Yagi Toshinori/All Might

Toshinori is a little out of his depth the first time you come down with a bug. He's used to playing the big damn hero, swooping in and saving the day, beating the bad guys, and rescuing innocent civilians. But then the civvies et handed off to paramedics, doctors, family and friends. He's never had to look after someone for more than the few minutes it took to rescue them.

He's been in hospital himself with his injuries after the fight with All For One, which does kind of give him the reverse perspective, but it's not quite the same.

When Toshinori is unsure, Toshinori goes over the top. You'll be sitting on the couch, swaddled in a blanket, snoozing or trying to watch TV to distract yourself from your headache and stuffed-up sinuses. Meanwhile, Toshinori will be trundling in and out of the room, offering you endless cup soft tea, chicken soup, extra blankets, more Lemsip.

It's a little much, and each time you refuse one of his offerings, he sidles back into the kitchen and anxiously calls Recovery Girl.

"What is it this time, Toshinori."

"They didn't want the chicken soup! What do I do?"

"Oh, for the love of... Put them on the phone, Toshinori."

He sheepishly hands the phone to you, explaining who it is. When Recovery Girl finds out you just have a cold and aren't wheezing your last, she's even more exasperated than before. She scolds him to stop smothering you and just let you rest, much to your relief. As nice as it is to have Toshinori clucking around you like a big mother hen, offering you ten cups a tea an hour was getting to be a bit much. You felt bad having to refuse him.

It's much nicer just to have him hold you in your blanket swaddle on the couch, while you watch TV and cheesy movies that don't require any brain power to enjoy.

Please do occasionally ask him for things—soup, more tissues, an ice pack for your head—because it will make him feel needed. Toshi's got a hero complex.

Aizawa Shouta/Eraserhead

Aizawa's a teacher, so he's hardly a stranger to people being unwell. Teenagers might be not be the walking disease vectors that little kids are, but a school is still basically one giant petri dish, so he's not going to freak out when you're not well.

Don't worry though, he's not going to demand that you Plus Ultra! your way through your illness.

I know Aizawa comes across as a bit of a hardass, especially when it comes to his students, but he also prizes rationality. And logic dictates that when you're sick, you need rest so that your body has the time and resources it needs to fight off the illness.

He won't expect you to be up and at 'em while you're a snot-riddled Kleenex-fiend or while you're throwing your guts up. If you try to go to work, he'll make you call in sick. If you refuse, he'll do it for you, using his best Teacher Voice to browbeat your boss into submission.

"What kind of strategy meeting do you expect to have when they have a fever of 102?"

It is Aizawa, though, so he will expect you to look after yourself as much as you're able while you're sick. He's not going to be tenderly mopping your brow and telling you what a poor dear you are, or spoon-feeding you chicken soup just because you have a cold.

So, if you're the type to act completely helpless or like a little kid when you get ill, whining all day about how bad you feel, you won't get a lot of sympathy from him.

Also, if you refuse to take any medicine (barring medical/religious reasons) or do anything to relieve your symptoms, it frustrates him, because he sees it as martyring yourself for no reason.

"It's an aspirin, not poison."

He can't really call in sick to look after you—he is basically an essential worker—but he will make sure there is someone nearby who can respond to you in an emergency if you get worse or run out of medicine. And he'll have his phone on and check in with you throughout the day.

When he is home, he cooks or orders in, feeds the cats, tidies away your tissues. He pushes your hair back out of your face, calloused palm feeling for your temperature.

"I'm not used to looking like the well-rested one between us two."

The pair of you lay on the couch like a couple of bugs in cocoons. He in his sleeping bag, you in your blanket burrito, covered in cats.

Sasaki Mirai/Sir Nighteye

Sir Nighteye comes across as so stern and imposing that at first you might be tempted to hide your illness from him. You don't want to bother him with something as small and inconsequential as a cold or a stomach bug. He's a busy guy!

Too bad, Mirai's a very perceptive man even when he's not using his Quirk. If he can put together a plan to dig out a Yakuza gang and spend years being the brains behind All Might, then he can work out that you've got the sniffles.

