Ok this has come up a couple times now in the tags, and I love this little detail because it highlights a historical inconsistency - namely, that Smeargle's default palette had a red tail, not green!
But wait, I hear you say, no it wasn't?
And you are half-correct! Ken Sugimori's official art for it utilizes green for it's tail!
However, in the actual games for Gold, Silver and Crystal, the green tail is the shiny sprite!

(Gyarados as an iconic comparison so you can see the serebii site formatted it as Normal on top row and Shiny on bottom)
This is further emphasized in spinoff media - especially of the Gamecube era, like in Colosseum, or also in the game Pokemon Channel!
(^ Interactive item unlocked for the channel Smeargle's Art Study)
That said, other glaring inconsistencies crop up during this time period - Pokemon Channel itself contradicts itself as a matter of fact!

Smeargle's Art Study intro card - utilizes a green paw print for a signature [playthrough source]

The same channel - Smeargle the host, with a bright red tail. [Playthrough source]
Pokemon Channel adds further confusion with its special Pichu Bros short - in the introductory short for the pichu bros, a smeargle with a green tail is seen:
However, in the Gamecube special "Pichu Bros Party Panic", this smeargle has a red tail (barely visible but it's there):
(Let me just say I'm uncovering half of this info as I search for image evidence lmao)
So by this point, Gamecube era... well that's Ruby and Sapphire days, isn't it? Gen 3! So what color were smeargle sprites then?

Hoo boy.
This is where things get exceptionally messy, but I do believe I can see what happened here.
In the transfer from generation 2 to generation 3, a lot of palettes were tweaked, normal and shiny. I think this was largely due to a mix of factors - a) more color range to work with, and b) it was an opportunity to make any last changes to the palettes that'd be excusable. I suspect in an effort to stay consistent to the official art by Sugimori (and main anime appearance), they swapped the Smeargle's colors around.
However. The Gamecube games, Colosseum and Channel, were made by external teams. Furthermore, they both predate Firered and Leafgreen.
Why is that second part a problem?
Because Firered and Leafgreen are the first mainline games since GSC to have Smeargle naturally occur in-game.
Meaning that beforehand, Colosseum was ostensibly the only game you could get your hands on a smeargle naturally - and, if you so chose, imported it into Ruby or Sapphire.
Only THEN, would you see that those games have data for the new and improved green-tailed smeargle, and not a moment sooner. Otherwise you'd be none the wiser.
All in all, I speculate a lot, but I would love to be a fly on the wall during Smeargle's development, because it's clear, more than ever, that no one knew what the FUCK was up with Smeargle's palette until FRLG, at which point the whole debate could be conclusively laid to rest, with all following games and spinoffs following suit accordingly.
But when it comes to Joe "Team Snagem" Biden and his Smeargles, I think it's safe to say either miscommunication played a big part, and/or the model was made early on and just never fixed. His is NOT a team of shinies, no matter how much he wants them to be. :) just a passel of red-tailed oddballs, a relic of what would soon become Smeargle Past.
[All other images not otherwise sourced from bulbapedia]

Why don't I see more people talking about President Biden's shady past as an animal smuggler smfh
#this got away from me#anyways happy 1k! i present a late night deep dive into smeargle that no one asked for lmao#smeargle#pokemon colosseum#pokemon channel#rse#frlg#gsc#ken sugimori#long post#ramblingonandon

Would you ever play any of the old Pokémon games? Maybe not the Kanto games since Let’s Go was pretty recent, but maybe Gold/Silver/Crystal or Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, or Diamond/Pearl/Platinum?
You mean if I would be able to return to them? I started with Gold but I wouldn’t want to play the old Gold again because HG has everything better. With one exception and that’s Lance’s theme and sprite (he’s younger and hotter there). But that is not enough content to make me play Gold again. Two main reasons that speak for all: HG has female protagonist. HG has Pokemon following you. And tons and tons of other things - HGSS is my second favourite title after BW. The colors, the sprites, the content and the small additions to it (like ?! Unown quest, LANCE DUO BATTLE FRICKING YES YES YES, Ho-Oh theme etc.) Oh, yes, one thing I missed in the remakes was my mother buying me things to design my room with. She once bought me a giant Lapras plush and I loved it SO MUCH.
Would I be able and willing to replay RSE? Yes. These games have magic that the remakes couldn’t quite capture, perhaps because 3D can never have that much soul as nicely colored sprites. As much as I love the remake OST, they removed the horns (WHY) and the intro theme has half the impact the original had on me because of this. The old RSE has also the magic of... unavailability. There are many cool things coded in the game that you can’t get or it’s hard. Wyanaut island. Eon Ticket and the second Lati. ORAS makes everything too easy to get (the disease of the newer games and a side effect of network trades). One Latias joins you automaticaly and you go to the mysterious island by default. I miss knowing that the island is there but without having an actual Eon Ticket code from Japan, you can’t go.
DPPt is a specific case. I couldn’t play these when they were actual and to avoid the pain and deprivation, I cut myself off Pokemon for two years or so. I never managed to reconnect with Sinnoh even though I later finished Platinum. I love few standalone elements in these games, such as the Distortion world (Okay, that’s just Platinum) but else I really, really don’t like the region. Somehow it’s a real pain for me to go through it, especially the first half. Also the music is probably my least favourite of all Pokemon games. Cynthia, Palkia/Dialga, Lake Trio, Cyrus and Barry ROCK HARD but the common themes - cities, routes and classic battles - I don’t like them at all. So I’m looking forward to remakes because I believe I might actually really enjoy Sinnoh for the first time with the new/improved content.
(Thanks for such a neat question! ♥)

