Well, I read 13 books in October (spooky!) and 12 in November, so this might be a realistic TBR! Not too sure of that lol

finished the alchemist!
Tumblr media
just finished the alchemist by paulo coelho (2025-06-06 to 2025-06-29)! i'm gonna rate it 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
there were a lot of bits that i really enjoyed, and i thought the story was very touching. i also thought that the illustrations were simple but impactful. i love when a novel has a little bit of flair like that! i also have some knowledge of alchemy, which made this read all the more fun. :)
my main gripe with the story was fatima's characterization (or lack thereof). after she and santiago fall in love, he becomes the only thing she seems to think about. she's lived in the desert all her life, but now the only thing that it means to her is that one day santiago will return? it was frustrating for the only named female character (iirc) to be reduced to waiting for her man to return. since this didn't impact the story that much, however, i didn't knock my rating down too far (especially since i really enjoyed the rest). just a bit irritating, you know?
overall, i really enjoyed the story and thought it was well-written (assuming the translation is faithful to the original)! the simpler language makes it more impactful in a way.
next read is creative community organizing: a guide for rabble-rousers, activists, & quiet lovers of justice by si kahn. my dad got it for me for free from a bookstore and it seems... timely, to say the least.
some of my favorite passages and quotes from the alchemist below...
"'tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. and that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with god and with eternity.'"
"'this is what we call love,' the boy said, seeing that the wind was close to granting what he requested. 'when you are loved, you can do anything in creation.'"
"'that's what alchemists do. they show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too... love is the force that transforms and improves the soul of the world. when i first reached through to it, i thought the soul of the world was perfect. but later, i could see that it was like other aspects of creation, and had its own passions and wars. it is we who nourish the soul of the world, and the world we live in will be either better or worse, depending on whether we become better or worse. and that's where the power of love comes in. because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are.'"
"the boy reached through to the soul of the world, and saw that it was a part of the soul of god. and he saw that the soul of god was his own soul. and that he, a boy, could perform miracles."
"'...this payment goes well beyond my generosity,' the monk responded. / 'don't say that again. life might be listening, and give you less the next time.'"

So ignoring my pathetic excuse for a bedroom.... A Facebook group I'm in talked about favourite authors and how much of what they have done that you had. Soooooo...... I stacked up what I have from Neil. Books and DVDs a CD and even a VHS copy of "day of the dead" I have some fragile comics I didn't include in the stack for fear of damage and I also noticed I had four books still on my dresser after I took this picture. 😒 so it's most of what I have... I have shirts too. (Obviously not shown)