Much like Aizawa, he's full to the brim with logical, practical advice about how to handle your illness. None of those old wives' tales about putting a slice of onion in your sock 'to suck out the impurities'.

He's a little less slammed than Aizawa, and can delegate to his sidekicks for a day or two while he stays home to keep an eye on you if you're really under the weather.

Despite his stern front, Mirai is a man who cares deeply for the people close to him, and he's not above tending to you.

However, there is one slightly odd thing—he keeps the TV tuned to stand-up at all times. You catch him watching the news on his laptop where he's working away at the kitchen table.

"Mirai, why don't you just watch it on the TV? Also, why has it been tuned to Tokyo Comedy Central for the last two days?"

Mirai looks at you, deadpan, and says solemnly, "Laughter is the best medicine."

Crickets.

"But it hurts to laugh," you protest, the wheeze in your voice clear.

"Very well. Laughter in conjunction with cough syrup."

The look on Megatronus/Megatron's face if and when Orion/Optimus snaps and goes full wilder in front of him. Claws and fangs extend and he fucking mauls someone or something. Better yet if the big if occurs on cybertron feral mode Orion/Optimus ends up with the Fragging Escaped Mountian Lion from all those vorns ago headbutting Orion and purring up a storm while Megs watches slacked jawed as Oppy talks to it in fragging mountain lion.

I'm sad to say that Orion Pax doesn't have the features that allowed him to thrive in the Wastelands.

Alpha Trion had firmly coaxed the newly named Orion Pax to modify parts of his frame to 'fit in better' with the rest of them. The extra bulk was taken away, the sharpened denta filed down with added suppression codes to ensure nanites wouldn't try to reconfigure it, claws pulled to make sure he only had access to blunted digits, took away the extra audials, and applied more cosmetic biolights to give off a more rounded, softer appearance that belonged to a mecha that developed inside the walls of Iacon. Alpha Trion knew exactly what would happen and proceeded to take the steps to ensure the ascension of Optimus Prime would come to pass. Orion Pax can not be too associated with his Wasteland roots. The current Council wouldn't tolerate a new Prime with pride as a Wilder.

I have a lot of thoughts about Alpha Trion. He's exhausted, depressed, and is a very dutiful, loyal spark. He will enact what the Covenant had shown him because surely Primus and Vector wouldn't lead him astray? Orion Pax may have reminded him of simpler days before his siblings had scattered, but the mech has a massive role to play in the rebirth of their planet, and he refuses to jeopardize it.

Umbra Pumas are able to travel short distances with shadows and communicate via telepathically in pictures via direct eye contact. That one in particular was an old companion to a Ranger that almost taken him. Unfortunately, they were separated by a flash flood, but Orion knows that pattern on its hide. Rangers use specific concoctions to permanently mark their companions for affiliation. This Umbra Puma has subtle dark blue and crimson striations over its torso as well as patterned scars around its optics to match the ones on its Ranger. This one personally would carry him by the scruff and nuzzle him into submission. A sparkling's claws and fangs are no match to its dense hide.

Umbras are silent group hunters but can be very vocal with their close cohorts. Their screaming vocalizations are absolutely terrifying if you're not used to them.

Orion Pax was near the dugouts -space reserved for the next troupe of performers as well as their invited support for wishes or goodbyes- when it Tamers had to drag it back to its cage. The moment it came across him, it lurched forward and howled-

The gladiators and performers were ribbing (both good-natured and ill-tempered) that it could smell the uppercaste mech among them. Meanwhile, Orion is reeling from the mental assault because poachers managed to catch it in its desperate attempt to lead them away from its wounded Ranger and other young sparks.

Orion basically made quite a few deals to ensure that Umbra's escape.

Nope, sorry, no chapter this week. Like I mentioned might happen at the end of last week's chapter, this week's been too busy for me to get the chapter prepped. In particular, I had two zine deadlines, and one of them was pretty quick but the other one I'm still working on.

The next chapter needs more work than usual ("what's Bill's understanding of romance/flirting?" is one of those topics that TBOB gave us a lotta new material on that I've got to incorporate, and on top of that I decided to add in an entirely new scene I'm writing from scratch) so it's not something I could squeeze around the edges of the zine writing.

