We stay in May 2021, during the period in which the WOH concert took place, ZZH celebrated its 30th birthday and had a lot of photo shoots related to the promotion of various things. Among other things, in the second half of May 2021, ZZH took part in a promotional shoot for a bedding company. For the purposes of this shoot, ZZH was dressed in two sets, one was satin pajamas in a beautiful light blue color, and the other was a traditional suit in light blue. Both colors perfectly matched ZZH's person. These light colors strongly emphasize ZZH's warm complexion through contrast. Few men like this color, many of them consider it so unmanly, but some can be convinced to it. ZZH quite often, as we could see, shows himself in styles in this color, more often in photo shoots, while in ZZH's everyday life this color appears when ZZH wears jeans. The colors of the entire shoot were maintained in such light, delicate colors. The bedding that ZZH advertised also came in various shades of blue with a touch of quite intense yellow, and one of them was mint on one side, and on the other side of the bedding we had a beautiful floral print. In addition, the floral element appeared in the promotional photos themselves. It is also worth mentioning here that the photographer who did the photoshoot of ZZH for this promotion shared photos of ZZH from this session on his Weibo profile, along with a photo of him posing with ZZH. ZZH's delicate beauty went well with the delicate bedding that he advertised. Today I decided to take a photo of ZZH wearing this cute light blue suit. And of course in this case it couldn't be without a white T-shirt. It's a classic ZZH suit. In this photo, ZZH is standing holding dried cotton twigs with white, hairy seed heads in his hands. I think this is a clear reference to the material the bedding is made of. ZZH has minimal make-up on his face with delicately defined lips, the color of which does not distract from his beautiful teeth. Traditionally, ZZH has small earrings in his ears. These earrings are his trademark, because ZZH likes to wear them and has a lot of them. The short cut nicely frames his face. ZZH looks simply sensational here.

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) was an American photographer based in Queens, New York and was known for his black and white self portraits. His erotic imagery blurred the lines between identity and desire through depicting BDSM and the edgy underground subculture of New York City in the 1970s. "I’m looking for the unexpected. I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before" Robert Mapplethorpe, Art News, 1988
Analysis:
Left image: This image features the latex skin tight black suit. This creates a strong silhouette as he lays on the bench. This relaxed look feels obedient and vulnerable as if he is on show for us. The stretch of the background fabric creates creases in a radius which draws our eyes to his chest. The shine of the latex indicates flash straight on from behind the camera.
Middle Image: The position of the knife in this shot creates a strong right angle with it and his body. It is held close to his chest and his expression looks shocked and anxious. I did some research, and this shot was Mapplethorpe playing as the role of Satan, to punish those going against normality.
Right Image: This photo, which contains black leather pants with a bare chest adds to the erotic imagery. Back in 1970, this shot would have been viewed as pornographic, with his suggestive pose and edgy/rebellious tone. The use of black and white makes his skin and pants contrast strongly and draws our eyes in.
My findings:
From analysing Robert Mapplethorpe's work, I feel I have gained more confidence to step outside of my comfort zone and create work that is unexpected. I want to take self portraits that truely represent myself on the inside, as opposed to the outside front we all put up. This makes me inspired to create more raw and vulnerable work that can show myself on a deeper level.

righto - im back add even MORE stuff
in reference to your final paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to the small paragraph under the first photo, adapting to..."), I strongly think that vessels are kinda like plants – you’ve got to grow them to full maturity for them to become able to become self-sufficient and thrive. This, again, links back to the similar logical method of grafting apple trees- chopping and changing parts to create an ideal kind.
2. Responding to your first paragraph (sentence beginning "Okay so in response to #2..."), I believe that precursors do also have the choice of remaining in two separate vessels, be this usually for practical reasons, for example, having very different functions that require them to be in different places at the same time. This likely is not as common as simply inhabiting the same vessel but is an option for them nevertheless. As for inhabiting the same vessel, I do believe that it is likely for precursors to have internal fallings out within their singular vessel, which of course would present numerous problems. Hence, they have the option to move their consciousness to a separate vessel. However, this may not always be possible, which could cause further tensions within the relationship.
3. To reference to your fourth paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #3, the colors, shapes...") I have included a diagram of how I think it would work, as blood cannot transport nerves. This should hopefully illustrate what I am attempting to get across a little more cohesively to you.

Annotations read:
nerves would likely be found in the stratum lucidum, epidermis, chromatophore, and iridophore layers.
Layer 1: thin filmy layer, which acts as a cell membrane and allows for osmosis (for fluids) and diffusion (for gases). It could also function similarly to the stratum lucidum.
Layer 2: translucent gel. Similar to the epidermis, designed to act as a barrier for delicate internals.
Layer 3: chromatophores producing pigment of varying levels of yellow, red, brown, and most likely also blue. This varies the colour of the 'glowing channels' and is what creates those colours.
Layer 4: Iridophores reflect light using chemochrones composed of gelatine. This is what gives the precursors their 'shiny' appearance
Layer 5: stratum spongiosum, stratum compactum, etc...
Layer 6: a thin sheet of fibrous muscle. It acts somewhat as a giant web of ligaments, enabling them to move (see figure 3 of the second page of diagrams)
Below all that, 'blood' essentially fills the rest of the gaps inside the structure of the vessel. It transports nutrients, electrolytes, gases, hormones, etc...

Figure 2: a dip between the two slides of keratin that protects the delicate flesh underneath. This makes it more difficult to access the soft, delicate flesh underneath.
Figure 3: The plates of keratin can overlap to allow for movement. The stratum lucidum can bend easily and the underlying flesh is flexible.
Figure 4: I am sure that varying levels of each kind of pigment will vary between each precursor, much like human skin and the production of melanin, essentially varying based on the evolutionary traits that is best suited for the clime and role they hold.
Figure 5: Here shows a sample precursor leg. We could take a small sample of material, which in TURN includes data from the precursor it was sourced from, which makes a fair bit more natural and logical sense. Think of it like grafting an apple tree. If precursors are so intelligent, then this method would make more logical sense, as this contains more information and value than just a data download, it is much less technology-intensive than an entire data download, plus it is just very sweet and sentimental, plus it doesn't cost much, all that's needed is a bit of time and a small piece of flesh. However, this comes at the cost of it taking a lot longer, which is pretty inconvenient. But, at the cost of a more developed precursor, it is a cost worth taking, /nm
This would require a nervous system, which is possibly featured in the game (mind you I haven’t played Below Zero, I am waiting for the perfect opportunity) due to the inclusion of a precursor vessel skeleton, which confirms the precursors are vertebrates, meaning that they have a spinal column, and therefore a peripheral nervous system.
The organs, as biologically nonsensical as they are, do provide somewhat of an impression of how things might work in their bodies. Also, we can see that the structure of the antlers and crests are in fact bone, rather than cartilaginous structures, which is somewhat similar to Cervidae, but more closely to that of bovine, as the horns are connected to the skull.
The organs.
Hoo boy. They appear to have lungs, which could lend to the idea that the channels in their body are designed for the intake of oxygen, as there are no obvious orifices for a trachea, and there isn’t even one featured in the organs themselves. The organs are directly connected to these fan-like structures, similar to that of rami found on axolotl.
This leads to the idea that these could possibly stretch and flow over the back of the body, reaching down the back, as there clearly is no space to house such things on the shoulders. Plus, they look pretty floppy. Plus, the ‘lungs’ themselves are spotted with small suction cup-looking things, which seem to line up pretty nicely with the holes in the ribcage.
This may tell us that oxygen is taken in from these, which connect to the keratin shell, and hence absorb outside gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide) through diffusion through the small channels in-between the keratin plates. Then, these fibrous structures may provide some form of nutrient transportation or may help support the structure of the body. Then, below that, are two small glands of equal size. Architects do not appear to consume or drink anything, so what these glands are is equally up for interpretation.
I believe that they could be used for temperature regulation, by creating exothermic reactions with chemicals such as methane or sulphur to keep warm and ammonia to keep cool. They need to adapt to a variety of climes, so this may be an adaption to assist that. They could also be there to control or house chemical reactions in the body, though this likely is something that would go on within the bloodstream. The rest of it? I’m not exactly sure. Maybe something to do with nerves?
And, in reference to the second part of the same paragraph (sentence beginning "Yes, we can feel temperatures...") I would also link precursors to crustaceans and molluscs- there is a much more similar pattern to the tail and bodily structure, as well as the soft, squishy innards with a solid exoskeleton, usually keratin or chitin. However, precursors have an inner skeleton, too, which lends them more to creatures like crocodiles and tortoises, which have both. The precursor shares semblance with all of these earthly creatures, which all share one common trait- persevering in the evolutional battle for millennia. The crocodile is well known to be a descendant of archosaurs in the late Cretaceous period and is still an apex predator. Molluscs - descendants of the nautilus, tortoises – also related to archosaurs, crustaceans – decapods from over 300 million years ago. The precursors are known to have visited and left impacts on Earth, which could mean that they either gave traits of their kind to the creatures of Earth, or, after observing the creatures and their incredible adaptions, adapted their vessels to have similar traits so they are more likely to survive in harsh or challenging conditions.
4. To refer to your third paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #4 my species didn’t feel familial ties..."), I'd like to throw in a possibility for when fabricating a vessel, there is a slim likelihood that a vessel may be defective or not 'up to standards'. I'll refer to my uninteresting OC Ov'An as an example here: Ov'An is a runt of the litter, metaphorically speaking. Its body is much weaker and more scrawny than its peers, who have much more bulky, stronger bodies built for rough conditions, as most precursors were designed for. I'd also like to note the possibility of class within the precursors. Precursor society has been described as somewhat socialist, but I reckon that at some point they would decide to elect some form of guiding force for them to provide stability and a sense of direction, as well as choosing the most intelligent mind to help guide all. This could possibly lead to a court system, where several collective members of the most intelligent consciousnesses would band together in a sort of council to aid each other and bounce ideas off another perspective to ensure the most success and longevity possible for the greater society.
Holy moly realizing these ideas and possibilities really makes one's mind run riot lol ESPECIALLY figuring out all the minute intricacies of how the precursors might tick!

Mary and butterflies - the inevitability of death, murderous calling cards and collectors
Some ramblings with links to other people’s excellent meta, in which I suggest that butterflies (and/or moths) symbolize Mary as Moriarty’s reincarnation and or calling card, while also hint at her inevitable death.
Disclaimers: credits are below the cut. I’m not an expert in any of these topics. Thank you, @thewatsonbeekeepers for the beta. In this post I’ll be using moths and butterflies interchangeably, apologies to any entomologists.
Mary’s appearance in the show brings with it new imagery we haven’t seen prior to The Empty Hearse - butterflies. Once Mary’s in the picture, there are butterflies in some very strategic locations, all are either visually or subtextually leading to her. The show has done that previous to season 3; Moriarty is connected to some well established symbols like magpies, apples and IOUs.
When I first started reading meta I used to think these themes were a bit of a stretch, but I’ve since accepted that this is a show that puts barely noticeable phoenixes in a restaurant scene that shows us Sherlock rising from his death.
Here are some of the butterflies I spotted so far:

Butterflies (and in the case of this piece of meta, moth) symbolize most commonly resurrection, change and renewal. Behind the symbolism stands the transformation of a small, ungainly creature into something full-grown and unbound. In that case, in the simplest way, one could argue that butterflies were chosen to symbolize her because the ‘Mary Morstan’ persona was a stillborn’s identity that was stolen and used ‘reborn’ to create a new person.
But more than this simplistic idea; butterflies carry multiple symbolisms. When it comes to Sherlock, I and many others tend to look at Victorian symbolism, considering the detective’s Victorian roots.
I find the appearance of butterflies interesting in Mary’s context, much like I find the skull interesting in Sherlock’s. The skulls, in Sherlock’s case, serve plenty of purposes, but one of them is the idea of memento mori.
Memento mori (Latin for 'remember that you [have to] die') is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. These are representations that can appear in any form of art such as paintings, literature, poetry etc. It’s a concept that existed in many ancient cultures but is also deeply rooted in early Christianity. It serves to remind people of the inevitable; that even if we choose to ignore it, not think about it, it’s always there lurking, and the purpose is not to scare us but to encourage us to make good use of our time when we’re alive. Memento mori was the philosophy of reflecting on your own death as a form of spiritual improvement, and rejecting earthly vanities.
Victorians were obsessed with the concept (weren’t Victorians obsessed with everything?). They would take photographs of the dead and keep locks of hair of those who died in mourning brooches. It is said that they found these practices comforting.
Another expression of the ‘remember that you must die’ concept was vanitas art; vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death. The Latin noun vanitas (from the Latin adjective vanus 'empty') means 'emptiness', 'futility', or 'worthlessness', the traditional Christian view being that earthly goods and pursuits are transient and worthless. It alludes to Ecclesiastes 1:2; 12:8, where vanitas translates the Hebrew word hevel (הבל), which also includes the concept of transitoriness.
This concept reminds me, most especially, of the skull used in The Abominable Bride, which is actually Charles Allen Gilbert's 'All is Vanity' Illusion art.

Back to butterflies - butterflies are a staple component of vanitas art - paintings executed in the vanitas style were meant to remind viewers of the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death. They also provided a moral justification for painting attractive objects - in a way, it’s a justification for the vanity, or the human need of enjoyment of beautiful things. Below is a vanitas by Jan Sanders van Hemessen:

But butterflies are also considered an omen of death:
“Butterflies and moths were associated with death, sometimes merely as omens, sometimes as the soul or ghost.” These butterfly omens came in many ways. For example, in the nineteenth century United States, some people thought that a trio of butterflies was an omen of death.” [x]
Oh.

