The "Normal" They Never Chose

I have never felt eyes strip the worth from my steps, never walked home rehearsing keys like weapons or shrank my laugh to feel safe in a room.

The world does not measure me by my silence, or ask my competence to apologise for my confidence. No one teaches me to smile as survival.

I do not know this—not truly. But I see it. In fragments. In confessions tucked into jokes, in the way shoulders tense when a man enters the lift, in stories told with a half-laugh, because it hurts less that way.

And worse— how it's all been made to seem normal. Like background noise they’re expected to live with. Like their exhaustion is just poor sleep. Like the voice in their head saying you’re too much, or not enough wasn’t planted there by centuries of echoed silencing.

I see the weight of being constantly aware— of your body, your tone, the space you occupy, the danger in being alone.

I see the slow erosion of joy turned into vigilance. The way fear becomes instinct. The way doubt becomes second nature. How so many carry a storm inside but still show up as if it’s a sunny day.

The rules are written in ink that doesn’t stain my skin— patriarchy scrawled across pages I've been handed since birth, too often without question.

It’s in the way a girl is taught to be polite when she wants to scream. In how power is dressed in suits and softness is seen as a flaw. It’s in the small cuts that don’t bleed until later— dismissals, jokes, warnings dressed as advice.

And I— I can try to understand, but I must admit: I can never know.

Not really.

This body I live in is not a battlefield. No one makes a war of my presence in public space. No one doubts myself or edits my worth down to what I wear.

But I see the damage and I choose not to look away. I listen. I unlearn. I ask not for applause— but for accountability.

Because it’s not enough to say I’m not like them, not enough to whisper, that’s terrible, from the sidelines.

Change is not loud. It’s quiet choices: correcting the joke, giving space, believing her.

It’s stepping back so she can speak— and be heard. It’s knowing I don’t need to lead to help dismantle the throne.

I will never wear the weight women carry daily— but I can name it, challenge it, refuse to pass it on.

Because to be a man should not mean being the measure by which all else is made to shrink.

And if the world taught you to suffer in silence— then let the silence end here.

Just been thinking a lot about unfairness and fate. And nothing is more unjust than that of women in todays society. One that normalises a "normal" not even chosen by them. One that marginalises true normality. One that betrays and deprives of simple expectation. Each step is a step. Together they become a marathon. And I choose to step. Just something that came to me and I felt to share. Listen, Learn, Lead.