Drop dead date for the zine submission is sunday, so hopefully between monday & friday i'll have enough time to get the chapter ready by next friday.

(On top of that, during evenings when the anti-adhd juice has worn off and i can't write anymore, I'm learning how to do vector art. Which is slowing down my art output in the short term but I hope will speed it up in the long term.)

Hi everyone! Sorry for my radio silence the past couple weeks; everything everywhere is terrible, you see.

Anyway, I'm still not sure exactly when submissions will open up, but until then, I figured I would get out the ruleset I'm thinking of so we can all get on the same page, as "marine reptile" isn't a specific taxon or anything.

So the gist of my concept is that the candidate must be clearly reptilian, and either based off a real marine reptile, or be a reptile that isn't necessarily aquatic in real life, but is in the work it comes from.

For clarity's sake, we will consider "real marine reptile" to refer to: turtles (not tortoises!), sea snakes, marine iguanas, crocodilians, ichthyosaurs, sauropterygians, mosasaurs, and thalattosaurs. There may be others I'm missing but this should cover most of them.

In addition, mythical creatures like sea serpents and dragons WILL be allowed, and reptiles that are marine or aquatic in their fiction WILL also be allowed even if not from the above groups. Please read the detailed rules below, though!

I've spent quite some time figuring this out so, I'm pretty happy with these, but feel free to leave feedback and if I'm convinced I will make adjustments!

Detailed rules:

If the candidate is based off of the listed groups, they ARE eligible, UNLESS the candidate is specifically terrestrial or averse to water. This includes characters based off of animals in the listed groups, but are not aquatic in their fiction. Examples of eligible candidates based on this rule: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vector the Crocodile, Lapras, etc. Examples of characters NOT eligible from this rule: Torkoal, the FF15 Adamantoise, Krookodile.

If the candidate is kinda sorta based off of one of the listed groups (like a hybrid or something), they WILL be allowed so long as the overall intent still reads as a marine reptile. Example: The Driblee from Kirby more or less resemble small plesiosaurish things, so they count even if they're not really based on an actual animal. The Turtle Tiger from Yu-Gi-Oh, meanwhile, is not really a marine reptile as much as it is a tiger in a shell, so it will not count.

Candidates not based at all on the above groups CAN still be eligible, INCLUDING dragons, sea serpents, random lizards, and tortoises, IF and ONLY if they meet BOTH following criteria: a) They are clearly reptilian (based on design, not lore), and not fish/eels, too humanoid, or an amalgam of too many different things that renders them no longer really reptilian (like some Asian dragons). b) They are creatures that actually live in an aquatic environment, and are not just "Water type", or a water deity that presides over a body of water without actually living in or being adapted for it. Examples of allowed candidates: Sobble, Seadramon, Mercury from Dragalia Lost, the Water Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh Examples of ineligible candidates: Kingdra, the Unagi from Avatar, Peng Lai from Dragalia Lost, Milotic

This time, documentary animals are ONLY allowed if the animal was entirely CGI generated. Which is to say, probably only extinct documentary characters. On the other hand, animal characters portrayed by real animals in fiction ARE eligible.

Hello how are you? I follow several shippers' blogs and I noticed that every now and then some bloggers publish hateful messages they received. My question is about mental health: how do you deal with it? I understand that your presence here is relatively recent, but have you ever regretted something?

This is the kind of submissions I welcome with all my heart, because they are benevolent and witty. Forgive me already for what I suspect will be a long answer. It is not the pleasure of hearing me talk that prompts them, but the sincere intention to answer deserving asks as clearly, fully and honestly as I can.

The short answer is : I am fine, Fall is slowly coming and nights are starting to be really chilly. There's some light rain tapping on the roof of my flat and I will spend my week-end wandering around some of my favorite places on Earth. And now, onwards to the consistent and interesting ask of yours...

