After hanging out with Sirius’ little brother for a few months now - sometimes the three of them but more and more just the two of them - James first realizes he’s in love with Regulus on a summer night with cheeks warm from sunburn and sweet red wine. They’re on an old leather couch at a party Sirius is throwing at the Potter’s beach house, and Regulus rests his head on James’ shoulder with a deep, heavy sigh. Absolutely plastered, he mutters in defeat, “I think I’m now ready to admit that I’ve probably missed my chance at becoming a mermaid.” James wants to laugh until his stomach cramps, wants to kiss him on his peeling lips and point out that Regulus turns 21 in just one week, what does he mean he’s willing to admit this now, but instead he shrugs lightly and rests his head on Regulus’. He says in that cocky voice of his that makes far too many people swoon, “You’d be the prettiest mermaid of them all” and Regulus would roll his eyes even though James couldn’t see, he’d bury his head further into James’ neck, and tell him “Yeah, James, obviously”.

And then a week would pass, the morning of Regulus’ 21st birthday, and he’d wake up before anyone else and sneak out of the house for his morning run. Sometimes on the really hot days, like the day of his 21st birthday, he’d cool off in the ocean before walking back to the house, the walk long enough to let the sun dry him a bit.

Except this time was different.

Regulus runs and jumps into the ocean, does a few slow strokes atop the rolling waves, then promptly begins to scream bloody murder in the blink of an eye; his legs have become so heavy it’s as if an overweight adult man is clinging to him. He twists and turns his body, lifts his cement legs up to see what the fuck is going on, freezes, starts drowning, then screams even as his mouth fills with saltwater.

Where his legs are supposed to be - where they used to be - there is now a beautiful emerald mermaid tail with scales that glitter tiny rainbows like the polish on his finger nails.

A mile away, the split second Regulus screams the first time, James wakes from a deep slumber with a gasp so sharp it throws him into a coughing fit. He drinks from the glass of water on his bedside table and grabs his phone before leaning back onto the fluffy pillows, pulling up his messages to text the birthday boy.

(7:02am) Happy birthday Reggie!!!! 21 WOOHOO!!!!!

(7:03am) Are u back from ur run?? Do u want blueberry or chocolate chip pancakes?

(7:04am) Had the craziest dream last night. Need to tell u all about it over some Potter Pancakes(;

(7:26am) Reggie??

(7:38am) Sirius said u never came back from ur run is everything okay???

(7:41am) Ur freaking me out Reg can u pls respond

my dear renn, i love you for asking me about this one <3

the world we knew is literally one of my babies. it is inspired by a movie (which i will name under the cut since it counts as a spoiler in case you want to know) and i hope to post the first chapter soon. renn, have you ever felt like you've forgotten something but don't know what it is? well, regulus does too, every day. in a way he feels his brain is trying to help him remember, but it all gets confusing when he finds letters and diaries he's never seen before (but are apparently his). this one is a jegulus fanfic (which is funny because from what i've written james hasn't really appeared yet) but it also explores regulus’ relationship with sirius and how much effort it takes to effectively communicate and deal with (very) complex situations when you grew up in a very hostile environment.

Great idea to share lovely fic recs (thanks for the suggestions!) and eternal gratitude to the writers that write fics in the fandom and make days so much brighter! I have likely forgotten some great fics/authors I read, but here are some of my favs! Spoiler alerts! Maybe don’t read my description of my favorite scenes if you don’t want to spoil your reading of the fit! The « epic classical »: All the Young Dudes by MsKingBean89 All the Young Dudes - Sirius's Perspective by @rollercoasterwords -> Love the social landscape depicted by both authors. From 5th year onward until summer camping holidays I am dying… then I am suffering too much over the war years to be honest… Although the ring scene at the very end of Rollercoasterwords version was weirdly comforting. These are the two first fanfics I read and I was also amazed as the gentleness of both authors with the TW section, and also loved some more political comments added mainly in the Rollercoasterwords version (such as recommendation of reads about prisons). Things that lake in a « regular » book and make the relationship with fan writers special. Only the Brave by @solmussa The scenes when they cross path while fighting each other (but also saving each other) while Regulus is deep under cover. Also the scene when Regulus has to renunciate to his cover and admit his love for James (and die for him…). I am totally in love with this fic which healed me from the canon-compliant pain….

AU but still in a magical universe: Snakes and Lions by @her-smile-forges-galaxies The one scene where the platonicity of the Moonseeker/Moonwater is very very thin… (hot!). just lovers (like we were supposed to be) by @bizarrestars Just the whole stupidity of James thinking he is fake dating without realizing he is fully down for Regulus! (Many scenes correspond to that!)

Short Hogwart fics: I Take My (Fire)Whiskey Neat (Laced with Veritaserum) by @bimoonphases Who doesn’t like a good turn the bottle trope? (Not me!) All the things they said by @jan0sh-ao3 It is a one scene but quite original, Wolfstar but pre-Wolfstar...