But I also think there’s more to the butterfly symbolism than Mary’s imminent death; I suggest that, in keeping with @loudest-subtext-in-tv M-Theory (suggesting that Mary was planted in John’s life by Moriarty), they symbolize Mary as Moriarty reincarnated following his death in TRF. That Moriarty had indeed not disappointed Sherlock - there was a posthumous game after all! That Sherlock was supposed to understand that while one form of Moriarty died on that roof, another had emerged, continuing the mission of burning Sherlock’s heart. Mary is Moriarty’s calling card, left behind in the crime scene. They’re different, but not separate, which is why Sherlock is so obsessed with Moriarty between HLV-T6T; he’s both wrong and correct at the same time.
So far, what I’ve suggested is that in Sherlock, skulls are Sherlock’s symbolic memento mori - the skulls are associated with Sherlock in some very significant ways.
However, Mary’s character was doomed from the start - she dies during Sherlock’s hiatus in ACD canon. I believe many fans assumed Sherlock’s Mary expected the same fate when she was introduced to the show. Although the story of Samarra is told by Sherlock, who expects his own death in T6T, Mary is the one who ends up dying.
Butterflies in ACD canon
Searching for the significance of butterflies in the ACD and BBC canon led me to a number of interesting directions in meta written by others.
The first and probably the best place to start is this meta post by @tendergingergirl, which I strongly suggest you read in full: Butterflies, Sexual Deviancy & The Bloodline Theory in The Hound of The Baskervilles.
Stapleton also has a hobby. He collects bugs…Butterflies, to be exact. This can often be seen as purely academic, but depending on the actions of the hobbyist, they can indicate more disturbing things. That of holding something vulnerable captive, treating it as your hostage, pinning it down. The torture of animals has come to be a good indicator of someone who would do this to a human. He had already shown callousness by laughing as he recounts to Holmes of ponies wandering onto the Moor, becoming trapped, and dying. In 1974, there was a release of a new edition of Sherlock Holmes stories, with the forward of The Hound of The Baskervilles written by British author, John Fowles. He is responsible for several well-known works, including The French Lieutenant’s Wife. Another, was a novel that Mason finds himself wondering why Fowles doesn’t mention in his introduction, since the villain is such a close parallel to Stapleton.(but as we have learned through the study of ACD, most writers will not come right out and say where they got their inspiration. They like for you to guess!)
A lonely young man, works as a clerk, and collects butterflies, becomes obsessed with a pretty young girl, Miranda, an art student. He chloroforms, and kidnaps her, taking her to his cellar basement, to add Miranda to his collection. That book was called The Collector. But what else does it sound like?
“So yes, I googled. From an article on the release of the movie’s Documentary. "The docu proves a poor reference point for anyone who wants to understand the literary and movie links for “Lambs.” There’s no mention, for example, of how Harris partly based the butterfly-loving Bill on John Fowles’ kidnapper in “The Collector” …And here I thought Mofftiss added allusions to Silence of The Lambs into Sherlock just for fun. SMH.”

So what we have here is a chain of metatextualities/inspiration, starting with ACD’s THOB, where Jack Stapelton inspires a book about a disturbed butterfly collector (The Collector by John Fowles), which inspires a the author of Silence of the Lambs in creation of his character Buffalo Bill, a serial murderer who inserts a death's head moth into the victim's throat because he is fascinated by the insect's metamorphosis. Silence of the Lambs served as inspiration for Sherlock as analyzed by @garkgatiss in Bond, Hannibal, and Holmes (I suggest you read the whole Hannibal section) .
Let’s look again at some imagery from His Last Vow. Mary shoots Sherlock’s heart, essentially burning his heart out, and who does Sherlock meet in his Mind Palace in a very cocoon-like straightjacket? Yes, the dead dude who encourages him to die already (“one more push, and off you pop”).

What’s the next thing we as an audience see once Sherlock opens his eyes? Mary coming to the hospital to hear that Sherlock had, in fact, survived. And what is she wearing? Her butterfly scarf, one which will another appearance later in the episode, during the tarmac scene.

I also find it interesting that in the context of Sherlock and Silence of the Lamb, there’s an element of gender-switching between Moriarty and Mary. Buffalo Bill, the murderer from Silence of the Lambs, skins bodies of women to create himself a woman’s 'suit’; in Sherlock, Moriarty is a man-villain who transforms into a female-villain in the form of a bride and/or Mary.

By the way, who else is obsessed with his suits?
Also, let’s not forget the worms, maggots and other such crawlers in the grave scene:
Now, let’s go over some of the photos I included in the beginning of this post a bit further.

Mrs. Hudson’s butterfly tea set is first shown in TEH - she uses it to serve John tea when he comes visiting her and tellis her about Mary. We also see it near John’s chair on the day of the wedding. This isn’t Sherlock’s set - his set is different, featuring the British Isles. Moriarty drinks from it in TRF. The next tea set we see, now that Moriarty is dead, is the butterflies one. In TLD, Mrs. Hudson uses Sherlock’s tea set - the butterflies are gone.

Mary’s bedroom wallpaper is very feminine, with flowers and butterflies, both complementing symbols while also very common in vanitas art. Much like Mrs. Hudson’s wallpaper in Baker Street, Mary’s wallpaper is supposed to show the contrast between Mary’s flat/Mary and Sherlock’s flat/Sherlock.

There’s an interesting moth reference in The Empty Hearse, which in my opinion, is Mary & Moriarty related. In short, in a previous piece of meta I wrote, I suggested that the Jack the Ripper case in TEH is subtext alluding to Mary’s skeletons, which Sherlock ignores because he’s upset by his reception by John. And what’s one of the first things Sherlock notices about the skeleton? New mothballs smell, hinting at an attempt to get rid of moth/butterflies - maybe a hint to the fact that Sherlock has a chance to discover the truth about Mary but misses it. Also, in the context of Mary and the Jack the Ripper case, notice this transition:

Transitions are important on Sherlock - they’re nearly always there to draw our attention.
This, I think, is perhaps the most telling about a possible connection between Mary and Moriarty: we have both magpies (a Moriarty hint) and butterflies together here. This isn’t the only hint of Mary’s past we get in the wedding; there is, after all, the telegram from CAM.
Mary’s scarf is colorful, and it appears by the time Sherlock’s subconscious suspects Mary. Mary’s black butterfly dress - an ominous dress, I’d say - is the one she wears during the labour scene in the car. The third photo is a behind the scenes photo uploaded by Amanda Abbington, although I’m unsure whether this necklace is AA’s or Mary’s (but I couldn’t pass on including this).
Interestingly, the butterflies do not appear in Rosie’s context - either because it’s a telling sign that Mary won’t be with us much longer, or because Rosie is spared being considered a part of the ‘burning Sherlock’s heart’ plan. Sherlock, on the surface, seems to love Rosie and accepts her.
Also, another BTS photograph I came across during my research which I’ve never seen before and ties nicely to the vanity topic is this one (found here):

The Death's-head hawkmoth and ‘Death with Interruptions’
You’ll recall that I referenced The Collector and Silence of the Lambs, both featuring butterflies on their cover art.
The Silence of the Lambs cover features Acherontia atropos, otherwise known as the death's-head hawkmoth. It gets its name from the sinister-looking skull shape on its back. In many cultures it is thought to be an omen of death. In a bit of another coincidental but stunning piece of symbolism, all three species of the Death's-head hawkmoth are commonly observed raiding beehives of different species of honey bee; A. atropos only invades colonies of the well-known western honey bee, Apis mellifera, and feeds on both nectar and honey. They can move about in hives without being disturbed because they mimic the scent of the bees and are not recognised as intruders.

Anyway, the use of Acherontia atropos reminded me of the book ‘Death with Interruptions’ by Jose Saramago. Interestingly, this is another book about a deathly collector with a butterfly on the cover:

In Death with Interruptions death is a woman, and she falls in love with one of her future victims. She decides to spare his life: Every time death sends him his letter [notifying him of his imminent death], it gets returned. death discovers that, without reason, this man has mistakenly not been killed. Although originally intending merely to analyse this man and discover why he is unique, death eventually becomes infatuated with him, so much so that she takes on human form to meet him. Upon visiting the cellist, she plans to personally give him the letter; instead, she falls in love with him, and, by doing so, she becomes even more human-like.
It’s pretty common to read theories about Mary who maybe was one of the assassins due to kill John both at the pool and in front of Barts. So we have a death harbinger trying to kill someone twice and failing. She then falls in love with him.
But how does the butterfly fit in?
Well, at some point in the story, death (that’s her name, sans a capital d), contemplates that using the death head butterfly, instead of a violet piece of paper, would have sent a much stronger message to those whose death is coming for.
And here’s another last bit of coincidental reference to Sherlock: I’d argue shades of purple, among them shades of violet, are associated with Mary and her secrets. There’s the purple dress she wears in TEH, her bridesmaids’ dresses include various shades of purple (including what I would argue was a violet sash) and let’s not forget:

Oh and, by the way, remember the song Donde Estas, Yolanda from TEH, about a woman called Yolanda? Always thought it was a bit of an odd choice for a song?
Yolanda is a female given name, of Greek origin, meaning Violet.

Serpent of Eden (Part 1 - Reid Series)
Maybe he stole her innocence. Maybe she never had any . . .

I’d been absentmindedly humming the song as soon as I heard the opening tune, giving the song more attention than the impatient bartender in front of me who had to wave her hand in my face to bring me back to earth.
“Hello?” She set her weight on one hip, clearly annoyed with me. “What do you want to drink?”
“Oh, right, sorry. Just a water please.”
Mild humiliation manifested on my face, earning the concern of the stranger beside me.
“You okay down there?”
I laughed softly to mask my shame. “I’m a bit jet-lagged. I just got back from Europe.”
I hadn’t noticed him sitting there before, probably because I practically slept-walked into this place by happenstance, but once I answered him, my eyes naturally drifted in his direction. Consequently, I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

He was charming in the most peculiar way. His hair was a mess of curls, that I positively adored for a reason I couldn’t quite figure out; a stark contrast to his clean suit that targeted my insatiable desire for sharply dressed men.
“Where in Europe?” He asked with genuine curiosity, sipping from a mug with steam floating out of it.
“Iceland.”
He raised his eyebrows in earnest surprise. “I heard it’s beautiful there.”
“It really is. The waterfall we visited was insane. Here, lemme show you a picture,” Pulling out my phone, I leaned over the seat between us to show him a photo I’d taken of the waterfall, not even realizing how close he was until I smelled his cologne. It was such a unique scent that I knew I could only ever associate it with him, even if I were to never smell it again.

I brushed aside the nervousness I felt from his close proximity and slid back into my rightful spot a seat away. “You should definitely go if you’re considering it. I’m planning on going back this summer.”
“Yeah, I’m, um, I’m definitely considering it.” He grinned, displaying a pair of dimples that made me weak. I let myself wonder if I was the reason he was considering going.
Unconsciously, I turned my bar seat fully towards him, showing that he had my undivided attention, and asked, “So do you go to Hollis?” Referring to the college just nearby that I attended.
“No, no. I graduated ages ago, but um, I work at Quantico.”
“Quantico? Like FBI Quantico?”
“That’s right. I’m, uh, I’m a profiler for the Behavioral Analysis Unit. We specialize -”
“In building profiles for unidentified criminals. No, yeah, I totally know what you do! At the law firm I work at, the prosecutors use profiles all the time. That’s so cool that you do that.”
He wasn’t even mad that I’d interrupted him, no, he was glad. He smiled, looking almost proud of me.
No tired sigh, no rolling eyes
No irony
“So you work at a law firm?” His mouth hidden behind the rim of his cup.
Doing my best not to look at the way he licked the taste of coffee from his lips, I had to consciously keep my eyes steady on his as I answered. “Yeah, I do. There are like generations and generations of lawyers in my family, so I’m just continuing that tradition, I guess.”
The conversation paused for a moment again, while his stare lingering on me too long for comfort that I had to look away.

“I love this song.” I muttered under my breath, simply bringing it up to find a reprieve from his overwhelming gaze. From my peripheral, I caught him smirking, still staring.
“From Eden. B-32.”
Him simply knowing the jukebox number for the song felt like a sign.

“Hozier wrote it in a tongue-in-cheek way from the point of view of the devil looking at something innocent and seeing it as a missing part. The song tries to woo a woman while admitting that the relationship would be deeply flawed.” He informed me.
“Wow, that’s beautiful. Almost makes me want a forbidden kind of love.”
Oh, had I only known the irony of my sentiment.
“He’s so good with his prose and poetry. It’s actually what inspired me to go to Iceland. I thought a change of scenery might be good for writing. Not much here in Virginia that’s quite like the beauty of Iceland,” I rambled, catching myself and consciously slowing down the rate of my words. “But um, I don’t write anything really good, just stuff that’s for me mostly.”
“I’m impressed.”
“Why?”
With the utmost nonchalance, he stood from his chair, sliding his drink down the bar with him as he took the empty seat closest to me. I tried not to let my vision drift from his face to his actions, in the same way that he kept his gaze firm on him while he spoke.
“Well, I tried writing, but I didn’t get very far. You’re lucky. If you’re writing for yourself, it’s true passion,” He paused to glance at his empty glass, like he was debilitating whether or not to say this next part. “Maybe you’d let me read some of it?”
"Yeah. Sure. If you really want to.”
“Yeah, I’d love to,” He chuckled. “You’re smart, you’re well-traveled - great taste in music. I’d like to know more about you.”

I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door
Maybe the flattery got to my head, but I couldn’t help the sudden surge of confidence bursting through my veins.
“I’d like to know more about you, too.” I confessed.
Needless to say, we didn’t waste another second getting to know each other.
Well, as much as you can get to know someone after you fuck them in the bathroom of a bar.

“And where have you been, young lady?” Holly asked, acting more like my mother than my roommate upon my return to the dorm.
“The Hollis Bar and Grill.”
“Doing what exactly?”
I would be remiss not to take up the opportunity for witty banter.
“Spencer.”
She rose from her seat at an ungodly speed to chase me down and force me to explain everything.
“Who is he?”
“Some guy.” I blankly answered, not finding it in my jet-lagged heart to recount every last detail.
“So is it just Spencer? No last name?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, do you usually ask your one night stands for their last name?” I shot her an accusatory stare.
“Oh, is that what we’re calling this? A one night stand?”
My agreeing nod was interrupted with the ear-splitting squeal of joy that erupted from Holly.
“You had your first one-night stand!”
“Say it any louder, would you?”
“Sorry, I’m just so proud of you! My baby’s growing up.” Pretending to wipe tears from her eyes, Holly pulled me in for a hug. The only way I could manage to get out of it was if I promised to tell her every little thing in the morning when I was well-rested, and fingers crossed, less jet-lagged.
As promised, in the morning, I revealed to Holly all the details of the night before, including, but not limited to our thought-provoking discourse, his appearance, and his performance.
“At the end, he told me, ‘I will never forget you.’” I gushed to Holly.
And he definitely meant it, because after tomorrow, he most certainly would not.