The worst trolling message I have ever seen in this fandom is the one I am immediately going to post below, because I think it should serve us all as warning and reminder. It was posted on a blog I have been reading from the beginning of my long lurking days on Tumblr: @cb4tb is one of the most balanced and articulate people in this corner of the Internet. I remember being shocked by its cold and very coherent violence. The feat of a casebook sociopath, who thinks her asks in Spanish (I am 200% certain about it) and who has an appalling command of English grammar. Written on Christmas' Eve and on purpose:

Compared to the alarming slander @cb4tb got (whatever for is a mystery, she is non conflictual and posts very witty business insights) on a day that should be completely taboo for every civilized human being (you don't need to believe in God to respect one of Christianity's most important celebrations), whatever hate I could get in here is definitely subpar. Most of it did not make it on my page and went straight to the bin. But it's not always easy: I am as human as you, Anon, and sometimes I feel personally insulted and revolted by the smugness and pettiness of it all. However, I must immediately add their hate never made me give up an inch of my convictions. They are the result of a long interval of watching and pondering, coupled with my own observations I gladly share with like-minded women all around the world. That often hits a nerve or bruises overinflated egos on the Other Side. So be it: I am not here to be meek and obedient, if I never was meek and obedient in real life. I am here to bring clarity and build trust, which incidentally resonates very closely to what I do for a living. That probably rates me as a moderate on the shipper spectrum, in the sense that by complete design I put aside some divisive topics I firmly chose not to discuss. I am not interested to bring attention on me, in here, and the least thing I'd like is to be a vector of discord. So that would also rate me as a peacemaker of sorts - and yes, that sounds perhaps pretentious, but I believe it is needed, especially now.

I only felt a clear intention to threaten me twice, both in DM. The first time it curiously came from one extreme fringe of the shipper community and I brushed it off, because it was an empty, almost ridiculous threat. I politely denied and that was it - two persons blocked me and there were no other consequences to it. The second time, an anti came to confront me on an irrelevant point, with a very aggressive undertone. I blocked and almost forgot about it. If you have it clear enough in your mind that such things cannot be avoided and, at the same time, you know that your own moral compass is not compromised, these details will not affect you. At all. I confidently promise you that. Last but not least: if you are not great with compartmentalizing, don't step in the arena. It can seriously ruffle your self-esteem and it's not worth it.

So this is how I deal with it: I focus on what I have to say (does it bring something new? interesting? positive? thought-provoking?), on the way of saying it (above all, be kind and gracious to every other shipper) and on the right moment to say it (only when I am honestly sure I can do it with no unwanted consequences). But I will stand in solidarity with any shipper (any single one of them) who is humiliated, belittled or disparaged, with not a single shred of fear in the world. And I would also fend for myself if necessary, if I am getting over-the-top slander: all the other yapping, I ignore. Sometimes (often, even) it's more interesting to watch.

And if anything else fails, I go for a long drive and have a coffee at the seaside or simply open a book or listen to some Bach or call Someone. Or take this little big guy out for a lazy walk in the park:

You ask me if I regret anything. Absolutely not. I have received more than I could ever give, in here. I have met spectacular women and men, I have grown very fond of and feel very close to. On the one hand, the lure of the vagina is a threat; it’s seen as a place where a penis might risk encountering the traces of another man or a full set of gnashing teeth. At the same time, it’s viewed as an inherently submissive body part that must be ‘broken in’ to bring about sexual maturity. We do accept crossover ships. Preferrably from series that Sonic has officially crossed over with. At the end of submissions there will be a week-long period in which crossover ships will be judged to see if they'll be included

If you have a specific version of the ship that you like, specify what it is and this will be counted as separate to the general ship, e.g. Knuckles/Sonic (general) and Knuckles/Sonic (Boom) would be included as separate ships

Ships pairing Knuckles with younger characters like Cream or Charmy obviously won't be accepted. If a ship is submitted and I'm worried it might make waves, I'll run a poll to see if it should be included in the tournament or not

Also, just gonna put this out there: But Knuckles/Julie-Su and Knuckles/Rouge are acceptable ships for the tournament and I don't want anyone being weird about them. If you feel uncomfortable with them, then mute Knuxouge and KnuxSu

As the old year ends and a new one begins, we too shall begin a new Rare Pair Poll, this time focusing on Yugioh Zexal, with all the citizens of Heartland, as well as the people of Astral World and Barian World. Like it's compatriots, this is a single elimination style bracket, without limits of submissions. You can submit whatever pairing you want, whether human, robot, or extra-dimensional creature, outside of those pairings on the ban list. This is a rare pair poll, after all.

