04/08/24-Sunflower in the garden good to see one out a strong symbol of summer, a resplendent Silver-spotted Skipper at Perham Down among my first of the year today an excellent few minutes watching them fizz around the meadow and still, views at Shipton Bellinger and St. John's-wort and wayfaring tree berries at Perham Down.
I also enjoyed seeing beautiful Bullfinches at both locations, Rooks, Buzzard, Magpie, lots of Meadow Browns, Gatekeeper, Common Blue, Peacock, Red Admiral, Large White, Brimstone, creeping cinquefoil, rosebay willowherb, wild parsnip, eyebright, woolly thistle and exciting views of my first ever Tawny Longhorn beetle and Purple Bar moth.

Photos above are from a trip into the mountains yesterday. I managed to get out to Lindy Point in the Blackwater River Canyon before the overlook was swarmed with sightseers (top two photos). The rhododendron is blooming now - the drive in from Blackwater Falls State Park is magical this time of year. As it descends through the canyon, the Blackwater River transforms into turbulent whitewater, but just above the canyon, where it turns out of Canaan Valley (5th photo down), it's a gentle, serene stream perfect for floating. I also tried out some different trails in Yellow Creek Natural Area and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The lowbush blueberries are ripening now - a sweet little snack to improve the hiking experience. :-)

No one, not even a fluffy bird, could say truthfully that today was a lovely day in the wild west Highlands of Scotland. Even at noon it was dark, because dense Scotch mist was blocking out most of the light; the wind was blowing, the rain was raining, and – especially if one was already wet as a result of these phenomena – it felt unpleasaantly cold, although in reality the temperature was nothing like as low as it was around the homes of many of Algy's friends in the northern hemisphere. But it's one thing to be cold and dry, especially in calm weather, and quite another to be cold and wet in a constantly buffeting wind…
However, as Algy perched damply in a hypericum bush, rocking resolutely to and fro in the wind and the rain, he suddenly noticed with glee that there were brand new bright green leaves coming out all around him, on stems which only a week or so ago had been almost completely bare. Despite the unpleasant conditions, he was truly delighted to see them, but as he grew damper and damper and colder and colder, he couldn't help reflecting that it was a pity that the weather in this part of the world so rarely permitted comfortable appreciation of the joys of the early spring, for:
In spring a bluster busting up against a wall will lift last year’s leaves higher than trees did.
[Algy is thinking of the short poem Resurrections by the 20th century American poet A. R. Ammons.]

Urban foraging on my break. Oregon grapes and a type of St. John's wort (not the medicinal variety).
Gonna try some dyes with them. I've done lots of natural dyeing with oregon grapes, but nothing with StJW. Im not at all sure it will dye, but you dont know until you try it !

Yet more gifts of Appalachian summer.
I've been on a mission to catalogue as many of Central Appalachia's summer wildflowers and berries as possible for an online project I'm starting up. Above is the haul from yesterday, including the stunning orange-fringed orchid (Platanthera ciliaris), a grand summer orchid of Appalachia's wet seeps and meadows. Downy rattlesnake plantain (Goodyera pubescens), another of our summer-blooming orchids, may not be quite as showy, but its intricately-patterned leaves are quite striking. Turk's-cap lily (Lilium superbum) is also in bloom in our local wet meadows and swamps. It's distinguished from its close cousin Canada lily by more strongly recurved petals and a green, star-like pattern in the center of its flowers. A single Turk's cap lily can produce dozens of flowers from its rangy stems. At home in moist woodland edges and streambanks, summer phlox (Phlox paniculata), sometimes also referred to as fall phlox and garden phlox, produces loads of gorgeous pink or white flowers from mid-July through September. Because this phlox is commonly planted in gardens nowadays, it's hard to know if plants in the wild are true natives or escapees.

Tsunayoshi Sawada (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)

Name: Tsunayoshi Sawada
Series: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Gender: Male
Status: Alive
Family: Iemitsu Sawada (father), Nana Sawada (mother)
Flower Motif: St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Flower Meaning: Healing
Weapon of Choice: Tonfas
Associated With: Interdimensional Hero Club
Hero Form Appearance: An epic combination of a mafia boss outfit with YuYuYu’s Hero form outfits. The undersuit is a brilliant black so that the yellow and other lighter colors begin to stand out more. The outfit is a bright yellow fading straight to a fiery orange and then to red, with green, white, and silver accents being throughout the outfit to complement it all. The shoes are a mix of dress shoes and sneakers, while the jacket is something out of a 1950’s flick. The St. John’s wort’s petal shape is in the tailcoat, pants, sleeves, and the wristbands. There’s also black embroidery patterned in the style of the St. John’s Wort throughout the outfit (Especially on the shoes and gloves), and Tsuna’s hair remains unchanged save for a hairclip resembling his flower motif. The only other accessory? A St. John’s Wort tie clasp. Reborn has a similar get up, but it’s smaller and more his size.
Full Bloom Gauge Location: Tummy
Guardian: Erchu (Based on the Erchitu)
Favorite Food: Lasagna
Parallel To: None
Bio: Tsunayoshi Sawada is the tenth Vongola boss, and the holder of the Sky Ring. A fourteen year old Junior High student that fails in just about everything he pursues; receiving terrible grades in school, failing at sports, and unanimously regarded as a loser by all of his peers, to the point of receiving the nickname “No-Good Tsuna". However, His life changes after coming home from school one day to meet an infant hitman named Reborn who informs Tsuna that he is a descendant from one of the most powerful Italian mafia families and will be training him until further notice. At first, Tsuna is in disbelief of this revelation, until he is shot in the head with a bullet that temporarily kills him and brings him back to life with all limitations removed from his body, allowing him to use the power of his Dying Will and perform incredible feats.
Note: He has the same flower motif as Utano Shiratori from Nogi Wakaba Wa Yuusha De Aru.