The first day back from Spring Break is typically the hottest day of the year, and today was no exception. It was breaching the three-digit-degree mark, which is how you know it’s hot, but we were still forced to endure the cruel and unusual punishment of wearing a uniform anyway. One that consisted of a white button-up, a plaid pleated skirt, and some type of University cardigan over it.
Usually, this didn’t pose a problem, and I would comply, but we’d recently been hit by an ongoing heatwave that didn’t look like it was stopping anytime soon.
Even as I got ready in the morning, with my windows shut and the air conditioning blasting, I was sweating like a pig. I had a paranoid feeling that my makeup would melt and run down my face by the end of the day, so I sat in front of the fan to cool myself off. I struggled with my hair - not that I didn’t normally struggle to style my hair every day because my kinky curls weren’t exactly manageable. But I had no interest in straightening it because I knew the humidity would just return it to its naturally curly state anyway, so I settled for letting it run wild. I’d probably work up a sweat trying to style it at all, honestly.
As I packed the last of my things into my backpack, I finally slipped on my Uni cardigan over the rest of my uniform to complete it. I’d been delaying this part for the better part of an hour because I knew exactly what would happen the second I put it on. And just as I anticipated - I felt faint. My cheeks grew pink the minute I stepped out of my dorm; exposing myself to the sun that was visibly beating down on everyone in the courtyard.
“Y/N!”
Behind me was Christina, who was jogging to catch up with me. To be considerate, I stopped walking, giving me the opportunity to look at her wholly. She was only wearing the skirt and the button up, with her cardigan wrapped around her waist.
“Are you allowed to wear your cardigan like that?” I asked after she finally caught up to me.
“No, but I’m going to do it anyway. Stick it to the man!” She threw up her fist into the air with a proud grin plastered on her face.
Ah, yes - stick it to the man. One of Christina’s favorite five-word mantras that she stuck by. The other being - we do what we want.
But, see, it was easy for her to say that because she never once faced repercussions for her actions. Take her hemmed skirt, for example. She shortened it by an inch - not allowed, by the way - but here she was, donning her hemmed skirt and receiving no punishment for it, not even earning a second glance from the campus security we just passed.
How she managed to get away with as much as she did was beyond me. The only way I could describe it was that she had this magical gift of invincibility - she could never get in trouble for breaking the rules, completely untouchable. But for me, I knew the second I acted out, I’d be sitting in front of the whole school board, begging them not to expel me. My luck was just that bad.
“You don’t always have to do what they say, you know?” Her words were tempting fate.
“Yes, I do.”
“Why do you always have to be such a goody-two-shoes? Why can’t you just let loose? You’ll have so much more fun.”
“But that’s just it - I’m not here to have fun, Christina! I can’t afford to mess around every day and break the rules. I’m not like you, okay? I actually had to work to get here.” My voice had taken on much more anger than the situation warranted, which I instantly regretted.
Her head cocked to the side in shock. “You don’t think I had to work hard?” Christina’s voice now matched my previous level of rage.
“I’m sor-”
“It’s fine. I’ll see you after class.”
Great.
I watched in lamentation as she briskly walked away from me, clearly upset.
As if today wasn’t bad enough.
Though I knew she wanted me to chase after her and beg for her forgiveness, I had much more important things to attend to. Plus, I trusted her word - she’d see me after class and I could apologize after then, but as for right now, I was going to keep my priorities in order.
As per usual, I was the first to arrive, and the following class, I was, too, and so on and so forth. Christina would’ve rolled her eyes at my timeliness, but I preferred being early than being late.
By lunch time, I hadn’t seen Christina since our minor altercation in the morning, but to my delight, when I reached our lunch spot in the grass, she was right there waiting for me, just like she always did.
“Hey, Chris. About earlier -”
“No need to apologize. I shouldn’t have pushed you to break the rules. Come sit.” She patted a spot on the grass under the shady tree for me to sit on, but not even the voluminous leaves above could mask us from the sun.
It was noon now, probably the peak of heat, and I felt like I was being baked alive. Even the wind that passed through was a hot breeze, merely amplifying the humidity.
And perhaps I was compensating because I had a suspicion that Christina hadn’t truly forgiven me, but I started to peel my sweater off my body with the guise that I was doing it because I was burning up, and not because I was trying to get back on her good side.
She was speechless at first, but then she hit me with a cheerful, “Yeah!” While she clapped in approval, I took off my cardigan and unbuttoned the top few buttons.
I was almost enjoying myself and how rebellious I was being. It was very unlike me, but it felt nice not to care so much, but then I heard a voice too distinct to misplace.
“Ms. Y/L/N!”
Mine and Christina’s head both whipped around hastily to see Mrs. Whitman, who looked furious.
“That is against the dress code. You will report to room R-412 after school for detention. Do not be late.”
Lest I forget to mention, Christina was breaking the dress code, too, but again - her power of invincibility protected her - a power which I did not possess.
My jaw hung low in shock.
“Oh my god,” I turned to Christina, with my hand covering my mouth.
“I am so sorry, Y/N. I didn’t mean to get you in trouble.”
I shot up from the grass, replacing my cardigan where it should be on my shoulders and buttoning the top few buttons of my shirt to regain some dignity.
“Where are you going?” Christina called out after I abandoned her at the table.
I didn’t answer, out of pure rage, not that it was Christina’s fault, but that I’d actually foolishly broken the rules - and enjoyed it.
The rest of the day was spoiled after that thanks to the impending doom of heading straight to detention after school was over.
Christina texted and called repeatedly to apologize, but it would be no use. I wasn’t necessarily mad at her, although it wouldn’t have been completely untrue to say that I was, but I was madder at the situation.
My humiliation was reinforced when after the final bell rang, I had to go against the grain of students, who were desperately filing out of the classes to return to their dorms, while I was headed for yet another “class.” I normally would’ve been one of those students, briskly shuffling out of a classroom with a million other people, trying to cram through a tiny door to leave, but now I was an outlaw, and I wasn’t sure that I liked it.
I found the room in no time, having studied the campus map until I knew it as well as the back of my hand. I even recognized the room number from when I asked my counselor for an application to audit Dr. Reid’s Criminology class, but I was declined acceptance, giving me all the more reason to hesitate to enter. I clutched onto the doorknob and lingered in the doorway, trying to find the nerve to walk in and commence my punishment.
With one exasperated exhale, I swung the door open and marched in with my head down and my tail between my legs. Taking a cursory glance, I didn’t see a teacher anywhere.
“Hello? Dr. Reid?”
My small voice ricocheted off the high ceilings and reverberated back to me, instilling me with the chills of being alone in this large, empty classroom.
I hadn’t yet taken a seat, mainly in case I needed to run for my life, I’d just need to pick up my feet instead of get up from a seat, but more so because I expected someone to be in here to instruct me on where to sit. I was more surprised that it was just me here and not anyone else, which made me reflect even harder on the idea that maybe I was the only one here because everyone else in this school had more discipline than me. But I also had to consider that the kids that were troublesome enough to land themselves in detention probably had no intention of suddenly abiding by the rules and showing up to detainment as they should.
Out of nowhere, I heard the clunk and thump of shuffling footsteps.
"Dr. Reid?”
From the stage I saw a figure emerge, briskly walking with a satchel crossed over their body and a coffee cup raised to their lips.
Those lips.
I’ve seen them before.
Flashbacks of the night before began replaying in my head at a million miles per hour.
“You okay down there?”
“Iceland.”
“Quantico? Like FBI Quantico?”
“B-32.”
“I’m impressed.”
“Maybe you’d let me read some of it?”
“I’d like to know more about you.”
I felt the ground sway beneath me when the source of his familiarity became glaringly apparent.
We simply stood there, gaping at each other like we couldn’t believe this was actually happening, totally, and completely speechless.
“Spencer?”

4 Something

You had been introduced to everyone, but to be honest, you felt as if you could not memorize the men you had just met.
To be fair, there were 16 other men.
Selen was the eldest, and therefore the elder brother figure of the entire Pound. Mouse was the youngest. He was an “intern” at the Dream Gems. He sat next to Chenle, and whispered to him quietly in Korean. He looked so small in this gang. You assumed he had to join when he was possibly younger than you became a member in the Ripple.
Selen had made you meet the others, and even repeat their names. Victory sighed as he endured everyone hugging him and strangely calling him Orpheus. Selen, surprisingly, went quick. With each snap of his fingers, as if it were the 1920’s, he pointed and named.
Your head spun with the names; You only went by small descriptions to memorize each man. And even then, you had no idea. Osaka, or Herac was sitting next to a lean man, Zeus. This man was lanky, but smiled widely and laughed as he sang.
The one that Johnny sat next to, with his statuesque face was Aphrodite. He was breathtaking. Gogo- Hermes, was faced away from a very energetic boy, with feathery hair, Helios. You looked at another man, with a pinched nose, named Athene. Selen sat next to him. You stared at him, and he nodded at you silently.
And in this room, Johnny was not even referred to his name, his English nor Korean, but as Ares. You held his hand under the table.
“So, Eos has made this, Psy is their name, as a new spy. Now, Athene will make the plan.” Selen said loudly.
The man mentioned nodded, before he did a double take. “What? Hyung—?”
“Eos orders.”
Athene blinked, and he stood up, quietly kicking you.
“OW.” You stated with disgust, glaring up.
“Oh! Pardon me, would you mind punching Selen?” Athene said like a gent.
There was an ahem. The man who made the noise placed his hands under his chin. “Continue, Athene.” Aphrodite said with a coolness.
The other man sighed quietly, but he got out a scroll. It was curled, but he laid it out so everyone can see. Yuta -you didn’t even want to try to remember his name-, helped it keep it open with his elbow, and another boy who was introduced as Songbird, who smiled up at Athene.
Athene now read loudly, “My fellow Gods, demigods and mortals; we invite a new, fellow mortal by the name of Psy. They have a chance to take down our enemy. Because of this, all business is now closed. We will be quiet and we will,” Athene leaned closer, muttering to himself in Korean, “We will now not be active. Herac, Dolphin, Psy and Ares, shall all go to the West Side and take the corrupt Ripple down. Any news from our spies will be delivered by Songbird and Orpheus.” Athene sighed as he pulled away, “With Godspeed, Eos.”
You hid your smirk at his flat tone. Perhaps Eos was too much of a narcissist to even realize his team was much too sick of his dramatics.
Athene pulled the scroll back, and he blinked. “Any questions?”
“Yeah.” You crossed your arms, “Is Eos okay?”
Aphrodite scoffed and he looked at you through his lashes. The other men, including Selen, scoffed and harrumphed at your response.
“Well don’t look at me like I’m some sort of goon.” You stood up. “You all might’ve thought the same.”
“Eos,” said the young man you saw training earlier, you believe his name was Achilles, “Is a God among us. I am lucky to be seen as a demigod—,”
“Oh my god.” You rolled your eyes as you grabbed Johnny’s shoulder, and whispered loudly, “What a cult, am I right?”
“Psy,” he whispered with guilt.
You turned, and sighed, holding the bridge of your nose as you looked upon everything. The shining waxed table. The white suits everyone wore. Their stares. How they all looked down.
“I’m going to take down the Ripple my way. Chenle—,”
“He is known as Dolphin!” Orpheus, started.
“Not another word out of your mouth.” You glared at him, before turning away, gently tapping Johnny.
He sounded worried. You’re already in enough shit. You should be dead. More than ever in this situation. With Eos. This is the worst scenario and your best friend didn’t know how to act. You held his hand tightly above the table and smiled.
“Let’s go. I will contact Ch- Dolphin, with updates. And or, Victory- Orpehus.” You giggled as Johnny stood up with you.
“Then Godspeed,” Helios said to you calmly.
“God damn,” you replied with a smirk, and pull your friend out as the others daggered your back with judgement.
And another, foreign dagger stared above the table, witnessing every single move you had just made.
The funeral was that. A funeral.
Nothing prepared you for the pain you felt staring at Yangyang’s body. His face was still, no smile, and he was so, so pale. Unlike the photo that was next to him. It was only from a few days ago. He was grinning. Laughing. It was with Mr. Money and Sushi, but they were edited out.
His real name was read out in multiple languages. From German, Chinese, Korean, English. It read the same. Liu “Dreamer” Yangyang. Friend. Son. Brother.
You gripped onto Johnny, and looked up at his eyes, trying to find his warmth. It had to be. It was supposed to be. Impossible. It had to be.
Johnny sighed quietly as his lips contorted, before he finally grabbed onto the words. “D-Do you remember how Dreamer always knew what you wanted for your birthday? And how he always shared with us the photos of Louis and Leon?”
A hot tear escaped your eye, as you hid in his huge chest and nodded. You nodded frantically as you began to sob. Johnny’s big hands held you, and he placed his chin on you, sighing quietly again.
The plan was ruined. You lost the man who should be here and hugging you and Johnny before you both went on a cruise to Korea, and then after that, the world.
You let go to breathe, biting the inside of your cheeks with anger. Your gaze turned to Victory’s tears, and Sushi looking at the youngest member’s body
His face reminded you, strongly of how you were young once. Running away and living with Johnny out on the streets of Baise. You had only one television, the news, and that broadcast that evening was of a grown woman crying, over and over in Taiwanese, “WHERE IS MY SON? WHO TOOK HIM AWAY FROM ME?”
His eyes shared the same pain.
“Psy.” You turned as Mr. Money hugged you. Embraced you. He hid in you. “I-I can’t we could’ve lost you too. And John, we- fuck.”
Osaka was in the corner, looking down as he stared at the Ripple mourn.
Once Mr. Money had released himself, you stared at Jewel letting Smalls and Henry hug him tightly. Jewel despised any touching.
The fierce, cunning man, couldn’t even look what is inside the coffin. He only held the two now youngest members close to his heart.
Your hands gripped, nails digging to your palms. Now this was something you couldn’t take. The Pound may have you and Johnny’s lives on a string. But nothing could describe your frustration, to Sicheng. Victory. Whatever his name was.
To Yuta himself.
Osaka got up from his place on the wall, and he strutted himself to the coffin. He peaked over.
Today, the man wore not the white cult suit from the Pound, but a simple, and dull outfit. He took off his grey jacket, his white shirt bulging out oddly, as his black shoes, matching his black suit pants, had rubbed against the table that Dreamer was placed upon.
“He knew.”
Everyone turned to the man. Osaka took a katana from inside his shirt, and now the cloth hugged him. The weapon had a sky blue diamond handle. The blade itself was an opaque diamond. Osaka placed it in Dreamer’s hands.
Jewel stopped him, gripping it and he glared at him. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“I thought perhaps—,”
Jewel grabbed it with both hands, and he threw back into Osaka’s chest, stepping forward. “You don’t touch his body. You don’t look at it. What the fuck happened there.”
“John already explained,” Smalls tried to explain.
“No, bullshit. John is a nice guy. We don’t even fuckin’ know Osaka- in fact. It seems his Japanese is a little shaky.” Jewel pushed Osaka now, speaking in Japanese quickly, with poison. Your ears weren’t the best in the language, but he did say something along the lines of, “Speak now or hold your peace, bitch.”
Osaka took the blows from Jewel. But he looked up. “We were all ambushed by Dream Gems. You know that they work under the Pound. We believe Chenle—,”
“BBall.” Mr. Money held his cane and separated the men.
“Listen. I’m sorry. I wanted to pay my respects—,” Osaka tried to reason.
“YOU DONT DO SHIT HERE!” Jewel roared, his eyes glowing with anguish. “YOU GOT HIM KILLED!”
“He’s not dead.” You said.
Everyone turned.
“Really? He’s okay? Di-,” Sushi started.
“He’s in a very deep, deep coma.” You slowly take your hand back, and put it in your pockets.
Henry teared up, hugging Smalls, “G-Good.”
“That doesn’t mean shit. Yuta needs to be investigated. On our last and final mission all of the sudden it goes wrong?” Jewel said as he glared at Osaka from the side of his eye.
“Then let’s attack The Pound.”
Johnny held your arm and gently pressed four times.
What.
Are.
You.
Doing.
“We need to make the Pound pay for what they did. And if Osaka isn’t bad, he’ll help.” You look at Osaka. “Won’t you?”
Osaka’s cold face suddenly melted to the side as he leans on a hip and he raised a brow, his smirk curving out as he said, almost naturally, “Perhaps I will for ya, doll.”
Johnny rolled his eyes. “Who should go with us?”
“Gogo. He’s reliable, after all he’s known Sushi for a long time too, hasn’t he?”
The big man nodded. “Yeah.”
You look at everyone. You planned for a bigger plan. A bigger dramatic. But that’s the Pound’s job. Right now, a plan, quite without common sense, was forming.
And the goal is was for you, and Johnny to be safe.
“For the Dreamer.” You said firmly.
“For the end.” The Ripple echoed back.

