(Talking about Stack potentially harboring feelings for Annie and why this is all MBJ’s fault lmao)

As a die hard Smoke x Annie fan, I’ve really been curious about this thing going on about Stack potentially having feelings for Annie at some point in their lives. Anytime it’s mentioned in a fic, I’m just like yo this makes sense lmao. Because it would make a lot of sense for Annie to have given the town a stir when she moved there (that woman is too fine GAWD), and Stack (likely being the player he was in his youth) would’ve for sure tried to get at her. But all of this aside, I think one of the biggest reasons that a lot of people have been speculating this is, of course, the scene of Stack biting Annie. That scene was…. sad ofc and very heartbreaking, but it was also very telling of MBJ and Wunmi’s chemistry and just how insane it is.

Wunmi has said in multiple interviews that Michael as Smoke and Stack physically and mentally felt like completely different people to her. She was able to tell them apart with her back turned, and she felt a visceral pull towards Smoke that she didn’t feel at all when MBJ was Stack. This is extraordinarily impressive of Michael, and it shows in the movie when Annie only gravitates towards Smoke, even when she doesn’t have to. Her and Stack are always at a distance, whereas her and Smoke stick together like glue.

But here is where I blame MBJ for what occurs in Annie’s death scene. I don’t know what the script said of course, and Ryan very well could’ve written this all to occur. But the way in which Stack goes in for the second bite was ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from the way the vampires bit anyone else. One thing I loved about the vampires in this movie is how they don’t make the biting seem like a sensual or intimate act (like in most vampire media I’ve seen). It’s animalistic, violent, and downright horrifying. That second bite from Stack…was none of the above. And I would bet my life’s savings that that was purely Michael B. Jordan. Because unlike Wunmi, Michael isn’t distinguishing two characters in Annie. And in this very emotional moment, Michael is biting someone who he’s spent all of this time and energy growing a chemistry and care for. So even if it was a moment where he slipped up (cause I’m ngl guys…I think I heard him moan a bit too, BUT THATS JUST ME-), I truly believe that part of the scene was not intentionally written to be that way.

And Wunmi ofc had her little slips as well (her hand caressed down his arm at some point like come on), so I feel like she also could’ve slipped past the “This is Stack” feeling she’d had in other scenes with him because of how emotionally charged this particular scene was. It was also a vulnerable scene for them, and one thing they have both talked about a good bit is how the other made them feel very safe and comfortable. So in a vulnerable scene where they aren’t Smoke and Annie, it still naturally pushes through.

Saw Sinners for the second time today. I must say I'm sad it's not in IMAX everywhere. There's a difference for sure, but it's still a masterpiece. I actually cried more this time around after having full understanding of the interpersonal connections and backstories.

Michael, Michael, fuckin Michael... I don't know what else to say. lol He played twins flawlessly. His chemistry with Wunmi and Hailee was perfect. I'm sure it was challenging and draining to do both, but he succeeded.

Sidenote... seeing it a second time has me FULLY believing Stack had a thing for Annie, but she was drawn to Smoke. No one can convince me otherwise!

They better do a clean SWEEP come award season. It's in my favorite films of all time list. 🥹

Smoke and Annie were and look the same age. I know you lot aren't USED to seeing dark skinned Black women as love interests (especially plus sized ones) on screen but seriously, get a fucking grip. There was NOTHING to suggest she was any grown man's mama or sister. That is called bias.

I love them general theme of “I want to go home” in Sinners. Cause home means so many different things for so many different people.

It’s in when Bo heads outside because his wife wants to go home and his wife cradles him in her arms as they both die, because she told him they were going home and she would not let him go alone. 🥺😭

It’s in Mary trying to refind her place in the family that raised her but getting kicked out to keep her ‘safe’. She doesn’t want to be safe. She wants to be home.

Home. Home for Sammie is music and not the tight fisted hand that his father uses to rule the house that he used to call home.

Home for the Moore twins is also different, because Stack has always denied himself Mary, and Smoke has lived his entire life trying to protect everyone and everything he holds dear. Finally letting go of the tight reigns when Annie beckons him home.

Home for Annie is her culture, her baby, and her man. 🥺

And there’s the other side characters, like Slim who dies for his home. Not for the segregated life they are living but for the sake of the younger generation to hopefully create a better home.

And Remmick is so far removed from his home, that he doesn’t have a place to return to. So inadvertently burns down and destroys the homes of others because he is reaching for a place to call home.

And the native Americans, 🥹 doing good in the world, saving people from monsters and beasts. Never ever forgetting to heed the call to go home, lest they stray too far into the darkness.

Caving to my desire to see Stack and Annie kiss. It’s a cute fic more than sexy, but I like it.

Thinking about how stacks last words were "Smoke, I'm so scared. Love you."

Thinking about how Smoke pulls up Stack's pants to give him some dignity.

Thinking about how as he pulled up Stack's pants, he probably thought about dressing Stack to lay him to rest in his favorite suit and that may be part of the reason he snapped "this ain't no dead body, its Stack" at Annie to correct her and himself.

Thinking about how despite clearly telling Annie he doesn't believe in her hoodoo hours before, even cheap shotting her with asking "why didn't it protect our baby", he begs her for her power and skill to bring Stack back.

Thinking about how Smoke sits there holding Stack, his brother's blood covering him like the heaviest sin he's ever had to bear, not keeping Stack safe.

Thinking about how Smoke had gold on his teeth too on the other side, but we never get to hear people talking about it because he doesn't speak much and doesn’t smile until the very end, holding his daughter.

Thinking about how Smoke seems to almost view Stack's death as his own failure. How he can't go through with staking his little brother and cuts a deal. And how in doing that, Smoke allows himself to go handle Remmick, and later the Klan.

Thinking about how Smoke chose to stay behind and get rid of the klansmen. How all those people in the juke died on his watch, and he gets the opportunity to eliminate one more threat, and the excuse to not go on with the grief of being alone.

Thinking about Annie being the narrator even though the story doesn't follow her. Thinking about how she could be recounting the story to her baby while they wait for papa.

Thinking about Annie's wisdom and skill saving them at multiple points.

Thinking about how they all defer to Annie at once, no questions, and never dismiss her.

Thinking about how Annie's wisdom would have gotten them through the night. How Remmick saw that and knew that the weak links were going to be Grace and Smoke, playing their loved ones and facts against them.

Thinking about how Remmick seems to remember from cornbread in particular that Annie is clever and is thus a threat.

Thinking about how even though Annie is using Divination to foresee any hope, when she doesn't she meets that with understanding and grace as she tells Smoke what has to be done.

Thinking about how close Annie must have been with Mary. Mary was devastated enough to break the hive mind, and have Stack attempt to get her to safety.

Thinking about how no nonsense but still compassionate Annie and Smoke were.