Also, like last time, bashing others, whether it's the pairing, the people in it, or even the person who likes that pairing, is prohibited. This is just a silly poll, there’s no need to attack anyone just to prove your point. If you do, you will be blocked, and sent to Don Thousand.

What are your thoughts about the romance in AOB?

Short answer: it’s bad.

Long answer: 

The main problem with the romance in AoB is that it’s yet another vector through which the ugly blue thing sucking up all the narrative oxygen in the room of the back half of AoB can use to render the protagonist of the story completely narratively inert outside of acting for his benefit or on his orders. Fermyne is a sledgehammer the story uses to make Rozemyne backslide from a deeply flawed but dynamic character with potential to Ferdinand’s submissive child bride who’s sometimes allowed out of her cage to do things that benefit him or that he personally approves.

Myne’s never been a straightforwardly good character, which is actually what I like about her. She’s a hot mess; selfish, arrogant, cowardly, ignorant, bigoted, and mean-spirited, which is great! She has a lot of jagged edges for other characters to catch on and conflict with, and her aggressive personality combined with her cowardice means that she can dish it out but can’t take it even a little which is really funny. She’s never really allowed to reach her full potential because AoB is really bad at actually creating and following through with conflicts so most of her problems are just solved by making her overpowered enough to brute force whatever problem she previously had and at some point she stops having problems that she doesn’t solve immediately, but her potential really tanks when she meets the blue thing.

Ferdinand is the worst character in AoB and it’s not close. He’s massively overpowered in such a way that he resolves most interesting conflict in the story offscreen, the story contrives itself to attribute so much sympathetic tragedy to his backstory and character that it flips right into comedy, the insistence that every character is jealous of his super awesome powers and amazing brain abilities but also he’s the most tortured social outcast ever means that he seems like a self-pitying loser, and most importantly he is NOT FUN. He’s not fun! He’s not funny, in fact he hates characters who are funny and will actively try to prevent them from doing anything funny so he is comedic poison in a story which relies heavily on comedy(he’s not an effective tsukkomi because as the strongest presence in the room he shuts down jokes rather than facilitating them, Benno’s the closest thing the story has to a good tsukkomi because he’s practical but not a killjoy). Why this is a problem with their romance is that he fucking hates Myne so much it’s unreal. He HATES her! He hates that she’s a jokester, he hates that she likes books, he hates that she likes sweets and fish, he hates that she’s not interested in embroidery, he hates that she likes red pandas and Japanese culture, he HATE HATE HATE HATE HATES that she originally has some semblance of a pre-existing worldview that doesn’t conform to his narrow view of common sense… and he never stops hating that! He constantly negs her to the point that it’s a running “joke” that he never praises her unless she’s gotten good grades, which is because outside of her ability to keep up with his “Teaching”(in quotes because he doesn’t really do anything except give her stuff to memorize which is the part you do after you teach someone) he fucking hates everything that this weird girl stands for, does, or is interested in. Fast forward to part 5 volume 12 and he WON’T EVEN LET HER WRITE HER OWN WEDDING VOWS because he’s that worried she’ll write something weird. He hates his fiance so fucking much that the idea of her saying “I like you more than books” instead of a canned generic noble vow is so distasteful to him that he can’t even let her write a draft that Roderick helps with. He doesn’t respect her, either, he deliberately manipulates the situation so that she doesn’t even know they’re engaged so she’s socially pressured to marry him, forces her to choose between him and her family(while saying that he’s going to intentionally force himself into a miserable position if she leaves him so she panics and feels like she has to prevent him from hurting himself), and then also starts crying about how she should be with Lutz after somehow managing to make HER recovering HER memories of the commoners she loves about the fact that he’s sad about his dad(Also confirming that he doesn’t care about anyone outside his dad? Imagine being Hirschur and having stood up to Veronica, losing all support from Ehrenfest for decades so you can continue supporting Ferdinand and sheltering him from his mother, only to find out that you’re so worthless to him that he doesn’t even think of you when he thinks of people who care about him) to also force her to choose him over the single other person he considers a romantic rival in another either/or rather than even entertaining the idea that she could care about both of them equally. And he has to force her because this boring, slimy little pedophile is so incredibly unappealing that the only reason Rozemyne is even really with him is that he’s put her in a position where he’s literally the only person she’s allowed to trust or confide in.