Lovely muggle-ish AU: Let's Play Pretend by MsAlexWP Lovely fic… I love many scenes but the cute meet one with out-of-hand-Teddy-toddler in the library and Remus cursing non-stop while profusingly appologizing for it is very funny Meet You At The Bottom by Remy_Writes5 The dialogues between flirtatious Sirius and Remus, who tries to remain in his professional role as Harry’s teacher, are very funny Players by star4daisy (Mary Macdonald/Marlene McKinnon/Dorcas Meadowes). Love an endgame poly Marydorlene but with lots of angst and a bit of smut on the way. The description of both Marlene and Dorcas, seen by Mary’s eyes, when they are partying are sapphic gold… Sorry I'm Late - I Was Searching For You by @euripidestrousers Ok I can’t tell because this will be really too much of a spoiler. I think this one AU is very original and I love it for that but can’t tell you why without ruining it… back when we were dinosaurs by epicblueblanket I loved this one! Nerdy Remus and Sirius meeting in the dinosaurs room in the museum is so cute… I'm starving, darling. by @marigold-hills The « meet cute » scene (lol - some people may not find it "cute" per se!) ! Simps & Feral Squirrels by @thebibutterflyao3 Loved the craziness of this text fic! I can’t pick a scene, it is too much of a mess! The Lab by de_sire The scene were Sirius tells Remus he is his safe place and they almost kiss (in Prague).

And as a special mention, I I love to follow on a daily basis @marigold-hills, especially right now the Dunes and Waters and @lulublack90. I loved many small fics from her for example the very starting in February 2024 Tumblr Jegulus Micro Fic Prompts(at chapter 6) and especially this first chapter of the very when Regulus can’t kill James even when faced to do it.

There’s been so much hate in the fandom the last few days I figured it’s time to spread some love.

Favourite scenes from fanfics? I’ll go first:

1. Sirius chasing Remus down the streets and them getting back together in A Brief History of Dragons by @eyra (also my ultimate comfort read)

2. Remus caving in to Sirius’ temptations to get a sandwich for a hungry child in The Fall by @euripidestrousers (also some of the hottest smut I’ve read. The altar scene? Zero notes)

3. The first meeting in Winterlude by @otrtbs (also the only fic of theirs I can read without bawling my eyes out. Some of my favourite Regulus characterisation)

i haven't had time to start the fic yet and I'm so so excited to, but I was just curious how you guys came up with the title Le Mange Dieu et le Dévoreur de Mondes bc that is one cool ass name for a fic

This is hilarious to me on so many levels and I know Green will approve of this. I'm glad you love the title because we literally came up with it today. Like, roughly 2 minutes before Green clicked "upload".

For the entire 4 months we were writing this, it was called "Green and Mar 💀". I got attached to that name, actually, sad to see it go.

Anyway, we were done editing, done with everything, and just sitting with it, waiting for the title to come to us. It's never been harder to find a title. They usually just come, you know, out of nowhere. This one was like "nah."

There's this line in the fic that goes "World-eater is what Regulus will come to call James" or something, and references to James eating a god (spoiler alert, it's Reg).

Green and I were like "this slaps so fucking hard".

And so anyway this morning/night the title was eluding us, and options were so random : glacier blue, paper cuts, blades and libraries, at some point "vows made in wine" appeared randomly, and then.

Then.

Then.

And thus, here we are.

To me, this is James after the incident with Remus being there just to bring Sirius to the heist. When Regulus is absolutely sure that James hates him and that he had lost him, but James keeps going to his bedroom every single night, even when he's furious at Regulus, and doesn't abandon him even after he's done a terrible thing

Now that it's done

There's not one thing that I would change

My life was a storm, since I was born

How could I fear any hurricane?

This is very Regulus to me. The storm part, kind of. His and Sirius' childhoods were completely different, filled with danger and expectations far beyond acceptable for children. And them having to hide their preferences because they couldn't be anything different than what their parents wanted them too. I this being Regulus talking to Sirius. Sirius ran away and dedicated his entire life to trying to get Regulus to quit doing heists, because if the danger. But that was all Regulus knew. He wasn't afraid of them, because he didn't know anything else, and, at least in the beginning, he didn't have much to lose, and he'd already lost so much.

If someone asked me at the end

I'll tell them put me back in it

Darling, I would do it again, ah, ah

If I could hold you for a minute

Darling, I'd go through it again, ah, ah

Now, this SCREAMS Jegulus. Even at the end. Even after Regulus had died, James didn't regret any of it, because it was all worth it to have been able to meet and to love Regulus. And I'm sure he'd do it all again, just to hold him for a minute more. And Regulus would have done it all again, even die at such a young age, just to hold James again.

I would still be surprised I could find you, darling

Do I even need to explain this one??? The ending??? Them meeting in every single fucking lifetime??? They'll always fing each other, in every single life

I feel like this bit is about the Black brothers. They really never knew peace. They couldn't have. And Regulus didn't really understand why he should be on the far side of things. Not the way Sirius did.

I feel like this is a bit about how Regulus was the part of James and of Barty and Evan, and Sirius, that was ripped away too soon. And I feel like the parts of the body that it takes would be James' entire body being covered in memories of Regulus touching him, kissing him, just all a reminder of him. And also how Regulus did that whole thing in Paris, where he'd kiss James in front of works of art so that'd he'd always think of him.

I would not change it each time (I would not change it each time)

Again, this is Jegulus. Regulus was always so sure that he was a bad person, he saw him in shades of grey and not colorful, like James did. I just feel like they'd be happy to go to hell, if they were to go together, and James did first want the job because he was seeking the thrill. They weren't on "the right side of things". They were criminals. So I think that explains why Heaven is not fit to house a love like theirs.
