"Has Eaten Year's Spuds: Potato Is King for 1943," Vancouver Sun. April 15, 1943. Page 1. ---- Don't rush to Sea Island to buy these spuds in the top picture. Isane Robinson is going to plant them on his farm next week so that you may eat the multiplied harvest next winter. With the aid of friends who come out on week ends from Vancouver and what labor he can hire at $60 a month and board Mr. Robinson will try to put between 60 and 80 tons into the civic lander. His own opinion - which is widely shared - is that there wouldn't have been any shortage of potatoes if growers had not dropped out of the business in former years through "disgust" at the operation of the Potato Marketing Board.
About the middle of July Vancouver may be eating the results of the labors shown in the middle photo. Workers on the farm of E. M. Molyneux near Cloverdale are dropping the seed potatoes at regular intervals in the furrows turned by the proprietor's team. The guess that the harvest may be ready for the table three months from now is based on the assumption that the floods which destroyed 11 out of 15 acres on this farm last June will not be repented.
Lower - Magistrate Henry Bose of Cloverdale, resident of the district for 3 years, points to one of the potato fields on his completely mechanized farm. Mr. Bose raised 208 tons of tubers last year. One reason he didn't raise more was that the floods of last June wiped out 12 acres. This flood, together with the blight farther up the Fraser Valley, contributed to the present scarcity. It destroyed about 4000 tons in the Surrey district alone, according to actual records compiled by the Farmers' Institute, of which Mr. Bose is secretary.

i really love how the first clip they gave us is the new years party
i know it’s to avoid spoilers and i’m also 99% sure what i’ll say here was not the actual intention but to me it serves as a reminder to those who’ve been fixating more on the angsty aspects of the season (of whom there are even more now after the stills have dropped)
like, yes, it’s going to be sad, but this is what it’s all leading to. no matter how dark it gets, they (and we) are going to get here:
