Karen Knorr’s Belgravia, describes through images and accompanying quotes, class and power amongst the international and wealthy during the beginning of Thatcherism in London.

Produced between 1979 and 1981 the images are now available for the first time in a beautiful artists monograph. Measuring 35 x 28 cm, printed on heavy stock and housed in a protective transparent jacket, the work describes the ‘everyday’ of a privileged minority, and whilst historically, portraiture of the upper classes has tended to be flattering, the combination of portraits and quotes from the subjects recorded during their sessions, brings Knorr’s work closer to satire.

Of the work, Karen says “Belgravia is a cosmopolitan and rich neighbourhood in London near Harrods in Knightsbridge with many non-domiciled residents. My parents lived in Belgravia and the second image of the series is a photograph of my mother and grandmother in the front room of our “maisonette” on Lowndes Square. Yet the photographs are not about individuals but about a group of people and their ideas during a particular time in history. They are “non-potrtraits” in that they do not aim to flatter or to show the “truth” of these people. People are not named and remain anonymous.”

The meaning of the work can be found in the space between image and text: neither text nor image illustrate each other, but create a “third meaning” to be completed by the spectator. The text slows down the viewing process as we study the text and return to re-evaluate the image in light of what we have read. There are key words capitalised and words from conversations are broken up and laid out on the surface of the photographic paper emphasising its constructed and ironic nature.

When Midnight Comes Around "I photographed the art and music scene in New York City for about 10 years, beginning with the club scene at Max's Kansas City and CBGB,” - Gary Green, Photographer, ‘When Midnight Comes Around’. It was the year 1976 when American photographer Gary Green immersed himself in New York City's burgeoning downtown music scene. By day he was a photographer's assistant, but at night, he hit the clubs to document some of the decade's most iconic musicians and figures partying late into the early hours. We're talking Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Joey Ramone, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and Debbie Harry. It was the height of punk, although they wouldn't have known it at the time. ‘When Midnight Comes Around’ gives us a unique insight into an era that would come to have a huge impact on music and culture. During the 1980s Green focused on portraits but this unique collection shows the foundation of his work. Today, Green is Associate Professor of Art at ‘Colby College’ in Waterville, Maine. Mon dernier post pour @10x10 photobooks concernera Mark Steinmetz. Merci encore à @helka et @10x10photobooks pour cette merveilleuse semaine. Mark Steinmetz est né en 1961 à New York et a grandi dans la banlieue de Boston comme Cambridge et Newton jusqu'à ses 12 ans. Il a ensuite déménagé dans le Midwest. À 21 ans, il a déménagé en Nouvelle-Angleterre pour étudier la photographie à la Yale School of Art de New Haven, Connecticut. Agé de 22 ans, a déménagé à Los Angeles à la recherche du photographe Garry Winogrand, avec qui il s'est lié d'amitié. Il a déménagé ensuite à Athènes, en Géorgie en 1999 et y vivait et y travaillait toujours depuis 2017. Steinmetz réalise des photographies "de gens ordinaires dans les paysages ordinaires qu'ils habitent", et "en pleine activité". La plupart de son travail a été réalisé aux États-Unis mais aussi à Paris et en Italie. Ses livres combinent des portraits (ressemblant à des portraits mais spontanés) et des photos sincères de personnes, et comprennent également des animaux et des photos de natures mortes. Il trouve bon nombre de ses sujets en se promenant, mais il a également passé du temps à la Little League Baseball et dans des camps d'été.
