There's a letter in the mailbox addressed to Sodapop. It comes from Florida. It's signed Sandy. Will he read it? What does it say?

Pony, decidedly not abiding to the rules of his grounding, was on his way out the door. That was before he saw a letter on the ground, having been pushed through the mail slip.

He waddles to the door (one of his converse was hanging off of his feet-- he was only halfway through putting them on when he saw the letter) and grabs the envelope.

His eyebrows furrow when he reads Sodapop Curtis, written in a handwriting much nicer than anyone's he knows.

His hands work at the envelope. He isn't the most graceful in his attempts, however, as the lip of the envelope tears around the edges. After the letter was freed, the battered and torn envelope flutters to the floor at his feet.

The letter reads as follows:

"Hi Soda,

I know it's been a while. Things happened so fast and there wasn't a lot of time to talk.

The baby was born. A beautiful little baby girl. I think she has your nose. (The nurses said otherwise.) She's okay, healthy.

I haven't named her yet. Thought maybe you should help me out with that. She is yours, after all.

I'm going to be driving back to Tulsa in a month or two; stopping by to visit family. Mom insists on seeing the baby!

…I was wondering if you'd want to see her, too?

Sincerely yours, Sandy"

He feels his face scrunch up involuntarily, his emotions showing on his face like a picture at the movie house. Sincerely yours.

Pony wants to scrunch up the paper and throw it out. He wants to burn it on the stove. He wants to bury it in the garden, so Soda doesn't even find it.

But he doesn't. Because that would ruin Soda, if he ever found out. Even if he doesn't want Sandy back in their lives-- even if he knows that Sandy is the reason for so much of his brother's heartbreak.

So, against his best judgement, he takes the letter and leaves it on their bed. It's folded up neatly, Soda's name clearly labeled on the front.

Jesus, he hates Sandy.