Farewell to Spooky Season, AHS Style: Lookbook no.12
Hi to anyone reading,
Happy belated Halloween!
I capitalise it because if I'm gonna recognise any day as sacred, it’s the spookiest one of the year! Halloween 2020 obviously hasn’t been as exciting as usual, parties and club nights being banned has meant there’s been far less opportunities to dress up, but I still managed to get out for the night before they announced the upcoming second lockdown and do a couple of spooky movie nights (and carve a pumpkin!)!
I originally intended for this lookbook to be last minute halloween costume inspo but I was lazy and didn’t manage to get it out on time-a lot of these looks minus the makeup and maybe an accessory or two could work on any day or night out so I thought I’d go ahead and post it now anyway. Celebrating the fashion moments of American Horror Story is something I’ve wanted to do for a while; it’s probably not the first show you’d think of for sartorial inspiration but Mr. Ryan Murphy has fucking fantastic taste in stylists and the first five seasons of AHS in particular, which I’ll be focussing on in this post, have given us SO many amazing looks. The man may be guilty of many things-subjecting us to the character of Will Schuester, trying to turn Richard Ramirez into a thirst trap, embarrassing everyone who raved about how good Scream Queens was when he wrote season 2-but costume related laziness is not one of them. We see more consistency in a Ryan Murphy character’s wardrobe than we do in their story arcs and I respect that because honestly, as much as I love joining in when it comes to ripping into his ability to cohesively bring an AHS season to a close when it airs, I’d probably be the same; if you put Lady Gaga in front of me and told me to write her lines I’d probably end up getting overly invested in what her character was going to be wearing in the scene too.
So! Enough Ryan Murphy bashing from me! I’ll get on with it! Starting with 3 season 1 inspired looks:
Murder House: Elizabeth Short, Tate Langdon and Violet Harmon

When it comes to reflecting on season 1 of American Horror Story, all I can say do is thank the internet overlords that Tumblr has moved on from the romanticising school shooters and wearing normal people scare me tops phase to instead collectively taking the piss out of the “GO AWAY, TATE!”, “YOU’RE ALL THAT I WANTTT! YOU’RE ALL THAT I HAVEEE!” exchange.
In terms of fashion *moments*, whilst season 1 doesn’t stand out as much as the seasons that come after, Violet and Tate’s wardrobes did give birth to a bit of a 90s grunge renaissance with their oversized knits and faded jeans and layering of textures. It did also give us good costumes in the form of Alexandra Breckenridge’s Moira O’Hara and Mena Suvari’s portrayal of the Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short; unfortunately, I didn’t have a slutty maid costume lying around so I did the best I could at giving the outfit Elizabeth wears when she makes that fateful visit to the Murder House a modern, more party appropriate update.
In terms of season rankings, Murder House isn’t my favourite. It starts off really great but lulls a bit towards the end and I could never get behind Violet and Tate as a couple because you know, one of them is a school shooter who sexually assaults the other’s mum, and that’s a hurdle that I think most couples might struggle to get over irl. That being said, it was the season that started it all and showcased some of the most innovative writing and directing on TV, and it opened up a spot for horror on primetime television which as far as I know was kind of unheard of before then. Back when I first watched it, I had no idea what to expect not only because I’d never seen horror in a serial format but also because it seemed to be able to get away with the kind of storylines you’d expect network executives to fire people over. It introduced us to Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters and Denis O’Hare who would go on to make the show what it is today and more importantly, through Jessica’s glorious portrayal of Constance Langdon, provide us with an endlessly versatile meme format for this trying time.

Asylum: ‘60s Lana Winters, ‘70s Lana Winters, and Sister Mary Eunice McKee

I think we can all agree: Asylum would’ve been a perfect series of television if it wasn’t for the completely unnecessary alien storyline. Like, I get that they fit in with the whole good vs. evil theme as a kind of non-biblical alternative to the idea of a higher, all-powerful being but there was already so much going on that it just wasn’t needed. Aside from that, I think the general consensus amongst watchers of the show is that Asylum has the best writing of any season and I think I’d tend to agree. It’s not my favourite because it’s too depressing to rewatch but if we’re talking the first time round, this is the series that had me hooked. Lana Winters?
Iconic.
Sister Mary Eunice? Iconic. The Name Game? Iconic. Remember when you couldn’t go a day on Facebook without seeing that one photo of Naomi Grossman as Pepper used as the go to “what I really look like” photo in one of those “expectation vs. reality” style posts on your newsfeed? Those were simpler times.
Because this season was mostly situated within the hospital, we didn’t get that many proper outfits but when we did, they were stunning; if I had to state my absolute favourite AHS character of the entire show I’d probably go with Lana Winters and the part her wardrobe played in her characterisation would 100% play a part in that. The late 60s/early 70s was such a wonderful period for fashion and through her character we get to see both of those explored a little. Of course there’s also *that* Sister Mary Eunice scene with the red slip dress and suspenders too which yes, could be a perfect halloween costume, but I also strongly believe should be a perfectly acceptable outfit for any day of the year.
Coven: Misty Day, Madison Montgomery, and Zoe Benson

I hate to be a basic bitch but I have to say it: Coven is my favourite season of American Horror Story. Once you get over the complete waste of Evan Peters’ acting capabilities that resulted from the *choice* to have him play Kyle, the unnecessary rehash of the Evan/Taissa pairing from season 1 in what I can only assume was an attempt to capitalise on the popularity of the questionable Tate/Violet relationship, and the subsequent sacrifice of any interesting character arc we could’ve foreseen for Zoe Benson beyond her obsessing over a resurrected, non-verbal frat boy, it’s a perfect season. A supreme (heh) balance of horror, humour, and character drama, as well as the stunning aesthetics and forever quotable dialogue, make it my go-to season if I’m ever considering a rewatch. And if you disagree, let me jog your memory with the most mainstream (not to get all “normal people scare me” and suggest AHS is not a mainstream show, I literally just mean in the sense that even those who have never watched the show will have seen this) reaction GIF set any FX show has even spawned:
Buzzfeed employees had a field day, Emma Roberts enthusiasts (I mean me) finally saw her cemented as the pop culture icon Scream Queens has since showed us she deserves to be (because not enough people have seen Unfabulous, Nancy Drew or Scream 4) and the gays everywhere rejoiced at the year’s worth of meme fodder they’d been provided with. It was Madison Montgomery’s world and we were truly just living in it.
And the fashion! I mean, Stevie Nicks meets 21st century teenage witches! Come on!
Freakshow: Dandy Mott, Maggie Esmerelda and Elsa Mars

When people talk about the declining quality of AHS, they usually point to Freakshow as the beginning of the end, but I have to completely disagree. I wasn’t a fan the first time round but on rewatch it’s probably the most emotional season of them all; no, there aren’t as many “horrifying” moments as in other seasons and Elsa is probably Jessica’s worst performance (which is still an incredible one by anybody else’s standards), however it makes up for it with the most sympathetic bunch of characters yet, and on the flip side, also one of the most amusingly depraved with Finn Wittrock’s Dandy Mott. Fans usually argue that the season went downhill once *SPOILER* Twisty the Clown was killed off but for me, he really primarily served as the catalyst for the far more interesting devolution of Dandy, who, imo, is the show’s strongest villain to date, rivalled only by Bloody Face. Then there was the episode Orphans too which made me cry buckets, the sole AHS episode to do so.
We got a lot of great fashion content in this season too: the theatrical opulence of Elsa Mars’ wardrobe, “Maggie”’s nomadic fortune teller costumes, and all those twee suits we saw Finn Wittrock in. Highly underrated if you ask me. It seems an odd choice for me to use Elsa’s Dominatrix look as an inspiration for one of my looks here when we have that Life on Mars performance outfit and all the extravagant robes Jessica got to waltz around in for reference buuuut I didn’t really have anything to do the vibrancy of either of those justice so I went with the black leather option which is much more me. Am I saying I moonlight as a dominatrix? Maybe. Lol, no. I wish. It’s not for lack of trying. WHERE ARE ALL THE GENUINE TWITTER PAYPIGS AT!? Your girl wants to insult creepy men and get some new clothes out of it xoxo
Hotel: Hypodermic Sally, Liz Taylor, and The Countess

Hotel is another season that I liked a lottttt more upon rewatch, once I knew I was okay to tune out the (completely predictable and utterly nonsensical) Ten Commandments Killer storyline that so much of the season initially seems to hinge on. I love Chloë Sevigny but the fact that her and Wes Bentley’s wooden John and Alex Lowe are positioned as the protagonists at the expense of the far more interesting Liz Taylor, James March and Hypodermic Sally really does a disservice to what is an otherwise great season upon initial viewing.
The visuals this season are magnificent and I think if I had to pick one character’s wardrobe to steal from the entire cast of AHS characters, it would be The Countess (a toss up between her and Misty Day tbh, so I kinda just settle for low-key channelling both). No fucking idea where I'd wear any of her clothes to but I’d make it work. Liz Taylor and Hypodermic Sally have some amazing looks too-there’s just honestly so much to choose from; that being said, this post wouldn’t be complete without a specific ode to the vampire goddess Elizabeth Bathory, who is everything I want to be in life minus the murderous qualities:

Lady Gaga is really a fucking goddess isn’t she. And people were claiming before they’d even seen it that she couldn’t act? A patriarchal society doesn’t like women that can do it all. Just saying.

I’ve got so much content planned and it sucks because a couple of them are lookbooks which now feel completely redundant given we’re heading into a second lockdown, but maybe I should just do it anyway? The grunge inspired moodboard I just did seemed to get a good reception too so I’ve got some more of them planned.