master ball, great ball, fast ball, nest ball, heal ball!!
master ball was answered!
great ball: favorite pokemon gameit’s between crystal, emerald, and sun/moon and now it’s story time!crystal as a kid i thought i was “cursed” with... we bought it and whenever i wanted the new pokemon game my dad would always have me trade it in until i was old enough to buy on my own around when the ds games came out. there was some other game i wanted to trade in my it didn’t have the sticker, so i replaced it and for some reason they didn’t think it wasn’t a pokemon game and took it. as a result, i couldn’t trade in crystal! especially since it was the last gba game i got/owned. i came to love it cause it really came in handy during the dark ages pre gen 2 remakes AND BOY WHEN GEN 2 REMAKES WERE ANNOUNCED I WAS SO THIRSTY! i would check all pokemon news sources DAILY and i played through crystal 3 times that summer lol that aside, i also played crystal a bunch as a kid. it was the only game i had when 3 category 4/5 hurricanes hit here and i was out of school for a while. playing it kept me sane as we were stuck inside with no power. also since yellow was my first game and i didn’t get to choose a started, i really loved being able to pick my starter which is why typhlosion is my fav ;-;
emerald cause i really love gen 3... gen 2 too but it was SO AMAZING seeing the first commercials for sapphire and how everything was full color and how things were improving! everything that was added was so much fun to learn? abilities, berries, held items, etc... i played through sapphire a whole bunch until i let a friend borrow it and he never returned it... then emerald came out and i was stressin so much to get it... i was finally able to get my sapphire back after telling on the guy to his mom while i was crossing the street >:) i was so happy i went home right away and started playing a new game and i felt such a nice rush? you know the rush when you start a new pokemon file. it made me so happy... ALSO the battle frontier was so great AND gen 3 was the last pokemon games where kids in my neighborhood cares about pokemon. i had sapphire first and most others had ruby. the games even got this kid who was a real fuckin bully towards me to become friends... we ended up trading and i finally got a zangoose and we were gonna reenact the legendary battle between kyogre and groudon but he left cause he was visiting... even tho most of my memories are with sapphire. gen 3 remakes were also highly anticipated CAUSE MY FAV? i remember waking up and people were like GEN 3 CONFIRMED and i immediately woke tf up and i was screaming i kissed my pokemon emerald poster my acne cleared up and all was right in the world... and boy.... BOY... wheni started up alpha sapphire and watched the opening i had to put it down. i started crying. i’m crying right now. i love gen 3. i chose emerald cause of it’s addition of animate sprites and battle frontier. also i still have it...
sun and moon WAS SO GOOD AND SO MUCH FUN!! last summer was hard but sun and moon news kept me going and was the light in my day. i was super excited like everybody else and UGH rockruff. i remember when the news of green and red being in the game came out. i was driving to class and i always get there early and my friends were like “CAKE LOOK AT THE POKEMON NEWS” and when i saw my boys? all grown up? i started crying in my car. there are pictures and this guy was concerned but i was okay cause pokemon. i am honestly a little upset that blue wasn’t in there (or green for the female character idk i go by the japanese names cause of pokespe) but i understand since she technically doesn’t exist on her own as a character...... but still... looks at people’s art of all three in alolan longingly at what could have been. THE POKEMON ARE SO GREAT TOO! i just wish it was easier to find alolan pokemon in game? like a lot of alolan native pokemon had lower encounter rates than the pokemon from previous gens... which kept me from getting bewear in my first play through >:( (idk why i didn’t trade... i was too engrossed in the story). I LOVE ALL THE ALOLAN FORMS. i remember there being “leaks” for alolan arcanine where it was water type.. a girl can only dream... also everybody in sun in moon is my friend and family. hau? my best friend. lillie? my best friend? kukui? my dad. burnet? my second mom. olivia? my wife? gladion? remember when he said we were friend, hah, what a kidder, we’re also best friends. ALSO GUZMA THEME AND VS TAPU GOES OFF. like when i am driving and i hear the little intro part for all skull battle themes but then it goes to the start up of guzma’s i AM READY TO JAM. I WILL PULL OVER AND START JAMMING. also the champion theme makes me cry every. single. time. incorporating the pokemon series theme... how could they do this? don’t they know i gotta drive without tears in my eyes?
fast ball: favorite way to get around in pokemon gamesprobably bikes but hoenn bikes so i can bust some sweet wheelies just like i never could irl
nest ball: favorite regionsame as my fav games... it’s a fight between johto, hoenn, and alola....... it MAY be hoenn... i can’t commit man...
heal ball was answered!