Now you may object to me calling Ferdinand a pedophile because Urano was in her 20s before she died. People who believe this are just gonna ignore anything I say here because despite pretending that they like dark fiction they don’t actually like when the dark topics in fiction are discussed, but also Urano’s age is irrelevant, we are talking about Myne, who has lived almost a decade in the body of a child(not an “””adult coded minor”” or a petite adult, literally the body of a 4-13 year old) in the social position of a child and whose lack of sexual and romantic understanding is specifically mentioned. In the fanbooks Kazuki confirms that Ferdinand does not see Myne as his elder, which makes sense because he’s never even seen what Urano looks like. The oldest he has ever seen her look is 13, the age she is when he forces her to marry him. For most of the story she was or looked, as confirmed repeatedly by the story, prepubescent. The fact that it’s confirmed that he’s sexually and romantically attracted to her in p5v12 means that he’s attracted to 13 year olds. Also in Gretia’s short story it’s revealed that he tracks when every child in Rozemyne’s employ has their sexual awakening, so it’s not just her if you want to split those hairs. Also in part 2 when he’s speaking to Benno(mid-30s) about rumors that he’s currently in a relationship with Myne(age 5) he says that relationships with this age difference are normal, so it’s not just political marriages if you want to split those hairs. The elephant in the room is that some people argue that Rozemyne’s lack of romantic/sexual feelings are indicative of her being aroace or even that Ferdinand and her are a QPR. If you HC this, pay me money. It is specifically stated that Ferdinand is romantically and sexually attracted to Rozemyne, feelings which she does not reciprocate because she doesn’t “understand” romantic love. While many aromantic people phrase their feelings this way, it’s honestly just willful ignorance to pretend like this is epic aro rep and not Rozemyne being characterized as a prepubescent child. The latter is obvious in the way her lack of romantic feelings is described, with a heavy emphasis on her not understanding them and characters repeatedly attributing this to her youth and lack of development. I get that other aro people often describe their feelings as “not understanding” romance and that aro people are often told that they will someday develop romantic feelings and never do, but like. This is a 13 year old being forced into a marriage when she admits that she’s not sure about it and doesn’t understand exactly what’s expected of her. Also, the fact that Ferdinand says she only needs to keep his name stone for two years(until she’s at the minimum age of consent) is outright stating that he does expect her to develop these feelings at some point and is just willing to wait. Also “summoning winter early”, a euphemism for CSA, is treated so lightly by the story that any argument that hinges on this particular relationship being fine because it’s an aroace QPR between a 24 year old and a mentally 22 year old is moot because the story specifically thinks that CSA generally is morally neutral and it’s only bad if a fat ugly guy does it. I’ve already discussed the way Ferdinand grooms Myne outside of a sexual context, ie he overwrites her existing worldview and forces her to conform to his common sense along with putting her in a social position where he’s her doctor, legal guardian, only confidant, and protector so she’s incapable of functioning without him, which I stand by.

I don’t like Ferdinand. I’ve never really liked Ferdinand, initially I found him boring and as the series dragged on and he got both less interesting and more central to the story I turned to actively disliking him, and now I sure fucking hate him. I’m done qualifying that because people interpret any criticism of him like an attack. I was never gonna cheer for him finally getting to fuck that thirteen year old he’s been grooming even if it was the mostly beautifully written prose of all time, so really I’m glad I’m a Ferdinand hater because it means I don’t have to get up every day and lie to people pretending that the engagement ceremony isn’t some of the worst writing in AoB. Honestly I don’t think any of you even think Ferdinand is actually queer, AoB fans are just squeamish enough about supporting canon Fermyne that they try to sanitize it by interpreting it as a queer relationship, in the process conflating aromanticism and pedophilia.