185. porky’s hero agency (1937)
release date: december 4th, 1937
series: looney tunes
director: bob clampett
starring: mel blanc (porky, emperor jones), tedd pierce (gorgon, assistant), sara berner (porky’s mom)
the final porky cartoon for 1937, and what a busy year it’s been for him! hard to believe he had an entirely different voice, look, and demeanor just 8 months prior. even then, his character still had much to explore, as we see here—in this cartoon, he’s cast as a child again. curiously, bob clampett is often credited as the one who refined his personality into the one we know today (he did give him his iconic suit and tie), but, like everything else, it was more of a collaborative exploration by all of the directors.
the title card is one of the more interesting title cards in the warner bros. repertoire—it’s a photo of a porky statuette! bob clampett would make several statues during his time at WB and distribute them to his top animators. while the statue in the credits is painted over, you can view an unpainted model here!
here, porky dreams of the wonders of ancient greece, prancing around as the mythological messenger parkykarkus. however, a gorgon has her sights set on turning him into stone, and it requires some quick thinking from porky to weasel his way out of this mess.
bobe cannon animates the expositional sequence, with porky propped up in bed, sucked into a giant book full of greek myths. his mother (offscreen) tells him it’s time to go to sleep, but porky objects, protesting that he was just at the exciting part. cannon’s animation is easy to spot with his trademark buck teeth, yet the gestures he gives porky--finger points, turning the page, etc.--give him a nice dose of youthful energy as he recaps the story, telling tales of gorgons and “great great great” greek heroes.
nevertheless, a disembodied hand turns out the light, dismissing porky’s protests. he heaves a resigned sigh, lamenting how he wishes he could be a great greek hero.
the cartoon doesn’t make any attempts to keep the dream sequence a surprise--instead, the face of the book’s cover takes up the entire screen, the pillars emblazoned on the front melting to life as we fade into ancient greece. and, as to be expected, our favorite porcine hero proudly stands in front of the building, proudly advertising “HERO FOR HIRE AGENCY -- PORKYKARKUS PROP.”
porkykarkus is a play on parkykarkus (”park your carcass”), a character on eddie cantor’s radio show “the chase & sanborn hour”. truck into porky’s services as he narrates over the specials:
“has anybody any eh-deh-deah-deah-dragons you want seh-seh-sleh-slay-slaye--rubbed out? or maybe ya have some, uh, fair meh-mai-meh-maide--honeys ya want rescued! it’s a peh-pleasure. is your daughter safe? phone eh-peh-porkykarkus at olympia 2222!”
porky’s narration, as always, is fun to listen to, and the physical advertisement has its own charm and appeal, with discounts and deals on certain rescues. not only that, but it’s a damn smart way to save money, having just the narration over the still frame. smart thinking!
conveniently, porky gets a phone call, sparking the tried and true “gear up for a big sprint but merely tinker on over to your destination” gag. as porky answers the phone, filling us in by repeating the hidden dialogue from the other line, we find out it’s the emperor--he wants one hero to go.
chuck jones’ layouts stick out quite strongly throughout this cartoon, especially in the human designs. porky’s statue of mercury is no exception--the bulbous nose and rounded body construction are all surefire trademarks of his work. porky grabs the messenger’s hat and winged shoes from the statue, never once taking a beat to stop as he hobbles along, dressing as he prepares to head out. woodblock sounds simulate the sound of his hooves clopping, but also add an extra jaunty jive to the merry score of “have you got any castles?” in the background, the cartoon’s motif. it would also be a merry melody courtesy of frank tashlin not even a year later.
with that, porky takes off, soaring in the skies like a pro with his winged shoes. if the scene wasn’t appealing enough with the overhead layouts, the animation of porky steadying himself is wonderfully smooth and fun--the cherry on top. he circles the palace where the emperor is located, swooping down to his destination. complete with airplane sound effects, of course.
“howdy, empy!” another bulbous-nosed jones character silences porky from behind his armchair. emperor jones (boy, who could that name reference, i wonder?) speaks in a ridiculously hilarious dialect, completed with a thick accent: “shh! i’m making a fireside chat with my sheeps!” his voice then slips into a rooseveltian draw as he coos “my friends, grecians and customers, this is emperor jones speaking...”
pan to the audience, which consists of a sea of smiling statues. this entire speech sequence is wonderful--not only is his terrible grammar terribly amusing, (”statistics show... what last season at this time was population in greece from 6,000 with 500 with 54 people, with 17 statues.”) but little touches such as one of the audience statues roasting marshmallows and later a hotdog over the fireplace, the emperor making his audience clap by pulling on ropes tied to their arms, and so forth make the entire charade highly amusing with lots of details to look out for. porky standing idly in the background, awkwardly fidgeting as he tries not to intrude is a great little piece of character animation as well.
the emperor gives the skinny, all while chowing down on a hotdog: a gorgon has been turning more and more people into statues, and they need a hero to steal her life-restoring needle in order to turn all of the statues back into humans again. the hero he has in mind is, of course, porky, who bashfully accepts the offer. when the emperor asks those in favor to raise their right hand, he pulls on a lever that causes all of the statues to raise their hands in unison, including a hand on a nearby clock. with a handshake, empy concludes “it’s a deal!”
one of the most impressive pieces of animation in the cartoon (i actually dedicated an entire drawing to it!) is when the emperor sends porky on his way, who waves goodbye as he flies through the air with his winged shoes. just as he tips his hat, he knocks into a pillar, which sends him tumbling upside down, but still airborne. the wings on his shoes form hands as they shake their fists in the glory of the good landing, with porky flashing a cheeky grin to the audience before spiraling lower in the air, regaining his balance, and barreling onward towards a smoldering volcano. the animation is full of life and character--though porky is consistently jolly in the B&W clampett cartoons, the grin towards the camera as he prides himself in his save is a great little touch of personality. slowly but surely, bits of character are now becoming more defined.
a gag that took me just now to recognize it--porky swoops into the heart of the volcano, where we spot the source of the black fumes pouring out the top: the gorgon statue factory. a merry score of “you’ve got something there” serves as some easy listening as we’re treated to a sign gag:
outside of the factory is a human picket fence, comprised of familiar faces: statues of bobe cannon, norm mccabe, john carey, bob clampett himself and chuck jones surround the area. directly outside of the factory is the frozen statue of a salesman with his foot in the door--the joke is not only amusing, but the pose is quite strong and readable, too. though nowhere near the dynamism of frank tashlin’s poses in the mid ‘40s, clampett’s poses in this cartoon are quite defined and exaggerated for the time period. this is especially sharp in the scenes with the emperor.
porky knocks on the door held ajar by the ceramic statue’s foot, holding out an envelope. “telegram for the guh-geh-gee-geh-gee-gor-geh--” a hand snags the envelope out of porky’s grip, causing him to mutter “aww, nuh-neh-nee-nuh-neh-neh-nut--shucks,” a phrase he echoed in clampett’s previous entry, rover’s rival.
we transition to the inside of the factory, where we see the gorgon herself, positioned in front of a camera, awaiting to take “pictures” of her models. tedd pierce voices the gorgon, whose vocal stylings are a parody of tizzie lish, bill comstock’s character on al pearce and his gang. interestingly, the cartoon before this, the woods are full of cuckoos, featured a caricature of lish as well, also voiced by pierce.
clampett and pierce’s comedic timing is sharp--not nearly as sharp as tashlin’s timing in the woods are full of cuckoos, but abundantly amusing nonetheless. the gorgon asks for a boy--”a sorta young-ish one”--and in comes a decrepit old man who can hardly hold himself up. the gorgon waits for the man to assume his position on the podium where his picture will be taken, singing a pitchy rendition of “am i in love?“, another homage to the characteristics displayed by lish’s character on the radio.
the gorgon snaps her photo, which turns the shaky old man into a stone statue at once, cheekily labeled “ANTIQUE -- $60,000 (P.S.: 000,000)” before he’s yanked off of the podium with a cane.
“now let’s try a group picture.” you know it’s a ‘30s cartoon if the three stooges come waddling in--they made their caricatured, cartoon debut in the 1934 film the miller’s daughter, notorious for being chuck jones’ first animation credit. as expected, they all beat the tar out of each other while on the podium, rendered immobile only through the power of medusa’s camera. they turn into the three wise monkeys, labeled “3 MONKEYS OF JAPAN -- MADE IN GREECE”.
norm mccabe’s animation is easy to spot in the next scene with porky, characterized by his signature double eyebrows. porky knocks on a door, parroting a favorite catchphrase from the al pearce show that frequented many a clampett cartoon: “i hope she’s eh-eh-at home, i hope, i hope, i hope, i hope, i hope...”
porky shakes the hand of the assistant, unfortunately a blackface caricature (save for the voice, who is just tedd pierce speaking in a deep, suave voice) as he greets “welcome, stranger. won’t you come in?” before porky has time to answer, he’s yanked through the iron bars of the door and placed neatly in line for the photoshoot, where he peeks through the door to see the action inside.
a pile of men form a pyramid, where the camera turns them into a literal statue of a pyramid, with some slight imperfections. “aw, shucks!” laments the gorgon. “you moved!” she approaches them with her life restoring needle, allowing the men to form into the proper position, maintaining good balance. she gets her “genuine egyptian statue”, quipping “ought to make a handy paperweight!”
the assistant informs porky that he’s next. porky backs up anxiously, echoing a short-lived catchphrase of his from the joe dougherty era: “nuh-neh-no! eh-nn-nee-no! a-a thousand times no!” the decision to make his thoughts visible (his head is slapped onto that of a piggy bank’s) is playful, and also reflects just how big of an influence comics had on bob clampett’s work: comic artists such as milt gross and george lichty have been cited by clampett as inspirations. the george lichty influence is definitely noticeable in rod scribner’s animation under bob clampett, as we’ll discover in the coming years.
in the midst of his panic, porky backs into a statue of "dick a. powello” (dick powell and apollo), causing it to break. but, rather than fuss over the mess, porky uses the opportunity to hatch an idea instead.
in comes strolling porky, concealed by powello’s upper body and a blankett hiding his hooves. the triumphant score of “he was her man” and the gorgon’s smitten woos makes the scene hilarious as is, but the blanket falling off and revealing porky’s pudgy little hooves is the icing on the comedic cake.
porky perches himself on a conveniently placed couch, where the gorgon approaches him. “pardon me, is this seat taken?” she doesn’t wait a wink before snuggling right up to him, a heart symbolizing her affections popping in the air. though clampett would play with typography at times and maintain an overarchingly jovial mood to his cartoons, it’s an odd thing to see him play with comic-like visuals in this manner, such as porky physically envisioning himself as a piggy bank or the heart from the gorgon. i wish he had done it more in this nature!
with the gorgon too close for comfort, porky uses this as an opportunity to grab the gorgon’s life-restoring needle, dangling from her neck and lying against her body. it wouldn’t be a clampett cartoon without sexual innuendos--porky reaches aimlessly around for the needle, prompting the gorgon to let out a shriek, cooing “why, mr. a POWELLo!”
she smothers the ceramic head in kisses, giving him a nice lipstick finish to boot as she pretends the statue has given her a ring. her ecstasy is hilarious and WONDERFULLY conveyed through strong, rubbery poses worth freeze-framing. picturing porky’s befuddlement is another humor within itself.
finally, porky’s disguise is revealed when the gorgon literally crushes the statue in an embrace, stone crumbling around him as he desperately slips out of her grip. as the gorgon makes threats to call the cops, reciting the WB favorite catchphrase of “calling all cars! calling all cars!”, porky makes with the needle and jabs it in various statues, warning them “uh-geh-uh-get goin’! i-i-eh-it’s the guh-geh-geh-eh-geh-gorgon!”
as the gorgon chases porky with her camera, he continues to revive a barrage of statues: the antique, the famed discus thrower (who throws himself out of the scene rather than the discus), the man from the end of the trail statue, who exits riding his horse like a merry go round (a nod to friz freleng’s sweet sioux), a woman who marches off with popeye’s forearms--note the bobe cannon statue in the back here--and a mermaid who unzips her fin and makes a run for it. the highlight of the entire montage is when porky approaches two temples (the two of them together labeled “shirley temple”) and injects the needle into them, prompting the temples to use their pillars as legs and run for the hills.
the chase reaches its climax as the gorgon pursues porky with a movie camera, turning the crank ferociously as she runs. her plan works--porky slows down, freezing in mid-air as the gorgon cries “hold it!” thus, the gorgon pins porky to the ground, who tries his hardest to fight back, but ultimately flailing around as she commands him to open his eyes.
we melt into the present, where we find porky’s mother in place of the gorgon, telling him softly to wake up. he does so, after she pries one of his eyes opens. relieved that it was all a dream, he embraces his mother, prompting a happy end and an iris out.
this cartoon has a soft spot in my heart--it was one of the first LT cartoons i saw on this whole venture. i thought i was the smartest person alive, understanding the three stooges, popeye, and shirley temple references. who knew just how much i had (and still have!) to learn! though even without my sentimental biases, this still stands as a very good cartoon.
as i mentioned previously, the poses in this are full of elasticity and energy, especially in the emperor and the gorgon. porky does a very nice job as well--little pieces of animation such as him fidgeting awkwardly while the emperor rambles on, swinging from side to side as he’s offered the job to be a hero, etc. etc. are full of charm and character. while his personality isn’t the most electric in comparison to characters like bugs and daffy, it’s the little things like these that really make porky stand out. with him, a little subtlety goes a long way, and that’s why he’s one of my favorites. he’s so reserved in comparison to such a wild cast of characters that his timidness actually shines through and sets him apart! (though, on the other hand, he can still have quite the personality, as we’ll discover!)
personally, the only gripes i have with this cartoon is the blackface caricatured assistant (which, in comparison to some cartoons we’ve seen and still have yet to see, is relatively mild, but uncomfortable nonetheless). the jokes, while corny at times, still hit, the animation is full of life and vigor, and the short as a whole has a lot of charm, whimsy, and personality. it has my seal of approval! go check it out!

“You know, with (Y/N) looking that good in her dress, I’m sure the prime minister wouldn’t think twice about taking her upstairs.” Sam spoke softly into the comm, as he took a sip from his drink and looked towards Carol. She rolled her eyes, looking his way across for a quick second, giving him a death glare.
“Watch it, Wilson” she spoke back, smiling at the guests who walked past her. Sam chuckled lightly at her reaction.
“Just thought you would agree with me, Captain” he mocked, turning away from Carol as she rolled her eyes again. She knew being sent on this mission with the new recruit it would be annoying. But she had to focus on getting to the target, and that was you.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had set out a mission to track you down and get you to join the team because of your skill set. You would get to the targets before they would and would eventually leave Carol and the rest of the team with no leads or new information. At some point, you and the team had crossed paths on other missions but tonight was going to be the night that they got something before you were able to.
Carol had previous history with you, having trained together with another institution until it lead to a short relationship between the both of you. It didn’t last long because once you transferred to P.E.G.A.S.U.S. , it put a strain on your relationship and your schedules. Your feelings for each other were strong and there was no denying that, everyone could see it. But you and Carol had thought it would be better to end it instead of strain yourselves more.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had thought putting Carol on the mission would get you off track on your own mission so they could win for once. Carol was all in for the plan but another part of her just wanted to see you. Your case file photos didn’t do her justice because she physically missed seeing you, face to face.
You on the other hand, had no clue that Carol was going to be in the same place as you. P.E.G.A.S.U.S. had tipped you off that you might get caught up with other spies but you brushed it off, thinking it was going to be another round of spies that you can easily avoid. But you could sense that something would go sideways or catch you off guard about tonight.
Pushing the feeling away, thinking it’s just your normal nervousness, you sip slowly on your drink, looking at the Prime Minister enter the room surrounded by guards.
“Stay on mission, (Y/L/N). Can’t have anything going south” your co-worker, Jade, said into your earpiece. You let out a small chuckle, placing your drink on the table and looking down.
“Have I ever let you down, J? At least have a little faith” you said as you heard her sigh back in the ear piece as you picked up your clutch, watching as the prime minister sit down in the corner of the ballroom while the guards looked around. Other women started entering his area and that was your queue to go over.
As you began walking over, you felt someone watching you from across the room. Looking over, you didn’t see anyone specific until your eyes landed on Sam Wilson. Letting out a small grunt, you remember him from the last mission. He tried to take you down before you slipped out of the building with the hard drive that had all the information to expose an underground human trafficking ring. Stopping at the nearest table that was next to the dance floor, you were halfway to where the Prime Minister was but you had to make sure Wilson stayed out of your way.
Sam made his way over to you as Carol went the other way, out of your eyesight. Seeing you in your dress and how you looked, he was right. You did look good. You looked stunning and all she wanted to do was tell you that. You haven’t changed besides you hair grew a bit longer but Carol still admired how strongly you stood and how you only got more beautiful since the last time she saw you.
“Wilson, what a surprise!” You said sarcastically as he approached you, sipping on his drink while standing next to you at the small round table.
“Don’t get too excited now, I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of me” he winked at you, referring to the offer that stood with joining his cooporation before looking you up and down as you rolled your eyes.
“You know what I’m going to say, I’m not joining” you said, standing up straight and looking at him. He let out a chuckle before putting his glass down onto the table.
“Well if I can’t persuade you, maybe someone else you know can” he said, winking at you again before walking off. Giving him a confused look, you turn back to look at your target before letting out a small yelp.
Feeling someone grab your waist and turn you around, you let out a gasp when your body hit theirs. It didn’t help when you saw who had their arm around you. Carol stood there, swaying back and forth, letting a smile onto her face.
“We meet again, angel” she said, using the pet name she used to tell you all the time.
“Carol, what are you-“ you started but she shushed you by raising your arm and spinning you around before pulling you back in, your back against her chest.
“I’m here to do my job. Just like you” she said, as you spun out, extending both of your arms and going back into your beginning dancing position as Carol place her hand on your waist and intertwined the other hand with yours.
“I see you’re still cocky, but here’s the thing babe” you said, leaning in closer to her ear. “You’re wasting your time with me when the target is over there” you said, before pulling back, letting go of her hand and walking over to the prime ministers area. Carol watched you walk over, easily swaying the guards to let you through and sat down next to him, giving him a flirtatious smile.
Carol walked over to where Sam was standing and sighed. “Couldn’t sway your ex, Danvers?” He said, which caused him to get bumped in the shoulder as he let out a chuckle.
“You know for someone who is a big talker on how good they are at their job, you sure do a whole lot of standing around” Carol spoke to him, giving him a sly smile as now it was his turn to roll his eyes. They decided to watch your movements and if you left the room, they would follow suit.
You stood up and the Prime Minister followed, suit, looking you up and down while licking his lips softly. Your gagged inwardly, turning to walk past the guards as he whispered something to them before they nodded to them. You saw Carol and Sam watching you from a nearby table and you smirked at them, sending them a wink before walking over to the exit with the Prime Minister in suit.

