a good spot).

Not feeling too hot today. Not sure if the antibiotic is breaking stuff up, if it's coz I didn't sleep well, or something else entirely, but meh. I woke up with a headache. Considering more sleep. I've been annoyed the past couple of days. I feel like I want to do something hands-on but when I look at knitting look patterns, it has been so long that it feels like I'm reading a foreign language. Also, Mr. Spock and yarn? LOL. Moo didn't behave for me with yarn either. He would lay in my mom's lap while she crocheted and not touch it (he knew better...) but if I was doing something...nope. Jerk. So it's like, I'm restless and want to do stuff but I don't have a lot of mental...whatsit right now.
