The weather birds had said that a big storm was on the way at the end of the week – in fact they were calling it a "weather bomb", which Algy thought sounded most undesirable and unpleasant.

Concerned lest his favourite patch of snowdrops might fall victim to this bombing by the weather, Algy decided to inspect and encourage them while it was still calm. It was another dark grey day, but as he perched on the bare ground among the hardy flowers, a wee gleam of low light made them sparkle and shine in a most delightful way, and he was thrilled to see that in addition to the clumps that were flowering, there were many self-seeded baby snowdrop leaves pushing up through the soil beneath the bushes, to bring even more flowers in future years.

Of course snowdrops always reminded Algy of a famous poem by Wordsworth, but he could hardly agree that they were like an unbidden guest, for he waited eagerly for their appearance every year…

I originally meant to use nettle instead of cocoa peel, for a more herbal blend, but I had a craving for magnessium. As for the cocoa peel, you can exchange it for regular cocoa powder; I totally get how hard is to get the peel. :) And feel free to make any changes in case of allergies.

The wind did indeed blow Algy off his perch, and the clouds continued to descend until the Scotch mist closed right in again and the world beyond Algy's home was obscured once more.

Deciding that, even for a fluffy bird, it was daft to remain out in the open, exposed to the vicissitudes of the wild west Highland weather – and having tumbled off his seat once too often, in a particularly strong gust – Algy retreated to a much more sheltered spot, and settled down on the bare earth beneath some leafless bushes in his assistants' garden…

And there, to his delight, Algy discovered some wee glowing patches of hope and light, for the very first snowdrops of the new year were about to open their faces to the world, despite the dreich January weather. Looking around, he spotted many more patches of the "flowers of the snow" emerging here and there, sensibly sheltering beneath the trees and shrubs, and then Algy smiled a great big fluffy bird smile, for he knew that although the day was dark and dreary – not to mention wet and windy – spring was surely on the way 😃

Leaning forward, Algy whispered one of the very few poems about snowdrops he could remember to the wee, nodding flower buds, and urged them to ignore the miserable weather and smile too…

Flower of the Snow!—we hail thy birth, Though cold and pale may be thy shrine, A promise from all bounteous earth To glad our northern clime. Thou com'st to soothe us, star-like flower! To check our dark despair; And in the dim and wintry hour To whisper God is there. Sweet gem!—how like a faithful friend Dost cheer our lonely hearth, And, mid the world's unkindness, lend Thy light around our path.
