Don't catch you slippin now
#Repost from Artist @stemandthorn
America’s history is rooted in racism. It’s a history that America has yet to confront and until it is confronted, we will continue to have stories like that of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin and hundreds more, some of which we know their names, inexcusably more we don’t. Malcolm X famously said “If you stick a knife in my back 9 inches and pull it out 6 inches, that’s not progress. They won’t even admit the knife is there.” Black people were stolen, brought to a new land, beaten, raped, and murdered all while having records of their history destroyed. In the years since we’ve experienced such atrocities as the Black Wall Street massacre, Emmett Till, Jim Crow, red-lining, the prison industrial complex, the Reagan-Crack era, Rodney King, James Byrd, and more ( a LOT more). Despite it all, we push on.
Globally, Black Americans are harvested for our culture. It’s evidenced in popular entertainment, sports, social media trends, in a word Black Americans provide the ever-elusive “cool”. Therein lies the dilemma, America (and the world) loves “blackness”, but actual black people are a nuisance they’d rather not have to deal with.
To feel unwanted in your home is a special type of hurt. To be told to leave because you disagree with what is being done in your home, especially when your ancestors built this country FOR FREE, is a special kind of hurt. To have Drew Brees types tell you you’re required to mirror their feelings for this nation and the flag because their grandfathers fought in WWII, is in short, hurtful. What about our own grandfathers who fought in the same war only to come back and be called “n*gger” while out with their family.
There are people today that won’t consider that there are different versions of America and the America that they love might just may be a different experience for Black Americans. What is a point of pride for you, could be a source of hurt for others.
I read once “Racism is so American, that when you protest racism it looks like you’re protesting America.”

Sam Lao's "Catch You" Video is A Cause for Celebration | @TheSamLao @StemAndThorn

Sam Lao’s “Catch You” video is the Mother’s Day surprise that no one saw coming.
“We’ve been working on a project for several months now. It’s not done yet, but it’s finally in a place that we’re ready to share.”
That’s the tagline behind “Catch You,” the latest collaboration between Dallas artist Sam Lao and her husband, director Jeremy Biggers. The single was officially premiered on Mother’s…

Jeremy Biggers is a Dallas-based artist. He attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he primarily focused on expression through graphite and charcoal drawing. During his college years he cultivated his love for painting and photography, and they’ve since cemented themselves into his everyday life. Biggers' work is shaped by experiences that inform his view of the world. His goal with each piece is to inspire conversation. Many murals you find around DFW are his and in February, Jeremy collaborated with Fossil to design a new watch for Black History month.
