Steve grins and moves over, perching himself in Bucky’s lap, his legs swinging off the side.  If anyone had asked him a year ago if he’d ever like sitting in anyone’s lap like this, he’d have said no way.  He hated being made aware of how small he was.

He liked it with Bucky though.  It felt cozy and intimate.  He liked the he could just be touching him and not thinking about it.

“Yeah, they are,” he agreed.

He went back to eating, feeling much more content.  So much so, the very act of getting the food down even felt easier.  He smiled and nodded. “I think so too.  It’ll be our way to celebrate.” 

Bucky doesn't hesitate and scoots his chair back a bit, "Of course sweetheart, you don't even gotta ask," he beams as he drags Steve's plate over to be beside his before letting him settle in his lap.

He sighs happily as he can hold Steve, "See..even pancakes are better when I can hold you," He grins as he takes another bite of pancakes carefully so he doesn't drop crumbs or anything on Steve.

"Its nice to think about, that the next time you have pancakes that it'll be when we're together again," He beams as he moves to take a sip of his water and then kisses Steve's shoulder softly.

If you wanna look at this literally, fine. Steve has to choose between Bucky and Tony. But the movie frames this as a scale, weighted undeniably towards Bucky. When Steve says “He’s my friend,” and Tony says “So was I,” within the context of the movie, it is clear that those sentences mean very different things, not just to Steve, but in the framework of the entire MCU and all of Steve’s relationships. The word “friend” in Steve’s context was insufficient, and in Tony’s, it was almost a stretch. Bucky’s presence changes Steve’s definition of the word. He says it with such weight that you almost expect him to follow it with something else, something like “even when I had nothing, I had Bucky,” or another line from the menu of dialogue these two pick from. Or replace it with another, more personal, more vulnerable term. But he just leaves it, and expects Tony (and the rest of us) to fill in the gaps. It’s such an oversimplification it’s almost laughable. Of course Steve was going to choose Bucky. He’s been doing it his whole life. He's his friend.

Sometimes I think about how genuine Bucky and Steve’s friendship is and how much Bucky must have loved Steve because just think about it. Bucky was very intelligent and excellent in school, he was a great athlete, he was attractive, he had everything to be one of those guys that are total assholes specially in times like the 40’s. Like, let’s be for real. In real life, people that have all those characteristics that pre-war Bucky had are not always the nicest, or at least, they don’t become best friends of people like Steve. Steve who had countless diseases, who was not very appealing to girls, who would always be ignored or taken for granted.

But Bucky did.

He became Steve’s best friend. He was always there since they were just little kids and as he grew bigger and noticed that his best friend didn’t so much, he still was always there. He always took care of him.

And maybe I like over analyzing his character so much, but that just made me think of what a great fucking person Bucky Barnes had to be to be considered by CAPTAIN AMERICA his best friend.

Even after all those years, even after Hydra, even after the serum, when Steve found out that Bucky was alive the first thing he wanted to do was to save him. And in Civil War he fought his own teammates and went against the government just for him.

Steve thought Bucky was worth it because Bucky was the first to think he was worth it.

Excerpt from Chapter 5

“Are we having a lesson tonight?” Steve asks in the elevator up to the apartment. They’re in each other’s space in the back corner, as away as they can be from the other chefs as they can be in the tiny elevator.  “I don't know,” Bucky sighs. “I was giving lessons all day.” Steve tips his shoulder into Bucky's, leans in to whisper in Bucky’s ear. “I loved watching you.” Bucky peers at Steve, his cheeks flaming. Steve’s smiling at him, his eyes shining, and it only makes Bucky blush harder. He smiles back at Steve. “Okay,” Steve concedes as they walk out of the elevator, into their apartment. “If not a lesson, then how about at least a drink.” Bucky nods. “Sure.” He makes his way to the bar cart, ends up being inspired for a mini lesson. “How about an old fashioned?” “That’s my favorite cocktail.” “Mine too,” Bucky agrees. “Have you ever made one?” Steve tugs his lower lip between his teeth and nods.  “You know all the ingredients to make one…” Bucky recognizes the moment Steve realizes where he’s going with this. His eyes light up, his grin spread from ear to ear, pure elation etched across his face. “I am getting a lesson tonight!” With a kiss to his cheek, Bucky leaves Steve and heads to the kitchen, grabs a handful of oranges and a knife. Back at the bar cart, Steve’s already got two old fashioneds made and poured. Dropping all but one of the oranges on the cart, Bucky gets to work peeling the orange with the knife, turning the orange skillfully, quickly, ending with one long spiral of peel.  “Damn,” Steve gushes. “You’re so fucking talented!”

He just woke up after being the Winter Soldier, a version of him that he HATES, and trying to kill everyone in sight… and THE first thing he does is say “your mom” and bully Steve for being small

And people wonder Bucky Barnes is my favorite character

The MCU really robbed us of having Bucky and Steve messing with Sam as the new captain America.

Someone calls for captain America when Steve is around and he’s like “what? Where?” And looks up in the sky (the video goes viral and people edit in Sam flying over head to dramatic music)

Some dude is being racist and Steve punches him out. (Sam tried to lecture him but Bucky just very calmly said “punching racists is what captain America is all about and Steve is the original captain America you can’t stop him it’s his one job.”)

Them both telling Sam that he needs to “respect his elders” when they both want Chinese food and Sam wants burgers (they get Chinese and Sam throws chopsticks at them)

Steve outrunning Sam because he’s got super serum and Sam’s like ??? Why am I the one fighting the bad guys when you’re over here promoting steroid usage (Steve reminds him he’s a retired war veteran and to respect his elders. Bucky laughs until he cries and Sam flips them off as he walks away)