When you came up to the room, he had tried to get his hands all over you immediately. You pulled away, wagging your finger at him.
“How about a drink first” you suggested to which he nodded and immediately started taking his tie and jacket off. Going up to the table with alcohol on it, you grabbed two glasses and poured whiskey into both. Pulling out a small vile of white powder from your dress, you poured some into his glass before placing it back and swishing the drink around in the glass.
Turning around, you saw he was sitting on the bed as you sat next to him and gave him his glass. “Cheers” you said, clinking the glasses before taking a sip. He drank the whole drink before placing the glass on the floor before scooting closer to you, trying to kiss you when you moved your face away and grabbing his tie that was on the mattress.
“How about we try something” you suggested, motioning to the tie to which he turned to look and nodded eagerly, a smirk landing on his face as he scooted up to the headboard.
Tying his hands to the headboard, he let out a laugh as he watched you stand beside him, going through your clutch. “I see you like to play rough, don’t you?” He said, taking his shoes off with his feet as you chuckled.
“What can I say, I always get what I want” you said, looking at him over your shoulder before turning back around and bringing out a small cellphone copying device that you covered with a blinfold.
“Well I’ll give you whatever you want, baby” you turned towards him, smiling before putting the blindfold around his eyes. “But right now, you can dream of it” you said, finishing tying the blinfold.
“What do you- what did you do..to me” Mid-sentence, he knocked out and you rolled your eyes, putting your heels back on. Taking his phone from his pants pocket, you plugged it up to the copying machine and it took a few minutes to download the information.
“J, it’s downloading” you said, pressing softly onto the earpiece.
“Good. Once it’s done, get out of there. The guards are tipped off that someone has infiltrated them” she said back as you nodded softly to yourself, getting everything together for you to leave.
There was a knock to the door which made you stop in your footsteps.
“Sir? I’m sorry to interrupt but we have to go. We’ve been compromised” you heard a security guard say, as you turned towards the cell phone seeing it was only at ‘43%’.
“Shit” you muttered, looking over to the Prime Minister, passed out with his hands tied up. The guard knocked again, this time a bit harder before you heard a keycard being inserted and the door opening. Two guards walked in and stopped in their tracks looking at you and the Minister knocked out on the bed.
“Guess we had too much fun. Wanna join?” You smiled at them before you saw them reach for their guns and that’s where you took your cue, taking off your heel and throwing it at his head. He looked stunned for a second before pulling out the gun from his holster but you were quick to kick the gun from his grasp.
He was quick to throw a punch to which you blocked and then landed a punch to his face. Kicking his knees in, making him fall to the floor, it gave you better access to pull his arms behind him and pinch a pressure point on his shoulder that made someone immediately knock out.
The second guard came in charging towards you, swinging that you dodged the punch but his other arm came around and hit you square on the jaw, it made you land next to the guard on the ground. Looking over to his belt, you saw he had a stun gun. Taking the stun gun quickly, you aimed it to the second guard and pulled the trigger, causing him to stop in his tracks for a quick second before falling to the ground.
Letting out a breath, you stood up, putting back on your heel you had thrown and straightening out your dress. Grabbing the copying device and the Ministers phone, you saw it said 100% complete before unplugging the device and placing it in your clutch and walking out of the room, shutting the door behind you.
“You know, you could’ve just taken out your stun pen from your clutch” Jade said into your ear piece as you laughed, walking over to the elevator and pressing the button.
“But if I did that, then I wouldn’t have any fun” you said back smiling as she laughed. You heard footsteps running down the hallway coming your way. Turning towards the sound, you see Sam and Carol standing at the end of the hallway.
“Shit” you muttered, looking up seeing the elevator was only two floors below.
“(Y/N), give us the device” Sam said, slowly walking towards you as Carol followed him. She didn’t know what to do but she knew she didn’t want to pull her gun on you.
“Why should I? I got eye raped for the information so, I don’t think I will” you smiled politely at him, hearing the elevator come up.
“(Y/N), please, just give it up and join our team. We wouldn’t be in this competition if we were on the same team” Carol said, coming closer as you turned fully towards her.
“If you can’t handle the heat, get out the kitchen, babe” you winked as the elevator dinged and the doors opened to which you swiftly stepped onto, pressing the ground floor and the close door button.
Carol rushed to the doors, going to keep them open but something stopped her so she just stood on the outside of the doors staring at you.
You gave her a smirk, looking her up and down. A part of you missed her so seeing her infront of you gave you a bit of remedy for the longing feelings that you still had for this girl. But being on separate teams just made it more fun to chase each other and have a competition.
“We’ll meet again, Danvers” you winked as the elevator doors closed. Staring at the doors, Sam stood next to Carol looking at her, wondering why she didn’t stop you. Before he could say anything, they both heard guards running up the emergency exit stairs to which they took that as their cue to leave the floor.
Carol knew she’d see you again and hopefully next time, she would win and not you. “It’s on, (Y/L/N)” she muttered to herself as she ran with Sam our of that floor and out of the building.

Maybe I'm repeating myself, but I'm a stubborn person. I also really like the photo shoot (and of course the interview) for Harper's Bazaar magazine. Whoever came up with this style, chose the clothes and where the photos were taken deserves huge applause. The photos from this session are amazing. On the occasion of the anniversary of the WOH broadcast, I wanted to stay in the atmosphere related to WOH. And these photos fit this atmosphere very, very strongly. However, for a change, I decided on black and white. From many ZZH photos, I chose this one in black and white. I have written many times why I like such photos, I will not write it anymore. I want to focus on the photo. A photo referring to the WOH series on various levels. It's nice for the viewer to find these references. It is known that ZZH played the role of ZZS. An inseparable element of ZZS's journeys was the waterskin. In the photo, ZZH is holding such a waterskin. Another thing is the way ZZH sits, it reminds us of the way WKX sat when he watched ZZS fighting the ghosts. This is the second episode of WOH. ZZH was arranged in the same style, as if ZZS was a mirror image of WKX. And just as WKX held a bottle of alcohol, ZZH holds a bottle of alcohol. ZZH also has a similar facial expression to GJ while playing WKX. ZZH, dressed in an Adidas outfit that suits his personality, looks dignified here. Even regally, as if he were a king sitting on a throne and looking at his subjects. I like the expression on ZZH's face, which is hard to read here. Equally difficult to decipher was WKX's facial expression. But I think ZZH is more majestic here (sorry to all the GJ fans), and this black and white photo highlights it even more. It's hard for me to take my eyes off this photo. Just like the rest. Well, this is real ZZH. .

The Bromacker Project Part VI: Seymouria sanjuanensis, the Tambach Lovers

Two exquisitely preserved, nearly complete adult skeletons of Seymouria sanjuanensis that were discovered in the Bromacker quarry in 1997. Photo by Dave Berman.
At lunchtime on the last day of the 1997 field season, Thomas Martens discovered the two exquiste specimens shown above, the only fossils found that year. Thomas had uncovered a piece of the hip region with some attached vertebrae that resembled, once again, those of the ancient amphibian Seymouria. Because our work time was limited, we estimated the length of the specimen and rushed to extract it from the quarry. When we flipped the block over, a few pieces of rock fell out, revealing a series of vertebrae of a second individual in the block. We were thrilled to learn that Thomas had discovered two specimens of Seymouria. We put the rock pieces back in place and quickly finished plastering the block. There was just enough time for Dave, Stuart Sumida, and I to return to our hotel, clean up, quickly pack, and meet Thomas, his family, and his fossil preparator Georg Sommer for a celebratory dinner. What a great way to end the field season.

Seymouria had already been known from the Bromacker quarry. Thomas had discovered and identified two skulls in 1985, fossils he brought with him when he came to Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) in 1993 to study for six months with Dave Berman under a CMNH-financed fellowship. Both skulls were of juvenile individuals. Of the two known species of Seymouria, Dave and Thomas were excited to discover that the Bromacker skulls were nearly identical to those of Seymouria sanjuanensis. The 1997 lunchtime discovery of the two complete adult specimens confirmed the identification of the Bromacker Seymouria as S. sanjuanensis.
The first discovered species of Seymouria was Seymouria baylorensis, from near Seymour, Baylor County, Texas, from which its name was derived. Seymouria sanjuanensis was first found in San Juan County, Utah, by Dave Berman and the field team he was leading as a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dave’s advisor, Dr. Peter Vaughn, named it Seymouria sanjuanensis in reference to the county of discovery. Another discovery of five specimens of this species preserved together was made by Dave in New Mexico in 1982.

Seymouria baylorensis is geologically younger than S. sanjuanensis and has a more robust skull, larger and fewer teeth of variable size, and a subrectangular postorbital bone compared to the chevron-shaped postorbital of S. sanjuanensis.
Seymouria is considered a terrestrial amphibian that only returned to water to breed. Its strongly built skeleton provided the support needed to move on land. With its numerous, slender, pointed teeth, S. sanjuanensis most likely ate insects and small land-living vertebrates. We know that the Bromacker Seymouria didn’t consume fish, because not a single fish fossil, scrap of fish fossil, or fish coprolite (fossil poop) has ever been found at the Bromacker quarry. Study of the rock deposits preserving the fossils at the Bromacker indicate a lack of permanent water, which would explain the absence of fish.

Conditions for breeding must have been favorable in the Tambach Basin, the ancient basin where sediments preserving the Bromacker fossils accumulated, because several juvenile specimens of Seymouria are known. The smallest is a skull measuring about 3/4 of an inch long. In a study led by our colleague Josef Klembara (Comenius University, Slovak Republic), we determined that the smallest individual was post-metamorphic—in other words, no longer a tadpole—based on the presence of certain ossified bones in the skull. In tadpoles, these skull elements are cartilaginous; that is, they haven’t yet turned to bone.

The discovery in Germany of the same species of Seymouria previously known only from New Mexico and Utah has important implications in terms of paleobiogeography (the study of the distribution of species in space and time). At the time S. sanjuanensis was alive, the continents were merged to form the supercontinent Pangaea. The presence of S. sanjuanensis across Pangaea, north of a roughly east-west trending mountain range, indicates that climatic or physical barriers (e.g., deserts, inland seas, mountain ranges) didn’t prevent its dispersal.

The two Seymouria specimens preserved together were a big hit in the local region in Germany. Museum der Natur (MNG) exhibit preparator Peter Mildner nicknamed them the “Tambacher Liebespaar” (“Tambach Lovers”) after a painting entitled “Gothaer Liebespaar” (“Gotha Lovers”) on exhibit in the Herzogliches Museum of the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein (also the parent organization of MNG). This name caught on and is fondly used by our German friends and colleagues. Peter even made a fleshed-out model of the two Seymouria specimens in their death pose. The proprietor of the hotel in which we stayed hung a copy of the model of the Tambach Lovers and a framed collage of newspaper articles featuring the Bromacker on a wall in one of the hotel rooms, which she named the “Präparation Suite” (i.e. “Preparation Suite” in reference to the preparation of fossils). I often stayed in this room.

Sighing, he closed his eyes and sent the heavens a quick prayer for patience. Speak of the devil.

