Believe In Being Better
The recipe for a perfect cup of coffee? For us it takes a little bit of early naivety mixed with a healthy dose of youthful optimism and a whole lot of love.
What started out as the adventure of a young couple on Salt Spring Island in the early ‘80s didn’t take long to take root as a lifestyle and value system that our founders, Mickey and Robbyn, have instilled into every aspect of Salt Spring Coffee.
From not knowing much about agriculture and farming, to becoming staunch believers in the importance of not using pesticides or artificial fertilizers our founders, and thus Salt Spring Coffee, have come a long way since those early days.  Yet through it all both founders and company have managed to not deviate from the original intention of growing organically.
However, coffee was not the original intention and we all owe thanks to Robbyn for the influence of her California upbringing that left her with the great combination of urban savvy and thirst for freshly roasted coffee.
Two peoples' love of good coffee started with the experience from Caffe Triesta in San Fransico which inspired a small, organic roasting and grinding facility on Salt Spring Island, all being done on the homesteads’s old wood stove.
So the question remains, when did the leap from homegrown hobby to grown up business happen? In 1996 Mikey and his brother Ross opened the doors to the first roasting cafe on Salt Spring Island and haven't looked back since.
The rest, as they say, is history - a history that has included becoming certified organic, certified direct fair trade and operationally carbon neutral - plus a lot more sleep than those early days back on Salt Spring Island.
