How to Make it Through Getting Left Behind

It’s that time of year, when you are drowning in papers trying to study for finals but can’t help to taste the almost sweet freedom of summer. Unfortunately it’s also a time where the majority of us will likely be faced with the sadness of watching some of your best friends walk across the stage on graduation day. This single moment will be marking their entry into the real world and you will more than likely be left behind feeling an emptiness as you have to now go through college without them. You can’t help but be happy for them, this is a big moment for them and you don’t want to bring them down. At the same time what is life going to be like without them there to go on impromptu dinner dates with you or be a shoulder to lean on when you desperately need to vent about boys or the overwhelming amount of assignments you have due that week. In the final weeks you have left with them keep these few things in mind:

 THANK THEM

Remember to thank them for making this good bye one of the hardest that you will have to say. They have made every moment so worth while and reminded you your strength and ability to achieve and accomplish anything while in the meantime cheering you on the whole time.

BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER IN THE PRESENT

This good bye is going to be just as hard for them, if not harder, as it will be for you so try to be strong! They’ll be entering the BIG SCARY WORLD OF ADULTING and although you will be just a text, facetime, or phone call away the ability to physically be there will be pretty impossible. So be there for them in the now while you still can. Do they have a big senior symposium presentation? Go and sit front row! Be their photographer for senior pictures and do what you have to do (even if that means getting drenched in champagne as they pop the bottle in your direction for the best possible picture angle). These moments provide some of your last laughs together and will make them the most memorable!

KEEP THEM CLOSE

Always keep in mind that just because they are graduating and won’t be five minutes away from you at all times that DOES NOT mean it’s the end of your friendship!!! THEY WILL STILL BE THERE WHENEVER YOU NEED THEM! They will have plenty of exciting news to share with you as they begin to find their place in this BIG CRAZY WORLD.

 IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD

 It might feel like the end of the world at the time but I am here you tell you IT IS NOT! They might be leaving but you still have plenty of people that will still be there for you. Keep in mind that you aren’t the only person going through this! Embrace the friends that will still be there for you because they will probably be facing something similar. Look forward to the future it will be a time of new stories, new adventures, and new people!! It’s an exciting but scary time but you are ready for it and you can always call your best friend for advice!