King frowned as he checked his watch. What was taking Bohn so long? Surely the meeting with the professors hadn't run that late. He sighed and shot Mek a text.
K: I'm at the Gear Statue. Where are you guys? Is the case still being discussed?
M: Still outside the Dean's office. They're taking longer than expected. Might be more serious than we thought.
K: Damn. Still can't believe it was the archi department the nongs brawled with. We've always had a decent relationship with them.
M: Yeah. But don't worry, we haven't seen any sign of the med kid yet. We'll make sure Bohn doesn't run into him.
K: Thanks. Sorry for taking up your afternoon.
M: Bohn's our friend, it's nothing.
King pocketed his phone with a smile. Mek and Boss were far too good to them. He swung his bag onto his shoulder as he got up. He'd better go find the Year 1s now, or he'd be late for their tutoring session.
"P'King!"
Sighing, he closed his eyes and sent the heavens a quick prayer for patience. Speak of the devil. Opening his eyes, he found Duen standing in front of him, holding a bouquet of flowers.
"N'Duen," he said coldly.
Duen flinched slightly at his tone. "Ah, sorry to trouble you, P'King. Do you mind helping me pass this to P'Bohn? I didn't manage to find him this morning to pass them to him myself."
"Don't worry, you can consider the deal over. You needn't bother."
"But I want to," Duen replied slightly desperately. "I have to make it up for hurting him."
King let his eyes fall to the bouquet Duen clutched. Purple hyacinths were interspersed with daffodils, all enclosed within a ring of fresh snowdrops. He mentally catalogued the flowers - forgiveness, new beginnings, hope.
"And why should I pass this to Bohn?" he asked. "What are you expecting, N'Duen?"
"I...I..." began Duen, stammering. He took a deep breath. "I wish to court P'Bohn!"
King raised his eyebrows. "Oh? But I thought you found his attention... troublesome."
Duen flushed. "I didn't mean it that way! It's just... P'Bohn can be kind of forceful. And there are a lot of people who aren't happy about his attention being on me, so...um... they take it out on me. It's a bit scary sometimes," he admitted.
King felt himself soften slightly. He'd grown up with Bohn and knew first-hand just how aggressive he could get when he wanted something. That and people could get very ugly sometimes, especially when it came to matters of the heart.
No wonder the kid had reacted so strongly. The stress of being pushed around by Bohn and the others had slowly built until he'd finally exploded. Bohn had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"But are you willing to deal with this?" King pressed. "There will probably be many times in the future that situations like this occur again. Who's to say that you won't react the way you did again? I don't want to watch my best friend get hurt."
Duen considered the question carefully. "P'King, I cannot guarantee you that I will never hurt P'Bohn again. We are both human, and we will end up making mistakes, some of which will hurt each other."
"But I can promise you that I've had the week to think about this,” he continued. “And I'm sure that P'Bohn is worth the effort. The future may be uncertain, but I'm willing to apologise for the mistakes I've made and will end up making. And if P'Bohn will have me, I hope to stay by his side for a long time."
King searched Duen's face for the slightest hint of insincerity, finding none. And the fact was, the type of relationship Duen and Bohn had was between the two of them. He had no right to determine it. Caving, he took the bouquet.
"Fine. I'll help you pass this to Bohn. But- !" he said as a smile spread across Duen's face. "First you'll need to convince Bohn to accept you on your own. Then you'll have to convince me that you're a good match for him."
Duen nodded frantically. "Yes, P'King! Thank you for giving me a chance!"
King sighed, already beginning to regret the decision. "Alright, alright. Scram," he said, walking off to find the Year 1s.
"P'King, over here!" shouted Phu.
King raised his hand in acknowledgement and strode over to the group of Years 1s huddled together at a bench in the Engineering Faculty's garden.
"Hello nongs, I've heard that you need some help. Your midterms coming up?" he asked, leaning against the side of the table.
Phu nodded frantically. "Yes Phi, but we're all lost when it comes to indeterminate forms of limits and L'Hospital's rule."
"Ah. Yeah, it can be a bit tricky to wrap your head around at first. Let me see, we can work through an example together."
King spent the next ten minutes explaining the concepts, first to the entire group, then tailoring the explanation to suit the individuals who still couldn't fully grasp it. When he had satisfactorily cleared the theoretical doubts, he assigned the group a set of questions from the textbook to try applying what they had learnt.
After giving them five minutes to attempt the questions on their own, he began walking around, checking their work and offering corrections and guidance to those who needed it. As he pointed out a mistake to one of the students, he heard Phu call out.
"Ram! I saved you a seat. Hurry up, P'King has already started tutoring!"
King felt his heart rate pick up. What were the chances that this was some other 1st year engineering student also named Ram?
He felt more than saw someone settle down opposite the student he was helping. King's palms grew sweaty. Still torn between wanting to know and remaining ignorant of who exactly had joined them, he forced himself to focus on the worksheet.
When he finished pointing out the errors and could delay no further, he slowly straightened up. His eyes dragged across the books stacked on the table to muscular forearms encased in a crisp white shirt, travelling along the length of a slim black tie, before arriving at a familiar face.
King swallowed heavily as Ram looked up at him, expression carefully blank.
"Ah P'King, do you mind explaining the concepts again to Ram?" asked Phu. "Sorry he's late, I forgot to mention to you that he had a prior commitment."
King hastily turned to face Phu, grateful for the opportunity to look away. "No worries, Nong. I'll be right there."
He made his way over to Ram at snail-pace, desperately trying to prolong the time it took to reach his ill-fated crush. His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was about to burst right out of his chest.
Finally reaching Ram's shoulder, King took a deep breath before speaking. "So, um, do you have any particular questions or do you want me to start from the top?"
Ram nodded sharply. King waited for Ram to clarify which of the two he was referring to but received no answer.
"You do understand Thai, right?" he asked carefully.
Ram gave another jerky nod. When no further reply came, King ran a hand through his hair. "From the top then, I assume. Turn your textbook to the chapter on indefinite limits, we'll start from there."
He muddled his way through the explanations, relying on Ram's nods and head shakes to gauge his understanding. Assigning Ram a couple of questions, he stepped back and took a few moments to collect himself.
Shit. Having to tutor his crush was pure torture. He had been hyper-aware of himself the entire time - every breath, every tiny motion he made, and even the volume of his voice. The stress of having to be near Ram was going to be the death of him.
"P'King," Phu called. "Ram's having difficulty with this question."
Pulling himself together, King braced a hand on the table and leaned over Ram's shoulder to study the problem. As he did so, he caught a whiff of Ram's cologne - a heady blend of musk, wood and leather. The scent hung seductively in the air.
King inhaled deeply, subtly trying to fill his lungs with it. Too distracted by the smell to concentrate on anything else, he stared at the paper blankly, not processing a single word.
Ram turned his head slightly to stare at his suddenly all-too-quiet senior. The movement caused his nose to lightly brush against King's cheek. The touch burnt like the white heat of a comet trail and yanked the senior back to the present.
King jerked away like he'd been stung.
"I...er...I forgot about a meeting. Gotta go now," he stammered, grabbing his bag and the bouquet from Duen off the bench. "N'Phu, send me a photo of the question. I'll get back to you later," he said before promptly fleeing, leaving the 1st year students staring after him in confusion.
Bohn stroked a smooth petal delicately. "What did you say the flowers meant again?"
"Forgiveness, new beginnings and hope," came King's muffled voice from where he'd buried his face in the mound of pillows littering Bohn's bed.
Bohn hid the smile that had slowly begun to spread across his face in the bouquet. "King, he went through the trouble of making an apology bouquet."
"Yay... lucky you..."
Bohn shot his friend a glare. "What's your problem? You've been like that for half an hour already."
"Don't remind me," King moaned, attempting to smother himself with the pillows. "Or better yet, just kill me now."
"You have five seconds to start talking before I come over there and make you talk," Bohn threatened. "Five. Four. Thre-"
King threw a pillow at him without looking. It bounced off the edge of the couch, nowhere near Bohn. Grabbing it, Bohn chucked it back at King, and unlike his friend, nailed him right in the head.
"Ow! Alright! He was part of the group I had to tutor today and then I went and fucked it all up with my stupid crush, happy?!"
"What did y- "
Bohn's phone pinged. Deciding to drop the subject for the moment, Bohn reached over and picked it up. Reading the message, he whooped and jumped on top of King.
"He asked me out! King, Duen asked me out!"
King lifted his head up with a groan and wheezed, "He did what now?"
"He asked me out!" yelled Bohn into his ear. "Our usual bar, tomorrow night at 9!"
"Ok, ok, I heard you now get off me," King pleaded, gasping for breath.
Bohn promptly rolled off him and moved to text Duen. King put an immediate stop to that by grabbing Bohn's arm.
"Wait, are you sure you want to accept? This is the same guy who rejected you a week ago that we're talking about."
Bohn raised an imperious eyebrow. "Of course I'm sure. I always get what I want."
King sighed and let Bohn get back to texting Duen. He pulled out his own phone. Like hell was he letting Bohn walk into this on his own.
K: Our resident idiot has decided to accept that kid's request for a date tomorrow
P: You serious? The same one he was avoiding at the fundraiser?
K: Yeah. A bouquet of flowers is all it took for that resolve to collapse like a house of cards.
P: What's the plan?
K: I'm gonna go with. No way in hell am I going to leave them alone till I'm sure of his intentions.
P: Text me the address and time, I'll be there
K: No way. You have your hazing trip the next morning. Are you not planning to sleep? You're not coming.
P: You're not my dad. And that's my problem. Besides, Bohn's given you the slip plenty of times. As long as he doesn't know I'm there, we can keep an eye on him.
K: Fine. The usual bar, 9pm. I'll let you know if there's a change of plans.
P: Got it

Back to Campus: Spring 2021
It has been 10 long months since I last stepped foot on the Smith College campus (or out of my home state for that matter). I am now officially back! Hooray! As I said in a recent post, I was prioritized for early arrival due to my job in ResLife as a Community Advisor. As I only just got here and am far from being settled in, this post is mostly just about the process. Hopefully this year I will actually post a room tour of sorts! (Last year, I literally only posted a photo of my emptied out room).
Back in mid-December, I signed up for an arrival slot (2:00 on Friday the 22nd of January). I was so excited about returning to campus that I started packing quite a while ago. To make the packing process easier in the future, I created an extensive packing list. To read my college essentials guide, click here. On Friday, my dad drove me to Smith. Before returning to campus, we stopped by the house of some family friends to grab the rest of my dorm essentials. Since Massachusetts considers my state (Vermont) high-risk, I wasn’t allowed to move directly into my spring housing. At this point in time, Massachusetts and Hawaii are the only states with low-risk status.

My house, Parsons, has been using Discord for our virtual house community. You can read about the other apps I use in (remote) college here. As I was the first one on campus, I decided to keep my residents updated on the check-in and quarantine process. This was not part of my job in ResLife, but it definitely felt relevant to that work. Even though I am a returning student and in ResLife, I didn’t fully know what to expect and figured others would appreciate a student’s perspective. I was already planning on writing this blog post but decided to just compile my updates here. For starters, I didn’t see the need for a total rewrite. I also thought it would be a fun and different post style. Lastly, I think there is value in knowing what people are thinking in the moment rather than just reflectively. Note that my updates are written to my Parsons residents and weren’t edited to reflect the audience of this blog. I did add some additional images to this blog post, but most were also sent via Discord.

Just a quick update. I have moved into my quarantine location and thought I would let you all know a little more about the check-in process from a student's perspective. All official information can be found in an email titled "IMPORTANT ARRIVAL INFORMATION". You basically just enter the CC, present your OneCard (unless you are a new student in which case you will receive yours), follow the arrows, and do what you are told. The whole process is quick and easy. The COVID test is painless (you can feel it though) as the swab doesn't need to go super deep into your nose like with other tests. While I strongly advise showing up at your scheduled time, if you are a little bit early, you may be able to check-in anyway. (I checked-in about 20 minutes early without an issue). The only hiccup I had was that I got the wrong room key (my correct room number but for Park House). As it's hard to hear people with masks on, be sure to check the envelope containing your room key and bracelet before leaving the ResLife table (to avoid going around the CC for a second time like I had to). I think check-in will only get better and even going around twice was still very quick and easy. As for moving things into Parsons, it was exhausting as no one was allowed to help me. When you arrive at Parsons, someone (possibly me) should be there to greet you (and make sure you don't stay over an hour). As for the quarantine location, I am currently quarantined in the Ellery Inn. The other location is the Fairfield Inn & Suites. You can get to either location by way of a free shuttle. (Your ticket is the bracelet you receive at check-in). Students sit far apart with masks, but I personally felt more comfortable having my dad drop me off at the hotel. It is also worth noting that both hotels are within walking distance. The bracelet is also important so that staff in the house know you are allowed to be there. (If you have approved guests (low-risk state), I think they also get bracelets). I haven't learned the whole color-coding system, but my bracelet is red and lists my Parsons and Ellery rooms. My quarantine room is actually really nice. I have a comfortable king-sized bed and my own bathroom. When you arrive you get a bag with a few snacks, water, activities from OSE, and general information (including the wifi password). I will keep you posted on the food situation as dinner is yet to arrive. I will momentarily post the menu that was in my welcome bag. Hopefully, these updates are somewhat helpful or interesting. Let me know if you have specific questions.

Dinner! Will let you know how it is soon, but my roommate from last year has said "The chicken is very tender!". Basically what happens is the people delivering the food knock loudly on the door, announce "dinner" and leave paper bags outside your room. Breakfast for tomorrow was also delivered.

I was initially quite worried about the food situation (during quarantine) as I am a picky eater and didn't get to choose the meal. (It's all based on the food preference form). The first dinner was much better than I feared. The chicken had flavor, was tender, and was fully cooked. The greens were also tasty. The potatoes could have used some ketchup but were pretty good when eaten with the chicken. I don't really like beets, so I just ate a few to try them. They didn't have much flavor but were well cooked. As for the cookies, they had good flavor but were very hard. Overall, I was unnecessarily worried about the food situation but am definitely excited to get out of quarantine to pick my own food among other things.

Tomorrow's breakfast! Looks pretty good other than the fact I hate bananas. I am most excited about the vanilla soy milk. I just don't get why we get plastic bottled water at each meal.

Lunch for day two in quarantine has arrived. Another gripe that I have is that we get a new full set of plastic silverware at each meal. It's the compostable kind, but I don't think it's going to be composted. So far quarantine is boring, but not that bad. There is a TV in the room with cable and Roku. Make sure you pack your quarantine bag carefully as you cannot leave your room until you get an official release email from ResLife. The rooms (at least mine) have a mini-fridge, so if you have food or medications that require refrigeration, not to worry. We got an email today saying that we will be released on Monday at the latest. I initially had the impression we'd get out on Sunday and yesterday it sounded like we may get out today. I am obviously hoping to get out sooner rather than later, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Yesterday's dinner was better than today's, but this one wasn't too bad. The tortillas were dry, so the meal was better and less messy without them. My main critique is that while the beef had good flavor, it was tough. I also think yesterday's greens were a little bit better. Here's what I got for tomorrow's breakfast. I am hoping to be released from quarantine tomorrow, but it could be as late as Monday. Quarantine releases are at noon or 4 pm.

I passed my initial COVID screening! (Still waiting on my official release email from ResLife). Just for a reference point, I took my test a little before 2 pm on Friday and got the results email at around 11 last night. (Basically, you get an email letting you know that the lab results are available and are given a registration code to set up your account).

I finally received the official release email from ResLife!!! I can leave as soon as 1 pm and must be moved out by 4 pm. Like with arrival, there are shuttles every half hour. Starting tonight I will be ordering my food through the Grubhub app and picking it up myself. I also have another COVID test scheduled for tomorrow.

The Middle of the Road (Chapter 16)

September 2024 – Toronto Emily and Keanu flopped down on the bed in their room at the apartment they were renting in Toronto for the week of The Toronto International Film Festival. They had just arrived from LA and were travel weary. He had just had his 60th birthday and would be receiving a Tribute award at the festival, a great honour for any film maker but an especially treasured one for Keanu who had grown up in the city. He remembered when the festival used to take place in his neighbourhood of Yorkville in the late 70s so the whole event was very close to his heart.
The whole family had decamped from LA including their Nanny Maria which would enable them to attend the evening events as well as do some promotion. Keanu had done voice work in a film being premiered there which had a U certificate so they would all attend the afternoon screening. They were taking a bit of a risk with Hannah but Emily or the nanny would be able to take her or Johnny out if either of them got unsettled.
After they had rested up a bit, they all went out to a local Italian restaurant around the corner from the apartment and enjoyed a simple relatively quick meal before getting the babies back home to bed. The next morning found Keanu and Emily enjoying some free time looking around his old haunts – he’d shown her his home in Yorkville, his elementary school, ice hockey stadium, the Leah Poslun Theatre and the location of his first kiss!
“Right there?”? Emily was pointing with an aghast expression on her face at a dingy alley behind a bike rack at the back of an old Walgreens store.
“Yup – I know. I’ve got a bit classier in my old age I hope you agree.”
“And what was her name?”
“Angela”
“Now THAT is a 70s name if ever I heard one. I guess at least your name is just totally unique and not linked to an era like some”
“She was sweet – but not long lasting!” Anyway, I think that is the complete high, and low, lights for you. We better get back and get some lunch before this afternoon’s shenanigans” He was referring to the premiere of his film which was an afternoon affair so kids could attend. Some local children would attend as well as press and the stars and their families. Johnny and Hannah would be there – with the exit strategy of mum or nanny if it was too much. They had watched films at home and had quite good attention spans but Hannah had only been in a movie theatre once and so was a bit if an unknown quantity behaviour wise.
It was also to be their first red carpet as a family. They had kept the children well shielded so far but, accepting that complete privacy wasn’t realistic, they had decided to attend this premiere all together. They all dressed in smart casual clothes rather than the suits and ballgown style of Oscars and that was needed given they would have the kids next to them snacking on ice cream! The press and fans were enthralled with the kids, both dark haired and with big brown eyes strongly favouring Keanu but with the delicacy of Emily’s features. After letting her walk on wobbly legs for a little while, Keanu scooped Hannah up and carried her while Emily walked with Jonathan and Marie brought the buggy and a change bag just in case. Hannah loved waving at everyone and fans called her name which made her laugh. Johnny joined in with waving too, sensing that this was something special but not really at all clear what. It was going to be a while before they understood that their Dad wasn’t just special to them!
The kids enjoyed the film and made it through the whole hour and half without a melt down to everyone’s relief.
That evening Emily and Keanu appeared on a panel about a project they were working on together. There were inevitable questions about how husband and wife could work together which they fended off deftly - working together was after-all how they met and it felt easy compared to parenting and they were glad to keep the topic work focussed. In the next couple of days they each took part in other promo for their work and had a meal out, just the two of them. There they talked about the award show that would be the following night.
“You nervous?” Emily asked as she sipped her coffee.
“Am I ever!” He groaned. “All that intention is intense – I’m used to parts of it – the red carpet, the photos, being filmed in the audience, even being on stage handing out awards or receiving a less significant gong but such focus, and a speech – phew, it’s crazy”
“It’s what you deserve honey, you know that inside don’t you”
He shook his head,
“It’s an honour, such an honour but, no, I don’t know it – it just feels surreal”
“Well just try to enjoy it if you can, hun – OK?, Want to run through the speech back at the apartment?”
“Sure, that would be great to have a writer’s input”
The award day came and they passed as much of it as they could focussing on the kids, taking them to one of the lakeside beaches for playtime and a picnic but eventually time came for the ‘dressing up game’ as Keanu called it. Both of them would spend a few hours being “made beautiful” for the cameras with stylists primping and polishing their hair, clothes and make up to within an inch of their lives. They left the children with Maria and they would tune in later to see Mommy and Daddy on the TV walking the red carpet.
Emily was wearing a stunning sleeveless, full length taffeta gown in red and her birthday necklace to match her ruby engagement ring and Keanu was in the tux he’d worn to the 2020 Oscars. Emily’s palms were sweaty even before they left to go to the theatre. She’d attended public occasions before where there were paparazzi but only one awards show about 4 years ago so she was nervous of the attention, especially as the news of their marriage was still quite fresh.
As they climbed out of the car, Keanu whispered in her ear “Just imagine everyone naked” before they started to make their way up the red carpet, making her giggle and relax just a little.
“I feel like the wives in Apollo 13, if they ask me anything. I’ll just say “I’m proud, happy and thrilled”
“Are you likening me getting an award to going to the moon or a life-threatening mission?!”
“the former for you and maybe the latter for me!”
At first she held Keanu’s arm in a death grip but gradually she relaxed especially as she saw the smiling faces in the crowd and she saw Keanu relax too, signing photos, DVDs and books and posing for photos. Several fans encouraged her to pose alongside him, surprising her. It seemed some people were happy to see him happy with his marriage and kids and thus welcomed her with open arms.
There were a few reporters on the red carpet who stopped them for a few words. Keanu made her laugh, though she tried to hold it in, when he responded to the question of how he was feeling to be receiving the Tribute Award.
“Well I’m proud, happy and thrilled” he said, giving Emily a wink which made the laughter bubble to the surface. They moved on and at last made it into the auditorium and were shown to their seats.
There were several other awards before his but at last it was time for his big moment.
The presentation started with a show reel with clips from his most famous movies as well as some of his lesser known early ones which made him blush. He leaned over and whispered to Emily
“At least they’re not showing the Coke and cornflakes ads!”
After the reel, there were some video clips from some of his directors and co-stars praising – his work, his character and his work ethic. There was Chad Stahelski, Sandy Bullock, Carrie-Ann Moss and Lilly Wachowski. Then it was time for the award itself which Lana Wachowski presented. As he walked up to the stage, the whole auditorium stood, clapping and cheering. He was right, Emily thought, this was really overwhelming! She dabbed a tear away as he took his place at the podium and took a moment to let the applause fade.
“Firstly let me say a huge thank you for this great, great honour - to receive this in the city where I spent my formative years is really very special so thank you.”
More applause erupted then quickly subsided allowing him to continue.
“I owe this award to many other people - first and foremost, I’d like to pay tribute to my mom for believing in me all those years ago when I asked her one day, would it be ok if I was an actor and she simply said ‘whatever you want son’.
And thanks must also go of course to the teachers and directors at the schools where I did plays and at the Leah Posluns Theatre where I really began to learn my craft- thank you for lighting the fire.
Looking back, the reel you showed just now only served to remind me how much I love movies. And a key reason over the years for that love and indeed for much of my success has been the joy of collaboration when making them. Collaboration with many wonderful directors, actors, cinematographers, stunt coordinators, make-up artists, caterers, runners to name but a few is what I thrive on. And they have all made me look good. And I know sometimes I’ve made my fellow actors look good too by how bad I was! Special thanks to Winona and Gary in that regard!
And I can’t forget the writers, for one thing my wife would never forgive me if I didn’t give them a mention.”
Keanu looked over and caught Emily’s eye as she sat in the front row beaning with pride.
“Writers have gifted me some amazing, memorable characters, some of them coming back time and again like Ted, Neo and John Wick. And I think special thanks are due for all the Johns, Johnny’s and Jacks and the quarterback punks that have been a recurring theme for me and such fun to play.
So I love movies and I love the opportunity they give me to tell stories.
But this year, as I hit a big milestone birthday, I am in a new phase in my life and I’m planning on being focussed less on the stories in films and more on my own story. Over the years, my fellow actors and the crews have been like family to me, a band of brothers and sisters if you will. But 5 years ago I met and fell in love with a wonderful woman and she became my family. Then 2 years ago we became parents - and now there are 4 of us. And this year I also became a husband - in all these things as you can probably tell I was a late starter!
So whilst I’m not retiring, going forward I can’t and I don’t want to be the man who is all work and no play. I want to be with my beautiful wife and my kids as they grow and play my part in guiding them in their lives, in their story.
And hopefully, I’ll bring the riches of that experience of being a parent and a husband to my future roles.
Thank you”
There was rapturous applause at this end to his speech and Emily found herself crying once again at his very public commitment to a more balanced life for them all going forward.
Keanu took his leave, heading back stage where there would be a few interviews to do before he could re-join Emily and head onto the after-party. There was a brief break in proceedings and Emily made her way back stage to meet up with him.
Keanu was just taking his leave from one of the news teams when he glimpsed Emily weaving her way between the throngs of stage hands, actors and publicists.
He headed in her direction and indicated a small alcove to the side to aim for. She reached it first and waited for him to join her, his progress being slowed by people stopping to congratulate him on his award and speech. When he finally got there, she threw he arms around his neck.
“That was, just, just”
“Wow have I actually rendered you speechless?” he laughed.
“You didn’t share THAT part of the speech!”
“You mean the bit about marrying a wonderful woman and sharing my story with her?”
“yes that part, you sneaky devil, you made me cry”
“Happy tears I hope?”
“Yes!” she smiled planting a kiss on his smiling lips.

Waking Witchblr: Teacher’s Tuesday
Hi, @wakingwitchblr & all!
Let me start off with this: I am not a teacher/mentor in terms of actual practice (though I can point people in the right direction: experienced practitioners and reliable sources). This post is probably a little different than the intended purpose of Teacher’s Tuesday, but I hope it’s alright.
This one is all about research for one’s Craft and Path.
For transparency’s sake:
I have only two years of actual Craft practice at current. I’d classify myself as a toddler or kid Witch in terms of experience. (Can I be Kiki?! :D )
I am a newly devoted Celtic Pagan/Polytheist.
I searched for my spiritual path for somewhere between 15 and 20 years, starting as a kid who realized Christianity wasn’t for me.
For the vast majority of that time, I was some form agnostic or atheist, with no spiritual anything in my life. (Note: you can be these and a Witch, I just wasn’t.)
I am an educator: world history for grade 10 and writing for college students.
I am an academic: I have 11 years of university, most of which required consistent research. Needless to say, I’ve developed this skill immensely.
I am a white person whose ancestral line, as far as I am aware, is based in Western Europe and the British Isles.
OK! So, now you know where I’m coming from. Take everything I say with all of the above in mind.

Know Thyself
Many thanks to the Greeks for this, as it certainly encapsulates a key part of the research process. These questions are good for the beginning of a new research project, but also necessary as you progress to reflect upon what you’ve learned so far and where you yet need to go.
Here are some questions to consider when you are starting:
What do I already actually know about the subject? Not “what did my friend tell me” or “what did I see on Pinterest”, but what have you actually looked into yourself and studied?
In terms of spirituality, morality, and ethics: what do I value? For example, many of us (rightly) value respecting closed belief systems and avoiding the appropriation of beliefs and practices. Another example: Am I open to New Age and more modern religions/practices such as Aura readings and Wicca? Or am I seeking something older, something documented in history?
What resources do I currently have access to for learning? Google has a host of possibilities, and you may even be able to find scholarly works on Google Scholar. Those of you in university or public schools also likely have access to research databases via your library. Your public libraries may even have books or ebooks via apps that you would read or listen to; don’t forget about Interlibrary Loans! & lastly, you may have a local metaphysical shop, Druid’s circle, Pagan group gathering, et cetera. Take inventory of your resources.

The Funnel Approach
There are a couple of ways that I’ve seen people recommend breaking into Witchcraft and Paganism. The first is picking something that piques your interest (e.g. candle magick) and researching that topic in depth. The second, I don’t see all too often. I call it the Funnel Approach to research, and it’s something that I’ve learned to do as a scholar and teacher.
It’s exactly how it sounds: start very broad, then narrow down to your focus. It’s the approach I’ve been using for my spiritual journey over the last few years and it has served me well. A note: to do this properly does take time and energy. It’s an investment in your journey and patience is necessary.
It is also important to note that you can do this multiple times as your interests and needs shift -- nothing is set in stone. Ever. In fact, if you find that you’re stagnant and not learning or growing, I recommend reflecting on yourself. Everyone can learn something. Everyone.
Here’s how it worked for me so far:
I answered the Know Thyself questions above in a journal to better understand what I learned in context with who I am and who I wanted to be.
The broad start: using those questions, I cast a wide net for resources about various practices, focusing on introductory-level books. Examples of what I read include Scott Cunningham’s Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner and David Beckett’s The Path to Paganism. I value respect for closed cultures, so I found sources from those cultures and determined what practices I was uncomfortable with in terms of appropriation. Reputable works regarding other spiritual paths weren’t just books, but blogs, myths, scholarly papers, podcasts, et cetera from well-known, experienced practitioners who are considered elders in their practice. Bonus if they, at any time, examined who they were in context with their practice in a critical way. *see my ‘for transparency’s sake’ note above for an example.
After reading, I decided that I wanted to pursue Celtic Paganism in some form and that my Craft would likely resemble more folk magic with a smattering of newer concepts that I felt comfortable with. This is when I started writing out what types of Witchcraft were appealing: I made my list for further research in each.
At this point, for each topic I wanted to learn, I sought out experienced practitioners (some even here on Tumblr!) to follow and learn from. This is also where I actually started to do things. Trial and error. Read more. Try again. Record how it goes. Et cetera. Some ideas were abandoned as not suiting my philosophy or goals, others were discovered and explored during the process.
Now, I have narrowed down who I am and what I want my Craft to look like. Like all good research and practice, I will repeat the steps as necessary while I grow. As you learn more, you’ll probably find yourself struggling with the Socratic Paradox:
I know that I know nothing.

Recording Your Research
As you do your research, you need to record your notes. Ok, well, not need, but I strongly recommend it unless you have an extraordinarily good memory. You can do this however you’d like, but here is what I do:
I have digital bookmarks for sources and/or saved PDFs if it’s from a database. Major notes/thoughts that were really impactful are handwritten in my Book of Mirrors (a super messy notebook where I am just throwing down necessary information for my journey) with information about where to locate the source I have saved. Books have little colorful flags in them to mark a page that I found particularly important.
I am also starting to do an annotated bibliography, in a sense. For each source, I try to find out more about the author/creator. How many years have they practiced? What is their standing in the community they are a part of? What is their cultural lineage? Where do their ideas, practices, or philosophies originate from?
As I complete research on a topic, I’ve started drafting final pages for my Book of Wisdom, which is meant to be a reference book for my Craft. It not only includes information, but each topic will contain notes about where it came from and its context.
Is it a lot? Yes. But it is thorough.

Wrapping Things Up
This is by no means an entirely exhaustive ‘how-to’, of course. If I were to really write out every single step I’ve been taking, it would be a literal book! However, my hope is that it helps Baby Witches and Pagans take their first step(s). I see a lot of “where do I start?” posts.
